Hi Eds.

We are being linked to Quentin Timber this morning. Any substance or just lazy journalists linking Feyenoord players because of Slot?

ShipleyKopite

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any approach.}

1.) 23 Jul 2024 14:19:08
I think this is unbe-leaf-able myself, journalists need to spruce themselves up a bit. These kind of rumours leaf me in tears.
Sorry lads, I'll get me coat.

2.) 23 Jul 2024 14:36:29
Cracking fifa player…no idea if his real life equivalent is any good.

3.) 23 Jul 2024 15:13:14
I wood be up for this signing.

4.) 23 Jul 2024 15:44:11
Would definitely give us something to build on ;)

5.) 23 Jul 2024 16:13:17
Hope he’s not the Phil Neville style brother.

6.) 23 Jul 2024 17:02:25
Not sure if he's cut out for the the premier league anyway, he falls over too much.

7.) 23 Jul 2024 17:19:20
I think they're bark-ing up the wrong tree.

They shouldn't lumber us in with just anyone that's Dutch.

8.) 23 Jul 2024 20:55:14
It can't be Curtis Jones, he's not married yet, although expecting a child soon. I'm guessing it's Joe Gomez.

9.) 23 Jul 2024 20:57:24
The loonies are out in full force and it's not even Halloween yet.

10.) 24 Jul 2024 08:06:49
This would be a tree-mendous signing. Oakfully we can cedar lad sign soon.

Question for the Eds (probably Ed002).

Do you know anything about the rumours that Juve are being ruled out of a move for Koopmeiners after refusing to meet either Koopmeiners or Atalantas demands?

ShipleyKopite

{Ed002's Note - Teun Koopmeiners (CM/DM) Atalanta are reluctant to sell but his agent wants the player to be playing regularly in the Champions League with Newcastle, Juventus and Napoli having declared interest. Interest of Milan shifted to Tijjani Reijnders so they can be discounted. Liverpool offer a good option for the player but will be reluctant to meet the asking price - but they are very keen, but to date have not made any offer. Marseille have walked away due to the quoted cost although a change of ownership could see a huge shift for them. Approaches were been made to Arsenal, Manchester United, Spurs and Chelsea although none have spoken with Atalanta and all have other targets for now but cannot be discounted. In particular he is a potential Casemiro replacement for Manchester United. Brighton and Aston Villa interest has gone. Juventus has a creative solution and will push for a summer move knowing that the player wants Juventus move. Atalanta are seeking €60M if pressed to sell and feeling is Juventus may win out with if they are able to include a players in the deal to reduce the price. Else Liverpool are in a good place.}

1.) 16 Jul 2024 09:53:26
Juventus all the way. We are certainly not paying €60 mill anyways.

2.) 16 Jul 2024 13:02:00
Why not Jag? top player. Or is €60M out of our price range now.

{Ed002's Note - He is simply trolling the site. Ignore him.}

3.) 16 Jul 2024 15:06:29
Interesting. 60M EUR does seem like a lot of money for Juve right now, for a player of Koopmeiner's ilk. Great player, but the demand seems greater for LFC (greater the need - greater the willingness to pay) than it does for Juventus. I'm interested to see how this develops.

Hi Eds. Are there any updates on the contract renewals for Virg, Trent or Mo?

There are reports of Saudi clubs circling for Virg after contract talks have stalled but surely talks with him and Trent are parked until they report back for pre season or at least until their involvement in the Euros is over?

ShipleyKopite

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware on anything with the contracts but discussions for players between clubs and agents goes on year round, regardless of where they are.

Virgil van Dijk (CB) I am told that van Dijk's agents have said that had approaches from both Real Madrid and Barcelona. Real Madrid see VvD as a low cost solution in terms of transfer fee but need to make space in the wage structure. Barcelona offer an option but will need to agree sales first. At this point in time it will be very general enquiries only and I doubt either club will move for him. There is however interest from Michael Emanalo on behalf of Al-Nassr. Liverpool need to make a decision about a new contract as a matter of urgency but I would expect him to stay.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB/RWB/RM) Seen by Real Madrid as an option to Reece James. May offer an exchange for Rodrygo Goes or could try and persuade the player's agent to have their client run down his contract over the next year. Liverpool will not want that and will look to a renewal this summer, else he could be moved on.

Mo Salah (RW) His agent is hawking him around for one last big payday - Saudi Pro League with the support of Michael Emenalo would certainly seem the most likely destination with Al-Ittihad. Liverpool will look to try and do something to have him extend but his agent will look for a significant increase in salary and Salah has told Liverpool he wants to play in the Olympics and has told Egypt that he will be available for the Olympic Games in Paris, but as a non-FIFA tournament the club can stop him. His agent will also be encouraged to have Salah run down his contract over the next year at Liverpool in exchange for a huge signing on fee in the summer of 2025. Certainly now it is decision time.}

1.) 27 Jun 2024 11:08:26
Thanks Ed.

I personally hope they all sign extensions but if needs be I wouldn't be too upset to cash in on all 3 as long as we signed quality replacements.

My worry is that they might run down their contracts. I know it is not a new thing but it feels like it is becoming a bit of a problem. This looks to be Real Madrids main tactic at the moment. Nobody can honestly believe that they didn't have an agreement in place with Mbappe long before he ran his contract down and now (if reports are to be believed) they are looking to do the same with Trent and Yoro. I personally would like to see tribunal like we have for youth players in these situations or even better: annual player auctions for those whose contracts have expired where 80% goes to the previous club and 20% goes to grass roots in that country.

{Ed002's Note - I am afraid that is not possible to do.}

2.) 27 Jun 2024 13:00:06
Can’t risk those type of quality players leaving on a free
It should be seen as poor management by the club if it were to happen and surely a date needs to be set where they sign a new contract or are put up for sale.

3.) 27 Jun 2024 14:03:33
I agree. The problem is that you can't sell a player against their will. We could accept massive offer from Saudi but If Bellingham is convincing Trent to go to Real on a free next summer our hands are tied and we can do nothing to prevent one of our biggest assets walking out of the door for nothing.

4.) 27 Jun 2024 15:52:25
Probably no such thing in football but surely with Trent being a local lad you wouldn’t do that to your club? I understand if he wants to move away but I question if I was in his situation i would want my home town club to get as much money for me as possible. Surely clubs are getting peed off with RM if they are telling players to run down there contacts to move for free - I would understand if VVD or MS did it but it would be a little bitter if Trent did it with him being a scouser!

{Ed002's Note - It is not hust Real Madrid doing this.}

5.) 27 Jun 2024 16:07:03
Sorry Ed, I was just stating RM as that’s where Trent is being linked too and the reports I have seen with the likes of Mbappe and Yoro - I’m sure a lot of teams do this and know that LFC aren’t whiter than white - think I was just saying I would be disappointed if a local lad did this ??.

{Ed002's Note - They would accept some sort of deal this season if that is what Liverpool want. I suspect Liverpool want a new deal should know what to do.}

6.) 28 Jun 2024 09:23:34
Pretty sure Real initially agreed a free transfer for Mbappe years ago before he signed an extension (only for him to agree a massive increase in wages and signing on fee with PSG), then last summer bid something like £100-150m for him when he had a year left.

Why pay a rival club a huge fee when you can pay the player 50-80% of the fee as a signing on bonus once their contract runs out. Pretty sure most clubs engage in such behaviour.

25 Jun 2024 15:56:11
Murillo's name is doing the rounds again with Forest apparently needing to raise £20-£25M by Sunday to avoid another PSR punishment.

ShipleyKopite

1.) 25 Jun 2024 16:39:55
Decent young player to be fair. Bit rash defensively but very good on the ball. At 21 years old you'd expect there is scope for a good coach like Slot to improve him a lot. Be interesting to see what comes of this rumoured link. They wanted big money for him before this PSR concern.

2.) 25 Jun 2024 17:55:21
Not convinced. Not a terrific defender, doesn’t win many challenges, can’t header the ball to save his life. Plus at 6ft he’s a bit short for a centre back in this country, not exactly what you’d call a dominant defender and that’s being generous. Might be good on the ball but if he can’t defend or win headers then he’s just a wasted transfer.

3.) 25 Jun 2024 18:04:39
Viktor has spoken.

4.) 25 Jun 2024 18:22:08
Wow. What a surprise, another player that Victor claims is rubbish.

5.) 25 Jun 2024 18:56:06
I think he is a very very good player despite being a bit short. If he really does cost that much it would be excellent value for money methinks.

6.) 25 Jun 2024 19:22:45
Viktor never tells you what players he likes, he's too scared to do that.

7.) 25 Jun 2024 19:36:37
Martinez at United is 5ft9.
Thiago Silva at Chelsea is 6ft0.
Ake at Man City is 5ft11.
Timber at Arsenal is 5ft10.
Guehi at Palace is 6ft0.
Mee at Brentford is 5ft11.
Senesi at Bournemouth is 6ft0.
Holgate at Everton is 6ft0.

A lot of CB’s in the Prem are 6ft or shorter. It means nothing.

8.) 25 Jun 2024 19:43:11
I think Viktor believes all footballers are a bit rubbish.

9.) 25 Jun 2024 20:14:57
Except De Bruyne. nd haaland. nd Foden nd.

10.) 25 Jun 2024 22:37:14
You ok @June?

@VV - hypothetical situation. Liverpool are going to buy a back-up keeper, a left sided defender, a defensive midfielder and a right sided attacker (preferably left footed) . Rather than list everybody you think is unsuitable, here’s the challenge, name the the four players you would sign.

11.) 25 Jun 2024 23:20:07
A lot of the defenders you name MK are rubbish ?.

12.) 26 Jun 2024 02:49:38
Cannavaro is often cited as one of the best defenders of all time was 5 9. Height and speed aren't the most important attributes for defenders, timing and reading the game are.

13.) 26 Jun 2024 06:57:05
Nevada, Puyol wasn’t tall either. Nor was Mascherano. Both played CB for Barcelona at the peak of their powers.

6GoldStars, that’s not really true is it pal. Holgate is pretty average hence why Everton loaned him out. Mee is decent but Brentford is his level. The rest are all good solid defenders. Martinez probably the best at United when fit. Silva been one of the best this generation. Senesi too good for Bournemouth. Timber looked very good when fit. Ake just won the league and knocked the taller Stones and Gvardiol out of CB. Guehi is a very good CB once he gets back to his best following that knee surgery. Aside from all that though, the point isn’t that shorter CB’s are better. The point is that 6ft isn’t really short for a CB. There are hundreds of examples if you expand the parameters out to Europeansnd lower league football as well. Martinez is probably short for a CB at 5ft9. I personally think 6ft or above is tall irrespective of the position you play in football.

14.) 26 Jun 2024 08:09:20
They flight the ball lower in the continent for the smaller CBs ?.

15.) 26 Jun 2024 08:14:55
Like my missus said - it’s not about the size, it’s about the quality.

16.) 26 Jun 2024 08:19:40
Sorry Adam, after watching 2 hours of paint drying last night my comment amused me more than it should have!
There will always be some exceptions, but a cb in my eyes should be taller than 6ft. They should be winning every header and every physical duel. There’s more to defending than physical dominance, but without it you really are struggling. We can agree to disagree, that’s cool. ?.

17.) 26 Jun 2024 09:24:49
It’s cool 6GS, you’re entitled to your opinion mate and who can blame you looking for entertainment, there certainly wasn’t’t any on ITV last night. I personally think smaller CB’s tend to be more effective at some aspects as they can generally turn and accelerate quicker. Helps with reacting to lose balls or recovery tackles. However the taller CB’s can generally dominate aerially and also have higher top speeds once they get into their stride which can help them thrive in a 1v1 battle. I don’t think it’s a defining factor if you’re a good player who knows how to make the most of the gifts you were given. The only defender to win the Balon D’or in my lifetime was the 5ft9 Cannavaro, but the only other one who came close was the 6ft4 Van Dijk. So height is a side note for me when discussing a players ability. I don’t care either way as long as you’re good at what you can do.

18.) 26 Jun 2024 12:17:13
MKS, Murillo ain't ready to make the jump just yet, IMO.

19.) 26 Jun 2024 13:44:09
I like that Murillo, especially at that price and age. I think it could be a shrewd signing that.

20.) 26 Jun 2024 19:07:18
I agree Gunn. He’s quick, he’s strong, he’s a ball carrier that breaks lines, he has a switch of play in the locker, and he puts his body on the line.

I’m not saying we absolutely should sign him, but I’d rather him than say Pacho, Hancko, Calafiori or Inacio who are totally unknown quantities of we’re honest with ourselves. As much as it probably feels less fancy signing a player from Nottingham Forest, we signed Gini, Robbo, Virgil, Mane, Jota, Mac Allister etc from lesser Premier league sides and they all did pretty well!

21.) 27 Jun 2024 11:45:15
I'd agree MK.

He reminds me of Lucio (powerful Brazilian cb, who likes to carry the ball out) .

Inacio, I just don't see the hype whatsoever, personally. Hancko, barely seen a minute of him other than this euros. Calafiori, I really rate, loved watching Bologna this season but its the age old Italians don't travel well worry. Pacho, again seen very little and the bundesliga defensively is a horror show so that would worry me.

Murllio, like you said, has a lot of very good attributes and done it in the Prem, while only being 21.

24 Jun 2024 15:14:49
Deco at Barcelona is apparently obsessed with Diaz and is looking to offload Raphina to Saudi to fund the transfer.

ShipleyKopite

1.) 24 Jun 2024 16:32:34
Shame I do love Diaz but would swap him for Williams from bilbao. Kid is electric.

2.) 24 Jun 2024 19:23:33
I would miss lucho but we really really really really really need to focus on a right winger as either a backup to moe or Moe's eventual replacement. Dear Lord, please do not bring any more left-wingers in.

3.) 24 Jun 2024 19:56:29
Good player but he's definitely upgradeable if they get 70 or 80 million for him I would sell. Doesn't do enough for me in final 3rd. Electric taking players on but passing and finishing only average.

4.) 24 Jun 2024 21:20:12
I’m with Eddie, good player but his end product isn’t good enough and for me not in the same league as Manè. If there’s an upgrade out there, I’d be up for it.

5.) 25 Jun 2024 00:03:09
Thank Christ Barcelona are cashing in Raphinha to Saudi rather than offer him in exchange. Cold hard cash, say no to Barcelona trash.

6.) 25 Jun 2024 08:55:03
Can’t see Barcelona being able to afford more than £50m for Diaz unless their fire sale goes off.

7.) 25 Jun 2024 11:46:31
I believe Ed2 has mentioned previously that the issue for Barcelona isn't affording transfer fees, it's the wages they are needing to reduce, so if they want Diaz and LFC have a figure in mind, I'm sure it can be done if they can offload various high earners which I think is their plan.

8.) 25 Jun 2024 13:43:52
You are right I believe about wages stuie but if you buy a player for say £20m and pay them £5m/ year, if you got them on a ‘free’ you could offer them say £9m/ year instead. Unless Barcelona can offload several of their highest earners they’ll only be shuffling the chairs around on the deck. So if Barcelona sell Raphinha for say £60m and get his £10m/ year off the books, they’ll want his replacement on less than £10m/ year or they’ll need to spend lower on a transfer fee else they won’t have moved the dial.

I see VAR has hit new heights at the olympics. Disallowing an Argentinian equaliser in the16th minute of stoppage time over an hour after they thought they had scored!

ShipleyKopite

1.) 24 Jul 2024 20:46:05
That’s not quite what happened though, so you’re wrong, when Argentina equalised the Moroccan fans ran onto the pitch so game was abandoned for 2hrs, then the game was finished behind closed doors, then that was when VAR intervened with the goal.

2.) 24 Jul 2024 21:34:00
Wind your neck in buddy. I’m not wrong. I know what happened. My point was that VAR took over an hour from the point that the ball went in to say that the goal was disallowed. Yes the game was suspended at the time but it is is another example of VAR making situations worse.

3.) 24 Jul 2024 21:56:02
Morocco led the Group B clash 2-1 and in the final stages of the game Argentina hit the frame of the goal twice before Medina struck in the 16th minute of stoppage time to level the match in Saint-Etienne, his equaliser sparked objects being thrown onto the pitch and players were taken off for their safety as Morocco fans invaded the pitch, supporters were then asked to leave the stadium with a message being projected on screens, after almost two hours without play, the game resumed behind closed doors with three minutes left on the clock and Medina's 106th-minute leveller was chalked off for an offside in the build-up, VAR couldn’t intervene as the game had stopped and could only advise the ref at the restart “buddy”.

4.) 24 Jul 2024 22:21:19
You're reaching hard there, Shipley.

Fans invaded the pitch after the equaliser which caused the game to be stopped. That has nothing to do with VAR.

5.) 24 Jul 2024 22:42:34
Shipley seems like a prickly chap.

But hey, why let silly things like facts stand in the way of a sensational point well made.

All power to you, brother!

6.) 25 Jul 2024 06:47:20
Shipley seems to have stuck his "neck out" a bit too far there.

7.) 25 Jul 2024 09:21:13
Not only that, but the ref had the option to stop the game at 2-2, but he wanted the VAR check so he continued the game for the 3 minutes of extra time afterwards. Var was nothing but helpful here.

8.) 25 Jul 2024 10:57:26
I’m not a fan of VAR but there’s really nothing to see here. Seems to me everybody did the right thing.

9.) 25 Jul 2024 11:33:31
Got to wonder about the hysterical mindset that wants to make a big deal about that.

10.) 25 Jul 2024 11:54:32
Looks like VAR worked, as intended.

10 Jul 2024 20:08:40
1-0 Netherlands. I presume it is Trent’s fault that Rice lost the ball so easily in midfield.

ShipleyKopite

1.) 10 Jul 2024 20:30:17
True, but Trent did win the penalty that Kane scored, so that evens it out!

{Ed014's Note - the main thing is that none of you are in anyway bitter about it!

2.) 10 Jul 2024 20:58:04
Let it go chaps.

3.) 10 Jul 2024 22:00:41
What's anything got to do with Trent? Give it a rest, it's boring.

4.) 10 Jul 2024 22:29:13
TAA is the scapegoat for England winning the group and reaching the final.

08 Jul 2024 09:24:58
Does anybody know what Slot's rotation policy is like?
Does he tend to try and play his strongest 11 or does he like to rotate and keep players fresh?

ShipleyKopite

1.) 08 Jul 2024 10:18:21
Good question that Shipley.

I think its hard to compare what he did at Feyenoord to what he will do in the Premier league though mate.

Same as i think its going to be even more difficult to rotate next season with us being in the CL.

Last season we were making 8 plus changes for some games in the Europa compared to the league.

2.) 08 Jul 2024 10:41:18
I agree, other than the league cup we are unlikely to make any wholesale changes but I like to think that we have enough depth that if he wanted, we could make a couple of changes between league games in the midfield or upfront (I'd ideally like to see a settled back 4)

3.) 08 Jul 2024 11:13:02
It would also depend on the players he has, I would think.

4.) 08 Jul 2024 12:16:34
I think most managers rotates their team don't they?

5.) 08 Jul 2024 12:54:50
JK, might actually end up being a good thing that. Although I'm happy to let the fringe players and young lads have a run, in hindsight I'm sure the constant chopping up of the team can't have helped the players gel and find a good rhythm.

6.) 08 Jul 2024 14:11:46
LBR agree on that mate. Seemed to work in the past when games were coming at us thick and fast and majority of players were going game to game.

Just need to have luck with injuries.

7.) 08 Jul 2024 14:15:33
They only play one less comp. in Holland compared to England so it won't be that big of a shift, IMO. Like someone said, it depends on the players he has and the type of squad (quality, numbers, balances or unbalanced etc. ) that will determine things, IMO. In other words, we shall see.

8.) 08 Jul 2024 17:34:48
We need to play a settled 11 in the league. Play the kids in the domestic cups. When klopp won the league he played the kids in the cups, same when we won number 6.

9.) 08 Jul 2024 20:37:35
I think the best option is simply to wait and see. Aside from the players at his disposal, Slot will have to learn the EPL and each team, as well as the toll it takes on his players as the season goes along. Every coach goes through an evolution of learning for every league he is in. The tactical Jurgen Klopp of the beginning was very different from the tactical Jurgen Klopp at the end.

10.) 08 Jul 2024 21:19:23
Not sure to be honest but I think I saw in one of the Dutch football papers that he usually rotates clockwise but has been known to rotate 1 or 2 anti-clockwise.

Perhaps he might, just might, pick teams that he think will win the next match?

{Ed002's Note - Widdershins then.}

11.) 08 Jul 2024 22:12:14
WDW, you misread the OP's question. It was about Slot's rotation policy, not direction. Surely, Slot prefers his players to rotate in place, rather than in circles? Conservation of energy and all that?

12.) 09 Jul 2024 10:01:47
Slot is an advocaat of the Windmill rotation.

28 Jun 2024 08:36:40
Darwin on target yet again last night!

ShipleyKopite

1.) 28 Jun 2024 11:53:06
Saw the goal. There was a similar chance before then (the exact same run) that the keeper saved in the exact same situation, as well.

Now one thing I did notice is that on both passes made to him for both chances, they were one time passes with no dilly-dallying, extra touches and all the other extra crap. One touch, Darwin made the run and the pass is released on the second touch, Bang.

Sometimes, it's not about systems. It's about what you do within it. I have been saying that we do NOT move the ball quick enuff in forward areas and take WAY too many touches on the ball which helps the defence regroup and kills our attacks. That was the hallmark of our game during Klopp 1.0. We need to get back to this part in order to get the best out of not just Darwin but all our forwards, IMO.

2.) 28 Jun 2024 12:40:59
I agree I was sick and tired of the amount of times Salah, Diaz, Jota and Gakpo were offside last season from all the dithering crap on the balll from everyone else.

3.) 28 Jun 2024 14:29:29
Must have seen a different goal for Nunez against Bolivia.

The one I’ve just watched the Uruguay player clearly plays Nunez in on his fourth touch of the ball.

Yes I pray it’s Alonso.

II think Carvalho has bags of potential (enough to keep him at Liverpool if he can fulfil it) . His problem seems to be his attitude. He was unhappy and struggled at Leipzig when he was just A. N. Other player. From what I read he didn't apply himself well in training and never tried hard enough to win his place in the team but when he was a big fish in a small pond last season at Hull he was happy and played some great stuff. He will need to fight for a chance in the first team at Liverpool so it will be up to him - is he willing to fight to be part of a great club or would he rather be handed an easy life and be a big player at a smaller team.

AG, Why would player need to have datable offspring? I assume he is inferring that the player is their brother-in-law or similar. They could even be their son-in-law. It just means that they are married into their family.

I don’t know how many times this needs saying but you can’t sell a player against his wishes. If indeed he wants to see how this season goes and move to Madrid on a free then we should send him down to the u23s for the season so that he isn’t impeding Bradley’s development.

I think it was fair enough. I don't think it was necessary that Klopp's tactics didn't suit him but that Slots tactics are better suited to him. My takeaway was that Klopp's attacking focus was on the front 3 whereas Slot has a bigger emphasis on the midfield whilst attacking (and from some of the clips I've seen from training it will be great to watch) . I think it will benefit several of the midfielders and I think it could also benefit some of the forwards. I'm quite excited to see it in action.

Wind your neck in buddy. I’m not wrong. I know what happened. My point was that VAR took over an hour from the point that the ball went in to say that the goal was disallowed. Yes the game was suspended at the time but it is is another example of VAR making situations worse.

Ed, just out of interest does 'obligation to buy' instigate a reciprocal 'obligation to sell' for the selling team or could they change their mind?

{Ed001's Note - they have entered into a contract to sell him at the price agreed at the time agreed.}

Even as a coach Slot will still give his thoughts and input on positions he feels should be strengthened or specific player that he feels would fit in well. Hughes may even ask for Slots thoughts on targets that he has identified but at the end of the day it will be Hughes who decides who to move for based on budget and need. Nobody will be a silo working independently.
Both Slot and Hughes have only just taken up their posts so it's not a surprise that the window has been slow so far. Be patient.

If it's peanuts we just need to hope for a bidding war between KP and Nobbys.
