There's several positions that need addressed this summer within the first team.
I would personally prioritize midfield. Dom has shown consistently he has the quality and needed attributes needed for the Premier League.
Macca and Grav are not the right gravy for me. Ryan tracked back for more effectively last season and won many more duels. I can't believe the money the lads now on. Ryan's overall game is average. He's not a great passer. He's not great physically and he doesn't have real pace. I'd hope he's reverted back to his positional obligations next season that made him look like a good player. If not, the likes of Alonso or Enrique would not have him in the team because if he's not a hard working 6 and doing his job, he offers little else in another midfield position.

Macca, little needs said. He's more suited to La Liga or the Italian league. The Premier League is leaving behind players like Macca. Falling over all the time to get a foul because you're getting overrun continuously.
I think our midfield is dreadful. Regardless of slots "tactics" Macca and Gravenberch have done very little this season. I would also mention Jones. There's moments in matches he couldn't be bothered to track back and he's not for me. Another one waiting for a crazy increase.
The squad needs a real cleanse and refresh.

I think you are a wee bit harsh on Grav. While he hasn't shown similar form to last year, imo he's being asked to do a different role.
The fact that he had Trent at right back, who played that full back inverted role when he often stepped into midfield helping the midfield out, passing forward and covering between the lines.
This season he doesn't know who's playing full back, anyone of five and none of them has Trent's range of passing. He also has an under performing Macca next to him, or Mr pass 5 yard, I am not tracking back or making a tackle, Jones.

14 Apr 2026 15:27:22
We need a starting RW, RB and CDM. Then we need to add to the squad depth.

14 Apr 2026 10:45:26
3 points off 3rd, 4 points clear off 6th with games to come against those around us. It will be an entertaining run in. Hopefully starts tonight with a special performance.

14 Apr 2026 15:00:15
Fingers crossed we do something special tonight. I have a feeling PSG might be a little bit complacent tonight. Donnaroma had a big game at Anfield last year, so maybe just maybe we can turn it around. 🙏🙏🙏

Slot, backing, and a big summer rebuild

14 Apr 2026 07:39:01
{Ed's Note - MK Scouser has posted a new article entitled, Slot, backing, and a big summer rebuild

14 Apr 2026 08:56:51
Good article.

Personally for me, I would look to get a proper DM in. Tchoumeni/Camavinga maybe, or surely we might say to Chelsea, your wage and squad are bloated, let's re look at Lavia. I think gravy is better suited further up, on the premise we sell Macca.

Right back certainly needs looking at. Neither can currently take to the field for more than 5 games in a row. I like Tino, but his injuries this year have been bad. That Kayode looks good.

Personally, I am not bothered about replacing Mo with an out and out winger as such. I think we more need a versatile forward as we move between formations for Xabi. I think with 2 strikers and a 10, we are set there for something like 4312 and variations. If Xabi wishes 433, we can maybe look at some sort of deal for Olise, who seems to miss home? I know it's a rumours site so possibly Gakpo and cash for him? Then maybe Barcola or Doue.

I'd still like a strong centreback option who's older. Vvd is probably in his last season next season. Jacquet and Leoni are young. Konate may move on. Maybe Kim Min Jae?

I'd still love another good midfielder too for rotations. I don't think Curtis Jones is the level required.

I think my main difference would be that, I don't feel as confident in the right back situation as yourself, MK. I don't think Bradley or Frimpong are the required level, and neither passes like Trent. Maybe Frimpong improves with Alonso, but with their inabilities to defend at times or cross, compounded by not staying fit, I'd rather something more solid.

2

14 Apr 2026 09:18:22
I would never want Gravenberch higher up the pitch. His passing is nowhere near good enough. As a 6, his ability to break the lines, with his ability to run past people, creates space, and then gives him more space for simple passes, but him trying to find the final ball is definitely not him.

If we could replace him and Mac Allister with Sobs as an 8 and a better number 6, I would definitely be down that route. Anderson and Sobs with Wirtz in front of them would be my choice.

11

14 Apr 2026 09:50:39
That article was nightmare fuel, MK. I can't go through another season of watching slotball. Even with the players he wants, we have seen for a year now that his version of football just doesn't work in English football. He has to go end of.

14 Apr 2026 10:01:46
Nice read but Slot isn't staying, there's no way. Lol.

I'd be looking to bring in 2 new wingers, a rb and a midfielder as an absolute minimum.

You can make the case to bring in more as well if the kids can't fill the gaps as our squad depth just isn't there.

Selling Macca, Gakpo and some of the fringe players will bring in some funds.

2

14 Apr 2026 10:08:21
He can definitely play cm and does often. I don't particularly like him in the pivot, it's a waste of his legs, I guess I am not seeing what you see regarding his passing. The stats say he has an accuracy in the high 80s for passing. I don't think he's particularly wasteful, certainly not Macca levels, who seem to earn adulation from our fans, yet Gravy has attempted 500 more passes and is rated 5% clear on accuracy, and that's without the shooting wildly from 40 yards.

I like his carrying ability further up the field. I don't rate his defensive awareness all that highly. When to sit, when to go. I think he's better suited alongside a Szobo as a cm and a proper dm.

2

14 Apr 2026 10:08:46
I think Slot is staying. I can feel it in my water.

3

14 Apr 2026 10:21:14
Rome, stop drinking water and switch to whisky - that would sort your issue out.

I personally think Grav would work as a ball playing 6 in a pivot with a destroyer. I haven't seen much of Archie Gray or Alex Scott - both of whom we have been linked with for different reasons recently and both of whom are HG.

Would either of them give a credible alternative to people like Camavinga, Tchouameni or Stiller?

2

14 Apr 2026 10:52:32
Grav isn't good enough in an 8, that's part of the problem this season. He was very good last season in more of a 6, and Macca in 8, sobs 10. Slot has switched round, and it hasn't worked. There's an old saying, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' Obviously, Arne hasn't heard of it.

2

14 Apr 2026 11:03:54
Surely the solution, and the Slot doesn't want to play, is Grav at 6, Szoboszlai at 8 and Wirtz at 10.

3

14 Apr 2026 11:34:35
I think with a good coach we don't need that many new signings. A good coach who can get the best out of these players. We need a "multiplayer".

Maybe a RB, maybe a midfielder.

If Grav plays like last season, that will fill a huge hole.

1

14 Apr 2026 11:48:32
Just cause vodka looks like water, Rome, you can't call it water. 🤣

2

14 Apr 2026 11:57:07
I'll reply to you when I'm sober, JLC!

2

14 Apr 2026 12:19:17
Phil babs nuts. Senesi on a free would be the experienced centreback I would get in, as for Lavia hes barely played for Chelsea since he signed, so cant think of any reason why you would want him.

4

14 Apr 2026 12:48:23
The issue I have with Gravy is that he's just too nice. I am not sure he's got the aggression or mentality to be a long-term no6.

The DM market is really difficult. There are unfortunately no Caicedos out there.

Unfortunately, Carlos Baleba has not had a good season, his head having been turned by the Man Utd links last season. Would still cost a fair whack to get him out of Brighton and he's not really a specialist no6 either.

I wonder if one of Amadou Onana or Boubacar Camara from Villa could be prised out of Villa.

Camara does have a horrible injury record, and I don't think Onana's availability is too hot either.

Going further afield, Ayyoub Bouaddi (Lille) and Mamadou Sangare (Lens) could be worth a look from Ligue 1, and then Luciene Agoume (Seville) and Mandela Keita (Parma) could also be interesting ones.

I know Caleb Yirenki (Nordsjaelland), Adam Wharton, Angelo Stiller (Stuttgart) and Djaoui Cisse (Rennes) have been linked, but I would say they are deep lying playmakers, not necessarily the grit and bite we might be after.

3

14 Apr 2026 13:25:25
Yorkie Red

He's been injured? He's played in all the games he was available for in the league, bar 1?
He started a lot of the games he played last season, when not injured.

The problem would be his injury history, not his playing?

0

14 Apr 2026 13:10:29
If Gravenberch doesn't have the aggression or the mentality to be a 6 we should get rid because he's not good enough on the ball to be a top player further forward.Last season he was aggressive, barging people outa the way to get that ball. This season he's regressed to the pansy that Jurgen didn't trust.

14 Apr 2026 14:05:55
Rio can now be Diaz replacement specially if he is given regular game time until the end of the season.

We should spend available funds on a quality winger and MacAllister's replacement.

We should not bring 4 to 5 new players again as this will again put us in "transition".

0

14 Apr 2026 14:18:08
Great post, Pelican. I agree with every point.

1

14 Apr 2026 14:19:40
Rome I think you should go to the doctor sounds like you have a uti.
Strange that because that's the best way to describe Slot, he is like an infection and if he stays beyond the end of the season am afraid that infection will turn to sepsis in the club.

0

14 Apr 2026 14:28:18
Florian, honestly, I am not against cashing in on Gravy if it meant we got a specialist no6. Gravy has all the tools but his lack of aggression will be his limiter.

0

14 Apr 2026 15:24:07
It's a shame FPF because last year he did all d things needed in a DM but also had that flash of skill. Turning away from opponents and leaving them for dead but sadly this year I've seen him not wanna get stuck in there too many times.

0

14 Apr 2026 07:03:03
Truth be told. I'd keep Slot if we turn it around and we finish 3rd and semi final of CL.
I know he is the problem and his communication is baffling, but well that's how Dutch are - calling potato a potato.
All his teams have actually played good proper attacking football including us last year, and I really fail to understand why he chose this type of football this year.

Next year no Salah, no Robbo and perhaps no Jones and Macca so more a new team that can work. (All folks that talk too much out)

I am sceptical if we get a new manager and new players it just too much of new and will take a couple of years to get going.

With Slot I think we will be back to old ways quickly next season with 3 necessary signing - RW , DM and RB

Many reasons why this season didn't work but some of it because players have just not been there when we needed them.

Next season most of them won't be here so finally a fresh start for Slot and us.

I am not sold on Alonso for two reasons
1. There will be ex players interference if he joins. (Aka United and Ole and whole 92 class thinking they are managers now)
2. He didn't choose us after Klopp despite us being the better fit for him and publicly declaring him first choice.

2

14 Apr 2026 07:31:31
So you are saying he might look like a potato, but he knows his onions?
Nah, I was backing Slot even up to February, but there are no excuses for not getting a better tune out of this team this season.

I think he's a good manager, but has just found his limitations at Liverpool. The tide has turned against him now, and a new manager deserves to take over in May with a full preseason to prepare.

11

14 Apr 2026 07:32:01
After watching last night's game, I was over the moon to see Leeds winning against the Devil's 11, and one of the worst referees, Mr Tierney, sending off Martinez for a slight hair pull. Irrespective of what Carrick says, the law says a hair pull is a red card offence. Wasn't much of a pull, but was great to see. Ha ha. Utd. 😀 😉 👍

8

14 Apr 2026 07:32:05
How can you know there will be ex players interfering?
He didn't choose anyone when Klopp left. He stayed at Leverkusen to defend their title.

4

14 Apr 2026 08:18:05
With results going our way, we really need to kick on now and secure CL football next season. Slot has got to go.

1. He looks as though he doesn't want to be there.

2. His decision to try and build fitness throughout the season has been a huge error.

3. His non use of squad players has been detrimental to their morale, effectiveness and value.

4. Worst of all, his controlling football tactics haven't worked and his stubbornness to not adapt or change them has cost us a season of football.

Bring in Alonso, high intensity football, high level of fitness and squad players used to change games and help with overall squad fitness and morale.

8

14 Apr 2026 08:30:45
Keeping Slot would be the equivalent of keeping Hodgson. He's shown nothing this year to justify another year: fitness issues, boring football, no clue on subs, and a major lack of desire or leadership.

9

14 Apr 2026 08:31:49
Stop Cafu. There's zero redemption for Slot at Liverpool regardless of whatever happens between now and end of the season, plus he wants to return to The Netherlands himself. Time for change.

8

14 Apr 2026 09:25:11
I doubt he'll be staying, he's not getting a new contract and he'll be entering his last season.
He's not got the right personality in my opinion. It's a job for him, it needs to be more than that. I don't think he's got the passion. I remember the King was asked if Hansen would have made a good LFC manager.

He's said "Nah, not passionate enough."

That's where I see Slot, and even though the commuting was never a big issue for me, perhaps it reveals more about Slot. This is a job, a temporary job.

It's a reason I favour Iraola, he's got the passion to inspire the players, to demand more from them and to connect to the fans.

6

14 Apr 2026 09:53:07
I've read some rubbish on here over the years, but this is up there. 😂

3

14 Apr 2026 10:16:15
There is no chance Slot will be here next year. He was great the 1st season but absolutely terrible this season, so bad that fans are bored to tears with 90% of the football served up.

Fighting for 5th place with a poor United, Chelsea n Villa teams. Ppl who think he could stay must be the same people who think Klopp would come back. Never going to happen.

3

14 Apr 2026 10:27:18
Slot defo not staying for the reasons identified - his methods, which have been rolled out more in this season, are detrimental to our performances and the Board can clearly see that.

Alonso, Iraola or Hoeness for me, with Hoeness being the biggest risk given his age and lack of EPL experience.

A tough call, for me, between Alonso and Iraola. Iraola has the experience of managing in the EPL. Alonso has the experience of playing in the EPL.

Alonso has the experience of managing 'big names', albeit unsuccessfully at RM, but we don't have prima donnas at Liverpool and I would hope that the Board back him, unlike the folks at RM.

Also, he does have a successful relationship having managed some of our current players at Leverkusen. I would be especially excited to see him get the best tune out of Wirtz, who I think will be key in the next few years.

However, very few managers have experience of managing big names, before they actually manage big names! So I'm not saying Iraola can't do it, just that he hasn't so far, hence a risk.

3

14 Apr 2026 10:44:45
Well I'll blink and lift my head above the trench line... and agree with Cafu. If Slot brings home 3rd and CL s/f or better.

He's more than 50% the reason we've had a dud year but by no means the whole reason. If he never understood how he won the league last season, he sure as hell knows now.

It's a moot point anyway, if the itks are to be believed (and I do); he's off.

I know I'm dui but I'd go:
1. Iraola (Liverpool style)
2. Slot (better the devil...)
3. Alonso (...than the one you don't)

Oops. I think that was my head.

0

14 Apr 2026 11:55:49
With Man Utd defeat last night, it leaves the door ajar for Slot, a chance to push the lads into a possible third place finish and walk away with his head held high.
I would thank him for completing his remit and then send him on his way. YNWA.

2

14 Apr 2026 12:35:27
Even if we finish third, it doesn't change the fact that the head coach has been extremely poor this season. We are unfit, lacking motivation, and have been woefully underprepared in about 90% of the games this season. If we do end up qualifying for next season's CL, it is only because the standard in the PL has plummeted in the last 2 or 3 years.

2

14 Apr 2026 12:54:16
We need to move on from Slot, regardless of what happens. His heart is clearly not in Liverpool and his footballing idea of control and low event football does not vibe with what the Anfield crowd needs.

Anfield is our superpower and is a non-negotiable when it comes determining the coach (and Sporting Director's) football idea.

I hope he wins every remaining game and bows out in glory, but I still think a parting of ways is right for Liverpool's long term future.

2

14 Apr 2026 13:06:49
He's tactically inept, I don't care if he wins the Champions League, he needs to go. I couldn't give a toss about his communication skills. This is not some further education course. He can talk pure gibberish with his back to press for all I care so long as he shows he's tactically capable of producing on the pitch, but he's incapable of getting the best out of a team that won the League under Klopp's tactics.

He's managed to revert a squad of elite athletes to the fitness level of amateur pub ballers, gassed out after 90 minutes. That fact alone is completely unforgivable in my book. Slot and Peeters have gone against decades of sports science at the top level because they think they know better, that's pure arrogance, ignorance, and stupidity on a level I cannot forgive.

2

14 Apr 2026 13:24:27
We've won 26 from 49 games this year despite being woefully unprepared in 90% of those games. Some magic trick. 🤔

1

14 Apr 2026 15:17:59
WDW I never said anything about how the head coach performed. Yes, he did have a very poor season, but if we get third place he has completed his remit given at the start of the season, and, taking into consideration how our season has run its course, you would have to give the man some congratulations to send him on his way.
YNWA.

0

13 Apr 2026 23:52:08
Apparently we are front runners for Traore and Hoffenheim want £37m. Both him and Diomande would solve our winger situation for years.

5

14 Apr 2026 05:52:14
Last player we signed from Hoffenheim for a bit less than 37 million did decent for us. 😂😂

14

As long as he isn't the second coming of Djimi Traore. 😅

3

14 Apr 2026 10:30:16
Decent price, but I would rather get someone more established rather than another youngster. I really do think that Rio has something special, so getting someone in their mid-20s, who already knows their craft, may be a better dovetail.

Annoys me even more that we didn't go for Semenyo, who has the perfect profile based on those criteria.

3

14 Apr 2026 13:04:00
They both look excellent prospects and slightly different in style. Yann Diomande is the better player as he's technically brilliant with both feet, but Bazoumana Toure has that really direct raw speed in behind.

I know he's struggled with injury this year, but I would still keep my eye out on a bargain deal for Malick Fofana.

2

13 Apr 2026 23:27:53
C'mon Slotty. Third place up for grabs. Let's stuff PSG tomorrow and go out on a high!

Ghosts of Anfield let's gooooo.

Just went and watched based on your comment, Cafu, and completely agree.

Slot has woken up. Seems like there's fire and belief there. Szobo was really good too.

Come on. I would love nothing more than to light an absolute fire tomorrow into our season.

Unlikely, very. Failure, almost certain. Impossible - would be - if this wasn't Anfield under the lights.

1% chance is enough for me to not give up on this. Let's go boys.

Fellas, ... PSG will score a couple of goals I'm afraid. I think the game will be a draw at best. A good effort, but too little, too late.

8

13 Apr 2026 20:50:47
I don't care if we lose. Never really have done. All I care about is the team trying their best, 100% effort in a practical and tactically astute way that suits the skills of the players and the context of the game. If we lose despite that, I'm fine with being beaten by a better team.

Ed025 am still not fully sold on PSG because I actually don't know how good they are.
Are they a top team Ed or is it everyone else is so bad I mean Chelsea destroyed them in the club World Cup and Chelsea are not very good at all.

Last season when we lost to them we was awful could not pass 5 yards but even so the home leg Salah had great chances to end the tie.
Then I thought Villa should have gone through at Villa park.

Some people choose to say "it is the hope that kills you".
But, that is exactly what being a football fan is all about.
PSG are a fantastic team and alongside Bayern, for me, the best in Europe.
Am I confident that Liverpool will make the semi finals? Not really.
Can Liverpool beat them, 2-0 at home in a Champions League game at Anfield? Of course they can.

How many of you thought Liverpool were out after losing 3-0 to Barcelona at Camp Nou?
How many of you thought Liverpool were done, 3-0 at half-time to Milan?
We won't know until this time tomorrow night, but the main thing is, between now and then, hopefully there's a cracking game of football to be had.

3

14 Apr 2026 08:34:35
Sem, in all fairness we had a team of fighters who wouldn't give up. Where do you see it in this team?

1

14 Apr 2026 10:51:29
Comparing what occurred in Istanbul or the second leg against Barca with tonight is false equivalence. In Istanbul, we had Gerrard leading by example and sheer bloody mindedness. Against Barcelona, Klopp inspired the team to go out and leave nothing on the pitch, and the team had some fight in it. This team has no Gerrard to lead from the front, and Slot is a charisma vacuum, and the team is mentally & physically weak, so the chances of him miraculously inspiring a turnaround are very unlikely.

The result against Fulham changes nothing as far as I'm concerned. The wider context is that we gave them far too much possession and allowed far too many chances (they had more shots than we did and almost as many on target). We were still woeful in midfield, and Fulham were able to stroll through midfield without so much as being pressed, let alone tackled. If we allow PSG that much freedom, they're not likely to be so profligate.

Call me crazy but I feel a slight wave of optimism for tomorrow night. An early goal would really light a spark and get Anfield rocking.
I'd be starting Robbo and Salah as it's potentially their last Champions League game for us and go hell for leather.

We gonna go through tomorrow... the lads are saving everything for the CL...

Like Aray would say... We will win!

Now say that whilst Eminem's "Lose Yourself" plays in the background... game on peeps. 💪

No.8, we shouldn't be starting players because it might be their last game in Europe. No time for sentiment.

Predict we start off well, but struggle to score.
PSG will hit us on the break around the 55-60 min mark.
We will rally and get one back, but then flatter to deceive.
1-1 on the night, 1-3 on aggregate.

"Comparing what occurred in Istanbul or the second leg against Barca with tonight is false equivalence."

VV, and this is where notalgia plays tricks on people, sadly.

Not saying we cannot go thru BUT let us stop with these out-of-context comparisons that mean nothing when context is added.
