Nice read, Ed. Regarding Palmer, it was an absolute disgrace that he did not get sent off the first time after banging his thigh into Fernandez's head why still on the ground and got the yellow instead.
As for our result, I thought we took the fight to them from the off and Brighton wasn't ready for it. We were on the front foot, aggressive in transition and got the ball forward quickly every time we got. This is because Brighton committed 6/7 bodies forward, which left them short at the back which made them vulnerable when they lost the ball.
We played well, were dogged out of possession and BHA couldn't break us down. We let them have the ball while at the same time controlling the game as in, dictating where Brighton would pass it into areas which wouldn't hurt us. It was possession for nothing, really for Brighton.
Geat perf. and hats off to the players and Iraola, esp.

A win is a win. Next round at home to Bournemouth will be tough as they are in real form, but its a great chance to go to the semifinals. Man City home to Bradford, of course they are, was going to be them of Fleetwood. Mind you with a bit of luck that will be a league game for them next season.
29 Oct 2026 00:38:08
Very entertaining again, a shoot out and Joey scores the winner and we move on to a cup QF. I await the usual update on who had a bad game, why they had a bad game and how soon they should be sold.
In the meantime, I enjoyed another entertain match with the penalty shot out a great piece of drama and it's . Bring on Arsenal.

I thought it was a decent performance that was a really competitive game both teams just lacked that but of quality in the final third.
I love Araujo and Nyoni looked a baller, the kid has class.

29 Oct 2026 06:44:26
I haven't been so excited by a penalty shootout in a long time. Since the last time (which was against Chelsea too), in fact. People were asking why Tsimikas took the 5th penalty? The only thing i can think of, was that he was 5th in the last shootout too and won it for us.
The game was bleh. I could comment on Iraola's team selection but I'd rather keep quiet and let him do his thing. He knows best. And we won.
Agree5
29 Oct 2026 07:35:17
Tsimikas Was captin a few games ago so he has obviously stepped up to be counted. He's not the best player in the world but he clearly love the club.
Agree7
29 Oct 2026 08:53:08
Chelsea keeper was trying to play mind games by delaying the kicks and i actually loved Tsimikas cockiness by juggling the ball, unfortunately he then skied the pen. Bigger and betetr players have missed pens well before him.
I'm more concerned over his performances to date this season rather than a missed pen in a shoot out. If he had scored it then i'd still be concerned.
He clearly loves the club but i fully see him, Endo and Chiesa moving on sooner rather than later to create more non homegrown spaces.
Agree6
28 Oct 2026 19:21:20
Endo and Chiesa can't even get a start in the Carabao Cup. This is why you can't just take a punt on a player no matter how cheap they might be. If it doesn't work out you can be stuck with them for years.
28 Oct 2026 19:33:24
In fairness to Endo he's started 44 games in his time at the club and is on significantly lower wages to Chiesa who has managed 9 starts.
Chiesa has 51 appearances though and 1, 185 mins so the equivalent of 13 games and Endo has 87 appearances and 4, 079 minutes so the equivalent of 45 games.

They must be so far off the pace in training to be overlooked tonight.
Agree4
28 Oct 2026 22:29:26
It's a competition we have a rich history in, against a premier team who don't have Europe to worry about, so was always going to be a difficult tie. Stop fretting about squad players, I'm sure they'll be fine.
Agree3
28 Oct 2026 23:18:41
If Camara and Minteh were to come in the winter transfer window for example, endo and chiesa could be replaced from the non home grown limit of 17 players? for the two new winter transfer signings, two out, two in? Two signings in the January Transfer Window could make all the difference, together with Hugo, what a statement that would send out?
Strange tonight that Chelsea only had enough players for 7 substitutes on the bench, while LFC had the full quota of 9 players on the bench?

Good line up but I want to see Araujo at CB. I want to see how he fares in his natural position.
28 Oct 2026 19:27:33
BBC Sport think he is. They have Araujo at CB with Virg and JoGo at RB, so you may get your wish!
Agree3
28 Oct 2026 19:27:54
You are aware he played CB in the champs league? Andoni subbed him and other CB off and we started conceding goals.
Agree2
28 Oct 2026 19:42:19
Hopefully zed because it may show us whether he will be worth the fee or now. I think we need to see him play CB domestically a good few times to see what we really have on our hands.
Full metal. I'm aware.
Agree0
28 Oct 2026 20:05:49
To be fair, we have paid £30m and £45m on full backs in the last 2 windows. Paying £47m (or lower as Ed0666 is confident we will negotiate a lower fee) on a RB who is proven in our team and is also a top level CB wouldn't put me off.
Agree4
28 Oct 2026 20:57:10
Zeddicus and have they been good enough?
Frimpong will be moved on and Kerkez needs serious competition.
Agree1
29 Oct 2026 04:56:04
Endo made a very important contribution and as well worth signing. Granted he wasn't first choice and wasn't exactly a spring chicken when we bought him, but we'd have been in a much worse position if we didn't sign him. He's been good
Chiesa hasn't worked out. But he had a good song and it was fun for a bit
Spent 25 mill on the 2 of them combined. We will live.
Agree0
29 Oct 2026 13:07:52
Ron, my point was we have spent this money on full backs (and don't even start on how much Cheaty spent a few years back on multiple full backs all at higher prices) that either haven't worked out (like Frimpong) and where the jury is still out (Kerkez - he's got every opportunity to improve as he's now working with the manager who turned him into a £45-£50m full back).
So spending up to £47m on a player who has really impressed as a RB (even if he could't play as a top level CB as well, thus flexibility) isn't an issue for me. It's kinda the market rate these days, unless you want to take a bit of a gamble and/or have space for special case Work Permit.
Agree0
28 Oct 2026 11:05:29
There is so much praise on the site about Araujo and well deserved. However I still think the best signing for us has to be Jeremy Jacquet. He has the potential to be a superstar and take over the mantle of VVD.
28 Oct 2026 11:19:17
Jacquet's performances have been of a very high level.
Pesonally i don't think all of Araujo's performances have been good but his effort levels and how he wears his heart on his sleeve deserves all the praise he is getting.
Agree14
28 Oct 2026 11:31:07
There's no doubt about Jacquet's quality he's been superb.
There will be tougher times ahead. At some point a weakness will be targeted and he will have to deal with that and overcome it.
I'm sure he can, but he will have tougher times and we must not get down on him, he will need support.
Agree8
28 Oct 2026 11:45:41
I was advocating to sign him over Guehi in January but I had no idea he was this good. He's so mature for his age and his awareness of danger is a breath of fresh air. The way he's telling his team mates where to be, how he reads the forward's presses and the intention he puts on his forward passes. Brilliant so far!
If Leoni and Ndukwe can follow Jacquet's example, we are so spoiled at CB.
Agree15
28 Oct 2026 12:02:04
Jaquet has been more impressive for me. He is more in control. Araujo gets the crowd up with his tackles but if one is even slightly mistimed he's a walking red.
Agree6
28 Oct 2026 12:13:54
Araujo, Jacquet, Leoni (assuming he fully recovers from his injury) and Ndukwe all look like absolutely brilliant signings (plus we signed other very highly rated youngsters) and the latter 3 could all play for us for the next decade! I'm starting to get excited about the potential rather than fearing the worst about what will happen post VVD.
Agree6
28 Oct 2026 12:55:46
I think we should all write to the club and request that they do all that they can to get Richard Hughes back.
Agree8
28 Oct 2026 13:14:03
Both have impressed me massively. Extremely happy with both.
I was worried about Araujo when he signed because his form had dipped and he was very injury prone.
I pray the injuries stay away. Still a worry for me.
But on the form side, he has bounced right back to his best in our system. I did not expect such an immediate bounce. He just seems to be a character that feeds off love and fans. We give him that, I think he would be willing to die out there for us. He is without doubt an emotional trigger in the team. Amazing start and looking like an absolute bargain.
Agree4
28 Oct 2026 13:32:50
Jacquet is absolute class, he is almost always in the right place every single time, and even when he gets beat he has the pace to recover and get goalside to intervene. He is always looking to play the ball forward, and has the skill to fizz one to feet, he is great in the air, plus he can carry the ball if you need him to.
The guy is always in control, he always looks like he knows exactly what he is doing.

We should do one of our polls. Put up his list of signings(16 names I seen the other day)and posters can yay or nay on each name and we get a percentage like Rotten Tomatoes. I think it would be a surprisingly high percentage.
Agree1
{Ed033's Note - For a poll, i need a question and the possible voting options.
28 Oct 2026 16:07:45
FM, I am not sure ranking/rating the signings made would tell the whole Richard Hughes story which also includes priority positions being ignored, player profiles not matching the coach's tactics and fluffing a few deals due dithering.
Agree1
28 Oct 2026 16:18:03
Well this summer we got a CB, a CB that can play RB. Speedy hardworking wingers as well. MF was the one balls up but then plenty of fans were happy with our options. Guehi was unlucky for me and we should have got Semenyo if we could. But no club gets everything perfect.
I'd imagine as far as signings go if we did a poll with a list of the 16 players and told people to erase the names they were not happy with a lot of people would still have double figures left. Thats not too bad surely.
Agree1
28 Oct 2026 16:31:00
Also proves I-Boo Konate was conning the LFC supporters for a whole season and even worse getting selected every week also for nothing of defensive merit.
He even took an LFC defensive record with him when his good riddance arrived, last season was the worst defensive record for goals conceded in a "Premier League" season at 53 goals for LFC.
YNWA Andoni.

28 Oct 2026 16:32:07
I post a lot of stuff just to agitate. However, in the case of Hughes, a lot of the stick he got was over the top and unjustified. Some of it was valid. Some of it was because there are a few on here who are like sheep and like to follow the flock.
Agree3
{Ed666's Note - in my eyes he failed because he didn’t build a squad he accumulated players. There’s a distinction.

Just think we nearly bought Yoro.
Agree2
{Ed666's Note - Bullet dodged.
28 Oct 2026 16:42:56
I actually think if Yoro had come to us it would have been different for him. Was doing ok for United until his"captain"threw him under the bus vs City last season. Still very young, I think there's a player there.
Agree0
{Ed666's Note - I think JJ is twice the player. So glad we didn’t get him.
28 Oct 2026 16:51:09
I think Yoro's a decent player.
Agree0
28 Oct 2026 17:02:30
I think Yoro is a good player too. He was badly advised and now has to stick it out in that s-hole of a club.
In case anyone is in doubt, Hughes was throwing random bids in for Ismaila Sarr at the end of the window. :)
Agree4
28 Oct 2026 17:10:55
JJ is definitely better. But then JJ looks like he could end up another Saliba so far. So your talking the top top end of CB's. Yoro is indeed a bit below maybe but think he will still end up having a fine career.
Agree0
28 Oct 2026 17:33:13
Ed0666, he didn't address areas where we are weak, that is for sure. However, in the case of Jacquet, Munoz and Araujo he needs commending. In the case of Wirtz, only time will tell. In the case of Barcola and Isak, I think we're slowly getting there.
No Sporting Director gets it right all the time.
Agree0
{Ed666's Note - Mate he spent 700 million British pounds and we’re still short of a midfielder, right winger and a right back. For me that’s criminal and unforgivable.
28 Oct 2026 18:39:47
I'm playing devil's advocate here, Ed. Could it have been that in the case of centre mid, Iraola wanted to look at what we had? In the case of RB we've got Bradley, Frimpong, Gomez and Araujo. In the case of right winger we've got Barcola, Gakpo, Munoz and Rio, who Iraola likes to interchange. Therefore, we don't need a specific right winger.
I don't necessarily agree with what I'm saying, but I'm putting forward a case for why we started the season with what we've got.
Agree1
{Ed666's Note - we tried signing Minteh so we did go in for a right winger. I think Rio doing a job on the right has been luck rather than design..As long as we get a midfielder in Jan and I think we’ll get Camara I’ll be happy. Then we can renovate in the summer. We don’t need that much for us to be a squad to challenge on all fronts next season.
28 Oct 2026 18:56:57
I enjoy these debates, Ed.
I'd love us to get Camara in January, as well.

@666, perhaps AI saw the potential for Rio having an impact on the right? AI's job title is a bit of a giveaway. Seems a bit more plausible that a new coach arrives and Rio's starting taking steps in fulfilling the potential he had / has or maybe it was a lucky coincidence 😉.

Starting lineup predictions for tonight?
I think it'll be
Marma
Araujo Gomez Jacquet Tsimikas
Nyoni McConnell
Rio Mac Munoz
Koumas
Maybe Endo could potentially play at CB or RB?
Would like to see Araujo get a rest tbh.
28 Oct 2026 10:59:23
I'd put out a strong team, win the game. Sub tired players off during the game. We don't play again until Sunday.
• next round is the QF.
• next opponents from:
- Bradford
- Fleetwood
- 114 City or Brighton
- Bournemouth or Villa
- Fulham or Palace
- Sunderland or Brentford
- Everton or Newcastle
A win here, a favourable QF draw and suddenly you're in a 2 legged SF.

He might use Gomez at rb and Endo at cb.
I would be tempted to give both Jacquet and Araujo a half at cb each, I think they both need a rest.
Will Munoz be fit to play?

Chelsea aren't in Europe so won't be going weak and despite suggestions they are having an awful season are only 1 place and 2 points off Liverpool who aren't having an awful season.
Too many changes and not taking this seriously will likely result in Chelsea being in the QF draw sadly.
Personally i hope AI boxes clever with this and goes quite strong (sorry Taurus mate but stronger than what you suggest) because Sunday is also a massive game.

{Ed666's Note - rest em all and play the kids
28 Oct 2026 12:58:26
We've absolutely got to have the mindset of winning every competition we enter. There can be no other way. But, and it's a big but, player management is a crucial aspect of it, as everyone knows. Somehow find the right balance and player selections from the squad of 25.
Chelsea is not going to let us walk over them. So Iraola should choose his players accordingly.

Id go
Marma

Nyoni. Macca

Id hold Isak back. Still worried on the injury front and overloading him.
I think we need to go strong.
Agree3
28 Oct 2026 13:40:16
Iraola could be damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.
Imagine if he goes strong and Jaquet or Araujo gets injured? Or both. He'd be criticised for playing them in a nothing competition and jeopardising our league form.
Then if he plays the kids and loses (like Slot did last season) he'll be criticised for disrespecting the fans who have made the effort to go to the stadium.
That's the problem when you get a tough draw at this stage of the competition. You can't go too weak because you'll get hammered but you don't want to risk losing key players to injury.
I think he'll do a bit of both and be guided by the sports science people as to who needs a rest. I'd much rather start strong and make subs than start weak and bring big hitters on later but then the ideal scenario is to rest them and end up not needing them at all.
It's a tough balancing act tonight.
Agree3

No Palmer (Suspension) Martinez the first choice goal keeper had an operation for a fractured jaw on the 18 October so he's out, Pedro centre forward has a thigh injury and is also out for a couple of weeks, alonso said in his press conference yesterday. Three big players missing? a halfy/halfy strong team for LFC, big hitters on the bench if reqd for a cameo?
Little known wily old fox Sir Bill Shankly used to watch the players of opposing teams get off the team coach at anfield, to see who had not travelled on the official team bus? Sir Bill was using AI (common sense) circa 70 years ago, where have you all been! The warming up sessions on the pitch was also an indicator, now they don't warm up on the pitch before the official team sheets are both with the referee.

Why weak as possible Ed? I'd understand the decision to rest Virg or give Jaquet/Araujo 45mins each. Maybe take Macca and Isak outa the starting lineup but apart from that go strong as possible. Get through this game and Sunday then make wholesale changes, the whole 11 for all I care in Europe next week.
Agree1
{Ed666's Note - because I think we have a real chance of challenging for the title and Sunday is a must win game. I don’t want to risk any of our big game players being injured or lethargic because of it. If we put out a severely weakened team against Chelsea and we lost I wouldn’t lose any sleep. But if we played a strong team today and as a result any of our players were injured and our starting 11 was weak on Sunday I’d be livid.

Agree1
{Ed666's Note - I’d rather win the title than the PG Tips cup or whatever it’s called now
28 Oct 2026 18:03:47
Thing is though, a weakened team could get gubbed by Chelsea and that will hit confidence for the weekend.
I'm always in the "win the next game" boat, whatever happens in the one after is unpredictable.
Some players get injured or more fatigued by extra training.
Win this game then worry about Arsenal.
Totally appreciate Ed666's point, I just feel differently.
Agree1
{Ed666's Note - I think this is one where we’ll have to agree to disagree mate.
29 Oct 2026 08:03:21
Five wins in the last five games, perhaps we should have a bit of faith in the coach and squad and let the opposition worry about us? We are progressing nicely. We are far from where we'll be in 12 or 18 months and (as ever) the current squad needs some work, RB, CM and RW but not, perhaps, quite as urgently as some would have us believe.

Hi Eds/Reds,
I see some differing posts on Nyoni lately. One or two questioning his positioning, one or two very positive.
I have to say i am in the latter camp.
Every time i watch him he's looks absolutely excellent. Intercepting potential attacks, his ability to move out of trouble and find the right ball, almost every time. I'm a huge fan tbh.
I'm not sure on his pace and sure, he's still lightweight, but for me he doesn't look at all out of place, in fact, looks more comfortable than some of his more esteemed colleagues.
I'm not the oracle, so would love to hear your thoughts guys.
Is he ready? Should he be starting more? What happens if a Camara type comes in?
28 Oct 2026 11:09:56
I think he's doing ok, Molby.
He always seems to find space to be available and his choice of pass is usually good.
Also seems composed and able to sense danger and play the right ball to diffuse it - bit of a calming presence which we desperately need at times. I was screaming for us to keep the ball for 2-3 passes against Brighton and Nyoni helped with that
I was also encouraged by his commitment in the tackle, possibly buoyed up by Big Ron's contributions.
But yeah, work in progress - youth in his side and potentially going to build up strength as he gets older - good prospect 👍🏻.
Agree0
28 Oct 2026 11:18:44
He's been excellent when called upon so far. As you say, he's got a ways to go to fill out a bit, but technically, he looks more suited to the two midfield positions than some of the others.
As for Camara types; assuming you mean midfielders that are more defensive minded. As it stands, other than Endo and arguably McConnell, we are lacking that profile. It would be logical to add one.
There are question marks over Macca (contract), Endo (final year of contract), Grav (tactical fit), McConnell (is he good enough? ) and dare I say it, maybe even Szobo's tactical fit. Midfield overhaul is not out of the question unless a couple of the guys on big new contracts can evolve their game/instincts to play in a two.
Agree1
28 Oct 2026 11:23:03
Not an ed, I think Nyoni is very good on the ball and is good in the tackle. He is still developing and at times is out of position but I think currently both him and Macca give us the best combo. Though he is a little young to play every game.
We should be signing a camara type regardless, I don't think it will have much impact on Nyoni's playing time.
For me, I would be looking to move Grav on but with his wages that might be hard.
Agree1
28 Oct 2026 13:36:38
He is a very very good player. What's most impressive about him is his positioning off the ball and his awareness of what's around him when he does get the ball, his decision making is almost always on point. Early days yet but maybe the decision to let Curtis go so Nyoni could get more minutes wasn't such a bad one.
Not sure it's fair to expect Nyoni to get Curtis' minutes, Curtis played a lot last year, but he looks like he might slowly get there.

Nyoni has done ok without pulling up any trees.
The best compliment you can give him is that I don't think too many would be too worried if he had to come in and play a few games.
He's progressing nicely.

Nyoni has all the tools to be a far superior centre midfielder than Jones was and will ever be. His use of the ball is better, he doesn't needlessly hold on to it and quickly looks to move it on intelligently, he's also alert to danger and isn't afraid of getting his boots dirty, there's no way Jones would have made that challenge that Nyoni did at the weekend (which was a goal saving challenge too btw), Jones would have been day dreaming.

If he gets a bit quicker and a bit more bite in his game he could be a real player. Trust Iraola to bring it out of him.

Nyoni hasn't looked out of place when he's been on the pitch this season. He's a slender young lad in the most physical football league out there and he's coping well. As long as he doesn't have bad luck with injuries he has a huge ceiling in terms of potential.
It's early days but this could be a breakout season for him, it's going to be fascinating watching him develop.

@Vik, Jones doesn't play for us anymore, you might as well compare him with Jan Molby, for example, he doesn't play for us anymore either. If you want to slag Jones off, just do so and stop dressing up with pointless and irrelevant comparisons with past players you don't rate.

He's right, Carrick is a very limited manager and many managers could get better results with this squad, but it's not just about the manager and the squad. It's much bigger than that, it's the culture there from the higher executives.
They need to go on a rebuild. They need the right people leading the way. They need to accept it's long-term and if you get amazing results for 6 months don't assume all the problems have been fixed.

Quelle surprise. A Jim Ratcliffe owned club in a shambles.
I must say its impressive that the entire footballing fanbase predicted that Carrick would be out before Christmas after he signed his deal as permanent manager.
Calling Sir Gareth Southgate!

Apparently according to something I saw on the BBC, which might have been a second hand piece of 'news' was that the only thing 5hat kept Carrick in the job was they couldn't agree on a replacement. Whatever, good to see the sincere, but out of his depth, Fischer keeping the job. I see Eddie Howe was touted as an option. I'd be happy with that as a longer term 'solution'.
Like I say though, the manager and players are the effect, the Glazers and Sir Jimmy and Sir Dave are the cause - they are all just in it for the money. The Glazers are clueless and the Ineos boys are out of their 'safe space' in football ownership and operational management. Lots more soul searching and wringing of hands from Shappy 'before the day is done', as they say.
