Hi Ed002. It has been reported today that Dejan Lovren has a few suitors this summer. A price of £18m has been suggested but I don't know where they've plucked that from. Lazio, AC Milan, Lyon are all mentioned and, somewhat surprisingly, Tottenham and Arsenal.

Also today, his potential replacement, Diego Carlos is in the news. Rumours that we approached his representatives in January but these were rebuffed due to him not wanting to move mid-season. Do you have any information on whether Carlos is open to the move to us or potentially waiting for Real Madrid?

With Lovren being behind Matip and Gomez and his replacement eyed as a starter, I do wonder what Matip will think of this. With the emergence of Gomez in the second half of this season I started to question whether a younger, perhaps home-grown option would be better to replace Lovren. Klopp does seem to be a bit harsher on Gomez's performances than others. Tends to speak of improvements needed in his game and so I can see Carlos coming in if Klopp wants and of course the player himself.

barnesybob

{Ed002's Note - Milan were interested last year but that interest has likely gone with them having identified several options for this summer - and they have serious money issues that mean they have to balance the books. Lovren spent a year or two at Lyon but their priority is RM, CM, S and possibly RW. Possible but I am not so sure they have shown any interest. Lazio is a better option as a Plan B to first choice replacement for Luiz Felipe who is expected to leave in the summer. I am not aware of any approaches by Arsenal or Spurs.

We have dealt with this before: Diego Carlos (CB) Manchester City have dropped their interest and are looking at others. Real Madrid has a sustained interest and Liverpool has declared an interest in taking DC in the summer as the player wants to see the season out. If this happens, I would think it would be the big move for the club this summer and would leave Gomez picking up pieces across the defence. The player would want assurances about game time as he would be a starter.

Matip will know that he is not going to be first choice going forward - in the same way that this could see Nathaniel Phillips thinking about future options.}

Hi Ed002, with everything being so up-in-the-air at the moment due to the SARS CoV 2 virus, do you think there will be a knock on effect to the summer transfer window?

{Ed002's Note - It is a good question and depends on when the decision comes to draw the line across or when the games are played. The issue of contracts running out June 30 will likely see UEFA agree to month on month extensions or even game by game. If it could be completed by say August 30 then you could see the window reduced to one month potentially.}

2.) 16 Mar 2020 12:30:37
I must admit I often overlook Phillips due to his lack of game time, I imagine he would look to leave after gaining a lot of first team football this season. He signed a new contract last summer. I imagine that was to protect his value or hope that he does well on loan. Perhaps if he leaves, Lovren leaves and Matip considers then the defence will need a couple of new faces? Or Hoever and van den Berg will need to rapidly step up. Interested to see what happens. Many thanks.

Potentially in turn Ed we could we see the end to this football season running on until say July or August?

{Ed002's Note - At won't restart in a couple of weeks. At some point a decision needs to be made - and probably by the start of May the decision will be an informed one and the EPL can continue an intrude in to the summer a little, or it will then need to have the line drawn across and preparations made for next season.}

5.) 16 Mar 2020 15:02:57
Thanks, Ed002.you've already answered the next question I had about contracts. With the infection pattern across Europe, I'd be surprised if they manage to finish domestic leagues without serious compromises by all national leagues.

{Ed002's Note - It needs a rule change by FIFA - just for say 12 months.}

6.) 16 Mar 2020 15:52:28
Thanks Ed, appreciate you are mainly giving us what you no on the same subject. I hope this season does get concluded, even if it is May and behind closed doors.

It's all over. What an 11 months. We've argued, disagreed and despaired with each other but most importantly we've celebrated together. I, for one, am most grateful as I live in Kent, and although I have red friends down here, I haven't been able to discuss and get caught up in all the emotion of this year because of lockdown and other factors. You lot have been here, at the touch of a button, after every single game, after every single win, after every bit of news and you're going to be part of my memory of winning the league.

I thought it wouldn't finish, we were stuck on 82 points for months while we waited for news of a restart. In the end Man City reached 81 points. How thankful we should be that it wasn't 'null and voided' and this country is getting back on its feet.

Eds. thanks. Ed001, what a site you have, thanks for everything in keeping it going. Ed002, the insight you give us is truly excellent, I don't know if you know how appreciated your time is but I'm definitely grateful for it. Ed025, thanks for reminding us constantly that things could be worse and we could support Everton and all of the reality checks you give us.

Have a good fortnight everyone, then it's back to pre-season, we've got a title to defend.

barnesybob

{Ed025's Note - very nice that bob, cheers mate..

1.) 26 Jul 2020 23:23:26
No fortnight off for me I'm going to be on here every day reminding everyone that we are Premier, European and World Champions.

2.) 27 Jul 2020 03:40:50
Great Post Bob, although we ain't defending it, we're attacking it with everything we've got 😉 up the reds.

3.) 26 Jul 2020 23:23:51
Well said. Cheers Eds, much appreciated. I'll get back one day for that pint at Flannagan's Apple 025.

{Ed025's Note - look forward to it burkey mate..

Hi Ed002, a question on scouting/ transfers. Are scouts set 'assignments' as such? As in, head of scouting gets told by manager/ director of football what position or type of player is required? Or is it more keeping a list of players, keeping a close eye on their careers and target them when required? Maybe both.

Also, sort of linked to the previous question. If targets change, for instance a worldwide C.V. (I know I'm getting far-fetched here) disrupts finances and clubs have to adapt and lower their outgoings and focus on creative deals like player swaps. Would they change targets to somebody not previously scouted or is this irresponsible as in panic buying? We know Shaqiri could potentially be offered as a makeweight in a deal for Carlos, but more to my point and a better example. you mentioned Grujic's people have spoken to Lazio, would Liverpool think 'Let's have a look at Milinkovic-Savic or Luis Alberto because they're more what we need. ' Obviously you've not mentioned these players before, just asking. Will clubs be doing this at the moment? Acting dynamic or just reckless?

Personally I'd be happier to stick (unpopular opinion) so I'm not purposely throwing names out to give you a headache.

barnesybob

{Ed002's Note - Scouts are generally given a a free hand by clubs and come uip with players who may not be a natural fix.}

1.) 19 Jun 2020 04:03:25
Didn't Luis Alberto play for us a while back and flopped? Or was that a different Luis Alberto?

2.) 19 Jun 2020 09:44:55
Same one.

Ed001, for something to do over the next two weeks could I propose a Liverpool Rumours best Liverpool 11 vote?

Something along the lines of every day at midday you create a post for votes on each position? So tomorrow could be GK, the next RB, then 2 CBS, LB etc.

I think the only issue would be selecting a formation as in 442 or 433. If we could choose 3 central midfielders, and 2 strikers we could do both formations as long as somebody could count up the comments, for example myself or you.

In terms of our current side, and Rafa's 4231, and Kenny's late eighties formation we could class Salah, Mané, Kuyt, Barnes and Beardsley as wingers. We could make it clearer on each daily post who qualifies for each position.

The results of the previous vote could be revealed at the beginning of the next post.

barnesybob

{Ed033's Note - For each poll, i need a question and voting options for people to vote on

1.) 26 Mar 2020 07:54:24

Ed002, I don't know if there's a simple answer to this because it's not happened before but what would likely happen in the event of our kit manufacturer's contract with the club running out before the end of the season? Does the contract run until a certain date? Or until seasons end?

I'm not bothered what kit we wear, it's more around any potential bonuses etc. Say the season was completed and Liverpool had won the league, qualifying for European competition. I assume we get paid more by our supplier?

I'm sure both New Balance and Nike would like any potential benefit of supplying the English champions and having their kit plastered over world media. Not sure Nike would like forking out a bonus after wearing their kit for maybe 2 games though.

I am assuming though, obviously I don't know what's been written into the contracts, if there is even bonuses agreed. Hopefully not another court case.

barnesybob

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool will not be paid bonuses by New balance as they went to court to cancel the agreement they had made. The contracts typically cover the seasons with the exception of the final game - where clubs often where the incoming kit.}

1.) 19 Mar 2020 20:53:12
We could win the title in a Nike kit it would be crap for nb as I’ve liked them.

2.) 20 Mar 2020 11:15:41
When the time comes to return to football, I don’t care what kit we wear. Naked will do fine too!

Good morning Eds. Liverpool as a club, since the Van Dijk incident or maybe before, I can't fully remember, tend to come out in the media and deny interest in players that we are being linked to.
Lines such as rubbish or no interest or agents whipping up interest have all been fed to the media, local in particular.
Is this a response to tapping up issues and showing that the club may have learned from this? It seems to occur when reporting comes to a head and selling clubs maybe thinking 'where has this all come from? ' Liverpool then tend to rubbish claims before any allegations are made. I'm not just talking about this window. although it's happened with Pp, De Ligt so far.

barnesybob

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of this at all, sorry. The Pepe situation is that Liverpool contacted Lille directly as a result of an accusation that they had spoken directly to the player.}

1.) 26 Jun 2019 13:43:27
We didn't tap him up, did we, ed002? At least I hope we've (Klopp especially) learnt our lesson and haven't done so.

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of that being the case. As far as I am concerned there have been recent discussions with three sides two of which have made offers - one multiple offers. None of this involves Liverpool.}

2.) 26 Jun 2019 14:21:37
Thanks ed, it's good to hear we haven't broken the rules this time around.

{Ed002's Note - I don't think so.}

You could be right, personally I don't think he'll play. Maybe as a sub? Hopefully it affects him mildly like most people under the age of 30 and his game fitness doesn't drop. Remember the gap between last season and this was a similar timeframe and a lot of players looked leggy.

I hope we don't rush him, Everton or Ebbsfleet the player's health matters more than the opposition and challenge can also drain your energy levels. He's a player that always seems sharp but I'd rather we played Jota if there's any doubt, it's why we bought him. All we can do is wait and hope I suppose.

I doubt he’ll be back for the Everton game. He’s isolating for 2 weeks, no training, ill. He’ll have to work his fitness up and we have a squad to cover him. We don’t really mind what games he misses, just wish him well.

Similar thoughts to me then, what a shame with players like that. Shows how important the mental/ determination side of the game can be. He needs a touch of the Milner’s or Henderson’s about him. Hope he finds something in Cardiff.

barnesybob

{Ed001's Note - you only have to look at his social media to see he is another of those who believes they are already a star before actually achieving anything of note. He thinks he is a brand. Bit of a Lorus Karius vibe there sadly.}

Jeffinho, to answer your question, I don’t think he’s making it because he’s probably not good enough or consistent enough to put it bluntly. I don’t want that to sound like I’m slating him but we have a very good team and even with the youngsters there should be high expectations.

Sheyi Ojo will be 24 by the time he comes back and is available to play for Liverpool. He’s had 5 loans and not proved anything. This year he really needs to excel even to think about playing in the Premier League. Maybe he needs to find the right club. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s Liverpool, but for some reason I really want him to do well and would love to see him play for us. It’s up to him.

I think he was very well thought of as a kid because physically he developed quicker than others and looked a class above. There was even comparisons to my Uncle John from Jamaica! Ed001 is excellent with these sorts of questions, I’d like to know his thoughts on Ojo. Have you managed to see him play at all the last couple of years Ed?

barnesybob

{Ed001's Note - awful player to be honest Ojo. He has turned into a complete waste of talent. Quick, strong and lazy. Was dreadful in the SPFL, needs to wake up before he ends up retired by the age of 27. You only get so many chances in this game and he has wasted more than most.}

Football is a simple game to pick up and play. Having a ball and two people allows you to do that, you're right. What that has to do with the sport we watch though, I have no idea.

Get the ball, pass the ball and score. Like 5 year olds with no sense of the game but enjoyment. It's true that's all you need to play the game, but not to master it. There's 22 players on a field, seeing the game differently working under different people who see the game differently and performing for expectant fanbases who know what they want to see. Football is an incredibly in depth and complicated game if you ask me, there's so many variables from tactics, transfers, finances, mental and physical preparation, training, expectation, skill and the list goes on.

I agree the best way to get a team winning is to simplify things so everybody pulls in the same direction and is understanding of what it is they need to do but simplifying it too much discredits the sport and the work that goes into it.

For info. we will now have 18 non hg players. Too many. This does include Karius and Grujic who are available for sale. Clubs knowing we are over quota when beginning negotiations for either player isn’t exactly a strong starting point.

Judging by Grujic’s camps comments this week he will stay for a while but he’s for sale. And he will need to be sold or one other like Origi for someone like Sarr to arrive.

We could not register Karius for the season but a waste of Karius’ time and ours, not to mention money.

barnesybob
