The thing is, when we signed Kerkez and Frimpong everyone was chuffed. The best left back in the league and a flying right back with bags of pace. Both much younger than our previous fullbacks with lots of potential.

After one season where Frimpong was injured for its entirety, pretty much, and Kerkez struggled to settle (like the rest of the team last season) and suddenly everyone knew all along that they weren’t good enough and we’ve left the manager in the lurch.

Gini went missing for us all the time, even when he was in his prime. I always got the impression he was too arrogant to bother in a lot of games against lesser opposition, and too scared to get involved in the game away from home.

He always showed up in the big games at Anfield to be fair, which means he has a lot of iconic moments. But I think across his 5 year stint, he only scored 1 or 2 goals away from home. He was one of the few weak links in our “mentality monsters” side. That’s why Klopp tried to replace him 3 times with Ox, Keita and then Thiago.

Unfortunately, they all broke down with injuries and Gini’s best ability was availability, so somehow he always ended up on the team sheet year after year.

There is absolutely no sense in bringing him back now. He was never good enough in the first place. He did exactly what Curtis Jones got grief for doing (held onto the ball too long and invited pressure/slowed down our play), except he had better team mates around him, so he got away with it more.

Gini was absolutely fantastic for us the year we won the title, to be fair. He just had a very particular skillset that made him perfect for what he was instructed to do. I think I'd even go so far as to say that he was my favorite Liverpool player that year; it was a pleasure watching him receive in a crowd of opposition players and somehow wiggle through on the halfway line before dispatching it to somebody else.

{Ed001's Note - his problem was never ability, it was just that so often he played within himself. The only time he ever came close to reaching his actual potential was the Barca comeback, when he was angry at being left out. If he actually got himself pumped up like that, or close to it, every game, rather than just when he had a bee in his bonnet, he would have been on a totally different level. He had so much talent it used to drive me mad watching him play at 50-60% of his capability most of the time.}

When a club brings in a Milner, Welbeck, Ibrahimovic, Wijnaldum and so on, it blocks the development of a youth player. Iraola is here to work with the players, make them better and save us a lot of cash.

If McConnell, Rio, Nyoni and Koumas aren't good enough, so be it; it didn't have the same million-dollar effect on the budget.
Give the young ones a chance, they might take it.

Gini, sadly for me, was never a player who wanted the ball from our CBs. He constantly hid behind one of the opposition's players in our half so he wouldn't receive the ball facing our goal. He constantly left it to Hendo or Can to get the ball. Thankfully we got Fab and freed Hendo up from the 6 position.

He was strong on the ball when he needed to be. But passing range was not the required level and he didn't exactly always like doing the dirty work of tracking back.

Of the 3 mids he was pretty much always the weakest link...then we got Naby

Gini was so frustrating. I hate to use the term laidback, especially where Dutch players are concerned but I agree Ed01, he could and should have been so much more.

His ball retention was almost without peer. The only weakness in his game was mentality.

Agree Ed001. You probably worded it better than I did. In those big games at Anfield when he really got going he was excellent. Many a time he bossed teams like Man City, Arsenal, Man United, Barcelona etc at Anfield.

Then we'd play Huddersfield or Watford away and he'd be absolutely shocking. So often he just wasn't up for it. Was really frustrating to watch at times.

Marques is the senior talent spotter for young and up and coming players, Matt Newberry was involved as the Director of Global Talent and Julian Ward handled the business side of it regarding contracts and fee. Not saying it's true but Hughes has taken a lot of flak while he was apparently doing nothing. He has taken tonnes of abuse from us all.

All the while others were working on these deals and being lauded for getting them over the line. They did this with their heads below the parapet until the signings were being confirmed.

Maybe Hughes has been on garden leave all this time and others are to blame for delays. Perhaps we will never know the truth of it all.

Maybe FSG have played a blinder, having Hughes take the fall when he was already leaving the club.

- AS Monaco needed to make a sale to help resolve a debt issue and free up a non-EU squad spot to sign Mexican midfielder Erik Lira.

- Monaco agreed a deal to sell Folarin Balogun to Everton, but problems and doubts emerged during his medical and the transfer stalled.

- Chelsea then sensed an opportunity. With Enzo Fernandez heading to Manchester City, they went all-in for Lamine Camara as his replacement and reached an agreement with Monaco.

- Everton, meanwhile, turned to Joshua Zirkzee after the Balogun problems — but Manchester United refused to let him leave.

- With the deadline approaching, Everton returned for Balogun and attempted to renegotiate the deal on cheaper terms.

- Monaco preferred selling Balogun rather than Camara, so they pulled the plug on Camara’s move to Chelsea.



- Chelsea could have responded by cancelling Enzo Fernandez’s move to Manchester City. Instead, they honoured their agreement and allowed Enzo to leave — despite suddenly having no replacement.

- And then came the final twist… Balogun decided not to join Everton following the medical and negotiation drama, leaving the training centre without signing.

So after all of that…

- Monaco kept both Balogun and Camara, failed to raise the money they wanted and didn’t free up the non-EU spot needed for Erik Lira.

- Erik Lira therefore didn’t join Monaco.

- Chelsea lost Enzo Fernandez for a Premier League-record fee and missed out on his planned replacement, Camara.

- Everton missed out on both Balogun and Zirkzee. Having already sold Beto to Fiorentina, Thierno Barry is now their only recognised centre-forward.

My personal opinion is we wanted Camara, but couldn't free up the space. We naively thought all summer that someone would leave and we could sort it. It didn't happen and we left the door open for Chelsea. Hughes P.P.P., in my opinion.

If it wasn't for Everton buying the striker, he would be a Chelsea player.

It just so happens that the medical delayed matters, and he got cold feet, leaving Monaco in a mess.

However, the notion it was to do with us is adding 2+2 and getting 15. If it was even an ounce true, he would never have spoken to Chelsea originally and waited for us.

Nothing Monaco could do and they had to accept the player back. This is all according to Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro.

From our side, we've got Grav, Macca, Dom and Trey for 2 midfield spots. I would have brought in someone like Camara and carried 5 until we can sort a sale in Jan or next summer.

Unbelievable. As a club, we do a great job of holding onto players that provide minimal value.

I have to say, Klopp has bought the owners a lot of time and luck because without him I think we would have hounded the owners out a while ago.

Post Klopp, the decision making has been dreadful. What is simply unacceptable is that we are normalising losing at our club. The decision to stick with Slot in December tells everyone that we are a team where it is fine to be crap because stability is more important.

Now starting the season with a thin squad with a manager who likes to squeeze everything out of the players, we are now again accepting we can’t compete for major honours this season.

This mentality is a cancer in the club, I don’t use that word lightly.

More importantly now is getting the right balance in midfield. Signing Wirtz has messed up a title winning midfield (not his fault). We're basically playing 2 in midfield and don't have the warrior midfielders to play like that. Slot couldn't sort it. Can Iraola?

Not a great transfer window by any means of the imagination. It's going to be a stressful few months now as we watch a thin squad try and cope with new methods and two to three games a week.

One thing I'm hoping that we will look back on is the fact that we at least didn't panic buy average or mediocre players to fill gaps. As we know, it's a lot harder to get rid of players, it seems, than potentially buy new ones.

At least the way it's gone, we'll have time to evaluate the squad properly and really accentuate where the gaps are to hopefully then identify better impactful players in the January or summer transfer window.

Again, not ideal, but I was a bit concerned with the panic scene that was going on that we might end up bloating the squad with players that wouldn't really help us in the long term, so at least we haven't done that.

I feel as if it’s going to be a long wait until the January window.
We still have plenty to fix.

Let’s hope we get some luck with injuries and form. A few injuries to this squad are going to be devastating.

I think the club has decided we aren’t going to win the league and it’s going to be a transition season anyway, so it doesn’t see the need to try and fill in all the gaps this season with whoever is available now and is willing to wait until January or next summer to get the targets they really want so we can give it a good go next season.



That’s just me trying to be positive though and trying to put some logic behind a terrible window.

Some more positives though, I do think we have bought well, the new signings are all very good and promising, we just didn’t buy or sell enough.

We have the players to try to qualify for UCL next season. That's the sum of our club's ambition, obviously. Perhaps that's good enough for them, but it certainly isn't for me and a lot of other people here and beyond. Maybe the change in ownership that's upcoming will actually be for the best after all.

M Gordon should have played a bigger part in the transfer dealings imo. He knew the s***show that was happening all around him and let it happen when he could have taken the lead. Iraola deserved better, as did we.

However, it doesn't mask over the transfer capabilities of our team, where other clubs effortlessly shift and buy 100s of millions worth of players and we seem to leave ourselves so thin and have players nobody wants.

Pray the good players we have want to sign extensions, because you couldn't blame them for looking elsewhere when their contracts run down at this rate.

This just brings about a sense that there is no competition for those regular starters, so no need for them to put the required extra effort.

I'll agree we need a couple more but everyone makes it out to be like we don't have a team to compete. Recruitment is not the problem; it's the mentality and the team balance in the system.

We have world class players that still didn't gel or reach their peak. Isak, Wirtz, Ngumoha, Barcola, Szobo. We have the title winning players Gakpo, Grave, Macca. We have great upgrades in defence with Jacquet and Araujo. We have our veterans in Van Dijk and Alisson.

We have the young threat in Munoz and Nyoni. The only weak links are Frimpong and Kerkez. Ofc we need to upgrade also Macca and Grave as we need more bite but I don't think it's the disaster everyone makes it out to be.

We have a stellar attack that needs to hit the engine and a defence that needs to wake up. For me we have title winning players they just need to become a team in Iraola's system.

Wirtz up top when Isak gets injured, with a solid MF 3 behind him including Trey and Szob in the 10. Szob should not be playing CM, he is not mature of mind enough - yes he grafts hard but he lacks discipline and loves the Hollywood. RB, RM or ten for him only IMO.

@MrJones: Both Barcola and Munoz can play RW. I guess the point of buying Munoz was for his versatility since we expected Gakpo to be sold.

So you can have Barcola LW, with Ngumoha as his understudy, and Munoz on RW, with many players taking over when needed, including Gakpo.

There is proper depth in the squad apart from RB/LB, and we need desperately an upgrade on a holding midfielder.

In the current setup we can last easily up until January, and in 2027, when Macca leaves, we can upgrade our midfield (and hopefully the RW since Frimpong is not good enough).

We also have a year to assess Nyoni and Ngumoha without hampering their playing minutes.

We are not Chelsea, who buys players for fun. Had we bought Minteh or Mbaye then where does this leave Munoz or Ngumoha?

I prefer we buy Sarr and have these 2 develop with lots of game minutes instead of buying another RW first team young player who won't let them get minutes.

Interesting to hear the PSG president saying the Barcola deal got over the line due to Mike Gordon and also Amit Bhatia also played a part at the end. So basically Hughes stumbled and bumbled and didn't get a mention.
