Great interview with Robbo on stick to football. Insightful into Slot and last year. as well as good memories about Klopp and his time with us.
On a side note I watched inside training for Germany. Klopp had his old team back together. Was like watching an old Liverpool inside training but with Klopp speaking in German.

It was interesting when he said that Reuben Peeters would stand around with an iPad, telling players when they couldn't sprint anymore.

I think Gareth Taylor & his coaching staff are doing a superb job with the ladies team this season, which can't have been easy for anyone involved after the sad passing last year of Matt Beard.
Our new signings seem to have fitted in seamlessly, I thought selling Olivia Smith last season to Arsenal for a million quid was a backward step, but it looks like the club used the proceeds wisely.
The ladies are playing some lovely stuff, especially going forwards which I think is the area that women's football is improving rapidly the most.
My favourite player is someone who rarely gets the headlines yet is immensely talented, wears the No8
shirt, midfielder Fuka Nagano. She sees the whole picture, always looking checking & ready to snuff out any danger, superb awareness, amazing balance, very skilful, super savvy, her passing range /accuracy is another level. Fabulous player ๐
( I hope i haven't jinxed her )
I look forward to all their matches, Everton next up this weekend where (Ed025 will like this) Liverpool have never beaten them in a competitive match at Anfield, I'm hopeful that stat is going to be addressed in a few days time.
I think if they can carry on the current path of progression
it won't be long before they'll be lifting a trophy ๐
9 changes from the weekend for yesterday's cup game against Sunderland, squad fully utilised, everyone played their part.
special kudos goes to Natalia Ramos for her sublime individual goal, exceptional ๐

Great player Fuka Nagano, very tidy and efficient, she always seems like she's one step ahead of everybody else, wish we had a number 6 like her in our mens team. Can't pretend that I watch the womens team that often at all, but I did get a Nagano shirt when she signed.
23 Sep 2026 18:15:49
I'd urge fans to watch old matches. Ones during the Dalglish and Rodgers period. Those teams had less quality than what we have available and they passed the ball a lot better and quicker.
Wirtz, wirtz, wirtz is almost like a psyop at this point. We have multiple first team footballers who are extremely poor passers of the ball. If you cannot consistently pass to a teamate and under no real pressure you shouldn't be wearing the badge never mind of mega bucks wages.
All this other talk is nonsense and we've become completely desensitized to some of the slop served up. I think some of our "top players" Are average footballers.
If you continuously lose possession via poor passes you're not up to this level. It kills momentum and undoes everything andoni wants to achieve on the pitch.
I wish "pundits" Would start putting pressure on certain Liverpool player's who can't pass a ball regularly to team mates.
12
23 Sep 2026 18:29:46
Not that I would make excuses for any of these very expensive players, but we are transitioning from a completely different risk-averse approach to one that isn't against losing the ball and using that turnover as an opportunity to counterpress. Shedding the former for the new might take longer than anyone is willing to admit.
Wirtz will be allowed to take risks and he will lose the ball in an Iraola system, by design. The key is that the players behind him are tuned in for the counterpress. At the moment, the default habit is to drop off and get back into shape. It will take time to change that habit.
11
23 Sep 2026 18:36:19
I remember Kenny's second stint and liked the way his team played. He got a lot of the signings wrong, but they play good football.
Liked his interviews as well, even if I didn't understand what he saying.

23 Sep 2026 18:44:40
Longing for seasons where we finished 7th and 8th is absolutely madness.
We had players like Steward Downing, Charlie Adam and Joe Allen playing.
I find it bizarre that you prioritize passing over actually winning football matches.
11
23 Sep 2026 19:26:30
"Wirtz will be allowed to take risks and he will lose the ball in an Iraola system, by design.".
Exactly, Pelican. This is where I think people do not really understand the no.10 role in terms of creativity or even creative players at all.
Whether it be Wirtz, KDB, Bruno (Utd.) or even Coutinho orTrent via RB, it is perfectly normal for such players who try to create to lose the ball a bunch of times. It is literally what they do because that is the cost of them doing that thing you mentioned as in, "Taking risks". Tehre was a time where KDB and Trent ranked amongst the highest in terms of losing possession high up the pitch.
That is something Klopp and even BR did with Cou and Trent. They allowed them to take risks and got players to cover for them.
So anyone losing their marbles because Wirtz loses the ball a bit too much for your liking, I propose you take a chill pill because that is in their nature.
At that point, you are literally asking a human being not to go hungry.
11
23 Sep 2026 20:26:20
I reckon people will get off Wirtz's back if he starts creating and assisting like TAA, de Bruyne and Fernandes did.
At the moment, he's nowhere near.
13
23 Sep 2026 21:05:28
People well understand players attempting the more risky passes will lose the ball more. Thats fair enough. But at the moment it's simple passes he's making a mess of.
11
23 Sep 2026 21:16:38
I prioritise passing over winning matches? ๐
What did we win last season and what do you think we'll win this season?
You don't win an awful lot with poor passers in vital positions.
3
23 Sep 2026 21:25:31
Copy and paste what Rigsby said and suffix it with "up till now, Wirtz has been a complete and utter waste of money".
And Oli, I'm not losing my marbles, I'm simply running out of patience with a play who, up till now, has served no purpose whatsoever.

I just saw a clip of klopps team in 2017 (I think it was) with a break from defence, down the left to Mane, firmino then a cross for Can to score. But the football was beautiful, I think it's so easy to forget how good a team we had playing seamless, aggressive football.

Forgive me if i am wrong but was that losing the ball has become a tactic? !!!
2

Wirtz at his best won't be scoring more than 5 gaols for the season @Oli and that is what people are talking about. That for me is a Flop.

24 Sep 2026 08:22:38
Hodgson was sacked in Jan 2011, Kenny was hastily brought in to steady the ship, which he did. He took the club from 12th to a sixth place finish.
The following season we made two finals, winning the league cup, our first trophy in 6 years and then losing 2 -1 to Chelsea in the FA cup final.
You have to see it in context.

I just watched an edited video of all the assists Wirtz "Would" of had should the chances have been put away! It's really is quite something.
I realise, yes, he's had a few bad games (like anyone can) but if even half of the chances he'd set up been put away his stats would be jumping off the page and there wouldn't be this media attention.
I'm waiting patiently for it all to click so he can stick two fingers up to Carragher and the rest and they can move on to their next target.

Rome, I have no idea why you're outing yourself to me because I didn't mention yours nor anyone's name in my post.
Seems a hit dog will holler or a stuck pig will squeal, as they say in the American South.
@Flo, I fully agree with your point. The thing is that the more confident you are, the more risks you take and the more risky passes you will make.
Clearly, Wirtz is low on confidence hence, is risk-averse and his decison-making and execution is much affected. That is the part the coach, his team mates and the fans should help him with.
Not the constant targeting, scapegoating, bullying and OTT crap we hear and read about as if any of that will make Flo or "insert LFC player here" do better.
Lastly (and not directed to you, if you want any of our players to do well genuinely, you can't go all OTT and give up on them and in the next sentence, "Oh, I really want him to succeed". Nah, you really don't because you're literally hedging in the hope of being right either way the cookie may crumble.
There's a lot of that going on which I find pathetic. We can critique constructively but the OTT reactions, scapegoating and personal attacks are just boring and annoying and leads nowhere.
Either you are part of the solution or part of the problem.
Stop hedging. Pick a lane. And stay there.
Cheers, man.

It doesn't matter a flying fish what Wirtz does tonight or any other night with Germany Bergenred. It's what he does, or more appropriately, doesn't do with Liverpool is what matters. At the moment he's excelling at the 'doesn't do' bit. Unfortunately. I'm with Rigsby and Rome.
2
24 Sep 2026 09:22:13
Totally willing to give him some sympathy Oli, in that his confidence must be on the floor. And confidence is indeed important for the creative players. But at the same time fans are going to become exasperated when it's constantly occurring.
i hope he keeps going because he is clearly trying, but the scrutiny is only going to increase if it doesn't start turning around for him quickly.
1
24 Sep 2026 09:36:33
Not sure how the fans consistently getting on their own players backs will help them to be honest.
It's no surprise Trent left when he was getting pelters from his own fans for years.
2
24 Sep 2026 09:50:56
Trent got nothing but backing off his own fans for years. Lets not make out he was ran out of the club. He went to win his Ballon D'or and tonnes of trophies. Working out well so far.
1
24 Sep 2026 09:55:22
I'm sorry Taurus but if a player is not performing he or she is rightly open to criticism. These boys are getting paid a quarter of a million pounds a week to basically kick a football around a well manicured field.
If they're doing it well they get the plaudits as well as the cash. If they're doing it badly they still get the cash. I'd suggest that helps them ride the waves of negativity somewhat.
1
24 Sep 2026 10:35:27
Florian, Trent was getting pelters from a lot of fans over his defending in the last few years. I remember seeing a lot of negativity to him on this site for a few years before his move. Not saying it led to him leaving, but it probably does not help you stay.
I get what you mean Shanklys Ghost, I just think players get stick a bit too easily these days. We're 5 league games into the season and some fans want to boot out a bunch of players. It sometimes just reads like they want them to fail. I myself have criticised players in the past (Keita, Benteke, Konate etc.) but I think sometimes the pitchforks come out too early. Even when we won everything under Klopp, there was always a whipping boy for the fans.
2
24 Sep 2026 10:53:16
Ok Taurus. I suppose your right. He made a wise move getting away from that grief to go play in front of the much more understanding fans of Los Blanco's.
1
24 Sep 2026 11:00:27
We can at least agree that they have awful fans Florian.
1
24 Sep 2026 11:03:45
I do not understand why criticising a player who is not doing well is such a big deal.
We applaud these players and sing their praises when they are performing well. On the contrary when they are under performing you are asked not to criticise your own players.
I personally do not think it's an issue to criticize our players who are under performing as long as it does not extend beyond the football.
1
24 Sep 2026 11:15:40
Denying that there was a media push to emphasise how bad a defender Trent was does not mean it did not happen.
Similarly there was consequently a wave of online rhetoric from Liverpool fans who agreed with this.
The reasons for the media highlighting Trent's defensive inadequacies, may or may not have been warranted. However before this, as a rule, your average Liverpool fan was not too vocal about Trent's defending. Similar RBs, offering very little going forward, got a pass (see Walker, James - good but always broken, Trippier and the awful Spence).
The latest media campaign is definitely focused on Wirtz. But has anyone noticed there is not a similar campaign for Cherki? Or Havertz? Or.

24 Sep 2026 11:26:37
Oli, throughout the history of football, players have been criticised by supporters, except now you are able to do this at the push of a few buttons, and no one knows who you are. Forums, like this, have replaced the pub table.
Regards to your view of "hedging", that's utter tosh. You can slag off a player - which I am prone to do - but still want them to prove you wrong. It's what supporters do, and always have.

24 Sep 2026 11:59:31
Spoken like someone who has never played the game at any kind of decent level Harry.
Wirtz is obviously good enough to pass consistently to a team mate. He's obviously good enough to create and score lots and lots of goals.
What he doesn't have right now is confidence. That's it. Confidence.
If you've never experienced a lack of confidence as a footballer playing at a decent level then you simply won't understand. We live in an age where people think footballers are pixels on a screen and expect them to do exactly what their supposed attributes tell us.
We don't take into account that Wirtz is a very young man who excelled in his homeland and has moved to a different country with a different language for a big fee and has had the burden of the pressure that brings. Normally in his situation you'd want to get off to a fast start but he wasn't able to as he walked into a grieving squad who had just lost a team mate.
Using words from Robbo who was in the thick of it at the time he said that the players had 'lost their edge' and were all thinking 'what's the point? '.
So you've got this young kid who thinks he's coming to an elite squad with an elite mentality and he walks into a grieving squad who are thinking maybe football isn't the most important thing after all.
Then he's got the enormous pressure of the huge fee and having to live up to that whilst a lot of the players around him, by their own admission were not as interested as they should be and were not performing at 100%.
Do you think that's fair? Is it any wonder that he didn't get off to a flyer and is suffering from a lack of confidence? He must've felt like such an outsider.
We need to support this kid as he's obviously got the ability he just needs to find his feet as so far his time at the club has been very difficult.
I was actually a voice of caution when we signed him in amongst all of the people saying he was an elite player and would be a roaring success but I can totally understand how difficult it's been for any player who joined at the start of last season.
Just give him time and we will see the best of him. Keep this witch hunt going and he'll leave and another team and fans will see the best of him.
23 Sep 2026 16:26:02
I posted a few days ago about what people thought about Carra's criticism of Wirtz which I think isn't warranted as we transition from Slot ball to a high intensity game.
I've just read what Jurgen thought of it and I quote:
๐๏ธ "Jamie did the same thing with Mo Salah years ago. Every week, another criticism, another reason why Salah wasn't doing enough. Then Salah answered on the pitch. Now I see the same movie with Florian."
"Maybe some people forget that football is not played for television clips. I watch Wirtz differently. I see his movement, his work, the spaces he creates. If you only look for goals and assists, you will miss half of what the player gives you."
"Now I'm his Germany coach, so Jamie can keep talking and I'll keep coaching. If Florian comes here and plays the football I know he can play, then maybe the experts will suddenly discover that the boy was never the problem".

Iraola and Jurgan could turn this kid into a pressing machine
I wouldn't sleep on Wirtz just yet.

23 Sep 2026 17:31:17
I love Klopp as much as the next fan but he's going to defend Wirtz, of course he is.
If anyone can get Wirtz playing well and into the player we hope he will be, then it's Klopp.
However the truth is, Wirtz has been pretty poor against Fulham and Bournemouth which has culminated in some big criticism. He has also not yet lived up to the expectations us supporters had when he joined - that much is obvious.
10
23 Sep 2026 17:38:32
Facts right there from Navy Keith
Wirtz has been poor.
6
23 Sep 2026 17:56:03
Wirtz has been poor in games but you can see glimpses of the player he is. But they are becoming less and less in every game but he never stop trying and he is not hiding from the the ball.
His confidence must be low and the scruffy spitting scumbag will not help and he should have no platform to talk about anyone.
6
{Ed666's Note - also heโs getting used to Isak as he was injured for most of last season, add Barcola into the mix and thereโs a lot of new confusion there to work out. Klopp will work on his confidence and Irola will work on his tactics Iโm sure in a month or two weโll have the Wirtz we all desire and if we donโt we sell him him in the summer for a reduced fee (probably) lick our wounds because sometimes football transfers donโt work out itโs all part and parcel of the game, sometimes players that cost exorbitant fees donโt work out.
21
23 Sep 2026 18:09:03
Klopps correct but also patronising to the fact of what he cost and the expectation. Klopp wouldn't care if he cost Liverpool 300 million. The point is wirtz cost a lot of money and is on massive wages which goes right under the radar too.
I do agree on the "not the problem" Bit. I'd judge wirtz more of we had two top midfielders behind him.
And in the form of midfielders that are required.
I can't say I truly care too much ATM about wirtz.
I've been watching old matches with much poorer teams than what we have available and those teams constantly passed the ball better and quicker than this team does. We have a lot of very poor passers of the ball.

23 Sep 2026 18:24:40
Be careful with manager/player quotes these days. There are loads of accounts on twitter that make up quotes like this, even if they sound remotely feasible.
1
23 Sep 2026 18:49:24
I don't think he has been poor, Klopp is 100% right. He does a lot of good work for the team when we're out of possession. It's not given the same statistical importance as XG or whatever.
3
23 Sep 2026 19:09:39
Personally agree with robbo on the overlap the lads came in such a torrid time with the death of Jota he said it took months for the players to even get back to a bit of normality and he said it makes sense to judge them on the end of this season.
2
23 Sep 2026 19:11:47
Nevelle and carragher are scripted to say soundbites and clickbaits, one's a failed manager the the other didn't have the balls to go into coaching.

There is a reason why Carragher never made it as a manager and spent his career being a basic player, he got lucky being a loval lad otherwise the club and the fabs would have had him out the door long before he retired.

Ally McBeal, MetroRed?

24 Sep 2026 06:41:46
I am not too sure if that is a real comment, joke, sarcasm, or what Rigsby because I don't have the faintest idea who Ally McBeal is, if he exists?
For clarification, if there is such a person, I meant Ally McCoist - the man is bearable as a pundit or commentator and hilarious as a human being!
I really can't think of another I can bear listening to.

Carragher is a blue at heart never forget that!!
He may claim to be a red he may of been a reds player but he is still a blue inside his family are blues. Did not have the balls to become a manager but has the cheek to criticise managers.
As for Neville failed manager who also criticises managers and players, players that he could not lace their boots. I turn down the sound when these two merchant bankers are on TV.
3
24 Sep 2026 08:33:56
You da man, Jurgen!
As I've said a few times, Wirtz is our best footballer by miles. If you have players who can learn to see what he is about to do / is capable of doing we will be a much better team. In football ability terms Nyoni may get close if he continues to progress but Dom, Macca and Grav aren't on the same level of Wirtzy.
1
24 Sep 2026 08:50:23
Im surprised Klopp even chimed in but if the quotes are true then, all he did was out Carra for who he really is. A spoofer and Shock Jock (google is your friend here).
As I said before, he is trying to be the U. S version of Stephen A Smith. Just say stuff to generate click and attack player X, manager Y and club Z, depending on the agenda his handlers want to push.
And Klopp was right on one other thing, as well. Carra had it in for Dom the year we won the title. Then it was Salah last season and now, it is Wirtz and IsaK
Hold your horses guys because it will be Barcola next.
Such people should be ignored because their "opinions" mean nothing if an actual agenda to tear people down, is behind them, imo.
1
24 Sep 2026 09:14:39
If Wirtz is our best then I'd hate to know who's our worst. He's totally ineffectual so far and has shown little to me to suggest that will change any time soon, if at all. We'll know more come next May I suppose. All only my opinion of course.
0
24 Sep 2026 11:55:07
@SG, why do you always look to emphasise the negative. I get your opinion that Wirtz isn't any good, but, if I'm honest I think that's because you are looking for him to make mistakes rather than looking at it from the point of view of what is is doing and trying to do.
0
24 Sep 2026 14:22:18
The total opposite WDW. I'm waiting for him to show some worth. I want the man to succeed as much as you and anyone else but he has shown very little if anything to suggest he will. I never saw him playing before he arrived here tbh but he was described as a generational talent and so came with big expectations. The least I expected from him was to show a bit of strength on the ball and provide some telling passes, a few assists and perhaps even score the odd goal or two never mind being able to dominate a game or to be inspirational to those around him. His fee and wages suggest that he should be doing that but he's not. He did very little last season, is doing very little this season and I'm only saying what I see. Perhaps I expected too much from him but I certainly didn't expect so little. Like I said before, I will judge him at season end and we'll all see then whether it was all a Slot thing or a Wirtz thing all along. The ball is totally in his court and I hope I'm eating my words come May 27. In the interim I'll continue to call him out and any other player that I believe should be better. They're all getting very well paid to do a decent job for the club and supporters.
23 Sep 2026 16:03:29
Considering the number of "can't defend" and "constantly being run through" posts on here it's interesting reading the statistical analysis on the BBC website. We currently have the 3rd lowest xGA in the league (only Arsenal and Forrest have a better xGA) and the joint-best defensive record.
5
23 Sep 2026 16:31:22
Does anyone really think that these XG stats mean anything. I prefer what my own eyes tell me which is that we have improved defensively from last season but that we still lack a bit of discipline/bite in our midfield. XG stats don't tell me that.
3
23 Sep 2026 16:39:26
If that's what stats say, then I have completely changed my mind. Who needs a midfielder that can tackle or has some defensive discipline. Always thought them talents were overrated in a midfielder. Haha.
1
23 Sep 2026 19:42:17
SHipley apart fro m the XG stuff I do not really care for in general, it just shows that at the end of the day, football is a team sport.
So defensively, we are doing well because guys are doing a better job of tracking back and covering spaces esp. out wide on the counter.
A player can help but the team is ultimately what makes things tick over.
0
24 Sep 2026 13:05:29
I'm getting bored of saying it but the reason we are better defensively is because we have started to defend on the front foot. As soon as the ball is played forward the defence are high enough to put the receiver under pressure and nick the ball or foul.
Because the defence are higher and defending more aggressively it means the midfield are closer so if the ball bounces into midfield we have players there to win second balls.
It was a relatively small change that absolutely needed to be done. Last season the defence would run back towards their own goal causing a big gap in front of them which allowed players to pick up the ball in space and run at them.
The midfield had no chance as the gap was too big for them to cover so they just couldn't get close to people.

Good one, Mick.
At first glance, I'd take out Bruce and add Alisson. Therefore, I would have to take out Firmino and I'd add Suarez (controversial, I know). I'd also take out Heighway and I'd add Mane. Having done that, I'd then be tempted to go for Staunton instead of Riise.
As you say, you are leaving out some of the greatest players to ever play for us.

Love Bobby but I'd take him out so that Allison can go in goal.

Going through this exercise makes you realise how many of our best players are Scottish.

Dalglish has to be in there somewhere.

It's a nigh on impossible task Rome, Bobby's position as a striker / playmaker meant no Keegan, Kenny, Beardsley, Suarez etc, madness, but being at Anfield with Bobby's song bellowing out from all 4 stands created the most spectacular atmosphere which I can admit had me watery eyed with joy many times, that alone can drive a team to victory, plus he was brilliant ๐คฉ
His inclusion meant ommiting Ali, our greatest ever goalkeeper ๐
Souness has in my opinion been our best midfielder / captain
which also means no Hansen, Kenny or Robbo ๐
Selecting Gerrard eliminates dozens ๐ฉ
Rush has to be there, growing up watching teletext for score updates it was almost guaranteed it'll pop up Liverpool 1-0 Rush ๐
And for me Stevie Highway was the best out and out bye line / cross into the box winger we've ever had.
And who would be the manager ๐คทโโ๏ธ
For results it has to be Paisley
For passion Shanks and or Klopp
I'm going for another lay down .

I agree with @LFC8, but it also made me wonder what would be our best team if we could only pick lads who were born in Liverpool?

Think all the posts show that we haven't been blessed with great LB's in the past, Robbo is clear until maybe Alan Kennedy, and I am old enough to remember him and even he wasn't the best(but had a knack of important goals)

Great article on BBC Sport about Lewis Koumas (currently on the first page).
He's one I really really want to succeed - born in Chester and has been a Liverpool fan since birth, as has his Dad who played in youth teams with Gerrard and Owen at Liverpool.
He's a bit of a slow burn - 21 and only just breaking through - but we had another Welsh striker a few years back who had a similar trajectory, and he did OK.

Craig Bellamy?

My first thought was Harry Wilson but he's not exactly a striker so I'm not sure who it is now.

And the prize goes to Robbo! Chester was a vague clue too!
Have a warm round of applause, Robbo!

I automatically thought Rushie, but was too shy to say! I see him around Chester, when I'm there. I leave him be.

I thought Rushie was obvious my reply was tongue in cheek.

Ian Rush wasn't a slow burn, Zed.
He came with a big reputation as a teenager & soon lived up to it.

I'll take your word for it Rigsby, his breakthrough at the start of the 1980s was a wee bit before my time - when I started following us, he was already established (mid-80s).
I was looking purely at the fact that he didn't get his first full season (according to the stats - and by full I mean 30+ games) until he was a similar age to that which Koumas is now.

23 Sep 2026 17:49:37
No worries, Zed, and you're right that Rush's first full season was his second with us.
He was 20 at the start of the season but we went on to win the League and he was our top scorer.
I'd be happy if Koumas achieves half of what Rush did, mate.

Listening to Andy Robertson talk about the impact of Diogo Jota's death on the team and seeming to attribute at least some of last season's on pitch struggles to it, I was reminded of something from a few years back which moved me at the time and I still think of as a display of huge mental strength and resilience.
2008 Champions League semi final second leg. We were up against Chelsea, remarkably the third Champions League semi final in four years that we'd played Chelsea. Went to extra time. Chelsea were awarded a penalty and Frank Lampard scored it. His mum had died a few days prior to the match. Huge match, huge pressure and he not only played at a time of huge personal loss but was able to compose himself to take a crucial penalty in extra time. I hate Chelsea and I'm not a massive fan of Lampard but for that moment in those circumstances I admired him hugely.
