Is there much of a chance that Emre stays?

Yankee Red

{Ed002's Note - I think it is unlikely. There are a number of clubs who will look to direct talks with the player in January.}

1.) 19 Dec 2017 17:56:25
And if he does indeed leave in January ed do you expect a replacement, or wait until the Summer?

{Ed002's Note - Clubs are not looking to a January transfer but to talk to the player about a pre-contract for a summer move. Liverpool has more than enough midfield players at the moment and Nobby Keita is arriving in the summer.}

2.) 19 Dec 2017 18:21:09
Cheers ed. Emre qnd Couts will be missed but they both hsve the chance of playing on a higher platform. can't fault them for wanting to improve there playing careers and win trophys.

3.) 19 Dec 2017 18:45:08
What higher platform is Emre Can going to be playing on? Juventus are not a bigger club than Liverpool, either or Dortmund. What everyone and Emre needs to realise is that if he was under a longterm contract Juventus would have no interest in him, they'll promise him the world now but after a few poor performances or when the next young Italian star comes along he'll be dropped or sold in a flash. for a nice tidy profit of course.

{Ed002's Note - what he means is that he will be playing at the higher level - challenging for silverware.}

4.) 19 Dec 2017 19:27:01
I know what he means. he'll be challenging for silverware staying here.

5.) 19 Dec 2017 19:45:52
Ed 002, I am curious as to your thoughts on how Liverpool should progress as a club that can continually challenge for trophies? Anytime one of our players takes their game to the next level (Suarez, Couthino, Etc), clubs try and buy them from us. Yet when we dig our heels in we end up taking stick for it.
We can try and develop youngsters but once they turn 25 if those same clubs come knocking wanting to buy the cycle will repeat itself. Do we just need new owners with more money?

{Ed002's Note - That is just the transfer process - I am not sure why Liverpool fans feel hard done by. It is the same for all clubs.

This was a simple six point plan to get the entire club back on a good footing that I proposed a while back:

1. Corporate Business: Liverpool have done well financially out of the sponsorship and partnership agreements but in some cases have sold their soul to the devil and in others the deal is not as good as it could be for a club of the profile of Liverpool. Look to move away from Standard Chartered and bring in a higher profile and better paying sponsor as soon as is practical. The deal with New Balance/Warrior was a major mistake and the club need to exit it as soon as possible – sadly the boat to get a deal with Adidas after Chelsea dumped them has sailed. Any deals with organisations that are socially questionable (e.g. Bet Victor), socially bankrupt or have caused the club embarrassment (e.g. Dunkin’ Donuts), nonsense (Nivea and the club’s official coconut water supplier TCC), are from a country with controversial human rights (flag carrier Malaysian Airlines – who replaced just as bad Indonesia’s Garuda) should be cancelled or run down as soon as possible. Being on morally better ground will make a club with Liverpool’s profile to get better profile sponsors.

Status: Still not good.

2. Football Business: Liverpool has revamped in the past three years from top to bottom but yet Klopp is still getting an easy ride and the transfer windows are far from successful. Two things to do (a) get a decent Director of Football in (not taking the advice of anyone who suggests Damien Comolli would be a good idea), and (b) explain to Klopp that his inability to adapt is a large part of the problem as to why Liverpool are still inconsistent.

Status: Michael Edwards appointed - not ideal in my view.

3. Fan Considerations: Establish a point of liaison with fan representatives (Ed001 perhaps and the sad fat guy who runs the other site - I don't recall his name) but do not involve the Spirit of Shankly in any way – a bunch of morons in a pub who want the club handed over to them and are planning already to give the owners a hard time starting again this summer need to be brushed aside. If they are interested in buying the club they need to be told to have their bankers call when they have a $1B Banker’s Draft in hand and the club will be sold to them. If they want to act responsibly and represent supporters they need to lose the aggressive and controntational approach.

Status: The club has addressed this and appointed someone.

4. Wrest Power Back from the Players: Players at high profile teams (in particular in the Premier League and a few other individual players dotted around Europe) are not fully focussed on doing what they are employed to do, and in many cases are paid well to do. I would get someone in (a really knowledgeable football guy who can advise the club) and have them speak to each of the players to really understand where their focus is and where they want to be. I would also have a suitable advisor go right through all of the coaching staff and look at the methods of coaching. I would then get the players together and tell them that the club will be making addendums to their contracts requiring such things as responsible behaviour, not wearing flimsy designer football boots that offer little protection, wearing black boots only in games, responsible usage of social media, banning all at club visits by hairdressers and car salesmen, banning the use of all hair care products etc.. The players need to be controlled in any interviews and interviews, and any endorsements, should all be arranged through the club. Any players to which the club is making payments to third parties for such nonsense as image rights need to be moved on or the contracts amended at no penalty to the club. Then they need to be asked if they buy in to the club and these changes – if they don’t their agents can be told that the club is happy for them to find new employers for their charges.

Status: Nothing has been done.

5. Reserves and Loans: Firstly get some structure and planning for a career path and look to establish relationships with a couple of sides such that the loan system can work for the club. The liaison structure is critical as whilst managers may occasionally see players it is generally something undertaken by others dedicated to the task. As an example, each loan player from Chelsea has a liaison officer assigned (some are ex-players) who regularly see them, deal with any issues and report progress back to the club. For instance there was a problem with a couple of players in the Netherlands and that resulted in the club having them get involved with spending some time with the local community (schools and charities). Chelsea has also helped clubs they have and are building relationships with - this may include providing training facilities, loaning coaching staff, having ex-players works with them in some capacity etc.. They have a structure in the Netherlands and Belgium in addition to relationships with South American and old Eastern Bloc countries. They are currently working a deal with a Champions League side as well. Similarly in Italy I know that the clubs with a significant number of players on loan have regular contact and bring them back as a group for training on a couple of occasions mid-season. I am sure there will be someone at Liverpool keeping contact with the younger players on loan where there are legal responsibilities as some are still technically children but others on loan from Liverpool reported the occasional text message only – simply not good enough. Many clubs in Spain and Portugal have built relationships with other sides and it helps with brining in players from South America.

This still needs to be addressed.

6. On Field: Whilst the fans want significant changes every year the club needs to get in to the position of making small changes to improve the team each season, not simply discarding the work done and starting again. It has not worked with the recent managers at the club and Damien Comolli was a massive mistake (which I did explain here the day he joined). Right now the side is not too far away but like other managers it is a task Klopp struggles with – so the club need a good footballing guy as Director of Football to help out. Financially the club need to be self-sufficient or making a profit – particularly given the additional media income. Give Klopp the marquee buy of Julian Brandt this summer and then fix the problem areas though sales.

Status: Financially the club is better placed, ion field the side is playing well but is still inconsistent - but moving in the right direction.}

6.) 19 Dec 2017 20:51:20
Cheers Ed for the response. I also appreciate your answers to the follow up questions. To your response on the status of the club, I agree with each of your six points, and I hope you don't mind me adding my opinions on the matters.

1) I miss the Carlsberg and Adidas days - though we can still do better. Perhaps Nike would pick us up after Man United moved to Adidas?

2) Why can't we purchase a decent defender?

3) I think Tony Barrett is doing a fine job, but will struggle since Liverpool has some of the most delusional fans out there.

4) I don't think we'll ever see this happen. The Spice Boys got this tradition started at Liverpool, and even a consummate professional like Stevie G couldn't get rid of it.

5) I hate when you use Chelsea as a role model (personal reasons, namely jealousy) but I think they are the perfect one for how a loan system should work. IMO, Chelsea is one of the most well run businesses in football, up there with clubs like Monaco, Porto, Ajax. They always seem to break even or profit during transfer windows while improving their squad.

6) Inconsistent yes, but also fun to watch.

I'm not the most knowledgeable fan on the business side of things. I've only been watching the Premier League for the past 15 years (I'm American), and the stuff available to read doesn't seem to provide nearly as much about how things truly are as the Eds on this website. If I'm wrong, on anything, please correct me. But I do like the current status of our club. We are an entertaining side, can compete with the biggest of clubs on any given match day, and have plenty of room for improvement. Thanks again for your time!

{Ed002's Note - I am also an American. But not a Yankee. I think your points are good.}

7.) 19 Dec 2017 20:55:15
Your knowledge Ed2 is absolutely incredible and I admire it, thanks for the second time today.

{Ed002's Note - You are most welcome.}

8.) 19 Dec 2017 22:33:27
It's more of a satirical use of "Yankee" for me. I'm calling myself out as an American before anyone else can. I'm actually from the Southeastern US where Yankee is often used in a derogatory fashion towards "outsiders. "

{Ed002's Note - I am from the West Coast - you would never hear the word used.}

9.) 19 Dec 2017 23:08:15
brilliant, absolutely brilliant stuff Ed. The New Balance deal ends after next season, I believe do you know if they are speaking with anyone else or is it too soon?

{Ed002's Note - I think it goes on rather longer and I am not aware of any discussions with others just yet.}

10.) 19 Dec 2017 23:10:37
Fantastic and appreciated review of the clubs current status ed002. Cheers for your input, although iv no doubt it won’t be long before someone disagrees/ takes imaginary insult and says something silly on here!

11.) 20 Dec 2017 03:52:24
Great post Ed2, touched on a lot of good subjects there. Curious, what is your opinion on Liverpool getting a B team? Worth it?

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool already has one - they are currently top of play of Premier League 2.}

12.) 20 Dec 2017 10:28:35
Wow, Ed002, I don't even know what to say! Someone smart at Melwood should be hiring you right now if only there was anyone from the echelons reading or following this site. Even though you're not a Liverpool fan, your vision for how to run the club is unbelievable! Who could argue with all you just laid out?
Thanks Ed!

13.) 20 Dec 2017 10:48:14
Fantastic insight and comments to move LFC forward, thanks for that eds.

14.) 20 Dec 2017 17:58:04
As always great insights. Stil I have a couple of questions for you Ed 002, and a couple of comments.

1. I know we have made many mistakes appointing Sporting directors; but i wish to know what would make a candidate for Sporting director a good fit for this job, and what would make him/ her a good fit for liverpool sporting director spot.

2. In your point about Wrest Power Back from the Players, you talk about player's image rights, oeher third parties payments, and some of the other clauses you would addemend. So my question, is there any big club that right now has this kind of clauses on their players (specially on their star players) . I ask, beacuse as mucha as this is desirable, i can't imagine players and specially agents, nowdays would like to sign this kind of clauses.

3. I don't know if this was part of your point about football business, but our status and image in the transfer system has been awful for years. So if we can't clean our image, and if we can't get a good mix of players in tranfer windows we will continue in a all life transition team, just bringing good prospects or signing lots of mediocre players, never stablishing a team that can really compete at the highest level again.

4. I love Klopp, he has made a stronger team and squad, but you are right he should have found some solutions by now in problems we have had for a long long time. Stil impressed Migs's our number 1 (I like the lad, but just can't have him as n1 of a team trying to win PL and CL) . Defense and the issue of fitness/ rotation/ consistence are just other.

Hopefully we'll get back into greatest teams again. Since one or two years i think we are finally going forward; just hope we continue to go that way.

{Ed002's Note - (1) Yes, Liverpool has screwed up. Better options would be the likes of Rangnick, Zorc, Monchi, Marotta or Raul Sanllehi (who has just joined Arsenal. The pick would be Luis Campos. (2) Yes, at least one Liverpool player benefitted from substantial payments up until recently from image rights. Other clubs have players who have a serioes of strange clauses. In the past there have been players paid in classic cars and oil paintings and many paid off shore in tax free havens. Most of that has gone. (3) Liverpool need to act professionally for a sustained period if the wish to build a good image and have other clubs show respect to them. (4) Klopp is a good manager but the great manager learn from their mistakes.}

15.) 20 Dec 2017 20:23:47
Thank you very much for the response Ed 002! I got an idea of the kind of sporting direcor you'll be looking for.

01 Sep 2017 18:57:09
Eds,

Other than VVD, did Liverpool make any real efforts at signing other centre halfs this past window? If so, do you mind providing who? Personally I thought it was a good window, would've been great had a proper CB been signed. And I'm wondering if Klopp felt the need to improve this area of the squad but no one was available, or if VVD was chased as he specifically was wanted.

Thanks,

Yankee Red

{Ed002's Note - No, just a very low bid. Van Dijk was the wanted player.}

1.) 01 Sep 2017 19:23:25
Sounds from the Howedes interview that we had some interest in him.

2.) 01 Sep 2017 19:31:42
hi edd002 im just curious to why we didn't have a plan b like we had with salah when brandt wouldn't come. What was the reason we didn't move onto other targets? . was it just a case of we thought that southampton would eventually let him go which was clear way before deadline day they werent.

{Ed002's Note - That would be one for Klopp.}

3.) 01 Sep 2017 20:44:28
There was a lack of decent CBs available. Hence City going for Evans. Just be patient it's a marathon not a sprint and we are well placed with what we have.

4.) 01 Sep 2017 21:53:52
Ings N Things, that's what I was getting at. Seems our lack of effort at signing a CB was due to a lack of availability of reliable options. I wouldn't quite say we are well placed with what we have though. Three senior CBs are all that are on the books (I'm not including Gomez as he hasn't had a true run there yet) . I still think our XI could compete with anyone, but we're an injury to Matip away from a slight crisis.

5.) 01 Sep 2017 22:30:32
I don't understand this concept of seniority amongst our centre backs? We complain that Lovren and Klavan aren't good enough and yet Joe Gomez isn't classed as a senior because he hasn't had a run of games? Well which is preferable, someone you don't rate or someone you haven't yet?

6.) 01 Sep 2017 22:54:24
It's obvious that klopp had his shopping list and he didn't want to settle for 2nd best.

I'm obviously abit concerned about us not getting a CB as we aren't going to be able to out score every team every game.

On the other hand though we haven't wasted money on a panic buy which is going to haunt us for years too come.

You look at the squad now and apart from a GK and CB back we are looking class.

7.) 01 Sep 2017 22:59:37
It was similar last January when Klopp said, if the right player became available we would move for him. Not the next best, only the right player.

I think its good we have a manager who is strong enough to tell the clubs bosses and the transfer committee the players he wants.

Its probably where Rodgers was lacking a bit and let players he didn't want pushed on him by the money men.

We can see We are on the right track when TOP players are refusing Arsenal, City and Chelsea to sign for us or wait where they are until they can join us.

Im old enough to remember the good times under Paisley, Fagan and Dalglish and also the steady decline that ended with Hicks and Gillette nearly bankrupting the club.

This is the first time in many years that I feel we are the up and coming team, but it won't be all this year butits refreshing to know that Top players are waiting to come.

The owners are not a Cuuntry like qatar backing PSG or the Arabs at City and will not risk the clubs future in the transfer market but even the most negative fan has to see the new stand and all round mprovements everywhere.

8.) 01 Sep 2017 23:10:36
If Klopp is happy to be patient and stick with what he has then I'm happy with that. Just wish we hadn't marred the vvd situation from the off. The world can see we're a club on the up so let's be positive and confident ;)

9.) 02 Sep 2017 00:22:29
LOL. We've even on the TAP UP.

10.) 02 Sep 2017 01:53:08
Thing is we need two CBs. I would have taken a decent 2nd choice for now then Vvd jan. If Matip lovren injured. Gomez klavan. Wow. there's a lot of games till jan and No guareentee VVD will still be adament on lfc move if SHFC say no to us. Then he will move chelsea in jan. Qulaity CB not cup tied in jan will be hard to find.

11.) 02 Sep 2017 02:05:24
I'm with you Lfcder. What excited me the most is the fact that Ox turned down the champions to join Liverpool. Keita willing to wait for a year to join, and Lemar snubbed Arsenal when at the same time Liverpool showed interest (he preferred Liverpool, right? ) . That is a really good sign. I don't like during the Rodgers era when he didn't manage to get his main targets, we ended up with whoever that were available, spend for the sake of spending, and it brought us nowhere.

The only thing dissappoints me is we couldn't get the replacement for Coutinho. Maybe I'm among the minority here (or maybe I am the only one), I read posts in Arsenal forum about Sanchez and couldn't help but to agree, what's the point of keeping a player that wants out. We might ended up better without him.

12.) 02 Sep 2017 08:07:57
LFcder, no players were pushed on BR any money men (whoever these people are) . BR was in charge of the committee and had the final say on who we get and don't get. If BR lacked the bottle to put his foot down then that is his problem and not that of anyone else's. Klopp is in charge of the committee as well with consultation from Buvac (who recommended Grujic) and Kraveitz. He is stubborn and sure of himself, things BR severely lacked which is why he is respected and BR never was. This notion that BR was overruled by the money men or by the TC (which he heads) has been debunked since 2015 by Ed02 so people need to stop pushing this myth as none of it is true.

13.) 02 Sep 2017 19:32:02
Thats exactly what I said.

Its probably where Rodgers went wrong.
There was at the time within FSG the 'moneyball' philosophy. Where the club would invest in players that would develop and to move on at a profit, if the club chose,
Origi, Coutinio, Ballotelli, Borinii, Aspas, Gomes lliori, and many more.

How many of them have had a positive affect on the first team.

Not many. and that's What I meant by money men having control as opposed to football men, as is the case now,
thankfully.

LFC should never have given Rodgers the job, they did so because he had history and Knowledge of youth set ups all round Europe from his time with Chelsea.

We have a strong manager now who knows what he wants snd will go get it if available,
if its not available he won't compromise but will work with what he has already as they are familiar with his requirements.

14.) 03 Sep 2017 07:54:14
I don't get this whole " no centre backs are/ were not available"

The recent issues at the back has been going on since BR's teunure. Klopp would have done his homework on this before he arrived but has still not fully addressed the issue since he arrived in Oct 2015.

Someone said previously klopp won't take second best and is happy to wait, well that's another load of rubbish too. He bought Klavan whom is no where near second best! What about Caulker? ill advised maybe but he should have known better and "waited"

If we can't get a decent CB then we need a new defensive coach to at least try anx work with what we have.

{Ed001's Note - Klavan is a back up, you can't get the best as a back up and he was deliberately chosen because he is strong and good in the air plus able to cover left back. There were no top class centre backs available, you might not get it, but it is true. If there were, do you think there would have been so many teams, including Man City and Arsenal, interested in Jonny Evans? Good as he is, he is a long way from a world class defender.}

15.) 03 Sep 2017 08:32:40
Thanks for the reply ED001.

If you read my post, I quote that klopp has been here since Oct 2015, he would have surely done his homework on the shambolic defence he took over from BR.

I read all your comments Ed"01 and have a hell of a lot of respect wkth what you day but I totally disagree with you regarding Klavan. If you're saying to me that Klavan has been the best available since Oct 2015 then sorry I don't buy that, back up or not

Watford away, I was at that game Ed 1 and Lovren was bullied all afternoon in the air, he couldn't cope. Why not bring on Klavan to deal with their powerful attackers?

We conceded 12 goals from set pieces alone last season. Klopp has had enough time to address this issue.

I'm not alone on this, just about every person I speak to can see the problems we have, why can't the scouting or the defensive coaches?

{Ed001's Note - the scouts and the coaches do see it and are working on it. It is not as easy as clicking your fingers. As for what you are saying about Klavan, you can moan about him all you like, but how many other centre backs could cover left back at the time we bought him that were available to us? Since Oct 15, is irrelevant, we had Sakho before, so we were looking to upgrade on him, Matip was brought in for the right side to upgrade on Lovren. It should be Matip/Sakho as the first choice pairing, with Gomez/Klavan as the back ups.

As for Watford, it was the first game of the season, move on, it takes a while for teams to get going. 7 clean sheets in the last 9 Premier League games suggests there is improvement there defensively. Much better to take a longer view as one off games can be an aberration, such as the Watford one.}

16.) 03 Sep 2017 09:30:36
It's not just about clicking ones ED1, the coaches and scouts have had plenty of time since Klppps arrival to sort out the defence. We conceded 42 PL goals last season, most out of all the top 4. So have the other teams that conceded less not strengthen their defence because there was no one available?

Sakho was banned from March 2016 so the writing on the wall was from then and yes 2015 was relevant because we're no better than BR's defensive unit.

I'm not interested in having a poor defender in Klavan, that can cover LB and CB because it hasn't worked has it?

Did you watch the last game of the season against Boro? One of those last seven you mentioned. Thier attackers got goal side of Lovren at least 3 times, luckily woefull finishing meant we are in the CL places.

Did you also see how Hoffenheim calved us open time after time?

As much as it pains me, you watch how well United do this season with a solid defence.

{Ed001's Note - I watch every game, I also watch hundreds of other games a day and you are quite clearly of the opinion we are worse than everyone else and that no one else's defenders get caught out. Which suggests you need to watch more of other teams because it happens all the bloody time in the Prem, the defending is utter crap in 90% of games. The ones that do best defensively are Spurs, yet Vertonghen regularly gets caught out, it is just that they have a lot more protection from the midfield. They also have a keeper behind them that makes saves, rather than Mignolet. There is a lot more to it than just the defenders.

To be honest this conversation bores me because it is always the same hysterical bull with no balance. Whining on and on about Klavan is not going to change anything. Especially as your whines are so pathetic and just you calling him names. You never explain anything, just whinge. You don't explain why they were goalside of Lovren. Was he ballwatching? Was he trying to hold a line and they got caught out? Was it good play from the forward? Or do you not actually know and just want something to whine about?

As for Hoffenheim, we got carved open because both managers took a chance and gambled on being able to outscore the other. They were throwing extra bodies forward and Klopp was brave and kept his players high to catch them out on the break, believing we were better than them and so could outscore them with the gaps they were leaving. I think we can safely say he was right and it was a very enjoyable game because of that. Ok he could have kept you happy by doing a Jose and sitting all ten outfield players behind the ball and gone for a 0-0, but who wants to watch that?}

17.) 03 Sep 2017 10:38:48
So why are you ignoring the fact we conceded 42 goals last season? This has nothing to do with other teams, all I said was that we conceded more goals than other of the top 4 teams, that's the reality Ed1. Chelsea conceded 33 goals and won the league! So again Ed 1, why haven't we addressed the keeper situation or are you gong to say there were none available?

Whines? Actually Ed 1 if you care to look back on here regarding the Boro game you'll see I explained what happened with Lovren, after I returned from the match.
What names? Just because I call him a poor defender? Shall I send some cotton wool in the post? I didn't realise we were discussing each game in depth right now?

What a different conversation we'd be having had Hoffenhime been more clinical? Scored the penalty from Lovren's mistake?

What did Jose win in his first season playing boring football ? Two trophies and a route into Europe . We played lovely football going forward and what did we win? Who will be remembered?

You want to talk about Whining Ed 1? Come and sit with me on the Kop, listen to the radio Merseyside phone phone in in the way home. Bring your pacemaker, you'll have heart failure.

{Ed001's Note - I can't be arsed, you have nothing of interest to say, nothing new, no insight, you can't even understand anyone else's point just shout about the same old things. Carry on whining it is obviously the only thing that makes you happy is unconstructive criticism.}

18.) 03 Sep 2017 11:01:27
Me neither Ed 1.

I see far more watching the back 4 when it's live.

This conversation is to do with our failure to sign a decent centre half durng his appointment at LFC.

{Ed001's Note - it really depends, if you had access to the scouting sites, you would see even more. You can watch it over and over again from multiple angles. It makes a huge difference.

The conversation is just pointless, no one signed a top class centre half other than one going to Milan. There are very few of them available and each one had 10s of suitors after them if they did. It says a lot that so many were after VVD and Jonny Evans, neither of which are top class. There just aren't many around which is why teams are taking chances on players like Bailly and Lindelof in the hope of getting lucky and they work out. We already have one player in that mould in Gomez, that is intended to be gradually fed in, so we couldn't go and get another without blocking his route. It is a long term view Klopp is taking, it is how he works. There is none of this buying a quick fix, he always wants to look at building for the future.

We have 2 decent centre halves, we don't need a decent centre half now, we need a better centre half and that is the issue, they are all just decent or unavailable. No point buying to stand still with players that are only of equal quality. Better to develop Gomez, who is expected to be far better than decent.}

19.) 03 Sep 2017 15:04:22
Interestingly enough, I think Bailey and Keane ( now at Everton ) are better than both Klavan and Lovren. I only see our CB's live and the errors they make, so full judgment based on seeing the other two live only twice a season is difficult.

I will agree with you regarding Gomez, he looked very composed before he got injured and also the appearances he's made this season. He's not rash on the ball and will try and bring the ball down, chested or otherwise, and puck a pass, as apposed to just heading the ball back to the opposition or no mans land when it comes to him.

Again I agree we need better but we've needed better form when klopp started. For me, Matip is the only one I'd keep out of the three. Conceding 12 goals last season from set pieces is not good enough. Now is that zonal marking? For me it's a mixture of Zonal marking and individual errors.

We are never going to win anything unless we dramatically improve at the back, be it be new personal or better coaching. This has been proven since the BR days and has filtered through to klopps reign. We have won nothing.

I'm fully behind building for the future but as it stands, under klopp, we have improved our strengths but not our weaknesses.

20.) 03 Sep 2017 18:45:19
I think Klopp has improved on Skrtel with Matip and improved on an old Toure with a younger Klavan who is nowhere near as bad as some would have you believe. If he was Russian/ German/ French/ Spanish/ Argentinan nobody would moan as much about him.
So that's 2 he's improved on in less than 2 full years, have some patience man this isn't a video game.

21.) 03 Sep 2017 21:19:45
Seriously Kev 1, are you for real?

22.) 03 Sep 2017 21:55:51
Don't believe the hype and stop looking for arguments Nicholas.

23.) 04 Sep 2017 10:14:43
I personally don't rate Keane as a centre back, he is awkward on the ball and doesn't really have a lot of pace.

Given that we missed out on VVD, I would like to see Gomes getting games above Klavan and if he does well, then the first choice partnership should be Gomes and Matip.

Gomes has a lot to offer, he is very quick, good in the air, physically imposing, confident with the ball at his feet and he appears to be defensively very sound (there are many better judges than us who rate him very very highly) . The only question mark is experience and if he has recovered fully from injury, which you can only answer the experience question with playing games and sticking by him and the injury issue can only be answered by the medical staff and playing time.

24.) 05 Sep 2017 02:30:32
It's so refreshing to read that reply from Ed001 about the defender situation! Our centre backs actually do quite well compared to the rest of the league, but there's more to defence than the centre backs. Not to mention, the set pieces are almost exclusively conceded because of individual errors from the midfielders or strikers not doing their role.

Also our playing style means we need to be disciplined in midfield and most of the time we get caught out is because a mistake there exposed us. Any game plan that involves constantly putting our centre halves in one on one situations, especially against quick players, is always going to be a roll of the dice. I'd go as far to say that Lovren is one of the best in the league for those situations. In a normal backline it's risky defending but when you're exposed so often it's necessary. The amount of times he's had to make a block or interception to prevent an almost certain goal is way too high, and 95% of the time it's not his doing that puts him in that situation.

Defending for Liverpool is harder than for just about any other team so there's no point bringing in a defender who does well in an easier setup. If it's not a clear upgrade, we're wasting our time. We've done well this window, and on top of that we've made a statement. Now we just need to perform on the pitch and by next season can genuinely be seen as an elite European club again.

I hate asking, but ESPN are reporting Liverpool have accepted a bid front Barcelona for Coutinho. Any truth to this?

Yankee Red

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any agreement at this point in time.}

1.) 08 Aug 2017 18:05:11
How many times had we signed Keita and VVD according to ESPN and Yahoo etc.

I'd take it with a pinch of salt until anything is confirmed by the club.

2.) 08 Aug 2017 18:59:35
Agreed. That's why I came and asked here. Not trying to brown nose, but I trust the editors here more than anyone in the press.

3.) 08 Aug 2017 19:36:45
None of it is true. Sky Sports have said that Barcelona officials never met with LFC officials and LFC's stance is unchanged. Guillem Balaghe via twitter, also said that LFC's stance has not changed and we met with no one. They however, did go to Germany to thrash out a deal for Dembele, per Bild. We are still holding firm for the time being.

4.) 08 Aug 2017 20:48:33
Do fsg not have a stake in espn. Not sure if I remember correctly. If so worrying.

Eds,

What precisely is going on with the FA inquiry? I know it was said that last Monday an announcement would be made. Have they dropped the case?

Thanks.

{Ed001's Note - as far as I am aware, they haven't yet decided whether to pursue a case against us or not. Monday was expected to be the decision, but this is the FA and they don't necessarily move quickly.}

I hope everyone was paying attention today when Karius was ironically cheered. That kind of support is appalling. Get behind the lad or find a new club.

Yankee Red

1.) 14 Jul 2018 16:09:09
Where playing away. There bury fans 🤣 they don't care about karius.

Be good preparation for the 70k who do it at old Trafford or the 60k at city, 60k at Tottenham or every single premier league club that will hound him for the next season.

The liverpool fans give him a round of applause when he gets to his goal.

Get off your high horse dude :)

2.) 14 Jul 2018 16:33:30
Oh here we go again with the outrage on how our players are treated.

3.) 14 Jul 2018 16:45:35
You’re missing the point. Just look on the LFC post that announced the starting lineup. Most of the replies are trashing him. And if supporting players rather than trashing them puts me on a high horse, than I don’t even want to know how pathetic your life must be.

4.) 14 Jul 2018 17:10:27
Yankee, it was the home fans ironically cheering. You can't police other teams fans. I completely agree we should get behind our own players when they are playing for the team and negative comments made by our own fans before a game when the team is announced is not on, but every game he plays in this season he is going to get negative reactions from other teams fans. He is going to have to deal with that at it will happen.

5.) 14 Jul 2018 17:13:46
It's blind support the lad simply is not any good. Accepting mediocrity is why we have not won a league title in almost 30 years.

6.) 14 Jul 2018 17:15:52
I take your point, I do think Klopp has a blind spot for Karius.

7.) 14 Jul 2018 17:18:53
Exactly redmick.

We can support all we like, doesn't make someone good.

He had all the support in the world and gave the champions league to Madrid as a result.

He's going to Get absolutely destroyed by every single away fan and god forbid if we pull Madrid at any point in the champions league, even if he's had a blinder of a season it will all rear it's head. If he isn't prepared for it then request a move, otherwise get ready for a lot of pressure.

8.) 14 Jul 2018 17:22:07
But there’s no need to abuse the lad REDMICK, that’s unacceptable.

9.) 14 Jul 2018 17:23:16
You are bang on Yankee but seriously mate, just leave it. It's not worth it. We'll all just keep going around in circles.

Karius is going to have to rise above it, so we all might as well do that too.

10.) 14 Jul 2018 17:33:54
Just got back from the game and I can assure you Karius was clapped from all the Liverpool fans (a 3rd of the stadium)
And the one stand of bury fans took the piss out of him. But what do you expect after being awful of late, at Old Trafford Ect he will be under massive pressure all game from the crowd n players. I think we'll need a better Keeper in this window if we want success.

11.) 14 Jul 2018 18:04:33
Well if we all hate Loris so much we better sack Klopp then, as Ed02 has said. What’s that? It’s not up to us? The manager and club might know better than us? Oh. Well that’s a shame. Spose we best just support our team and players then eh? I am a fan after all. Silly me.

12.) 14 Jul 2018 18:08:01
I'm with you Yankee mate but as MK says we're going round in circles. We can discuss it until we're blue in the face, unfortunately this changes nothing.

13.) 14 Jul 2018 18:14:00
He’s one of OUR players!

Yes an upgrade should be signed but why on earth would anyone abuse him?
Makes no sense to me!

No player should be certain of their place; if Maradona of Shearer could be bought I’d bench Salah and Firmino too!

No player should ever walk alone especially while still with and playing for us!

YNWA.

14.) 14 Jul 2018 18:45:15
Yankee, it was the Bury fans doing the cheeky jeers at Karius, not the LFC fans cos the applauded him when he got to his goal. We were playing away from home so what did you expect? Flowers and chocolates for Karius from the Bury fans? This is the hand he would have been dealt should he be no. 1 and as MK said, we will all have to rise above it esp. him and move on cos it ain't going to get any easier when the season begins.

As for the SM fans trashing Karius, there is a good reason why Klopp tells his players to get off SM and look at the wonders that has done for a guy like Lovren. As fans the best way we can help Karius (or any other player in a bad patch), is to drown the boos with hearty cheers to let the player know he is NOT walking alone. That would be my suggestion.

15.) 14 Jul 2018 18:50:56
It sounds like he was getting support from our fans at the ground. How someone reacts on social media is a different matter, no-one knows if the negative comments are from Liverpool fans or not, anyone can claim to support anyone. People create fake accounts.

As long as he’s getting a fair response from fans at the match that’s all we can hope for.

I don’t know why people moan about the starting line-up in friendlies, friendlies are for building match fitness and understandings. If he makes a bad error then criticise, but don’t criticise the line-up for friendlies - pure madness 🤪.

16.) 14 Jul 2018 19:11:18
Social media brings out the worst in people. It gives them an alternate identity they can hide behind, they then believe they can say whatever they like without consequences. Freedom of speech is great, however many people don't stop and think of the effects this has on the subject of their vitriol. I bet most of the people voicing this abuse wouldn't say the same comments to his face and that's the way it should be on SM.

17.) 14 Jul 2018 20:13:36
Who cares what people say on here or what opposition fans do at matches? What is important is that our players feel supported by our fans at matches. It's simple really. None of them are likely to be reading this or any other site and only foolish players and those that don't actually care what folks say to them online would have anything to do with twitter et al. I bet Bobby and Salah etc regularly get pelters, even it it is from opposition fans or whoever, but it's unlikely to be publicised because they don't have a negative focus on them.

Thumbs down me all the folks who can't see the wood for the trees, but Karius will get a tirade of god knows what wherever he goes, but you can better your bottom dollar, if he's on the team sheet come the first match of the season, he'll get cheered like the rest of the players by our fans. If he pays attention to the internet, knowing full well how fickle and harsh it is, more fool him.

18.) 14 Jul 2018 20:43:58
One thing I'v learned about reading on here is that both the praise and the slating is usually over the top. Way over the top. So I read it with a smile. In one ear and out the other. Like everyone else, I too have my liked and disliked players on the team, but I scream and shout for the team to kick ass and do well, during every single game. And at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

19.) 14 Jul 2018 20:57:28
ArAy Your first sentence sums it up for me.

20.) 14 Jul 2018 22:06:09
Sorry Yankee, I can't just pick and choose a new club. I've been a Liverpool fan since I was 6, since I first really kicked a ball. 31 years a Liverpool fan and supporter.

"Find a new club" impossible. It would be like dating a brunette when I'm seriously, deeply, madly in love with a blonde. I like celtic.

21.) 14 Jul 2018 22:29:29
If karius is number 1 come the start of the season then we find out once and for all what he is truely made of.

If i was in his shoes id be coming off every training session hardly able to stand. First one there and last one to leave.

That mansion mtv style video he put up should have been a 5 minute comp video of him busting his ass taking shots for hours on end. Goalkeeper drill training until he threw up.

Favourably edited or not it would have been at least the first step to bridging the gap.

If he doesn't approach this season with a major chip on his shoulder then he just ain't going to cut it.

He has a chance to use what has happened to him in the final and after to make him the the best keeper he can possibly be.

Away fans will murder him this season but above all positions the goal keeper position has no room for snowflakes.

The abuse he has taken from his own fans is unacceptable but its part and parcel in todays football world unfortunately.

Liverpool fans will quickly forgive him if they see effort and improvement in his game. Most true fans don't even see that there is anything to forgive. He simply had a bad game. Goalkeepers don't often get away with having bad games because it usually ends in defeat.

The debate most fans are having or have been having is whether or not they see him ever becoming a top level keeper. That debate was going on way before the final.

If a new big money number 1 keeper is signed karius should knocking on klopps door and requesting a loan move to a team where he is going to see plenty of action.

If he stays as a number 2 he is done for in terms of him ever hoping to be a top level keeper.

And if that aspiration isn't even in his thinking well shame on him.

If it is then i wish him the best of luck in the hopes of achieving his goals.

22.) 14 Jul 2018 22:48:38
Fair post that Wolverine. Nice one mate.

Saw that LFC were in for Kluivert. Any truth to this? Last I read, there was interest from other sides, but not Liverpool.

Yankee Red

{Ed002's Note - I thought DEmbele was the Salah replacement and it is a "done deal" according to what everyone here has been telling me.}

1.) 04 Jun 2018 08:37:48
No Ed, we're signing the fourth most expensive player in history as backup. Sure, why not?

24 Apr 2018 14:07:00
Ed002,

Was just wondering, where exactly does Liverpool stand in terms of players wanting to join the club? It seems like players feel there is a level beyond Liverpool (Coutinho, Suarez to Barca; Emre wanting Bayern or Juve; Salah possibly wanting Real) . Having made the semifinals of the CL and showing progress in the league, how long until LFC stop losing their best players to "bigger" clubs? Are their steps they can take to get further? I remember you recently posting 6 bullet points on what the club could do to improve, but will players ever want to stick around if that happens? Basically, what is LFC's reputation amongst Europe's elite players?

Thank you and the other Ed's for everything y'all do!

Yankee Red

{Ed002's Note - Players will always want to play at the highest level and challenge for league titles and the Champions League etc.. Players will also want to play at the "elite" clubs, hence Salah having his agent approach Real Madrid before Christmas and more recently Barcelona. Coutinho did the same, the runt fought hard to leave etc.. It is a problem other sides have with the likes of De Gea, Hazard, Kane, Courtois, Alderweireld, Kante, Alonso, de Bruyne and others all courting or being courted by the likes of Real Madrid, PSG and Barcelona. Liverpool have a great opportunity to win the Champions League this season but that won't stop the likes of Can leaving and Salah looking to leave.}

1.) 24 Apr 2018 15:02:51
Thank you for your response. It’s hard for me to understand why players want to leave, but I suppose I could’ve chosen a different club to support as a kid if I wanted all the elite players.

2.) 24 Apr 2018 15:15:32
Top tier is probably Real, Barca, Bayern and maybe PSG. Next tier, is City (wants to be top tier), Utd, Chelsea, Juve and Athletico. We're probably in the next tier with Dortmund, Arsenal, Spurs and Napoli.

3.) 24 Apr 2018 15:21:38
Coutinho is having a shocker tbh. I wouldn't worry about Salah leaving just yet mate.

4.) 24 Apr 2018 16:08:10
Lets be honest, this is our first CL semi-final in 10yrs, and let’s not talk about the PL.

While can argue about the tough competition in PL, and how well we’re playing now, it still takes a fair amount to stay if Real or Barcelona come calling, as those two pretty much guarantee titles to those who are tapped on the shoulder to join.

I truly believe we’re building something special, and right now everyone fears us as a genuine threat, but we’re some way off of being able to offer the same near guaranteed medal haul.

5.) 24 Apr 2018 16:11:06
The problem for Salah, I think, is that he's found his level at Liverpool.
And seeing how Coutinho, Suarez and to a lesser extent Emre Can had to damage their reputations with LFC fans to leave, I'm not sure if Salah would go that far to damage his image.

6.) 24 Apr 2018 16:23:00
Can is not an elite player. He is leaving because he will not be first choice at Liverpool next season.

Salah on the other hand is a big worry - no way we could replace 40 goals with one player.

7.) 24 Apr 2018 16:37:39
It hurts to see Salah aproached Barcelona agent recently. Seems like he doesn't see his long term future here. : ( Anyway I feel like if Salah leaves he will never be the same, Klopp way and the teammates suits him so much that I belive he will never achive such numbers somewhere else, but who knows.

8.) 24 Apr 2018 16:53:52
Salah has a long term contract and I can’t imagine Klopp it the board or anyone around the club will let other clubs even consider approaching him.

{Ed002's Note - It is not other clubs approaching him but him approaching other clubs.}

9.) 24 Apr 2018 16:54:03
Thanks Ed02. Good to know that we are not the only ones having this issue cos the way some of our fans run their mouths, you would think LFC are the only clubs where their players get cherry-picked by the elite clubs. Salah may well leave at some point, but I doubt any of those clubs can afford what we would want for him esp. right now cos it is safe to say that the Cou fee will be dwarfed as that won't even get you to the table, IMO.

10.) 24 Apr 2018 16:57:47
Who cares about tiers and elite clubs? We have a chance to add to our FIVE European cups. "Elite" clubs like PSG clubs would love to have one as would City. Chelsea and United would love to add to their total.

If winning another European Cup doesn't encourage you to come to Liverpool or stay if you are already there then you are purely after money.

11.) 24 Apr 2018 17:15:00
If Mo Salah wins us the champions league he can leave with my best wishes for all I care.

12.) 24 Apr 2018 17:23:39
a world record fee won't be enough this summer! He can approach whoever he wants! He ain't going anywhere yet.

13.) 24 Apr 2018 17:53:31
I think LFC will hold on to Salah this summer by asking for 200 Million and insisting on it (which we know FSG know how to do) . But by next summer, there will have been enough acrimony and disturbance with "gentleman" Salah (as there was with the other "gentleman, Coutinho), that FSG will let him go at a high price anyway. As they say. When you want to go, you have to go.

14.) 24 Apr 2018 18:02:48
Ed doing the dirty with his bubble bursting of Liverpool fans. Salah ain't going nowhere. Simples. Not for at least 250mil starting bid. 4 year contract on the pfa player of the year and probably 3rd or even runner up in the balon d'ore.

And the club has shown yet again that we are much better equipped in the transfer market and that where not reliant on someone leaving.

For every coutinho there is a salah.

15.) 24 Apr 2018 22:06:31
200 million? for the player he is i hope you mean for his right foot! Because that would be a joke. Twice the player neymar is!

16.) 25 Apr 2018 09:31:02
Think Salah won't go anywhere next year because don't think anybody can afford him atm.
It may be short sighted and he needs to do it over a far longer time period but right now at this very moment he is doing everything Messi does. He's up there. only his career is only starting.

14 Mar 2018 13:00:43
Chris Bascombe of the Telegraph reporting that Brewster set to train with first team when he return. Is this guy reliable? Seems odd to promise that to someone who has yet to do so and will be returning from injury. Perhaps Bascombe frequents this site and is responding to Ed002s statement Brewster wants Dortmund as he can break through easier there?

Yankee Red

{Ed002's Note - I don’t recall saying anything of the sort. I told you Dortmund has an interest but I have no idea what the kid wants.}

1.) 14 Mar 2018 14:03:17

3.) 14 Mar 2018 13:19:57

I agree with everything you said. But at the same time I'm just not sold on Robinson yet. He looked brilliant in his one match for us so far. But that was one match. Against Crystal Palace. And he would've been one of two at fault had Benteke finished an absolute sitter from Zaha.
