I wrote to FSG yesterday in particular, big JWH.

I grassed everyone up. Hughes Edwards, & Slot.

I'm on a mission. When he replies I'm going to tell what's going on here in little old England. When he finds out.

Discuss.

I know John W Henry loves old school musicals, so I sent him a barbershop quartet to sing "Mmmm Slot and Hughes Are Bad".

I've just read that if Liverpool finish 6th in the PL, there is still a way we can qualify for next season's Champions League (and not by us winning it this year). Anyone want to have a guess how?

2

08 Apr 2026 12:55:16
By Villa winning the Europe League.

1

08 Apr 2026 13:01:26
And what if Arsenal win the CL and PL while Villa win the EL?

Does that get us in at 6th? Not sure about that.

0

08 Apr 2026 13:53:24
Yep, it's Villa.. if they win EL and finish outside the top 4.. or 5.. can't remember what they said now...

I think England can get 7 if Forest win too.

I think England teams won't win anything in Europe tbh.. now at the business end so the elite clubs are left r...

Wouldn't be surprised if RM still did a number on Bayern tbh.

0

08 Apr 2026 14:01:12
Don't tell Slot that... Don't need another scenario for us to not put an effort in on our league table standings...

0

08 Apr 2026 14:19:08
Great news for Chelsea and Everton, but I'm not sure we need to concern ourselves with talk of finishing 5th.

1

08 Apr 2026 15:18:28
Unbelievable we're behind the worst City team in years, an awful Utd team who binned off a clueless manager, and a Villa team who can't spend money and had to sell their best players the last few windows.

Also add in Chelsea, who are also probably their worst team in years and 2 managers in, and Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Sunderland, Newcastle and Bournemouth only a few wins behind us.

CL qualification by any means would definitely paper over the cracks of what could likely be Liverpool's lowest league points tally in 10 years.

Michael Olise? Yes please! That Pavlovic in the Munich midfield was great too.

5

08 Apr 2026 12:05:08
Yeah, Olise is definitely my pick for the wing. We need more players who can be on the wavelength with how Wirtz plays.

08 Apr 2026 12:12:31
My partner is from Gisborne and he says you're right about the kickoff time.

08 Apr 2026 12:40:19
Ok chur.
Lol.

08 Apr 2026 13:02:15
That whole Bayern team is a well-oiled machine from top to bottom. What a performance!

1

08 Apr 2026 13:07:58
High five!

1

08 Apr 2026 10:21:19
Just watched the Real vs Bayern game and what a game of football!

Serious show of baller's on that pitch and love to see Luis getting the credit he deserves. What a miss that guy is to our attack.

Kiimmich ran that game, and Thiago is a special kid apart from the fluff to the keeper. Be great to play either in the next . c'mon the boys in the morning, feeling the 05 magic .

7

08 Apr 2026 11:20:09
I told my wife before the City game that I had the worst feeling we are getting embarrassed, and sadly I feel tonight will be worse.

3

08 Apr 2026 11:31:22
Will watch in hope. But I'm not overly confident.

I imagine PSG will go all out tonight to end this tie in one leg.

6

08 Apr 2026 11:44:08
It's certainly not going to be pretty lads.

4

08 Apr 2026 12:30:34
Totally agree, but regarding Diaz, but a lot of people here seem to think Gakpo was better than Diaz. Diaz is a baller, while Gakpo is, at best, a second-tier player. We do miss him.

1

08 Apr 2026 13:03:42
KiwiCrouch25, that Bayern team is off the charts. They put out a clinic of attacking play, pressing, hard work and completely ran their socks off. Brilliant!

As for us v PSG, hold hands and pray.

Football is miles away from what the quality overall was year's ago. One good ball across a box is "sensational". A quick bit of play is "Sensational". The media and pundits have to over hype it all to sell the product.
Player's thought as " World class ". In this modern day aren't a patch on Worldclass what came before.
It's a game in moment's now that makes player's. Most player's consistent play in the top tier is seriously lacking.
There's a shortage of top centre backs in world football. Different media age so probably lack of concentration. Hour's of scrolling media content compared to year's ago.
The midfielders considered superstars do nothing of note for most of the game and season. Bellingham who's done little for two years now, scores the very odd goal.

Lampard did that in his sleep and far more consistently yet this lad's seen as a superstar. He and Dom compared to Gerrard. Again their overall games not a patch on Gerrard.
Our own game has made me fed up. Overpaid football player's playing awful football. But the quality now seen to be as truly great player is ludicrous.
Yamal is a fantastic player but his attitude is on the brink of causing real issue's. Different age now. Social media to give these people false god images, ego knows no bound and a real lack of leader's now in the game to pull player's down a peg or two.
We're being sold a substandard product now all around and being asked to contribute more towards it.

Had to check it was Ron Funk. I thought it was Ee Aw from Winnie-the-Pooh.

3

08 Apr 2026 11:12:38
I agree with you @Ron, but to be fair the "commentators" aren't going to have a job for long if they described what is actually happening (especially in the PL) rather than romanticising a pass of 5 to 10 yards.

5

08 Apr 2026 11:20:21
Well summed up, Ron.

3

08 Apr 2026 11:31:48
Good post, Ron.

3

08 Apr 2026 11:37:51
If you can get a radio commentary to synch with a TV game, the hype is all too apparent.
That amazing, sensational, or sublime breakaway coinciding with the commentator's change of pitch as he describes how they're approaching the penalty area, but all you're seeing is they've got all 11 behind the ball and you've barely crossed the halfway line.

1

08 Apr 2026 11:48:15
Was thinking the same thing, RF, but man, Kemlyncat the Eeaw quip was funny.

1

08 Apr 2026 12:16:53
Ron, I think part of the reason defenders n midfilders esp aren't as good as yesteryear is because the modern game tries to make them do more than they're actual jobs, they got to play intricate passes, don't tackle or just clear the ball into row Z, look who makes the most passes every game for us, it's the CBs, the coaches trying to make them like midfilders passing the ball out, I remember Souness coming back and taking the ball off them to start the moves n the defenders defended, midfilders knew their positions, now we have the dreaded horseshoe formations etc.

3

08 Apr 2026 13:07:51
Ron, that has been the case for years now. This isn't new. I mean, look at a guy like Garnacho. A totally dreadful player (imo), but came to prominence via a moment vs Everton with an impressive bicycle kick.

Suddenly, he is this outstanding player with no dribbling ability, no tech. on the ball, very little end product etc. Just pace and lots of running. Man's still living off that "moment" till this day.

2

08 Apr 2026 13:24:32
I like your post, Ron.

So after Arsenal won last night, it's confirmed the PL will indeed get the fifth place CL spot.

Bet FSG must be breathing a sigh of relief, but I wouldn't suggest holding your breath!

6

08 Apr 2026 09:19:45
A sigh of relief? On the current form Liverpool won't get 5th. I would not be confident at all, and I don't think they should be.

9

08 Apr 2026 09:33:55
I said it earlier, I would love to be proved wrong, but I see us finishing 7th or even 8th.

6

08 Apr 2026 09:38:58
I've still got a feeling, if we get top 5 & a CL spot, Slot will see us into the new season.

Edwards & Hughes will come out with the "transition season" scenario.

0

08 Apr 2026 11:02:54
Not worried about that at all, Bristol_Red, Slot can't get a win to save his bacon in the PL. He is a Gonner!

2

08 Apr 2026 11:35:05
England will have 5 teams in there next season, who will all get good seeding, and they will then steam roll European minnows due to the seeding fixtures, and fans worldwide will claim every other league is a farmers' league. It will come to the knock out stages, and PL teams will be dumped out again before the final.

4

08 Apr 2026 11:36:55
Awesome. Another chance to secure CL next season.

Slot or not, at this stage, surely earning CL at the least is what we want, no?

2

08 Apr 2026 13:08:29
And where will the wins we need be coming from to get 5th?

1

08 Apr 2026 13:21:10
Win the 4 home games Oli, that should have us getting 5th.

1

08 Apr 2026 14:19:33
It's a funny one, as Chelsea have flirted with CL one season & Europa the next, but they are a basket case of a club, but still seem to be there or thereabouts.

I'm of the opinion that the need for CL is crucial for our development & attracting the quality of players we need to challenge for the top titles.

I'll be majorly disappointed if we don't get top 5, but like I said earlier, my view is if Slot gets a CL spot it'll be him seeing us into next season!

08 Apr 2026 06:49:09
Well, I am looking forward to tomorrow morning's game.

Yes sir, 7am kick off down under woohoooooo and I am on leave for the school holidays.

Me and the little ones will be up, well not the littlest 2 year old, but the 11 and 7 yr old for sure.

Ready for another match of hope and maybe despair lol.

Seriously tho, in all the years I've ben supporting and able to watch games regularly, I've enjoyed these periods almost as much as when the football has been good.

Perhaps I am a glutton for punishment, but in times like these I enjoy watching more for the psychology of the team, the players and how they're going to get themselves back on track.

I fear the worst, but am picking a defiant away performance that I hope returns us a score draw or one goal difference either way.

That'd be positive heading back to Anfield next week.

C'mon lads, another opportunity to fight for the shirt!

14

08 Apr 2026 07:19:40
I wish I had your enthusiasm, I expect another laboured underwhelming performance.

10

08 Apr 2026 07:40:19
I am just praying for an upset. We catch them on an off day, Dom scores a world-class free kick from 30 yards, get out of Paris with a 0-1 win!

Look at 2005. You can win the Champions League as the underdog. In a cup competition, crazier things have happened.

It's the hope that kills you, though. We'll probably get battered 5-0.

https://www.rangersrumours.co.uk/images/Ed0041.png avatar{Ed078's Note - Australia time I have a 6.24am tee off time. So, after watching the first half I'll either turn up in an optimistic mood, expecting to beat my best score, or I'll be the grumpiest player in the group.
Actually, that's not true, my expectations are at a 3 year low, so won't let it phase me.

5

08 Apr 2026 07:53:03
"I've enjoyed these periods almost as much as when the football has been good."

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. I find this one very odd. But hey.

3

08 Apr 2026 08:17:24
I think a big difference to 2005 is the team is better now, but has no heart or motivation currently. That team in 2005 had the will to want to win and do better than they were.

Not to mention a captain in Gerrard who always gave everything every match.

Stranger things have happened, but I think our chance of winning the Champions League is less than 1%.

08 Apr 2026 08:34:55
The alternation of a high press and a low block (and not this passive style that we have with a super weak front press and a passive mid block) that we deployed against Madrid will work against PSG. They struggle against low blocks just as we do and have also found it hard to cope with teams that engage them aggressively high up the field. We need a proactive off the ball plan, either be brave and press, squeeze them into the wide areas high up, or drop back, concentrate and defend as a unit, keep it compact.

I feel like the off the ball plan is the biggest key as to how much of a chance we have in the game. On the ball it's just a matter of keeping a cool head, not having heads drop when you miss a chance, stay in the game and don't rush or scuff at chances, believe you can score the next one, because PSG will give you chances. They aren't a defensively watertight team and can cough up possession in their own half or get caught on the counter. Use the wide spaces effectively with the fullbacks, get them to engage in the press high up, Against Chelsea, PSG gave them lots of joy out wide.

Most importantly, don't give up once PSG score, because they will definitely score. They might even score early. This is where I feel most despondent because Slot just isn't the coach to pick the team up when they're feeling low. PSG are a frightening team at the best of times, against Chelsea their last 5 goals were scored on 5 consecutive shots, not having missed a single one. It can happen that they make something out of nothing, don't give up when that happens. Just put in a resolute off the ball performance, focus, and be on the same wavelength as your team mates, and believe in your quality on the ball, because we do have that.

I know we all think we don't have a chance in hell, but the performance in Madrid is a blueprint for how we can survive this game. Let's hope the players' heads haven't gone and Slot has a similar blueprint for how we can advance in this competition.

4

08 Apr 2026 09:04:06
We can win if we set up tactically to expose their weakness which PSG do have. They don't have a proper 9 who will cause problems in the penalty box, so if we force them to have to put in crosses then we will not concede many big chances. This means Gomez and Robbo should be fb to tuck in. Make it narrow, and force them wide. Dembele should not be beating Virgil and Konate in an aerial battle. Close down shooting from range opportunity from Vitinha and Neves, and we do have tools to punish them when we attack.

Salah is unfortunately not one of those tools. Last season he was pocketed by Mendes and got absolutely no joy from him. If we get out of there with nothing more than a one goal deficit, it's a decent result. A draw or a narrow win is excellent. If we stay focused for the full 90+ we could get a good result, but Slot is not a tactical manager. He's just not good enough to instruct the team properly.

3

08 Apr 2026 09:12:44
I have a bet on PSG - hardly ever bet against us, that is how bad it is. My youngest will wake up early - I am going to enjoy my bed and winnings when I wake up.

1

08 Apr 2026 09:29:10
I'm guessing the original poster lives in Perth? My kick off time is 5am so I could get up and watch it before I go to work? Having just given up nicotine 6 days ago, I'm not sure my nerves could take seeing us get beaten 4-0 again.

I might just watch the highlights later when I get a break. Should be a short day tomorrow at least.
Hope we at least have something to play for at Anfield next leg.

7

08 Apr 2026 09:33:24
Never ever bet against your team.

2

08 Apr 2026 09:46:34
Nah, NZ

SSSS - I do go on to expand on what I mean by that.

2

08 Apr 2026 09:47:56
@Faithinworks, better double check your kick-off time, mate. I'm in WA, and here it starts at 3am. There's no way you are 5 hours ahead of Perth.

1

08 Apr 2026 10:13:44
Darwin, I think you'll find NZ is 5 hours ahead of Perth. I'm in QLD, I'm 3 hours ahead of you, depending on daylight saving time. NZ is 2 or 3 hours ahead of me.

08 Apr 2026 10:21:55
When I first came to Australia in 1987, I was confused because I'd read that there was 30 minutes difference between Sydney and Brisbane so I asked a young lady, who was working on the same team as me, what time it was in Queensland and she replied 1952. Still makes me chuckle.

3

08 Apr 2026 11:38:43
We just had daylight savings end. Anyways, it's 7am NZ time. Chur!

2

08 Apr 2026 11:50:44
Don't forget to get up early on Sat, gents, for the planned Fulham match ticket price increase protests.

1

08 Apr 2026 12:23:25
Agree with Taurus, we have better players than in 2005, but that team had heart n fight, sadly missing from this team... but hoping they put a performance in tonight.

1

08 Apr 2026 13:11:09
Indeed, Strom. We had winners, experienced guys who had won things, coached by a manager who was a winner, and knew how to win in Europe, tactivally.

A far cry from the ship show we have right now.

2

08 Apr 2026 13:28:24
We had winners, experienced guys who had won things, coached by a manager who was a winner

I'm guessing you chose not to watch last season as well, Oli.

1

07 Apr 2026 23:54:58
It wasn't perfect but Bayern were a joy to watch tonight. Really slick around the box, creating chances.

Man, such a joy to see electric wingers. It creates absolute havoc and one of the most fun things to watch in football is flying wingers.

Mane and Salah. My God. We were so lucky. And Diaz and Salah last year.

Hopefully under a new manager we can bring back:
Wingers
Press
And lots of fight.

Isak could be key next year too. More to come from him.

We need a RB too, of course, and a DM, but we are not a million miles away.

My only hope for remainder of season is to qualify for Champions League. And make the right moves with the right manager.

18

08 Apr 2026 01:07:39
Agreed, Davey, we have nothing going on out wide at the moment. Although I did call for it earlier in the season, as I believed it was the best option to strengthen our weak midfield, I've got little confidence in the 4-4-2 as our go to formation next season, considering our 2 forwards are injury prone and need minutes managed, not to mention we're lacking adequate backup for a 2 striker set up.

I'm really not mad about all our width coming from the full backs either, it limits attacking options from out wide, makes us less dynamic and more predictable, I feel. I think we need to heavily invest in 2 pacey skilful wingers. We're very much missing that danger that comes from somebody who's a real menace in the half spaces.

2

08 Apr 2026 02:03:27
End to end game, good to watch. Much better watch than the average PL snoozefest this season. Bayern slick going forward, but can't see them winning much with that liability Upamecano at the back. Thank God he extended his contract.

5

08 Apr 2026 06:28:49
Would be good if the transfer people bring in good wingers for the manager.

1

08 Apr 2026 06:47:19
What a ball by Trent for Real's goal btw. We've missed that kind of delivery.

And, given the defending this season, Diaz just running past him for the opener wouldn't really be that out of place this season. At least we'd get the passing hahahah.

3

08 Apr 2026 07:21:24
Agreed, Davey, I have been saying this for months. We need pacey widemen desperately, as we are toothless up top without that speed and chaos. All the play is in front of teams, get fast, direct wingers and all that changes.

4

08 Apr 2026 08:26:52
This team as we are now, with Slot as manager, would be totally different with fast direct wingers. Saying it all season. We have had zero dangers from the widemen this season. Young Rio has been about the only one who can beat a man.

0

08 Apr 2026 09:16:05
We need to reverse what Slot moans about, and use the low block, keep them at bay, and get them back to Anfield with 0-0, or 1-0, or God willing a 0-1. I wish the boys all the luck in the world tonight YNWA.

1

08 Apr 2026 09:29:51
This team as we are now, with Slot as manager, would be largely the same even with fast direct wingers. We'd still be soft in midfield and easy to play through.

3

08 Apr 2026 10:06:07
I more mean, Victor, that even without changing the manager fast direct wingers would make a huge difference to this team. People were talking about wingers. Everyone knows there are plenty of problems, but lack of threat from out wide is certainly one of them.

You can be sure that, no matter who's in charge next season, the winger situation will be addressed this summer to help him.

0

08 Apr 2026 11:39:45
Fast direct wingers won't make a difference in a team that intentionally plays slow indirect football.

2

08 Apr 2026 13:13:03
Red_Flyer69, it was a great game and Bayern put out some really great stuff creatively and defensively in terms of their hard running and pressing.

But like you, that Upamecano fellow is diabolically shocking. Not sure how he gets a game ahead of the South Korean Lee Ming Jae, personally. Dreadful CB.

0

08 Apr 2026 13:28:21
Well we'd actually have some fast and direct players in the attacking third for one, Chewy. I'm sure that while Slot is here someone could say it'd be great to have Mbappe upfront and someone would have a reason why it would be a waste of time.

1

08 Apr 2026 15:06:55
Faith, yea a good ball by the Spanish Judas, we know he can do that, we also know he was at fault on the Diaz goal, he was in dreamland, think about the Balon d'Or.

0

07 Apr 2026 21:03:55
Terrible timing but flying home to Ireland from Australia and stopping in Liverpool to catch my first ever match against Fulham. I plan to make the most of it regardless of the mood in the city. Where can I go on match day for a pint with supporters?

6

07 Apr 2026 21:47:50
The Arkles
The Sandon
The Albert

Any establishment with The at the beginning. Enjoy the match. 🇮🇪

6

07 Apr 2026 23:08:38
Never a bad time to visit! Embrace it and enjoy it, lad! The Sandon for me every time! Before and after for a sing song!

3

08 Apr 2026 09:19:00
MoSalad 11, don't worry about the mood in Liverpool, best place in the world for a night out.
Have great time and enjoy your stay. YNWA.

2

08 Apr 2026 11:05:33
Thanks, lads. Don't worry, I'm going to be grinning ear to ear win, lose or draw. Appreciate the recommendations. The Sandon might be the shout. 😀
