Slot is gone come the summer, this was engineered some months.
He knows it, the club knows it and the players know it.
In my opinion, the whole situation has been and is being dealt with appallingly.

Appalling is a soft word, mate. This is a disaster of a season, and I bet we will lose against Spurs.

Hi Carra, thanks for the update. Could you pls elaborate on the engineered part? If one is to stick with a manager, at least support him, and keep your cards to yourself. If the players and Slot both know this, no wonder any motivation to salvage this situation has gone down the drain.
Then again, these are highly paid professionals, should they not be giving their all anyways on the field, which some are not doing?

I think, before Slot, we should let go of the people who have hung Slot out to dry, i.e. Edwards and Hughes. What motivation would one have to come to the job every day knowing he is out in a few months?
It is just beyond bizarre that the team looks like it needs another 500 million to compete, when we just spent that last summer.
We need to let go of Slot, Salah (not the poster here :) ), Konate, Macca, Jones, Georgi, Gapko to start with.

KBL, nobody knows when he will go for sure, but you'd have to be oblivious to not be able to see he will not survive past this summer.
This has been the worst season for over a decade in my opinion. Probably Roy Hodgson's 6 months is how far back you'd have to go to find something similarly as bad. We're only still in the mix for the Champions League spaces because Villa are wobbling under the pressure and Chelsea/Man United had horrendous starts which resulted in Maresca and Amorim getting fired.
There is just no universe in which Slot is not sacked for this. You simply cannot spend circa £450m on a title winning team and not even be able to play exciting football; never mind actually compete for trophies. Realistically, even if we turn it around against Galatasaray at Anfield, we are not playing well enough to actually win the Champions League, and it'll take a minor miracle for us to beat Man City at the Etihad in the FA Cup quarter finals. They battered us 3-0 there in the league and that score line flattered us to be quite honest. Our owners are patient, but they will not be happy at such a significant outlay being squandered to the extent our revenue for the next financial year is could quite realistically see a 15-20% decline.
People who don't understand the financial side of the game will point towards the net spend (due to albeit significant sales) but those people are failing to realise is that the money we've spent last summer will show in the accounts for approximately the next 5 years (depending on contract lengths, as a transfer fee is spread across the length of a contract). On the flip side, the money that we brought back in last summer through sales will only show on the accounts for the 2025 financial year. If we miss out on Champions league football that £450m split 5 ways, leaves a £90m black hole in the 2026 accounts that we will struggle to fill, especially on top of investing further to replace players like Salah, Robertson, Virgil and Alisson in the next 6-18 months; all of whom are not likely to recoup much, if any money at all.
This dreadful season on the pitch could have a serious knock on effect to our ability to rebuild the team in the face of losing our first choice keeper, our first choice CB/captain, our vice captain and our 3rd all time top scorer. Anybody making light of this seasons performance, or the amount of money we spent last summer is, frankly, being a fool. Slot and Hughes will have some serious questions to answer, and at least one of their heads will roll, probably both. I'm not even in the know and I can say with conviction that Slot will not be Liverpool manager next season.

MK S, I agree with everything you've said there, but all I'm saying is no one knows for sure, and with the like of Hughes and Edwards around, nothing would surprise me. Of course, your reasoning and comments make absolute sense, but do the 2 mentioned above have the same sense?

11 Mar 2026 18:30:57
I'm with MK, I cannot see us beating City at their place in the cup. They've beaten us comfortably twice this season, and as for the home game against Galatasaray, Slot has normalised losing at Anfield in a way that makes Roy Hodgson look competent.
It's more likely that we get nothing out of that than somehow claw that one back. They know how weak we are in midfield and defence, and Slot has not bothered to fix that, but instead he's rigidly stuck to tactics that have failed all season long.

It's beyond a joke. I'm at a loss to understand why Ngumoha and Jones didn't come on at all tonight. If I were Ekitike I'd be getting frustrated and hoping Slot Foxtrot Oscars soon, the lad needs service, and he's getting Jack from Salah and Gakpo. Gakpo even came on ahead of Ngumoha when there's clearly something seriously wrong with his hand/arm.
And don't get me started on Konate who's gone back to being Bambi on crack.
Any caretaker for what's left of this disastrous season will do. 14 defeats the season. SMH.

The decision to stick with him to the end of the season (which I pray to god is accurate) is in of itself cowardly. Slot should have gone in November and most could see it then, if not before. I know he's not a good manager per say but I cannot believe for a second that Gerrard would do any worse as interim until the summer.
As a fan there is no way he would accept that type of football or performance, even if he doesn't lose, lose with some f****** pride! All Klopp's work being undone in 18 months. Awful.

At a loss to think that anyone would want things to continue like this with Slot given another season.
The results haven't been great, but the performances have been even worse - at times when we've won we have been awful & it's been like this for over a year, so it's not player turn over in summer.
Such pedestrian & uninspiring football and LFC and the supporters who pay good money at the ground deserve better.
Thank you Arne for the tweaks you made at the start of your tenure which took players Klopp left & turned them into title winners, but now this is fully your system & "tactics" it's simply not working & you seem unwilling or unable to change so it's time to go.
A new manager bounce would hopefully propel us to a CL spot & will also give new guy a while to get his feet under table in summer effected by players zipping off for WC.

Hopefully it doesn't take too long for any new manager to completely uncoach everything Slot has programmed in to the players.

Over the course of a season, what transpires on the football pitch is the result of squad management. An odd game here and there is generally down to the players not performing on the day. Over 50+ games, it's generally down to the manager and his vision of what he wants. This is all on Arne. There is zero debate about it.
Agree8

11 Mar 2026 10:28:26
It's gonna take a new coach and his staff a while to cure the Slot rot that has infected the squad. The longer it's left to fester, the tougher it will be to put right. He should have gone months ago, and that would have given the new regime time to assess the squad and go about fixing the problems, like the lack of fitness and lazy attitude, ready for the start of the new season.
If Slot's position will only be reviewed at the end of the season, so should Hughes' and Edwards' tenure likewise.

He looks slightly better than the league he's in, but it's a weak league. We do need a physical presence in midfield, so I wouldn't be against signing him, but realistically we need a nailed-on starter, a midfield hard man, for the next manager. It just depends whether the transfer team want to get the finger out and actually fill out the squad properly.

From what I read somewhere, he surprised the scouts with a standout performance in an academy match. They then tried to make something happen in January, but it didn't work out.
Brighton are very keen. They see him as the next Baleba.
But even then, they would probably send him to their second club for a year to get more experience first, I would think.

BalloonCack, yeah, we need someone who can dominate, put tackles in, lock down the midfield, break the game up, but with Grav's new contract seeing him on near 300k, I'm not so sure the club feels the same. It will be interesting to see what happens with Macca if he goes, and what type of player the club brings in to replace him, but for now, I don't see us bringing in competition for Grav.
RedQ, agreed. I don't know how many times I've heard that we're monitoring players, only for somebody else to snap them up and see their value skyrocket. Had we made moves for Semenyo last summer and Olise the year previous, we could have snapped both of them up for less than £90 million. Seems like we wait too long for the stat men to accrue their vital data before making moves these days.

Appreciate my comment is slightly tongue-in-cheek, as Brighton will have more capacity to give development game time to these players, etc. However, it would be nice to get to the front of the queue and be successful with one of these hidden gems.

Any updates on a RB option for the summer?
I like the idea of Denzel Dumfries, great player, great experience, great pace.
Had been injured this season but if we get assurances that he is recovered, he is a cheap option that could do a great job and help Bradley with his rehabilitation and coaching on his defensive duties.

09 Mar 2026 07:07:16
We certainly need one, as Bradley will be 2027 before he gets back to it. Top 4 and another big summer overhaul incoming.
I am personally not a fan of a massive overhaul of the squad, but we really need it.
2 wingers.
2 full backs.
2 centre halves (if Ibou and Joe leave).
2 midfielders (specialist dm is a must).
I'm happy to have Frimpong as a backup right winger and full back in the squad, but I would say we need another left back if Robbo leaves, and a right full back for obvious reasons.

Dumfries, great purchase 4 years ago, a waste of time and money now.
I'd be more tempted to wait and see how Livramento's contract is negotiated, and sound out whether we are interested. Newcastle have gone backwards. Helps out with HG.
Agree7

09 Mar 2026 09:51:23
Livramento or Kayode would be amazing if possible to do, but given we have to spend big on wingers, I expect they will likely go for cheaper options rather than spend £50m+ on a third RB.
Regardless of whether Slot is here or not, Geertruida seems like a smart squad option, as he can play CB, DM and RB. He would probably cost £25m.
Other names we have been linked with for RB are:
Givairo Read (Feyenoord) - very young, very talented - probably £25m.
Martim Fernandes (Porto) - very young, very talented - probably £25m.
Oscar Mingueza (Celta Vigo) - former La Masia grad, free agent.
Vanderson (Monaco) - probably £30-35m.
Rolland Sallai (Galatasaray) - would be a cheap squad player, something we don't really do - seems unlikely.
If Spurs go down (unlikely), Pedro Porro might be one to keep an eye on.

Givairo Read is a name that keeps repeatedly cropping up on here and I think it would fit in with the way we tend to do business.
Livramento, for me, would be a complete non-starter. Newcastle are not exactly gonna be queuing up to do business with us, and if he leaves them, I suspect he will join City as part of their "clearly we have gotten away with those 215 charges so we might as well spend, spend, spend!" business plan.

I have seen Ekitike dive and playact too. I think Klopp once told Bruno to stop doing that after a game, and that he was a far better player without it. I don't think he would be able to say that anymore if he still managed us with some of ours doing the same every match. Macca is definitely the worst of the lot.

But, Elnino, these guys are not toddlers, you have to tell to hold your hand. A lot of them are very experienced pros. I like Macca as a player. He has been here 3 seasons, and for me it's only this season I've been disappointed with him. But he has been really poor.

Moaning, lol.
We're talking some decent players on absolute fortunes a week, because that's the only way that they'll sign, it seems. Either that, or Hughes and Edwards are intent on bankrupting us.
It's not justified, and it's not sustainable. Why are Gakpo and Grav on the closer ends of 300k a week?! It's ludicrous.
What's sob earning next, 350k for him to stay?! These players are not superstars, or near the level of a De Bruyne. Our wage bill has gone completely off the scale under Hughes, and we've nothing to show for it.

The owners have always made the club run as self-sufficient, so don't worry about the finances. If the club didn't think they could afford it, they wouldn't agree to it. And, by signing him to a 6yr contract, the club can virtually name their price should Real or Barca try to sign him.

It's easy to forget because he's been around forever, but Grav is still only 23. He's still got a couple of years before he begins to hit his peak. We've seen for 6 months last season what he's capable of.
Whoever is in charge should be playing him and Szob in a double pivot, with him hanging back like last year.

Sorry, I do care about finances. This is a club that had a lot of financial issues not so long ago, and, while finances have gotten better, I worry that the team overpays for average players and gets into Manchester United territory.
Paying that much is not good for the squad. Then Szobo will ask more than Grav. Then others will ask for more, and that only works if you have steady income, but we don't even know if we are getting CL next season, so it's a big risk with the uncertainty around the manager and performances.
It would have made more sense when Klopp was here, because we were more consistent in performances.
I hope the rumours are not true because I'm sorry about the club, and finances are part of it.

@Hamo, there's a club that meets every second Thursday of the month at The Elephant in Woolton. They meet up to worry about the money the club spends on contracts, and it's pretty good cos even though they worry about it, they know that it's nothing really to do with them as they don't own the club.

Our wage bill, on the scale of last season that was published, was as high as it was because of the incentivised bonuses. We won the league. Every player cashed in on the bonus as a result.
Unfortunately, the football world is spiraling out of control financially.
The numbers we see are obscene to the everyday person, but that is the sport as we know it now.
The horses have bolted, and there is no way to get them back if you want to remain competitive.

Gravenberch is 23, with the best years of his career ahead of him. He is pretty integral to the way we play, and was one of the standout players in a title-winning team last year. How much do you think he is worth? It's all very well thinking that, when players ask for that much money, you let them go and scout the next Gravenberch, if only life was that easy.
As for the suggestion that we shouldn't be overpaying for average players like United, this isn't a de Light, Shaw, Mazraoui, or Ugarte we are talking about. The likes of Szoboszlai and Gravenberch are players any top European team would covet.

I, for one, am glad he signed a new contract. We have to get used to the fact that money in football is crazy. I'm confident in FSG to run the club in a self-sustaining way.
If we can and want to do it, then we will do it. If that ends in failure, then people usually pay with their jobs and reputation.
Maybe 300k a week is just what first-team regulars get now, and indispensable players get 400k. Squaddies get 150k. It's just the way of the world.
I'm sure we will sell an academy graduate to pay for these contracts, because thems the rules.

I expect the renewal is predominantly to protect his value. I wouldn't trust the figure being bandied about. He was already on quite a high salary, as we had to convince him to join the club while we were out of the CL, and, at the very least, match his Bayern salary.
I doubt it is as huge a rise as is being quoted, as it would make Dom and Ibou deals even more complicated.

Wdw - "We can say costs are increasing and football clubs are not immune to that, but the vast majority of their expenditure is still player wages and transfer fees," says Dan Plumley, principal lecturer in sport finance at Sheffield Hallam University.
"Clubs are constantly chasing revenue down, not to make a profit, but to stretch their squad costs as much as possible.
"That's where clubs run the risk of alienating fanbases because a lot of fans will see that for what it is.
"Clubs have unwavering loyalty from their customers that you don't really get in any other industry, and there's potential for exploitation that comes with that."

Thanks for that, very instructive. Would you say that the reason the fanbase is at odds with Liverpool is because we bought Wirtz or Ekitike, or because Slot is performing badly?
The quote contains a generalisation about the cost of buying players across the board. As a generalisation, it is a fair enough statement, but it doesn't address, for instance, the FFP changes that are coming in next season which are primarily based on squad costs.
It's pretty obvious that clubs buy the best players that they can and, equally obviously, pay the 'market price' in terms of wages to obtain the player's signature, but there are limits as to what a club can and will be able to do.
