Chilwell hasn't signed, deal off. Move back on the cards?

Max Renn

1.) 23 Jul 2016 17:13:57
Chilwell playing againsr Celtic today.

2.) 23 Jul 2016 18:15:59
Will be watching that game.

3.) 23 Jul 2016 21:30:24
Dont know much about the lad, but Ed seems somehow hopefull for the boy, so I guess he got potential! Would hate for some other big club to wrap him up now.

4.) 24 Jul 2016 02:20:41
Average player it seems.

15 Jul 2016 12:32:15
Any truth re Lucas on loan to Galatasary for the whole season?

Surely this would be an awful deal, as we need him around and a loan rather then sale makes no sense at all.

Max Renn

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any agreement but there has been interest from Besiktas who wanted to buy Lucas. For me a loan would not be a good idea either.}

28 Jun 2016 17:35:16
Hi Eds. Are you expecting to see first team players like Skrtel to leave now that we've splashed some cash?
I know we have been looking for a group that we all know of to be sold, but as we are announcing players joining should be also be hearing of departures as well.

Max Renn

{Ed001's Note - yes.}

1.) 28 Jun 2016 18:10:47
Haha, cheers Ed. maybe I should have phrased that differently. When would you expect to hear?

We always ask about how close to incomings, but outgoings? Any news of accepted bids, medical lined up elsewhere?

{Ed001's Note - things will start to move now as teams are out of the Euros. I expect Skrtel to move on first.}

2.) 29 Jun 2016 03:32:18
Kinda surprised with how many teams seem to want Skrtel. Inter, Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Gala.
Hopefully we get more than 5 million for him. We seem to be paying over the top for players, now its time to start selling our players at prices more than they are worth for a change.

3.) 29 Jun 2016 07:12:43
Read £5.5m. If that's true we must have a grad in for the summer in sales or a new negotiations rep handling this one, either way well done that man.

Couple more like this and we should move him to recruitment.

4.) 29 Jun 2016 10:30:14
Plus he's off the wage bill, Ed am I right saying he is a higher earner at the club?

{Ed001's Note - you are right, he is very well paid.}

5.) 29 Jun 2016 11:33:13
Thanks ed.

6.) 29 Jun 2016 12:01:43
Question for the Eds, what difference are Wales/ Allen doing well going to make to his position here and do you expect it to make clubs more willing to pay the price we want for him?

{Ed002's Note - It certainly won't do any harm.}

31 May 2016 07:15:02
Any truth that the transfer of Sinclair to Watford, which is going to be settled via tribunal as a fee couldn't be agreed, is now the reason Zielinski deal is dead?

Pozzo family not happy and won't deal with LFC.

Max Renn

{Ed002's Note - Udinese are pissed off because Klopp illegally tapped up one of their players and with his head turned, Liverpool should have done the right thing and bought him at the asking price. But no, they wished to argue about the price. That is the issue with Zielinski. As for Sinclair, it may have smoothed the situation a little if Liverpool had taken a sensible approach - but they are not a club to show respect to other clubs or players leaving - we know that from their happily screwing up things for Spearing last season.}

1.) 31 May 2016 09:47:25
Thanks Ed. with talk of a possible sale of the club, we in general like FSG as owners. Maybe compared to previous ones or just with how we see the club b progressing.
However, as a man in the know, would you see FSG leaving a good thing in the way of how they conduct themselves in amongst the football world? Can't say what the next ones will be like of course, but these guys seem to tarnish the club with their way with other clubs.
Just your opinion, not looking to draw you into a slagfest against fsg or anything.

{Ed002's Note - Actually, very large numbers of people from this site have done little more than turn against FSG since they would not sign multiple "marquee" players every summer - and regardless of their repeated efforts to buy the league. They have been good owners who have stabalized the club. I have explained internally that there are investors in FSG who see the club as a money pit and see the influx of new money from TV as a boost to the value and a time to cut and run.}

26 May 2016 07:14:46
Eds is it expected Coutinho will put in a transfer request due to no European football?

Max Renn

{Ed001's Note - possibly, he has already spoken to the club about his desire to go because of it. Just have to see if talks between the club and himself can change his mind or not. I am hopeful he will see sense, he is still young enough to give it one more year at least.}

1.) 26 May 2016 08:01:53
No doubt I'll get loads of disagrees but I'd be happy to let him go for the right price. He's just a little tok inconsistent for me and we aren't too badly off with Firmino in there instead.

2.) 26 May 2016 08:29:17
Coutinho leaving would be hands down a disaster - yet more evidence that we can't keep hold of our high profile players (for anyone keeping score, that would make our biggest player 3 years in a row leaving) . It's imperative that we keep him no matter what.

As for inconsistent. really? 23 year old flair attacking player in the premier league and he doesn't produce the goods every single game? Shocking.

3.) 26 May 2016 08:33:09
Didn't one of the Eds say we want more than we got for Sterling for him? If we hold out for that either he'll be staying or we'll have ripped someone off! I love Pip and hope he stays but he's not worth more than £50mil that's just crazy!

4.) 26 May 2016 08:41:33
Hjikle I agree with you mate. As a club how are we meant to move forward if we sell our best player's?

5.) 26 May 2016 08:33:45
Thanks Ed. I'd understand IF he were to leave for a club in the category of Madrid (either), Barca, Juve etc as these teams play regular CL AND have a chance to win it. I never understand it when a player leaves, or chooses, a club which is in the CL but it's a good chance it's a one off season or they're unlikely to get beyond the groups. That never makes sense to me.

Would you expect, if he does go, it to affect the team much, as we have Firmino already there? Or would it be more harmful to attract players as again our best player leaves?

{Ed001's Note - it is always a harmful thing to sell your better players as they are improving. We have been doing it for years now, it is never good if you want to win trophies.}

6.) 26 May 2016 09:25:44
Best thing for coutinho would be to star here, leaving for say Barcelona will harm his development.

7.) 26 May 2016 10:00:58
For me, I would let him go for the right offer. I love him and he's shown the world he has some incredible ability occasionally. And that's the thing - He has the odd flash for us but he does seem to disappear in games - more noticeably when we aren't dominating the possession. I think he struggles to get a hold of the game when he has to press for the team. It takes the edge off his sudden burst / turn of pace when he does get a hold of the ball in the attacking half (you see him more and more make an errand pass or get shoved off the ball when this is the case. ) If he stays, he's young and he can adapt because he sure has the ability.

8.) 26 May 2016 09:54:05
Let him go if he wants because he has done nothing to help us win the final and clinch the champions league spot. He was clueless in the final.

9.) 26 May 2016 10:30:02
I'd agree that Coutinho leaving would be a disaster, but I also see the point that many on here have about not caring too much if he left, provided we got a good sum for him. The man wants European football, and when he got his chance to help the team get it, he didn't show up. Pretty much sums up his career at LFC. Highly skilled and creative, put in sufficient effort, scored and won many a game for us, but there was always that little something that was lacking and stopped him from being a true great. If we get the money for him, then I wouldn't mind going for Coric or Halilovic (Barcelona), or maybe even both, and see who comes out on top.

In terms of always having to sell our best players, I'll just point out what was said here on these pages, when FSG first bought the club. It was mentioned that FSG wanted to focus on a strategy of buying young players, develop them and then sell on for a hefty profit. And win titles and trophies at the same time. Subsequently, the Eds mentioned that such a policy was no longer in place. But I have a sneaking suspicion that this mindset by the management is still there. I could be wrong. But I agree that selling on your best players every summer is not the answer for any continuity. And lack of continuity will not win titles and trophies. It just perpetuates that dreaded word - "transition".

{Ed001's Note - he is 23, what is lacking is experience. We should do what we can to hold on to him and help him grow with us.}

10.) 26 May 2016 13:20:52
Fully agree Ed001.

24 Apr 2017 09:31:53
Didn't Palace beat Chelsea the other week? Think we're going overboard again.

We will finish top four. Support.

Max Renn

1.) 24 Apr 2017 09:39:20
Hope so but we need Lallana and Sturridge back asap . Now we need other teams to drop points.

2.) 24 Apr 2017 09:50:05
Sturridge severely missed yesterday. It was his game. His movement and the only striker I genuinely believe who has that magic to score out from nothing. A fit Sturridge would easily open up any tight defense. Origi is no way in his class.
What would Lallana do when there is no space for him to do usual turn and move?

3.) 24 Apr 2017 10:15:30
Harry he's good in tight spaces that opens up the game. And he can get on the half turn.

4.) 24 Apr 2017 10:31:10
But harry he is not fit is he? Or are you going to blame klopp for that too?

5.) 24 Apr 2017 10:33:40
I have seen him struggle against teams who sit back and defend. He lacks pace and directness something that will help you to skip past players ( Mane ) . We had Coutinho all day to open up and he tried his best.

There was absolutely no movement up and also on the side and Lallana is a lower grade of Coutinho. There was no need to press as well coz we dominated the possession. We lacked width and pace on the flanks and unfortunately that's not Lallana's cup of tea.

I would have thrown in Harry Wilson on the left and I don't know who could play on the right but Firmino is not a RW either. We never stretched their backline coz we play so narrow and Lallana is no help in such situation.
It is an area the manager has failed to address by not adding players in Jan / not trusting the academy.

6.) 24 Apr 2017 11:16:25
Harry you're missing the point a bit - Llalana in the side and Can would have been sitting deep and directing play from the back while Llalana would have been all over the pitch and in the box on a regular basis.

He's clearly no Mane (who's pace is invaluable to unlocking stubborn defenses), but a Can/ Llalana/ Gini midfield is far more attacking and creative than Lucas/ Can/ Gini.

7.) 24 Apr 2017 11:50:20
Sorry but Lallana would not of made the slightest bit of difference yetserday. He isn't good enough to open up defences, he needs Mane to take defenders out of the game to give Lallana space to run into otherwise he just becomes another one of the pass it sideways brigade, the only difference is Lallana will add in a Cruyff turn before passing or losing possession.

8.) 24 Apr 2017 11:50:32
I respect your view Zimbo but for a team that had nearly 70% of the ball wouldn't miss an ACM at the very least. He wouldn't have made any difference as he too need space to make a half circle or even a full turn which there wasn't any. It's a myth that Lallana opens up defense which simply does not. Take out the hard core running from him and he is bang average which he was until 6 months ago. Coutinho is enough to pull any strings from the midfield. You just don't need Lallana.
I mean people shouting at clyne for not providing any width are asking for Lallana is a contradiction. Lallana would never provide any width while that's the only way you break a china wall infront of you!

I agree Can dropping into the middle as Benteke was easily skipping Lucas for fun but you forget Can goes to sleep when you need to mark someone. He is poaitonally inept to play the holding role in the first place.

Wijnaldum was a distaster and rightly should have taken up the Lallana role yesterday which he did not.

The point is Palace had no intention to press us nor wanting the ball hence we had tons of possession without doing anything with it. They maintained the shape and we always struggle against teams who makes a good shape at the back. No wonder the only goal came from a free kick and the chance for Can came from someone hitting the byline and crossing into the box.

I don't think Lallana would anything on the above attribute.

A winger would have made the difference as his pace will stretch their full back and will hit the byline consistently which will open up space in the middle for Wiji / Can or even Coutinho slot into.

Lallana plays through middle as well Coutinho!

9.) 24 Apr 2017 14:38:59
UEFALona, I think we both said more or less the same thing there Harry lol.

10.) 24 Apr 2017 15:23:58
Please don't start this.

Sturridge was and is not the abswer.

He wouldn't of had that 'magic'.

He hasn't all season. Just don't build it up thay when he returns he will bring us all the goals we need. Or that if klopp sells him he made a mistake.

11.) 24 Apr 2017 15:34:22
Some fair points made, but I do think Llalana is better in the box than Can and we had a few chances that went begging, especially the one he missed that Wijnaldum teed him up on. He seems better and arriving late in the box but maybe that's just me.

Actually on one of my other posts I actually agreed with your comment on Couts, and given limited options on the bench I would have dropped Coutinho into midfield and put on another winger.

02 Mar 2017 07:49:37
Hi Eds. looking forward to the Arsenal match this weekend, usually step up against the top half sides.

Question I'd like to find out about is Grujic. He looked very impressive in preseason and had a huge rep coming into our squad as a decent signing.
Where is he? Is he or has he been injured all season? See a few others getting match time in cups and the odd league game, but he's never even on the bench.
If he's not injured, is he not settling or not good enough (which I'd find odd seeing him play in preseason)

Max Renn

{Ed001's Note - injured on and off all season.}

22 Oct 2016 22:49:54
Was there a hand shake with Klopp and Pulis after the match? Saw Klopp shake WBA staff, but not TPs

Just miss it or not happen?

Max Renn

1.) 22 Oct 2016 23:42:29
I thought that Pulis Gareth Baled after the match, and who would blame him after that performance?

2.) 22 Oct 2016 23:48:28
Didn't happen Pulis went straight down the tunnel.

3.) 23 Oct 2016 00:05:36
Klopp looked to shake hands with Pulis at the end. but it looked like Pulis had already . ' left the scene '

4.) 23 Oct 2016 01:04:56
Cos he got completely owned by Klopp even tho the scoreline sadly for us, does not reflect that. Stone Age football lost again and long may it continue.

17 Sep 2016 14:23:52
Just wondering if any who where bitching after Burnley have come back with any other wise words to offer?

Max Renn

1.) 17 Sep 2016 14:57:54
I bitched and moaned like a little girl, because it was last season all over again. Looks like I was wrong, although we always play well against top teams. I'm very very impressed with how we have played with our tough start.

For me though the challenge has always been the lesser teams so let's wait and see what happens with hull, we should absolutely demolish them shouldn't we?

It will be a tough game, hope we get over the line and burnly was a blip.

2.) 17 Sep 2016 16:27:59
Beating the big teams have never been a problem for us as we have the best record of any top six club vs City, Chelsea and and Spurs over the past ten years. Arsenal and Utd, not so much and that is historical yet we have been competitive against both. The challenge now is to replicate such perfs against the lesser teams and that is our challenge moving forward. First test? Hull next Sat.

3.) 17 Sep 2016 17:09:04
Were I Klopp I would be reminding my players of the Burnley result and demanding they show a marked improvement. To me this is clearly an issue of mentality. They have the talent.

4.) 18 Sep 2016 01:56:01
Maybe you should give klopp a call and tell him what he needs to tell the players.

5.) 18 Sep 2016 02:53:02
We had 80% possession against Burnley but just no cutting edge. I know that has been our problem in the past but with these forwards and Mane back, I think Klopp will sort it out and we'll start scoring against the Lower sides earlier in the game like we did in 13/ 14.

Also bear in mind we got caught on the break twice but no Matip or Karius and Hendo/ Wij/ Llalana still learning their new setup and Milner still growing into LB. I don't think we'll be quite so naive or easy to score against next time.

6.) 19 Sep 2016 08:53:25
I think Klopp's doing nicely without my input.
So whatare people disagreeing about? That our players are talented or that the inconsistencies are largely down to them not going into games against less fancied teams with the right mental approach?

30 Aug 2016 23:55:15
Milner will do a lot better then Moreno, which is exactly what we all wanted. Judge after many games played before disregarding and slating.

Maybe Moreno not being the first choice LB will spur on a change in his game, an improvement. Unlikely but while he is a red let's give him and Milner full support.

Max Renn

1.) 31 Aug 2016 04:35:09
Milner is a hard worker and a good professional so he, unlike many, will take any position given and try to do well. The problem is he is simply not a full-back and that he will make mistakes because of this. It's not about his quality as a player, it's about the fact that he is playing out of position. No other club with top 4 aspirations would play a midfielder as a full-back instead of buying a replacement for a player clearly not up to task. It is a strange way to conduct business and a strange way to run the club and, except for Klopp saying he's fine with the situation, I can see no reason why the club have not addressed a situation that was apparent before this transfer window even opened. It is rank incompetence plain and simple and I think it will affect our results this season.

{Ed001's Note - you say that, but Bayern needed a defensive midfielder so they moved Lahm there. It does happen. It is just that we could have bought one and didn't that is the issue.}

2.) 31 Aug 2016 05:17:54
That's true what you say about Bayern Ed but, in my opinion, a little different for a number of reasons:

- Lahm is a world-class player making the transition less severe - a change in position, for a less talented player, would have been more damaging/ less successful.

- Bayern are a team with much more quality meaning, even if Lahm was not a perfect choice, he could still play in that position without too much detriment to the team - therefore such a change does not have the same sort of impact. Our defence is weak anyway and, incorporating a player completely out of position to band-aid it weakens it more in my view - changing Lahm to defensive midfield didn't really weaken Bayern (though personally I always preferred him as a full-back) .

- Finally, I think (and you may disagree here Ed! ) that the transition from full-back to defensive midfield is an easier one than from central midfield/ right midfield to left-back. The difference is made even more stark by Milner being pretty one footed and, when getting forward, having to cut back onto his stronger foot.

I'm not saying it is an outright disaster - as the OP says he is still better than Moreno (which is a positive! ) - it just strikes me as odd that the club didn't do more to secure the services of a left-back given how obvious an area of concern it is. I hope Milner transitions quickly and successfully - I suspect that, in reality, teams will look to attack both our flanks as it is our Achilles heel (and has been for seasons now) . Time will tell eh.

{Ed001's Note - first point I agree with, though it was clear Lahm was not a defensive midfielder and never reached the level he did at full back.

Second point I agree, except that Milner is clearly better there than Moreno, so I fail to see how it weakens the defence to play him there instead.

Thirdly almost all full backs are failed wingers, Milner is a winger, so that is nonsense. Sorry but it quite simply is. Many wingers have transitioned to full back later in their career. It is a very common switch. Whereas I honestly can't think of another full back that has moved into central midfield.}

3.) 31 Aug 2016 05:55:48
That's true actually Milner is better than Moreno. I suppose what I meant to say was that playing Milner there, rather than signing someone, keeps the position relatively weak. You're correct though he is better than Moreno.

Yeah to be fair I can't think of another full-back who moved to defensive-midfield either - maybe only your favorite Ed Zanetti? But he was a freak and could play everywhere so not really a fair to compare him to any other player. I think the biggest problem for Milner is him being predominantly right-footed and being a left-back. It really limits his ability to be an attacking outlet and will perhaps get him into trouble against some of the better wide players in the league. It will remarkable if he does make the transition and become a solid left-back for us though - and should it happen I will gladly hold my hands up and admit to being wrong.

Bet you'll be happy when this transfer windows over Ed!

{Ed001's Note - that is my biggest issue with Milner at left back, not being left footed is a real weakness. If he was left footed I would be a lot less worried by him being used there. Zanetti literally played anywhere, bit like Stevie Nicol, but yes he was a very good midfielder.

I am always glad when the window is shut! I miss sleep.....}

4.) 31 Aug 2016 06:28:01
Agree that Milner will do a better job than Moreno at LB.
The problem being is though will he grow into the position or will it be like Saturday every game.
Milner I thought played well but then one mistake caught out of position and spurs scored.

Also I wouldn't mind seeing Moreno up top then, last 15mins just to run at defenders when there legs are going.

5.) 31 Aug 2016 06:55:18
@Lavers - in theory that is not a bad idea - the problem is Moreno just can't take his man on. He has no ability with the ball at his feet and no attacking guile about him - which makes his incessant forays deep into the opposition half an even bigger mystery as they rarely, if ever, produce anything. If he was a good attacking threat and just a shocking defender then using him as you suggest would be good - sadly he just ain't that impressive going forward and I doubt him being brought on with 15 minutes to go would do anything.

6.) 31 Aug 2016 08:28:55

I agree he is crap the ultimate goal has got to be him being sold.

Just thought whilst he is on our books maybe a little cameo at the end running at tired legs you never now.

7.) 31 Aug 2016 09:39:16
only if the game is won lavers, he simply cannot be trusted, which is why milner is playing there in the 1st place, the bigger story is why a club of Liverpool's size does not have a left back deemed ready for the 1st team from any of our age group, that in itself is truly shocking.

8.) 31 Aug 2016 12:07:06
I can think of an ex full back that's doing quite well up front for Real Madrid!

Fact is the goal was against the rules and shouldn't have stood, so it's only the officials fault.

Max Renn

{Ed001's Note - no, you still have to look at what went wrong and look to fix it from your part, so that you do not have to rely on officials. Shanks made a big thing of that, after the officials cheated us versus Inter Milan. He wanted the players to do it all themselves, so that the officials would not be able to cheat us ever again.}

IMO it's about time we signed more established players who can do a job straight off. We're filled with potential and young kids.
The players who have performed this season, for a fair chunk of it, Milner, Matip, Henderson, Lallana, Firmino and when called upon Lucas has more often then not done a decent job considering he plays out of his position and sporadic. All of these are senior players.
Teams like Chelsea, Utd and the top sides abroad often buy finished articles amongst the potential. It looks tried and tested to me and something we rarely do. But as Milner, Lallana (when coached properly) and Matip have shown, they come straight in improve us and over the season the most consistent.

What's a good rule of thumb for finances? Without going indepth, say add 50% to cover the cost us fans never consider?
I understand the hassle of explaining and clarifying money spent questions, but is it better to think if the press add our transfer fees to show we spent £60m on players, really it was more like £90m.

Think it might shut a few moaners up and stop a few future questions.
