Even if we score 8 tomorrow, I will not be watching MOTD.

lostinredness

1.) 10 Mar 2023 23:40:38
There's going to be nothing to watch anyway. The MOTD commentators have walked now.

2.) 10 Mar 2023 23:47:49
Yeah, yeah! Everyone will be tuning in, especially now we don't have to the hear the dross from the so called pundits they have on the show, this may be a blessing in disguise.

3.) 10 Mar 2023 23:48:20
Hopefully everyone boycotts your thread so we can keep politics off of a football forum.

4.) 10 Mar 2023 23:53:38
Good too see the other pundits and now the commentators are making a stand.

5.) 11 Mar 2023 02:07:09
It’s just a shame that he has made a mockery out of a very serious situation with his continued spouting his mouth off on twitter. Him and his brother are hardly the brightest and why anyone would listen to what he says is beyond me. He can of course voice his opinion

6.) 11 Mar 2023 05:41:25
Problem is, St8talker, he can’t voice his opinion unless it aligns with his employers’ opinion. Not if he wants to keep his job anyhow.

7.) 11 Mar 2023 06:02:02
Only scabs are watching MOTD today.

8.) 11 Mar 2023 06:11:22
Gin, if I've read things correctly, the issue is more about him being told not to express an opinion, at all, regardless of whether it aligns with his employers' or not. Complex issue with key implications. Not a good idea to pursue it on football forum.

9.) 11 Mar 2023 07:17:59
Everton are taking it v seriously, they say there boycotting match of the day next season.

10.) 11 Mar 2023 08:05:14
Only if they get promoted, Digger.

11.) 11 Mar 2023 08:14:37
He made a ridiculous statement as per usual and showed himself up. Good riddance.

12.) 11 Mar 2023 08:21:35
That’s a pretty low sighted view of the original posters comment there MK - it is related to football and pretty embarrassing to say that.

13.) 11 Mar 2023 08:32:53
@Str8talker, so only people you agree with are entitled to an opinion?

When’s your job interview at the Beeb?

14.) 11 Mar 2023 09:01:20
Sorry, what happened here?

15.) 11 Mar 2023 09:04:51
MK I wish it was that simple, if it was F the tories wouldn’t be sung on the terraces.

16.) 11 Mar 2023 09:14:33
I think his comment was totally valid.

17.) 11 Mar 2023 09:26:00
Oli, something about him regularly posting about the UK's change in migration policies on his social media. And the BBC pulling him off of MOTD because of the views he has expressed. Politics as usual.

18.) 11 Mar 2023 09:40:49
What if you wholeheartedly disagree with what the virtue signalling big mouth said, are u allowed to watch highlights without being a scab as u put it?

19.) 11 Mar 2023 10:14:58
it’s gathering momentum, wonder if we will be able to pull out of the license fee instead of a Bosman we can have a lineker.

20.) 11 Mar 2023 10:20:50
Thing is he was 100% right. Weird situation he's in though given the now head of BBC was involved in a loan scandal thing with Boris. Awk it's a shame cos it's a serious issue now being made light of

Was his personal opinion, agree with it or not. He didn't articulate it on MOTD, which would not have been the place, probably like here tbh but here we are - will be interesting to see how it turns out, but hey lads this is a banter site so let's not argue over our political viewpoints - let's just hope we get another 3 points today!

21.) 11 Mar 2023 10:30:02
The issue is he said mean things about the Tories lads. It's as simple as that.

Impartiality me arse.

22.) 11 Mar 2023 10:43:46
AlRy, people can't convey their feelings fully by text. Words get twisted. Assumptions are made.

It's bad enough when that happens with football debate amongst friends. Let alone politics amongst strangers.

Should be left well alone on this forum in my opinion and I stand by it.

23.) 11 Mar 2023 11:04:10
Bill, we will win. ?.

24.) 11 Mar 2023 12:33:20
Totally correct MK, I come on here to read, chat, debate football and LFC. If I wanted politics I'd watch the news.

25.) 11 Mar 2023 12:37:34
Reality is, no matter whether you agree with what he said or not, is that you shouldn’t be removed from the national broadcasting service for disagreeing with, or criticising, the government. Not the greatest move when disputing the comparison with 1930s Germany….

26.) 11 Mar 2023 13:35:03
I just try not to watch the news. In the morning I actually turn to BBC2 to watch Antiques Roadshow rather than listen to all the negative crap spouted. I’ve done this in the main since lockdown and feel all the better for it.

Im thankful for Football, music, work and friends. Who needs moronic tweets or OTT responses in their life? Let them get on with it I say ?.

27.) 11 Mar 2023 14:28:34
at least nobody will be tempted to watch MOTD today anyway
PAIN.

28.) 11 Mar 2023 15:18:59
What was so ridiculous about what Lineker tweeted?
You mightn't agree with what he said but the reaction to it is ridiculous.

29.) 11 Mar 2023 21:47:24
There seem to be two basic issues:

An (any) individual’s right to free speech

Censorship and the (tacit) implication of Government collusion with an “independent” organisation.

Of course the mealy-mouthed BBC with it’s ‘exceeding guidelines’ is just spurious. - if Lineker had breached his contract or had acted illegally he would have been given his P45.

Really disappointing is that the real issue has now been manipulated of the agenda with the social media fuelled ‘oh no he isn’t, oh yes he is’ pantomime. Nice work by the Government and the execution of a ‘look no hands” bit of work.

30.) 12 Mar 2023 00:36:18
Well said, WDW.
And members of the government are out of line with their interpretations of what Lineker said.
He spoke of the language used in 1930s Germany. Anyone with an ounce of sense knows that the Nazis and the Holocaust will not be most remembered for the language for the language used in 1930s Germany.
This government since its election has been a disgrace and they want to scare us with the threat of a different race (s) . Like 1930s Germany really.
There, I said it, too.

31.) 12 Mar 2023 09:24:04
So essentially, Lineker gave his views on immigration policy on a non football platform that did not mesh with the govt’s policy hence, he got pulled from MOTD?

Wow, so much for freedom of speech and expression when you have the govt silencing people with views that differ from their own.

Is it time for Salah to be given a month's holiday and then comes back the player he was, because right now he is just plain ordinary. I would not have been surprised if he had missed that one last night.

lostinredness

1.) 22 Feb 2023 22:19:40
No, it isn't.

2.) 22 Feb 2023 22:21:20
But he didn’t miss did he? And in the last few games he’s shown signs of improvement. I could list some really good play by Salah in the last couple of weeks but it would bore people because there is actually quite a lot.

Now is not the time to rest him he’s just starting to get going again.

3.) 22 Feb 2023 22:49:08
Lionel Messi could be playing where Salah is right now and youd be asking the same thing. The midfield isn't even europa league level. They don't win the ball high up don't win 2nd balls not a good first touch between them can't pass the ball. Salah either has to sprint onto an overhit pass or dribble past 5 defenders. We won't improve by playing the Ox over him but id start him in midfield mind you.

4.) 22 Feb 2023 22:49:22
No mate. Apart from the obvious failings in the transfer windows, the failings on the pitch etc
One of the worst things we did this season was rewarding the players that didn’t qualify for the World Cup with Holidays and time off.
We rewarded failure, rewarded them for a bad start to the season, we had something like 7 players at the World Cup. We could’ve used that “second pre season” to get the team upto scratch, get this new system working, train train train.
Instead they went to New York and Maldives and by the time they got back to the shortened mini pre season holiday camp in Dubai the damage was done, the tone was set.

5.) 22 Feb 2023 23:07:58
What damage was done and to whom in New York and the Maldives, LFC8?

6.) 22 Feb 2023 23:08:56
I agree with Becker, he just showing signs of coming back to form, so nice play, increased new, a little bit of chemistry with Darwin and gakpo. I think it would be a really bad time to rest him. I did say about 2 months ago we show give him time off as he’s basically useless, but I think he’s plahimself into some level of form.

7.) 22 Feb 2023 23:24:37
of course it isn't.

8.) 22 Feb 2023 23:52:47
It's our busiest period. No holidays.
He can have the night off in Madrid if he digs his 'Never Give Up' t-shirt and it has the same effect from the bench as it did the last time.
Can you imagine that? Most teams have to. We don't.

9.) 23 Feb 2023 00:43:00
Salah’s form has dropped but he scored. Also who do we bring in for him because Bobby and Jota cannot play our wide. Diaz will might hit the ground running when he returns from injury in a couple of weeks or he might take a while to get up to speed. He is our first choice for the left hand position, which means Nunez goes central and Salah in his favoured position our right. Again, this just emphasises that once we get past those 3 our other forwards are not versatile at all. Bobby needs to be thanked for his service, wished all the best and let go this summer. Jota besides being a poacher has zero link up play and cannot play out left or out right. Plus we could fetch a decent fee for him so he needs to be thanked for his debut season but moved on. Get in a forward who can play across the front 3 and promote Doak.

10.) 23 Feb 2023 01:33:56
What on earth did Salah do wrong last night? Looked lively. Scored a goal and made one. He’s one of the only lads who can actually say he did his job.

11.) 23 Feb 2023 03:04:07
The front 3 chemistry is improving and they're starting to look like they understand each other. Holidays would disrupt that.

12.) 23 Feb 2023 03:39:46
That's quite a fair assessment Alonso. I think you left out Gakpo who is able to play either on the left or centrally but seems more comfortable in the centre. I would say the opposite is true for Nunez though, who seems to perform better on the left than in the centre. I think even if Diaz is back, we should stick with Nunez, Gakpo, and Salah as our front three for now.

13.) 23 Feb 2023 04:25:01
You really are talking some nonsense recently LiverpoolFC8, you should probably take a break because your form is worse than any Liverpool player right now.

14.) 23 Feb 2023 05:12:26
I really don't see what the signs of improvement are. He is an amazing goal scorer, which for much of the last 18, coming on 24 months has been largely flashes of brilliance / opportunism in what are otherwise mostly underwhelming performances.

Our highest paid player is largely ineffective and non-influential and has been for months. If we're paying him to pop up and score a goal and then do nothing else for the rest of the match, then ok, I concede that we are getting what we are paying for. But something tells me we are paying for more from him. much more.

15.) 23 Feb 2023 06:03:11
Salah had a break in the summer and for the World Cup and it didn’t spark him into his old world class form.

The only time I’ve seen Salah react form wise is when he doesn’t start games and he comes off the bench. He seems to want to prove a point. I think in 2 of his last sub appearances he scored a hattrick against Rangers and a double against Palace.

16.) 23 Feb 2023 06:35:07
That is an interesting thought JK23 so I took a look at his sub appearances this season. The first one was the Rangers game where you rightly said that he scored a hattrick after coming on. The other was in the FA Cup third-round replay against Wolves when we were already leading.

I took a look at past seasons as well and it doesn't look like he affects games that much when he comes off the bench since we were already leading in most of them. The only other time he positively affected a result after coming off the bench was the last game of last season against Wolves to make it 2-1.

He doesn't come off the bench very often though and stats like goals/ assists don't paint a full picture of a player's contributions on the field so you may still be right in that he reacts better coming off the bench.

17.) 23 Feb 2023 06:51:31
“They don't win the ball high up don't win 2nd balls not a good first touch between them can't pass the ball. ”

There are plenty of things to go after Onekiss without just making stuff up. To say the midfield all have a bad first touch and in particular can’t pass is just objectively bollocks.

18.) 23 Feb 2023 07:21:46
Drac cheers for looking into it mate. I’ll be honest my comment was only off the top of my head from memory and it wasn’t as much as me saying he should start on the bench but more over that would be better than giving him a month off.

Agree though he does start and play a hell of a lot of football.

19.) 23 Feb 2023 07:45:07
The question should be is there anyone better in our squad at the minute that even comes close to challenging Salah and his position? For me it’s a no, plain and simple. He stays in the team and helps dig us out, just like his other 10 team mates.

{Ed001's Note - surely that could be the problem? And sticking by him on that basis will not help. Sometimes you have to say a worse player who will work harder is more of a help to the team. Maybe it could be worth sitting him on the bench and putting in, for example, Doak and just letting them have a go at least. If even Salah can be dropped when he is not performing, it makes everyone sit up and take notice.}

20.) 23 Feb 2023 08:16:31
No worries JK. That was an interesting thought and really intrigued me. Definitely warranted more looking into since we have had players who performed better after being dropped to the bench or completely. And I agree that it is better to start him on the bench than to give him a month off.

21.) 23 Feb 2023 09:41:23
The forwards aren’t the issue. Midfield and defence are the problem.

22.) 23 Feb 2023 10:12:02
Hmmm I agree that Mo's not been good this season but he has looked much improved in the last 3 games. I do think some competition on that right hand side would help keep him honest though.

I am still not particularly impressed with his finishing. It doesn't look like he's going to change on that front.

23.) 23 Feb 2023 09:41:23
The forwards aren’t the issue. Midfield and defence are the problem.

Never thought I would ever say this, but well done Gary Neville.

lostinredness

1.) 20 Dec 2022 20:51:16
Really I mean really?

2.) 20 Dec 2022 21:29:46
Gary is that you praising yourself again?

3.) 20 Dec 2022 22:52:50
What has he gone and done now?

4.) 20 Dec 2022 23:08:36
@ArAy, figured out which end of the pencil makes a mark on paper.

5.) 20 Dec 2022 23:30:01
I think everyone should stand with Neville on this one, regardless of team loyalty. It’s amazing how many gammons, who have no objection to constant lies, are up in arms over someone telling the truth.

6.) 21 Dec 2022 03:08:49
Neville just says whatever suits his own agenda. Another elitist who's done well for himself. Should put his money where his mouth is like the rest of them or give it a rest and stick to what he's paid to do.

{Ed001's Note - his money only goes where it will make him more money. He is a greedy bugger is Neville and has no respect and no time for others unless he can earn money out of it.}

7.) 21 Dec 2022 06:08:33
He's a prick, and only does or says stuff that will benefit him. He clearly wants to have a career in politics.

8.) 21 Dec 2022 07:37:34
At least he’s not a Tory. I’ll give him that. Unlike Peter Shilton or Matt Le Tissier who defecate themselves in public almost constantly when it comes to politics.

9.) 21 Dec 2022 08:44:38
I don’t really understand the idea that speaking your mind on important issues, even if it appears a bit inappropriate in the context, is somehow a bad thing. Time and again it has been shown that the Overton window can be completely shifted by the right people making their thoughts known. People complained about the Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil protestors, but it cannot be denied that their action has made incredibly fringe political conversations very mainstream.

Maybe he does think he’s Football Jesus, I don’t know, and maybe he is a hypocrite, but he is explaining the issue to an audience of people who might be taken in by right wing press slander, and he is explaining it in a language they both understand and are more receptive to.

‘Apolitical’, ‘Impartiality’, ‘keep politics out of X’, are all such nonsense phrases. Absolutely everything that we do, whether we realise it or not, is a political decision and reflects on our personal politics in some way. You aren’t being the bigger, more mature person by demanding that football should be apolitical. All you are doing is upholding the status quo and demanding that we should all just accept our lot in life and take it lying face down.

If people are complaining about Gary Neville, then i’d love to know how they feel about the drive to eliminate racism and homophobia from football. Going by your own internal logic, that should disgust you as well. I’d like to know how that isn’t ‘politics in football’ and what you would do differently.

10.) 21 Dec 2022 09:22:00
AW, the problem as you have even pointed out in your own argument, is that there is a large majority of the population in this country, and wider, who need to have things explained them to by the likes of Gary and if they are generally getting their news from Facebook and Tik Tok, I have little hope in the wise Gary Neville leading them.

These people all have a vote and unfortunately tend go with whatever they see on This Morning or in the Daily Star which just leads to this countries majority being taken for a ride by the minority.

11.) 21 Dec 2022 11:05:19
Stuie, I disagree. I think most people that disagree with what Neville said, read the Mail, Sun and Express. All right wing disinformation newspapers, who's sole aim is to keep the working class in their place.

12.) 21 Dec 2022 09:56:42
Funny Neville didn’t touch the illegal fighting age males coming into our country, of whom will not be deported for years at least, staying in hotels- getting 1k a month, then you have Salvation Army wanting £19 or so £ to take care of OUR homeless and OAPs.

Maybe we should put Our own in hotels, before the illegal males. If only Neville would try that subject.

If you look at the other pages in the drop menu above Talk Conspiracy it may lead to education or at least more meaningful discussion than Neville or Lineker.

13.) 21 Dec 2022 12:39:13
Whatever Gary Neville says today, just know he had the opposite opinion on the same topic in the past and changed it for some kind of personal interest. Absolutely, One of the most self-serving individuals you will ever find. Anyone listening to him or who takes him seriously needs to have a good look at themselves, IMO.

14.) 21 Dec 2022 15:49:32
Politics shouldn't be brought into football. Don't care what the agenda is, people use to watch it for escapism.
