Good morning,
Quick question Ed002 if you're about.

Do you think VVD and Keita will sign by the end of the weekend? Joke.

I recall you mentioned that with the new TV deal with BT in place, a number of foreign owners would possibly look to sell come 2017. Are FSG actively looking for buyers?

Do you also see more investment from China? Looking to buy premier league clubs etc.

Cheers.

NickyD

{Ed002's Note - The problem is that due to the stupidity of the Brexit vote the pound is worth zip at the moment - which makes a great time to buy if you have foreign funds but a rotton time to sell if the owners are not keeping the money in GBP.

Since China opened up it has thrown a massive potential market in to the mix for professional sports (not just football, but there are other growth sports as well) and a number of Chinese companies see the potential for significant income form the game. Chinese money is already flooding through football with ownership and/or investment in clubs as diverse as Inter Milan, Espanyol, Den Haag, Milan, Sochaux, Aston Villa, Milan, Atletico Madrid, Slavia Prague and significantly, City Football Group. City Football Group of course owns or npart owns Manchester City, New York City, Yokohama F Marino, Atlético Torque, Atletico Venezuela and Melbourne City - and are looking to expand in to China and further in South America. 20% of the group is Chinese owned. For years the professional game in China was under a cloud of corruption (including match-fixing) and the Chinese, and to be fair FIFA, have worked very hard to resolve the issues. The game is on the up there and they have the money to pretty much do what they want, and this involves taking a mix of players to play in China - there are high profile players at high-profile English sides that are being offered significant financial rewards for moving to China. There is now a shift coming in Europe and I would expect to see further investment in European sides - there is one organization looking hard at Germany and another already successful in buying in to Italy. They of course have to work within certain legal ownership frameworks and that will restrict investment in certain countries. Do not be surprised to see another English side be taken over by Chinese owners in the not too distant future (let me suggest Lander might look to complete the deal for Southampton soon). Meanwhile, the profile of the game at home is increasing and the market to be tapped significant. I spent several months in Hong Kong working in both 1988 and again in 1990 and it was clear then that the mainland needed a step change and it could get leverage over so much - since then that has happened. Six months working out of Beijing in 2005 (until they pretty much forced me out) showed that changes were happening - since then I understand from colleagues who do visit that it has moved on a lot.

In terms of my personal view:

The Chinese are intent on cleaning up their act and want to promote sport within a nation that has only recently fully opened their doors to the outside world. There is a significant shift in wealth to the Far East and in particular China. They will invest and build in their own leagues and they will go to other parts of the world to learn. Chelsea has lost a couple of players to China and has had an approach about a another. Other players from the EPL have followed and there will be more - although the Chinese authorities are now bringing in restrictions to make it more manageable - but in the longer term the Chinese will cherry pick and then look to grow. This then leads to potential movement of players within the consortia (as Udinese has done with Watford) and that is something we will see more of but there are pleanty of walls in the way based on (a) convenience, and (b) potential abuse of national or international FFP rules. They will learn from the mistakes of others and they will soon be looking to add coaching capabilities by recruiting from other leagues. It is progress - like it or not.}

There will be more global City Football Group style collectives appearing. There will be growth in China. And so it goes.}

1.) 09 Jul 2017 10:25:16
Really interesting.

I didn't realise how involved the City foootball group are.

Thank you for the detailed response, as always.

Cheers
Nicky.

2.) 09 Jul 2017 11:27:15
Correct me if I'm wrong ed but I remember reading that potentially a Chinese under 21 team or in that region are joining the lower tiers of the German league to help develop them and gain experience.

{Ed002's Note - It is not quite like that but there is a recent agreement that will see a connection between the countries and there has been a recent youth tournament - I don't know what happened.}

3.) 09 Jul 2017 12:11:09
Wonder if any of these football collectives are planning on making Liverpool FC their flagship, we all know that there's only maybe 10 clubs in the world with as big or bigger fan bases than us.

4.) 09 Jul 2017 13:00:16
Nice read Ed02 many thanks.

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome.}

5.) 09 Jul 2017 17:18:45
Eds, I read something about the Chinese government making it more difficult for companies to invest in things like football cubs abroad recently, something to do with reducing the flow of money out of the country and to combat money laundering. Is this correct? I also heard something about some players finding it difficult to get their money out of China, is that true do you know?

{Ed002's Note - It is true that the Government want to regulate the amount being spent - but remember in some cases this is Government money. I don't know about the players. We had to prove that we were not money laundering back in the day and that we were not hiding money away. Nowadays (starting in 2006 which was after I left) there are many western backs in China so I doubt it is much of an issue.}

6.) 09 Jul 2017 18:00:18
Thanks ed, you've lived some life haven't you, I bet you're a bloody interesting chap to have a pint with.

7.) 09 Jul 2017 20:20:33
I'm not sure why but I'm under the impression ed002 is female I seem to recall reading it at some point but I could be wrong? But so many posters seem to refer to ed002 as male? So which is it ed002?

{Ed002's Note - For the right money I can be anything you want.}

8.) 09 Jul 2017 22:20:57
Thats a top secret here.

One of the most interesrting topics open for discusaion anytime.

Cheers.

9.) 10 Jul 2017 02:39:46
The sharkpod makes her sound like an 70s East German olympic sprinter (no offence ma'am)

10.) 10 Jul 2017 10:35:38
I reckon Ed002 is a female former KGB spy, far too many secret contacts to just be muggle like the rest of us.

11.) 10 Jul 2017 12:45:19
It was a joke made by Ed1 to seed a rumour that Ed2 is a "she". That has long been disproved. Although, there are days you might think it's "that time of the month" with Ed2 :-) . On the other hand, who can blame the man?

14 Dec 2016 12:42:08
Ed001,

Any idea on how long Can is out for?

Cheers.

NickyD

{Ed001's Note - he is having a fitness test later, he might well be fit to play tonight.}

1.) 14 Dec 2016 13:03:18
Fair enough.

Thanks ed001.

{Ed001's Note - welcome Nicky.}

2.) 14 Dec 2016 15:26:45
Good news on Emre. Is it a simular thing with lovren ed?

{Ed001's Note - yes.}

05 Dec 2016 21:35:59
Matip recovered for West Ham this weekend?

Hope so.

NickyD

01 Jul 2016 19:49:36
Quick question for Ed002 if I may.

Reports showing Palace are showing an interest in Benteke and Liverpool looking at a significant fee for him.

Is their interest due to the fact they have more money to spend as a result of the new TV revenue?

Cheers.

NickyD

{Ed002's Note - No, their interest will be because they see that the player can improve their side.}

1.) 01 Jul 2016 23:44:03
Can u see us getting the 30mill we are holding out for Ed002? . Or will we get 28 or something. I thought 25 was good.

{Ed002's Note - I would not get too wrapped up in the money McD.}

2.) 02 Jul 2016 06:08:02
Sure thing Ed 2, of course they see Benteke as an option to improve their squad, hence the bid.

I just thought that it was significant as I've never seen the likes of say Palace bid that amount for a player, especially when you factor in all the additional costs, agents fees, VAT on these fees, potential relocation costs etc etc,

Having said that, I think I read below that Palace have backing from the US so that may have answered my question.

3.) 02 Jul 2016 09:53:54
Money is clearly not an issue for Palace as they had no problem splashing 33m on a bid for Batshuayi. I think the deal will go through especially because he wants the move and we don't wanna keep him.

4.) 03 Jul 2016 04:05:09
obviously it's because of the TV deal. no idea why Ed 02 disagreed with that comment. i don't think they can afford to bid that much with out it.

{Ed001's Note - because you are wrong. They could not afford to spend that much because of the TV deal. Why do ignorant people argue when it is clear they have no idea what they are talking about? Palace were taken over recently by an extremely well-financed group who are pumping money in. That is why they can afford it, not because of the TV money, which they have not received yet anyway.}

5.) 03 Jul 2016 07:34:25
Spot on, Ed. They are financial backers from the States if I'm correct. If not, you may correct me.

{Ed001's Note - correct, they are an American consortium.}

29 May 2016 16:28:53
Hello all, Eds and Reds

Not sure how many carp anglers there are on here, I am one myself and go to France a couple of times a year fishing.

A complex where we go is called Dream Lakes and a friend of mine is there at the moment.

He is fishing with his son and two swims along is young Brannigan. They have been talking and have had a brew together. Brannigan has also had a kick about with my friends son which is really great.

Being a big LFC fan, my mate text me and sent in photos, he said Brannigan is so down to earth.

I did ask him if he knew anything regarding Couthino and he reckons he will stay with us. Interestingly enough, Brannigan has also been approached by Barcelona!

I don't very often start posts but thought this was quite interesting and the fact he's be playing footie on the bank with my mates son. I think it's brilliant.

NickyD

1.) 29 May 2016 17:02:09
Isn't he was wanted by Barcelona years ago?

2.) 29 May 2016 17:39:55
Recently as well matey.

3.) 29 May 2016 19:01:32
He has been on Barcelona's radar for while and they have been watching his contract negotiations as recently as the last several weeks.

4.) 29 May 2016 19:40:35
Thank you Scouse for reiterating that.

5.) 29 May 2016 23:21:07
Brannigan got back from USA and over to france quickly then.

6.) 29 May 2016 23:44:08
You're welcome mate.

7.) 30 May 2016 06:35:45
Why on earth would I make something like this up Hoola? Just check back on my posting history and you will find It's not in my nature whatsoever. He's there, in France, Carp angling.

It's a shame I can't post pictures my mate sent me a lovely photo of Brannigan signing his young son's Liverpool shirt.

{Ed001's Note - you can post up pics on here. Message on the contact form (at the bottom of the page) to get Ed033 to pull his finger out and put up the link again!}

8.) 30 May 2016 06:49:39
I will do that Ed 1.

{Ed001's Note - cheers.}

9.) 30 May 2016 09:32:45
All sounds a bit fishy to me.

10.) 30 May 2016 10:21:36
I think you're just reeling us in.

11.) 30 May 2016 10:53:48
What a load of carp.

12.) 30 May 2016 11:19:10
Surprised it's take so long for the fishy jokes.

To be fair, I'm quite disappointed. I've met a good number of LFC players both past and present but none of the younger crop of players.

I used to go the the same complex in France twice a year and would have been there myself but for having to cut back on expenditure. I now have a two year old lad so the cost of my LFC season ticket and 2 trips to France each year was getting a bit much.

13.) 30 May 2016 17:51:54
For hooks hake 😠.

It's going to be a tough one today.

I'll take s draw.

NickyD

1.) 09 Sep 2017 13:42:53
So would a lot of us.

08 Sep 2017 06:54:26
I'd love us to beat City tomorrow without Couthino playing a significant role. A last fifteen min appearance from him when we are 4-0 up 😎All joking aside, It would really set down a marker and show other teams we mean business.

I'm not saying we will beat them, I think this is going to be a really tough game and we will need to be at our very best especially at the back. They will be right up for this but so will we

Come on red men!

NickyD

1.) 08 Sep 2017 07:56:38
Whilst a 4-0 scoreline would be delicious, its preposterous to think our fragile defense will last the distance with City's forwards. Will be a very open game and Im going with a 3-2 victory for LFC.
And get over your hate for Coutinho. I despise what he did too but he makes us a better team and we will need him more often than not coz our average defense will require our attacking players to be at their best on a consistent basis, and Coutinho will be a very valuable asset for doing that.

2.) 08 Sep 2017 08:25:10
Hope to see Solanke breakthrough and gives us something different upfront.

3.) 08 Sep 2017 08:37:34
Buzzer.

You need to read through my post again mate.

Did you not read " joking aside " when it comes to the score line?

Where in my post have I stated any hatred for Couthino? The clue is in the last sentence of the first paragraph.

4.) 08 Sep 2017 08:44:35
IB i think you've jumped the gun a bit mate. Nicky was making the point that it would be great if we could beat City comfortably without Coutinho playing a major role, as it would send out shockwaves if we beat a title favourite without one of our best players.

Nowhere has he said or even implied he doesn't want Coutinho to feature. No need to go looking for fights on here mate. Just post your opinions and the fights will come to you 😂.

5.) 08 Sep 2017 09:09:45
Chill out, IB. You're jumping the shark here, mate.

6.) 08 Sep 2017 09:12:20
That's exactly my point - Cheers MK.

7.) 08 Sep 2017 09:59:36
Haha didn't read the just joking part Nicky. My apologies.

8.) 08 Sep 2017 10:18:38
Hey Buzzer, It's cool and no need to apologise mate.

I was just a bit surprised as my crtitisim of our defence is very well documented on here - 😜.

05 Sep 2017 07:40:06
Wasn't at Wembley last night so I can't really judge the Ox from a pub tv screen. I'm not bothered about England, I went to the pub as an excuse for a pint and watch Chamberline.

From what I saw from him was speed, power with some poor decision making along with running up a few blind alleys. Bearing in mind this was a symbolic England team that looked like they'd never played together, especially in the first half.

Klopp has a lot of work to do but I think he'll get the Ox firing I really do. He'll have quality players around him in Couts, Firmino, Salah, Mané, Lallana etc which will inhance his game.

Get him firing on all cylinders and he could be one of those players that could be really effective against the teams that come and park the bus, you know the likes of Man United and Palace.

I could be totally wrong but he has the ability it just needs channelling.

NickyD

1.) 05 Sep 2017 09:43:36
Good post Nicky.

2.) 05 Sep 2017 10:48:32
Thanks mate 👍.

04 Sep 2017 12:29:56
Ed001, if you're about mate.

Reports saying the Ox wants a central midfield role, do you see Klopp accommodating this? It will be really interesting to see where he slits in.

I've never been too sure about Chamberline but if there's a manager that can get a "tune" out of him it's Klopp.

I don't know why but I've got a feeling this slightly underwhelming signing ( seen by most ) could turn out pivotal.

NickyD

{Ed001's Note - I expect Ox to play there and on the wings depending on who needs a rest. We do not really play normal centre mids, they are expected to provide a lot of help on the flanks so it might suit him.}

1.) 04 Sep 2017 16:21:33
Cheers mate, I really hope he gives us another productive option, I have a gut feeling it will.

03 Sep 2017 15:22:45
Ed 25 if you are around.

You edit quite a lot on this sight so would like it ask you a question.

Now I do see you are an Ed with expectional jesting skills but I also see through your blue nose tinted glasses, at times, there is some level of decency within your mind 😎

Do you think Bailey of United and Keane of Everton are better than Klavan and Lovren? Would really apreeciate an honest answer mate.

NickyD

{Ed025's Note - miles better to be honest nicky, lovren was very good at saints but at liverpool he has been a liability and is always prone to a major error, klavan is even worse and is prone to the odd decent bit of play, liverpool have a very good midfield and attack but you will always concede when you have those two clowns in your side, matip is slightly better than them two but lacks pace and is not the greatest positionally for me, keane looks good to me what iv seen but i dont like the way he passes back to the keeper without looking at times which is a bit of a worry, bailly when fit or not suspended is better than all of them for me mate..

1.) 03 Sep 2017 15:41:32
Sorry nicky but both keane and Bailey are a thousand times better than Lovren and Klavan. Especially Bailey who looks like he could be special.

2.) 03 Sep 2017 15:44:22
Thanks for the reply Ed25.

I've had a pretty heated discussion with Ed001 over Klavan and Lovren and I'm glad you've called them a pair of clowns, I got slated by Ed001 by calling them useless lol. In fact I got totally abused, good job I'm thick skinned or I'd have been asking for the Liverpool rumours HR dept to file a complaint - haha. 😂 Joking

I've followed my team home, away and all over Europe for nearly 30 years and I could cry at times when I see those two names on the team sheet.

{Ed025's Note - some will say im biased because im a blue nicky but thats not the case here mate..

3.) 03 Sep 2017 16:16:03
Whilst I agree bailly is easily the best of that bunch I wouldn't say Keane is mailes ahead. I also think part of it is to with the the way the teams set up to play. Mourihno always sets his midfield up well to cover his defence which does take a little more pressure off them.

4.) 03 Sep 2017 16:35:38
Nicky-I'm pretty sure ed1 doesn't rate Klopp and Klaven either.

{Ed001's Note - Klopp? I don't rate Klavan, nor Lovren particularly, as he is too inconsistent but it is pointless crying to Ed025 as he thinks everyone in red is crap due to those blue tinted specs he wears. My point was that Nicky was just slating them, not even pointing out any particular deficiency, just bitching about them and it is boring as hell hearing it over and over the same whines. People need to move on. We have what we have, it is up to the coaching staff to improve them.}

5.) 03 Sep 2017 16:52:12
I fully agree Ed001, but it is also up to the players to follow instructions.

Once we defend as a team then we will be unstoppable.

{Ed001's Note - agreed, we do need to learn that. The improvement in the fullback positions should help a lot.}

6.) 03 Sep 2017 17:23:44
Love it when we all get together haha.

Crying to Ed25.😂Come on Ed001, look beyond 25's blue tints, he can talk sense. Plus I read a comment from him regarding our transfer window and the fact we have not improved the CB's and he is correct.

Once I'm back from the game, I will be constructively critical if I decide to comment on here. The conversation today did involve slating Klavan and Lovren because it's a new season and again I'm seeing the same mistakes. I see absolutely nothing that changes my mind - Nothing. Another transfer window has past we will still be seeing the same deficiencies on the field and I'm still seeing them.

Like it or not, we hear the same criticism from the pundits, the radio phone ins etc etc. We can't all be wrong.

Like ed001 says, we have what we have and I just hope we can improve through more effective coaching.

I hate Jose's boring football but he wins trophies and that's what counts, not beautiful football.

{Ed001's Note - I know I am winding up Ed025 mate.}

7.) 03 Sep 2017 17:39:08
Yeah, I reckon Clyne is going to have a very difficult time claiming back his spot. Moreno has upped his game too but Robertson looks like he will be first choice.

All in all, we have a very capable squad now.

8.) 03 Sep 2017 18:08:03
I thought that Ed001

I'm waiting for him to take the bait lol

On another note, am I correct in thinking you live in the UAE? Dubai? Where do you live there?

I used to travel to the Middle East with work, I used to stay in a hotel opposite the Burjuman centre and I can't remember the name of it for the life of me!

My aunty and uncle have lived out there for years, near Jebell Ali at the moment.

{Ed001's Note - there are loads in the area there, was it one of the Golden Sands group? I am just over the creek from there in Deira, the old (and cheaper) part of Dubai.}

9.) 03 Sep 2017 18:23:28
But Klavan's not even played this season has he? So how are you seeing the same mistakes from him meaning he's deserving of slating Nicky?

10.) 03 Sep 2017 18:42:58
I remember, it was Regent Palace Hotel Ed1.
Literally opposite the Burjamen Mall.

Not far from the Creek, the bottom end of the Sheikh Zayed Road. If my memory serves me correctly.

{Ed001's Note - ah ok, I think I know it. The Burjuman has just had a big refit. It is not that far from me.}

11.) 03 Sep 2017 18:53:40
Tomoslee.

Did you not watch the Palace game at home? When Benteke should have scored with Klavan no where to be seen?

Or maybe he wasn't playing?

Get your facts right mate.

12.) 03 Sep 2017 18:53:04
I may be wrong on this, but this our team/ defense has improved in setting offside traps in the 5 games I have seen.

13.) 03 Sep 2017 21:08:45
Said it before and will say it again. Keane is slow and no good on the ball. Easy to look good as a defender in a team that sits deep and plays defensively, e. g under mourinho or koeman. Under Klopp and our style of play he'd be useless.

Interestingly enough, I think Bailey and Keane ( now at Everton ) are better than both Klavan and Lovren. I only see our CB's live and the errors they make, so full judgment based on seeing the other two live only twice a season is difficult.

I will agree with you regarding Gomez, he looked very composed before he got injured and also the appearances he's made this season. He's not rash on the ball and will try and bring the ball down, chested or otherwise, and puck a pass, as apposed to just heading the ball back to the opposition or no mans land when it comes to him.

Again I agree we need better but we've needed better form when klopp started. For me, Matip is the only one I'd keep out of the three. Conceding 12 goals last season from set pieces is not good enough. Now is that zonal marking? For me it's a mixture of Zonal marking and individual errors.

We are never going to win anything unless we dramatically improve at the back, be it be new personal or better coaching. This has been proven since the BR days and has filtered through to klopps reign. We have won nothing.

I'm fully behind building for the future but as it stands, under klopp, we have improved our strengths but not our weaknesses.

Me neither Ed 1.

I see far more watching the back 4 when it's live.

This conversation is to do with our failure to sign a decent centre half durng his appointment at LFC.

NickyD

{Ed001's Note - it really depends, if you had access to the scouting sites, you would see even more. You can watch it over and over again from multiple angles. It makes a huge difference.

The conversation is just pointless, no one signed a top class centre half other than one going to Milan. There are very few of them available and each one had 10s of suitors after them if they did. It says a lot that so many were after VVD and Jonny Evans, neither of which are top class. There just aren't many around which is why teams are taking chances on players like Bailly and Lindelof in the hope of getting lucky and they work out. We already have one player in that mould in Gomez, that is intended to be gradually fed in, so we couldn't go and get another without blocking his route. It is a long term view Klopp is taking, it is how he works. There is none of this buying a quick fix, he always wants to look at building for the future.

We have 2 decent centre halves, we don't need a decent centre half now, we need a better centre half and that is the issue, they are all just decent or unavailable. No point buying to stand still with players that are only of equal quality. Better to develop Gomez, who is expected to be far better than decent.}

Ed 25, the issue is no that as Liverpool fans, we have divine right or beat everyone, it's the fact that once again, we threw yet another game away through woeful defending.

This is not about beating a team 5-0 but getting the job done.

I hope he plays tonight but for the moral of the team, I think it was the correct decision to leave him out on Saturday. I thought City were very good in Midfield and at their best in attack. With or without Couts, I personally don't think we'd have beaten City, for starters we just couldn't cope with K. De Brugne.

Exactly MK.

Every team suffers a serious set back, just look at Chelsea's terrible start to last season, then look what happpend!

But we need to re group and get the job done tomorrow
