Hi Ed's

Any substance in Jese Rodrigez from PSG rumours?

Think he would be a good addition.

cheers
YNWA.

samikewell

{Ed002's Note - Jese Rodriguez is available (because he has not settled, has been playing badly and has had a dreadful time since arriving in Paris) and has made it clear he wants to return to Spain. If Firmino, Coutinho or Mane were to leave it would make sense - else it makes absolutley zero sense. Right now PSG have shared two approaches for the player - neither of which is Liverpool.}

1.) 29 Dec 2016 09:25:40
Ed why does someone have to leave it's a squad game and we need different options to compete plus looks like we might have European games next season so will need bigger squad.

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool have a large squad and there are limitations. You cannot simply keep adding players - they will all want to play and Liverpool do not have the money to do that in any case.}

Hi Ed's,

what's the latest on ARDA TURAN?

I was waiting for someone to post on ARDA but looks like everything has gone quiet. Even his agent has gone quiet.

Do you see anyhitng happening with ARDA and Liverpool?

Thanks

samikewell

{Ed001's Note - no.}

Ed's and other posters,

What do you think of Matip's recent form?

I did not watch the first half of the season and the last few games I did, I see Matip as ordinary whereas the forum is full of praise for him as if he is our saviour defender.

Is it because he is just above Lovren, Klavan and those type?

Since the benchmark is itself ordinary, he is just above them and no special?

or

It is because he is returning from injury and not 100% back to his best?

Cheers.

samikewell

{Ed025's Note - a bit slow for me sami..i have seen milk turn quicker.. :)

1.) 09 Feb 2017 22:44:33
You know i scanned the eds comment first and automatically assumed he was talking about can, how horrible am i. don't agree about matip btw, had a few issues with getting back to fitness following ankle problems but he is no doubt quality. He just needs to regain form.

2.) 09 Feb 2017 23:40:57
He's back from 5/ 6 weeks out. He's a top top centre back. Calm, dominant in the air, great feet, yeah a slightly slow turner, but can gallop at a fair rate of knots. See how he almost blocked hulls second goal despite the forwards head start? An besides, pace never hampered big sam or carra. Once he settles I think it could be a great bit of business.

3.) 09 Feb 2017 23:40:57

4.) 10 Feb 2017 00:03:52
Yes just back from injury and reads the game, he doesn't need pace as he reads the game so well.

{Ed002's Note - Ideal, a centre back who cannot run after the opposition.}

5.) 10 Feb 2017 01:03:31
There's 20 million reasons why Matip is preferable to Lovren and SaKho
I think he is quality who has improved our defence when present and fully fit. He needs a quality partner along side him and someone behind them who knows when to twist and when to stick and doesn't leak uncertainty that seeps through the side.

It's not Matip that's the problem it's what's left of Brendans boys (who always show great Character)

{Ed002's Note - Coutinho and Firmino you mean?}

6.) 10 Feb 2017 01:32:35
how many glasses of wine tonight 002?

7.) 10 Feb 2017 02:21:16
Sahko would have been a great partner for matip.

{Ed002's Note - Klopp doesn't want him - it is done.}

8.) 10 Feb 2017 04:12:02
In defence Ed in defence.

{Ed002's Note - I am too slow and will give away penalties.}

9.) 10 Feb 2017 08:01:42
Why would you "run after the opposition" when you already have the ball 😎.

10.) 10 Feb 2017 09:37:52
Matip is a quality defender but he's not the sort of player who can do it all, and we won't be able to get a real and fair indication of how good he is until he's partnered with another CB who at the very least is competent more often than not.

11.) 10 Feb 2017 10:13:49
Sami Hypia, Tony Adams, Vidic, all top CB's who didn't need pace. Play him alongside another capable centreback He'll be fine, Lovren need to stop doing a krtel and dropping deep without warning.

12.) 10 Feb 2017 11:10:19
I think he's been solid, has decent pace, good passing and mostly good in the air. The problem is we don't have a settled partnership and we often leave our CBs very exposed. Most strikers isolated 1-1 with any CB will fancy their chances yet we do that to ours frequently.

Close your eyes and think of alderweireld and I bet you picture him in an organised defence. Think of Matip and you probably picture him one-on-one with a striker and no-one near him to support.

13.) 10 Feb 2017 13:35:28
He was the best CB in the PL before his injury, period IMO. He's taking time to get back but he is more than capable as he shut out Kane, Costa (mostly at the bridge), Vardy, several other. The prob is that he doesn't have a capable partner to help him get better. That should be The priority for next season's transfer window.

Hi Ed's and fellow posters,

What do you think of the strategy used againt Man City?

Isn't it a significant shift from Klopp's heavy metal and gegen press strategy?

The goal was good but how often do they go in? 1 in 10 chances maybe.

We played with two banks of four (aka) double bus parked in our own half and let City have the ball and were waiting to hit them on counter after the first goal.

The fact that we went without a striker and all midfielders says that we wanted to play on the counter and the goal made our job just easy.

The fact that City didn't get going
well into the 2nd half made it easier for us.

From a neutral point of view the game was dull and did not live up to the exiciting standards that was expected of.

One good sign to take note is Klopp is prepared to change the system/ style based on the opponent and team did well to pull it off.

Finally good win well grind/ ground out. The ability to play a different system and still get the result shows a very good sign.

Cheers and Happy New Year.

samikewell

{Ed001's Note - we played a 4-1-4-1, so it was not two banks of four at all.}

1.) 01 Jan 2017 22:51:59
Doesn't matter to me, we won, we got the 3 points against a top team. That'll do me just fine, couldn't care less what tactics was used, it worked.

2.) 01 Jan 2017 23:17:01
Firmino mane are forward players . Aguero did not have 1 touch in are boxs . Klopp out master pep and we could of been in 2 or 3 times if the ball was right. They had the ball but did naver really with it.

3.) 01 Jan 2017 23:33:29
I was there and I personally thought it was an exciting one. They had us on the ropes a bit second half but we hung on and defended well. Got the big 3 points. Lotta matches this month. got to keep our focus and keep cracking on.

Any word on Hendo?

4.) 01 Jan 2017 23:36:22
Klopp employed the best tactics to beat Man City. Good to see tactical versatility when needed.

5.) 01 Jan 2017 23:49:42
I thought it was one of if not the best performance of the season. No it wasn't played at 100mph but that is why I liked it. Thought they were very compact and solid but still kept the ball moving. I think it was a master stroke by JK as I'm sure City didn't expect us to play that way.

6.) 02 Jan 2017 00:36:21
I rekon klopp and co hav had a look at how best to take on the festive period games in total. Convenient how the schedule fell and allowed a plan vs city so the lads would have some energy in the tank for the full strength side to take on sunderland. Well that's what I rekon!

7.) 02 Jan 2017 07:34:25
Hello faith, the way we play against city sitting back and chasing ball is more energy sapping .

8.) 01 Jan 2017 23:37:35
I'm not sure if it was a tactic or just the way the game panned out. The early goal meant we didn't need to take unnecessary risks and we could afford to close the game out. Perhaps it could be the fabled 'plan b' that Ed2 is always going on about?

9.) 02 Jan 2017 09:16:45
It was a planned set up and it took a while for me to understand the reason. This team uisually attack even in the 94th minute. There was no reason to sit back other than a tactical approach.

10.) 02 Jan 2017 09:21:16
Planned set up Pip, This team attacks even in the 95th min. There was no other reason to sit back.

11.) 02 Jan 2017 13:36:06
I heard Klopp saying that it was not the intention of playing so deep more of a tactic of not leaving our defence isolated against De brune, Aguero, Silva an Sterling who don't really track back. We could not allow Milner and Clyne to press to high because how good City are at counter attacks. It did show that we can play a different way and gain the same 3 points.

12.) 02 Jan 2017 14:42:11
I think that Klopp has taken some lessons from games against teams who the technical ability to bypass our press. We stilk press but attack specifc signs. E. g., vs city when yaya got the ball with his back to goal you saw Lallana flying at him. J don't velieve that the way we played vs city was more energy sapping than other games we've played but I get the point about chasing around etc. Just had the sense it was a more controlled match so the running was centralised to half the fueld mostly. And also the benefit is s we see, baasically a full strength line up 2 days later. Klopp has the swuad tuned to go for it. Hope it works!

Hi Ed's

Does Danny Ings have a future under Klopp?

We all know he prefers only 1 at the top and we have Strurridge when fit, Origi and Firminio ahead of him plus Balo and Benteke if they aren't sold.

Shouldnt he be looking at more first team opportunities at this stage of career as Klopp said the same for Balo?

Cheers.

samikewell

{Ed001's Note - Firmino and Origi can play other roles in the side, Ings will get chances, as well as chances to see if he can play other roles, before a final decision is made. Unless he asks to go (which he won't this summer as he is desperate to prove himself with us) or someone offers ridiculous money, it is likely he will stay, for now.}

1.) 07 Aug 2016 12:16:34
Thought Ings would be perfect for Klopp and us. His work rate, pace and desire is all 100%. He can finish and offers a different style up top. Also, IMO, he seems to appreciate being at a top club and happy enough for a role not considered first choice but a constant role. Could be wrong but that's how I see Ings.

2.) 07 Aug 2016 12:16:43
He has great work rate and can finish natural striker with Sturrdiges injuries and Firmino not been a striker he will get a chance and I'm sure he will impress

If he was fit last season we'd of benefited greatly.

3.) 07 Aug 2016 13:59:08
Balo and Benteke will, regardless of whether they stay or go, be behind Ings,

4.) 07 Aug 2016 17:52:42
Personal opinion is he won't be here after next summer. Think he'll want more than a bit part and it's difficult to see him getting more than that.

Hi Ed's, How can we make sticky post/ thread where in we can see the result after a year or so?

We would like to have a post dedicated where Ed's and all other posters take the poll / post and say where they think Liverpool will finish the coming season.

It can be as simple as Position and name of them poster based on their selection which is open throughout the year but restricted to one selection per poster so that they can't alter over the course of the season.

Cheers.

samikewell

{Ed033's Note - The 'sticky' link can be the 'Polls' link at the top of the page.

Really appreciate. We also need to see who has voted us and where. It can be later also.

Hi Ed's

Whats your opinion overall on Kewell's time with us?

That was one of the signing that got me excited very much. But he never played like his time in Leeds and with his injuries finally ended in big dissappointment.

what's your take on him?

Cheers.

samikewell

{Ed001's Note - awful, he had plenty of ability but failed to show it with us at all, even on those incredibly rare times he wasn't 'injured'. One of the worst signings we have ever made.}

1.) 03 Jul 2016 15:18:07
think it was a case of I've signed for Liverpool "ive made it"? it still feels like that now with some players to me. think it was Mickey Thomas who had the same idea? ( asked Shanks to crack open the whisky when he was signing but Shanks tore up the contract an chased him) later to sign for mancs.

2.) 03 Jul 2016 15:35:28
Is it the case of him reaching his peak with leeds and never improving on it?

or

he had one good season with them and never was able to produce the form?

or read somewhere that though Viduka and him were from Aus, there was intense competition between then whule at Leeds and once he came here he wasn't bothered to prove anthing.

3.) 03 Jul 2016 16:06:46
Ed. do the inverted commas insinuate he was soft and almost faked injuries?

{Ed001's Note - he was very soft mate.}

4.) 03 Jul 2016 16:06:46

5.) 03 Jul 2016 17:11:17
He was quite sensational at Leeds though. One of many fav players at Leeds.

6.) 03 Jul 2016 23:00:37
It was probably coincidental but it did seem that he would produce his best form in the last year of his contract. Certainly there is a perception in Oz that he was soft and prone to blaming others for his misfortunes.

Wasn't Klopp involved when Migs got a new long term contract?
or
Was the contract just to get any peanuts if someone buy Migs?

Knowing our situation, we should got better quality than Karius. If we had got him as an understudy then yet but he is not first choice yet. We all might given 10, 15, 20 games and he might come good but on the current evidence he looks long way off. (some of his errors were like competing with Migs saying if you can bungle I can do it even better) That is why he was correctly removed from the firing line.

If last year signing of Caulker was kind of joke, using him as a striker for last few min was ultimate.

Ward was also not handled well. (calling him from the other team when he was doing good and not giving a fair chance and then shunting him out again)

Add to it not playing with any striker and going in with same combination and style irrespective of opposition are some of the things where Klopp has come up short.

But we have to give it to him for his press conference and honesty in answering the question/ situation.

Hope he will come good on the longer run.

Cheers.

samikewell

{Ed002's Note - Karius is the first choice keeper at Liverpool.}

Why is there a visible drop in intensity while facing a top 6 team and facing a team who are between 15 to 20?

We always seem to struggle when facing these teams.

There is a simple answer to it. What I feel is this:

1. The high intensity game tactic might work 50% to 60% of the times but not always.

2. If you see the trend the games where we lost, the opposite teams are not parking a full length bus. They are just blocking the width of the outer penalty area and are leaving the flanks for us to attack.

3. Klopp tactic isn't able to break this mini bus parking system as our play from either flank is abysmal. (wing play needs much much improvement)

4. No matter how good you try and hound the opposite players with this high press (gegen) press, Firminio is not a natural goal scorer. Using the same set of players and tactics shows inflexibility on the part of Klopp to go with natural strikers and attack the opposition by changing the system to 4-4-2 or any other variation.

5. While Rodgers was ridiculed for having put too many formations in the same game where the players lost what formation they were on, Klopp is being very rigid by not changing the formation or style of play.

6. There should be some long diagonal balls in the opposition box and we need to attack the 2nd balls and take a early shot. We need to see what is the statistic on shots taken from outside the box or from inside to see what it shows.

7. Currently the pattern of our play is the same and we are expecting different results which is not going to happen.

8. Even if we draw or win, it is due to the opposition team trying to be ope up and play and being naive to let us pass centrally and not because we manage to change our system is what I feel.

9. Most important is we lack quality players and what we have achieved till now is par for the course. A bit of over achievement in the first half had raised the expectation over the top for few of the fans and usual media who have no clue.

10. Changing the manager is not an option. We need to buy quality players and Klopp has to change his formations and mix it up during the games to change the results.

Cheers.

The fans have unrealistic expectations with title challenge while ignoring the quality of the players that we have.

If we look at top 5 or 6 teams quality wise (individual players) Chelsea, Arsenal and City are one level above.

In the next tier we have MU, Spurs and us.

MU has 2 top top players (IBra and Micky), we have 2 (Couts and Studge) and Spurs players on an average are good with none outstanding.

Klopp and Ponch are bringing the best of the available players and sometimes they don't produce or at 100% of their game.

We should appreciate what they are doing but not sure if this is sustainable over and entire season.

Please don't compare with last season wonder - Leicester city. That was an exception than a norm. (all the players coming good for an entire season)

Very silly to say Mahrez is dross.

He has got wonderful control, excellent ball playing skills.

The way he controls a long ball is pure poetry in motion.

Plz stop saying he isn't fit to .

shows your ignorance.

cheers.

samikewell

{Ed001's Note - Puzzled, James is not out of form at all, that is nonsense. He is playing at the level he was when he was bought. He had a couple of good games for his country and suddenly ignorant people, who know nothing about him, think he is a superstar. He has never been outstanding at club level, ever. He might be great on FIFA or FM, I have no idea, but in real life he has done nothing on the pitch to deserve the reputation he has.}

Very good point by Ko Lo.

1. He was doing well much to everyone's surprise but was kept out of the team.

2. Can gets chance after chance

3. Firminio isn't a natural scorer at all but is good at pressing, but not great. He still walks into the team.

4. The subs that Klopp makes are very late and they have hardly any chance to make impact.

So unless he plays more he will not improve and he will not get the chances here if we are looking for a replace for Sturrdige and that person would have to be a starter.

so if we a good bid comes in for him where he would get to play day in and out, he wouldn't mind jumping ship.

Having him and not giving him chances is doing him no good at all.

Cheers.

Ron - don't let your optimism come in the way of judgement.

Very valid points by Ko Lo and MK.

Yes, Couts is the only world class player in our team not considering Sturridge.

However if an offer comes anywhere near 50 or 60, I don't think the club will hesitate to do business.

Also to fellow posters - please don't call fans as morons or question their love towards club just because they have a different point of view or look for reasoning.

I really wonder how Origi can become world class in two or three years when he hardly gets any game time.

Similarly Grujic's transfer was also a gamble. He has hardly featured and even if he wasn't injured, there wouldn't have been many chances come his way.

Can we count number of such fringe/ potential youngsters who have gone on becoming top players?
