With Salah's contract cancelling by mutual consent, I assume he will walk away on a free.
I also remember that the club were advised not to offer him a large 2 year contract.
Who makes these decisions and how are they still in a job?

25 Mar 2026 19:04:17
Yeah it's a negotiation.
I'm sure we did try and get him on a 1yr contract or even a 1yr rolling contract.
However, Salah's form in the first half of last season created a very strong negotiating position.
He forced our hand. He deserved it.

25 Mar 2026 19:14:34
In all fairness, how do you not secure a player who just had a record breaking title winning season? Can you imagine the backlash if we let Salah walk after last year? 46 g/a.
All the cards were stacked in his favour, every last one. It was less of a negotiation and more like a list of demands, all we could do was say yes or no, and no, really wasn't an option.

It's a business. MO's contract extension reflected his value to the club at the time. Things change and his value to the club has diminished. Apart from anything else, he has been nothing short of world class for the decade he has been at the club. He owes nothing to the club.
Agree3
Disagree12
{Ed025's Note - did he not get paid (very handsomely) for playing for those 9 years WDW?, i believed that he was signing a new deal last year on a mind boggling £400k a week plus bonuses to protect his value if he was to be sold before its termination mate?..or am i wrong?
25 Mar 2026 20:13:04
I had thought similar to ed25 that a 2 year contract would've been to protect his value to a certain degree. I'm v surprised we haven't tried to get a fee for him, he has had a v poor season but he has still 10goals and 9 assists. Compare that to a lot of wide players and I'd day it's fairly favourable. Stats like that don't tell all the story as there's been games where he's been non existent, but then we could say that about 80% of our team.
Still I would've thought we couldve got decent fee, £15-20m for him. I wouldn't price him out of a dream move if he wanted it but I'm sure whoever he goes to will be paying him handsomely so couldve afforded a transfer fee
Agree3
Disagree0
25 Mar 2026 21:06:09
If we accepted anything less than £20m fee it would mean we’re losing money compared to just letting him walk.
His wages still have to be paid, by us, if we accept a transfer fee. We have to pay to break his contract which means paying it off. His wages are £20m per season.
Then the player and his agent have to accept the new club and their wages in preference to waiting one more season at Anfield and getting a free transfer.
So essentially you’re looking for a club, which offers significantly more than £20m transfer fee (as the player and their agent take their cut), will pay him a wage which he will accept (so probably close to £20m per year), he will probably want multiple years and it is a club which the player wants to play for.
Otherwise he stays and sits out his contract for a season.
If, if, he was still performing like he performed when he signed the contract then you might just find that Goldilocks of a deal. But the way he’s playing now? No club is going to pay that transfer fee and give him that deal in preference to waiting an extra season.
This solution of negotiating an early end to his contract seems the least painful to me.

{Ed025's Note - you make a good case Ron..
25 Mar 2026 21:13:16
I'm very irritated about this situation. I've been saying it for months, but shipping any players out after the crap Slot has been forcing on all of us makes no sense to me.
What makes even less sense is letting him go on a free.
How is it just one nonsensical, baffling decision after another by our club these days? Is there nothing that isn't a total mess and needing sorted? Why does everything just seem to be put off until this summer? Seems like a lot of serious stupidity going on all season long, and I'm getting more and more frustrated by it.
Agree2
Disagree1
{Ed025's Note - it seems contracts are not worth the paper they are written on Snuggles, players and their agents hold all the aces it seems mate..
25 Mar 2026 21:15:17
I've got that bit about paying off the wages wrong.
The new club takes over the contract if they get the player.
Still, a club is going to have to pay a transfer fee and pay his wages, probably increase them, sign him up for multiple years, and be a club he wants to go to.
On current form, I don't think any club was coming in for him. Most would wait one more season.
Agree2
Disagree0
25 Mar 2026 22:08:56
The thing people get wrong about contracts is they're not supposed to reflect the previous season. They're supposed to be a prediction of the following season.
When Salah was given a new contract, it wasn't a reward for last season, it was supposed to be an incentive for this one.
Agree0
Disagree1
{Ed025's Note - and hows that working out so far mate?..
25 Mar 2026 23:54:43
I'm pretty sure his drop off in form is largely due to the slow, laborious build up play, no mid 30s winger is going to beat 2 or 3 set defenders.
Club legend and I wish him well, but these tactics are totally hamstringing him.
Agree4

26 Mar 2026 04:19:39
If a club decides to sell a player, then I believe they have to pay the agreed loyalty bonus as well. This does not get paid if a player hands in a transfer request. So, along with the £20m in wages, this could have also been saved.
Loyalty bonuses can be in the millions.
Agree1
Disagree3
{Ed001's Note - if a player hands in a written transfer request they lose their cut of any transfer fee. They are otherwise entitled to 5%.}
26 Mar 2026 12:51:08
I remember there being a number of dissenting voices, myself included, saying Salah should have been let go last season. There may have been a majority but there was hardly a silent minority, so quit with the "hindsight" comments.

I asked my source about where Mo may go. Roma and Galatasaray are real options.
Not to say it will be one of the two clubs but I remember being told a few months ago Saudi wasn’t really an option.
There’s a couple of MLS teams that have put a package together, but I’ve not been told who.
If I get any updates I’ll be sure to pass on. May have something this weekend as I’m going to an event with my source.

On a like for like, Diomande is more of a Salah replacement, but as someone else has said, it depends on how the new manager wants to set us up.

I keep getting asked the same thing over and over and over about Slot.
Bookmark this, stick it on your fridge this is my information and that is final.
Slot was told months ago his position at Liverpool was virtually done.
His family arrangements haven't helped, discussions over a termination went amicable and Slot was happy to work on until the summer.
Edwards spoke to Fabregas in Como, nothing came of it.
Luis Enrqique's agent spoke with Liverpool, very difficult as he's invested into the project at PSG. Would love to manage LFC in the future
Talks with Gerrard went positive regarding a interim role, club decided to stick with Slot. Gerrard is there if FSG change their minds.
Hoeness is very well regarded and could be considered. I would think as a second option to Alonso. Would jump at the chance to manage LFC
Xabi Alonso though is and always has been the main candidate, wants the job and will most likely get it this summer.
If Slot wins a Champions league does it change things? This is a two way street and Slot seems happy to go back home. I personally don't see that changing things but you never know.
The conclusion - Slot leaves this summer Xabi Alonso joins LFC.
Ta.

Willo, that would be my dream ticket. I think Ed001 has said on occasions in the past that Stevie is a very good coach (as shown by his stint here with the youth teams) but not a good manager. We obviously know all about Stevie's passion, especially for this club.
Not sure if it will happen, Stevie would have to swallow his pride3 a bit having managed teams before, but I think the two of them could boss the team as they used to boss midfield.
Add Milner to that, and that would be a return to the bootroom, imho.

I'm a firm believer that a manager (don't agree with Head Coaches) should select their own backroom team, and I'm certain that's what will happen.
You need someone who is going to implement your system and keep the players focussed on the manager's plans.
Someone with their own ideas will only complicate matters. An assistant needs to be humble. Not sure it's Gerrard's gig, if I'm honest.

It doesn't sit well with me that some fans want him gone no matter if he hits Champions League qualification for next yr or not.
I have been a season ticket holder since the late 70's and the football is gash, but so was Rafa's yrs in charge when we ended up winning the Champions League.
I believe we are all entitled to an opinion. And I didn't think we would win the league last yr after Klopp's final yr fell apart, with 5 league games to go. Even with Klopp, the squad of players who won the league the following yr look gassed at this stage of the season.
Some are saying we are being out run this season because of Slot, maybe, but we finished 16th in the running stats last season when nobody brought up being out run, or not fit.
My opinion is the same as it was for the last 3 seasons when we play 3 games a week, this squad struggles and we need a manager in charge, not a head coach, but I still wouldn't sack him if he wins old big ears.

As I previously reported after the Leeds game, Salah has now agreed to terminate his contract with the club. This is something that's been in negotiations for months, beginning around the time of Leeds away.

Surely you've mixed up the names here, mate?
Galatasaray do have a very good winger (Baris Alper Yilmaz) who I think would be a good signing. He can play RW, LW and CF. Plus he's only 25 and is probably the quickest player I've seen play against us since prime Theo Walcott. Yilmaz also has 10 goals and 14 assists this season, which is not to be sniffed at.
Sallai is an RB though. 28 years old. Can't really beat a man. Has occasionally played as a RWB. Only has 1 goal and 6 assists this season.
If Yilmaz is the alternative to Olise, I'm not fussed at all as I think both would do very well for us. In fact, I think Yilmaz is more suited to the Premier League as he's much more robust, and Olise struggled with multiple serious hamstring injuries when he played in the Premier League, which might be an indicator that the pace of English football is too much for him.
The only injury that has ever kept Yilmaz out for more than 1 game was a broken foot, and he was still back after just 5 games. Olise is quite clearly the more technically gifted player though. Yilmaz is just a battering ram.
The only way Sallai even remotely makes sense as a Salah replacement is if the club see Frimpong as more of a RW than a RB, and Sallai came in to play at RB and free Frimpong up to play further forward even if Bradley is injured. That seems like a stretch though.

Agree with a lot of what you say there, MK, but I think you're being a bit harsh on Yilmaz.
I think he's as skilful as Olise, not as quick, but definitely stronger on the ball, higher work rate, and very clever, skilful player.
He'd be a great signing.

Just to clarify re Sallai.
My understanding is that in the event of Olise not being possible, Sallai would be brought in as backup to Jeremie Frimpong, who can play on the wing.
Bayern want Gakpo and there's a possibility of some sort of swap deal + cash being organised there. Everything hinges on UCL qualification.

Ron, am I misreading or are you saying you think Yilmaz is not as quick as Olise? Because Olise is not anywhere near as fast as Yilmaz. Olise is more like a Payet or Cherki type player. He can beat a man if they overcommit because the ball sticks to his feet like it's glued there, but he's not what I would describe as fast.
Yilmaz on the other hand, I genuinely cannot think of a quicker player we've faced since Walcott circa 2007-2010. I was absolutely stunned when Yilmaz strode past Szoboszlai and made him look like Mac Allister. Dom is no slouch and Yilmaz made him look like he was running in lead boots.
I didn't mean my original comment to sound harsh on Yilmaz though. Like you say, he's stronger on the ball and works a lot harder. He can also comfortably play both sides. I'd really like to see him in a Liverpool shirt next season. He's exciting, and when you watch Galatasaray pressing, they're relentless. He's a huge part of that. With Olise you're not going to get any pace in behind, and he is not going to press for the team. I honestly just don't see what he'll add to the team that a 33 year old Salah doesn't offer. If we want a relatively slow winger (who won't make a tackle) to cut back onto their left foot and curl the ball towards goal or the back post, we might as well be keeping Salah.
To be abundantly clear, Diomande is the winger I want. I posted on the Discussions page already but in order to get the best out of Isak and Ekitike I think we need blistering pace on both sides. Diomande should be the main priority for the RW as he is going to be elite, but after that I'd go for someone for the LW with a similar profile to Sadio Mane when we signed him all them years ago. 21-25 years old, aggressive, lightning quick, direct, and with the potential to score 10+ goals a season. Gordon, Yilmaz, Minteh, Ouattara etc. We have signed Wirtz and not given him any runners to pick out. We've signed Isak and not given him any out and out wingers to provide him with the service he thrived on at Newcastle. All 4 of those players I just listed also press out of possession like it's their primary job in the team. The new signings should be all about maximising the potential of Wirtz and Isak/Ekitike. Otherwise we've just blown £300m.
For me, Olise is just going to come short for the ball, drift infield getting in the way of Wirtz, and carry on doing exactly what an aging Salah's been doing this season. It's an outrageously expensive deal and if the links are true, I have to seriously question who has looked at our squad an decided that we need another winger who lacks genuine pace to beat a decent full back, and wants to come inside at every opportunity. Rio makes such a difference when he comes on because he is very fast and wants to beat his man on the outside or drive into the box. He's not even that great right now, he's just stylistically exactly what we're lacking and therefore he gives the team balance.

Victor, who is being tasked with arranging the targets and negotiations? If we are to believe Hughes is one foot out the door, as is Slot, so who is in control or even advising the players of interest if the two people previously at the heart of buying and using these players are going, unless of course one or neither are leaving?

Hughes is still continuing sporting director work for the club as things stand. Edwards is doing his part too, albeit heavily disappointed with the club currently.

So full research mode lol.
Considering Xabi comes in, and Considering he sets up like Leverkusen did.
Might actually make sense Sallai (that is).
Xabi played with wingbacks and two AM...
2 + 2 and getting 9 lol.
Olise as AM as opposed to wing.

Bit surprised we are terminating his contract, thought we would look for a fee for him considering there is still 1 year left on his contract.
Or keep him, and possibly a new manager could get something out of him.

Seems a bit odd we aren't getting a fee, we are in desperate need of replacements. And with no CL football we are going to be lacking more funds.

{Ed025's Note - a fee would be good of course Dean, but just getting him off the wage bill will be a shot in the arm for the club mate..

Not when we're doing stupid stuff like handing out £250k-a-week contracts to Gakpo, Ed25. The club have become incredibly profligate over the last 12 months.

{Ed025's Note - i suppose its the going rate these days BR even for average players like Gakpo mate, the money these player get now is ridiculous but i suppose teams can afford to pay it..

Salah is on £20m per year plus bonuses, so it saves our wage bill significantly. I would assume Salah has no intention of going to Saudi just yet, and no European club will pay a fee and take on such high wages, so the best middle ground is release him on a free to another European club and save wages rather than Salah seeing out his contract and it being a lose-lose for club and player.
Salah's fee has been well and truly paid back 10-fold, so I'm happy he gets his move and leaves a club legend!

Salah has been below 50% successful dribbles since the 2020 season.
With the loss of pace, passing going awry and potential the magic goal dust has evaporated, I don't see Mo ending up in any of the major European leagues.

Oooohhhhhhh.... Let's not get started on how much more walking and less running, with a decrease in the amount of ground coverage he has been doing since he started walking as well...
The man is a legend, he will leave a legend.
Age is catching up with him... which makes him human, because at times he was super human for us.
Happy he gets to go on his terms, fully deserved.
Let's just enjoy him for the last few games.
We are gonna miss him.

Really mixed feelings on this, but what a legend.

The bloke is a legend - won everything at the club, and if football wasn't crooked, would have been awarded the Balon D'Or on more than one occasion. Let the man leave with his dignity and not be sold off at a knock down price to the highest bidder.

I was replying to another comment on another thread about how dangerous Mo has been.
And it's algoods, Frode, I've been making the point since 2020 that Mo isn't our most important player for a variety of reasons.
Fully recognize he is a club legend and will leave as one. Hopefully in these last few months he can leave with a bit of gloss to the end of his time at the club.

Let's just hope Salah goes out on a bang with some goals before the end of the season. If he can drive us to top 4 or even a cup, that would be amazing, and will allow him to be remembered as the legend he is at the club. Maybe, the pressure being relieved from him may improve his recent performances. But his numbers are legendary.

In reality, we owe Salah a big thank you for agreeing to terminate his contract because he could have sat at LFC all next season on his high wages and then walked away on a free.
We may not have got a fee for him, but in the long run it will work out well for all parties.
Thank you, Mo, you are a legend. YNWA.
