This is just my opinion.

Trent - again, you could question his defensive abilities, but he usually has help from Salah and also Matip reading the game and covering, but Salah's certainly not working back as much

VVD - sometimes you just wish he'd put a sliding tackle in now and again. Yes, he's blessed with pace and reads the game well, but over the years there's been occasions when he could have slid in to prevent a goal, also, standing on your 6 yard box, hands behind your back does nothing (as per last night) . attack and close the ball down, he had time before Sancho slotted home. too passive

Gomez - he's simply not the answer and doesn't have the footballing intelligence to play a high-line defence. He just automatically runs back towards his goal, playing the opposition on-side, time and time again and doesn't always read the game

Milner - absolute top pro, but expecting a 57yo to play in a high-intensity midfield for most of the match isn't going to work. Appreciate it's not his fault, always performs 100% and wouldn't be used so much if we didn't have so many injuries, but is off the pace now

Hendo - again, has been off the pace and isn't running the midfield

Diaz - is anyone going to tell him to actually take on players more, instead of cutting back inside and playing either sideways or backwards? Both Dalot and Varane were on yellows, so makes sense to attack them both down the left flank. When he does take them on, looks a threat. has pace, skill so would like to see more of it, just slows the pace down cutting back most of the time

Nunez - from what I've seen so far. doesn't seem to strike the ball cleanly, often snatching and mis-hitting or have that killer first touch BUT will give him time to adjust as I expect he's probably trying too hard and just needs to settle

Salah - just get the feeling that he's not interested on times. Certainly not working back as hard as in previous seasons, and is too predictable cutting in onto his left foot and is crowded out by 2-3 players

Firmino - just can't get into the games. Although having said that, in previous seasons, he'd have Salah and Mane making runs so knows where to put the ball, but these runs aren't happening. Also, both Salah and Mane in the past would pick him out in the box, but again, this approach play is not happening (i. e. Diaz cutting back inside, Salah crowded out)

On the plus side, Elliott tried and put a shift in, while Carvalho done well when he's came on

When everyone is fit, we still have the two extremes in midfield - players that are 29+ and injury prone, with players that are under 21 and learning. We don't have a couple that are 24, 25 or 26 that can bridge the gap. Yes, Keita is 27 and you would expect him to make that midfield position his own, but this hasn't happened in the 4 years he's been here. so good luck with that one!

Although we have a major target in Bellingham for 2023, there's no given that he'll actually join us, so knowing the previous injury issues with Ox, Keita, Thiago and Jones, I would expect us to have at least identified a couple of midfielders this window in case of this exact scenario, where we can bring one of them in late or maybe looked to get as much as we could for Ox and Keita early on and replace with one decent midfielder (easier said than done I know), but there's a few days left, so you never know.

We played well against City in the Charity Shield, so surprised we've been so far off the pace these last 3 games, but we will bounce back and click into gear at some point. just needs to be soon!

Bobby needs to get in the box first to be picked out and If he’s trying to pick out players maybe a 2 yard flick pass 8 foot in the air isn’t the right option.

2.) 23 Aug 2022 14:35:42
Midfield injuries, age, lack of experience is a big issue. We’ve been desperate for a driving force in there for ages.

3.) 23 Aug 2022 14:52:07
Not sure we have the players to play how Klopp wants us too anymore. For example, does Elliot have the defensive skills to play in a 3 man midfield as shouldn't it be him covering Trent as the right-sided midfielder - didn't see much covering last night. I also didn't see much high pressing with the forwards and midfielders working together in a press and if we don't press effectively then can we play the high line. I also worry about the pre-season training methods given half the team is injured and other half look knackered. I also worry about Klopp and his seven year itch and whether he can rebuild a team. My view was Gomez, Hendo (apart from the second goal) and Milner did alright last night but the rest were average to poor. Not many options to change it unless we sign a couple of players (midfielders) before 1 Sept.

Good assessment korky: Hope your right about Darwin as I’ve noticed the same thing.

Spot on for me Korky.

Do love the keyboard warriors that post "Who's going to spend £15m on Origi if they can get Daka for £17m? ". or "over inflated prices"

You're probably right. which is why is posted a range between £10-£15m for Origi (which you might have missed)

£15m would be nice. but £10m is more realistic (and it's the lower prices that I've used in the total) . Plus, teams interested in getting Origi are hardly likely to be tempting Daka to join! lol so to answer your question, yes. someone "could" pay £15m for him because they're never going to attract Daka

Remember, we sold Brewster for a reported fee of around £23.5m in the middle of a C.V.. If I had posted that at the beginning of this season, it would have been met with the same level of disdain. correct?

Agree I haven't factored in fees etc, so obviously an additional cost to consider, but as I don't know what these are. then how can I comment? so I guess you can easily add 10-15% alone just for the agency fees

So unless we get into a bidding war, then the cost of Konte for example, isn't going to double. He has a release clause of £30m, so fees on top ain't going to be an additional £30m

The whole point of the post was to illustrate removing the deadwood and replacing with at least 3 replacements would put us in a decent position imo for next season IF we can do our business early and get the players for around the quoted transfer (plus fees for those who will still quote this omittance lol)

The sell values quoted are indicative of what is feasible, which might be less or more than we actually get, but who actually knows? (referring back to my Brewster statement), but the majority of purchase could/ should be offset by outgoings, with hopefully, a small net spend.

1.) 16 May 2021 16:51:54
I really dislike people who refer to any of our players as 'deadwood'. Really disrespectful. Also I'd take you more seriously if you could spell Konate.

2.) 16 May 2021 17:21:11
How does disagreeing with your post make you a ‘keyboard warrior’? I’d argue referring to players as ‘deadwood’, a slur you would never say to their faces, makes you far closer to a ‘keyboard warrior’ than the people on this page (a discussion forum might i remind you) who have the audacity to politely disagree with you.

It sounds like tears mate.

3.) 16 May 2021 17:22:36
I agree kirkbyred1. I have no respect for OP. Calling our own players deadwood, esp players like Origi who had a huge part in our CL league win and had his part in bringing back glory days and Epl tittle is disrespectful at the least.

4.) 16 May 2021 18:37:32
Oh I might change my name to keyboard warrior now 😂.

5.) 16 May 2021 18:47:35
Oh. quite happy to tell them to their faces. but you say that knowing I probably can't. but I bet you did the same when Hicks owned the club. but bet you didn't confront then face to face? Lol.

6.) 16 May 2021 18:50:37
Oh Corky18 is cross is he? You had an opinion and got to express it. Well the others have the right to express a reply or their opinions too. You thought freedom of speech was a one way road is it? Grow up.

7.) 16 May 2021 19:04:46
Korky, we've just won a vital game in the last second with Ali scoring a blinder and you're still angry! Seriously lad, walk away now. Watch Ali's interview and get some perspective here.

8.) 16 May 2021 20:12:00
kirkbyred1

Well said!

Outstanding interview from Alisson. What a legend!

9.) 16 May 2021 23:23:22
Ed, is there an age restriction on posts? It seems like Korky is a young lad? This post just seems immature and maybe he's out of his depth trying to deal with the replies?

{Ed0666's Note - let’s just leave it here guys as someone said earlier we’ve just won a game of football that we snatched from the jaws of defeat the winner being scored by our keeper who lost his dad recently in tragic circumstances. Petty squabbles are insignificant

10.) 17 May 2021 09:37:01
Sent too soon. If you start your comments by calling players who have contributed to our success "deadwood" then you have lost whatever argument you are making, IMO cos I literally stop reading after that.

If (a big if, but let's go with it) we can sell the following players:

Adrian (£0), Rhys Williams (£8-£10m), Ben Davies (£8-£10m), Kabak (don't sign), Wijnaldum (£0), Keita (£15-£20m), Shaqiri (£15-£18m), Origi (£10-£15m), Woodburn (£8-£10m), Grujic (£12-£15m), Karuis (£0), Ojo (£6-£8m), Wilson (£8-£10m)

This could net us potentially £90m+, which could be used to purchase

Konte (£30m), Neuhas (£35m) and either Daka (£17m) or Malen (£25m), then our squad would be in a good position (assuming no big player sales) . May need an additional backup keeper too

KEEPERS
Alisson/ Kelleher/ tbc
DEFENDERS
Trent/ Neco/ Konte/ VVD/ Gomez/ Phillips/ Matip/ Robertson/ Tsimikas
MIDFIELD
Fabinho/ Hendo/ Milner/ Ox/ Jones/ Thiago/ Neuhaus/ Minamino
FORWARDS
Firmino/ Mane/ Salah/ Jota/ (Daka or Malen) / Elliott

This will give Neco, Tsimikas, Ox and Minamino another season to prove they're good enough.

Just my thoughts. It's been a poor season, but I don't think we need to panic. Those 3 additions add a good prospect for the next few seasons in all areas and with a virtual £0 (or small) net spend this summer, with crowds back and a decent transfer pot, we can look to replace Milner, Matip and upgrade other areas next summer.

1.) 15 May 2021 20:34:02
I always love these posts.
Who’s going to spend £15m on Origi if they can get Daka for £17m?
And who’s going to buy Ben Davies for £10m?
You’ve over priced our players and underpriced the players you want to buy. Plus not including add ons and agent fees and stuff like that.

2.) 15 May 2021 20:46:36
Good god always makes me chuckle when people pull player prices out of thin air.

3.) 15 May 2021 21:11:28
Firesale and clear the decks time.
Karius, Grabrara, Adrian, Gini, Milner, Matip, Phillips, Kabak, Ox, Keita, Origi, Shaq, Wilson, Ojo, Woodburn, Davies, R Williams, N Williams, Kostas, Grujic, Awoniyi, Van der Berg, Miller, Arroyo, Lewis, Gallagher, Minamino, Mane

I reckon about £120 million in the bank.

4.) 15 May 2021 21:15:02
This is one of the more fanciful of these posts I've seen for a while!

5.) 15 May 2021 21:29:59
How would we ever get the same price for Ben woodburn as Harry Wilson.

6.) 15 May 2021 21:50:42
Well try £2m for Davies for a start. 400% mark up on him after half a season? Not happening.
£6-8m for Ojo and £8-10m for Woodburn, two players who haven't progressed in 3 years? I'd say £8m between them, if even that.
I don't think we're going to sell Williams. I doubt we'd get £10m if we did.
I'm seeing figures like £12m quoted in the papers for Origi and Shaq, if we got £20m between them I'd be happy. You're probably not too far off on Grujic and Wilson. £20m has been suggested in the media for Keita, but we may have problems finding a buyer.

So your £90m+ should actually be more like £50m, imo. Maybe £65-70m if we offloaded Keita. Less loyalty bonuses, agents fees, solidarity payments and the like to come out of it of course. Then how much of it would be up front vs. over time? Which'd then have to be a consideration in what we can pay up front vs. over time.

It'd still be useful income for players that by and large have done little for us this season, but not quite the pot you had in mind.

7.) 15 May 2021 22:17:57
Half the prices of our players we are selling and double the prices of the ones we are buying (because agent fees and the likelihood we’ve tapped them up as well) and it’s probably more accurate.

8.)

9.) 16 May 2021 04:14:24
I especially like the sales for 0 amount, LOL. It's not a sale by any stretch of the imagination.

10.) 16 May 2021 08:28:35
I agree half the price on sales and double the buys then it’s a lot nearer the mark.

11.) 16 May 2021 09:50:17
The fees are unrealistic but I think you are about right with the actual personnel incoming. However personally I would prefer Hlozek to Daka or Malen.

12.) 16 May 2021 10:39:14
It would be nice if there was a thing from someone who knows more about transfers than all of us. I think it was called Sharkopod. I think that person was Ed002. Now if only he didn't get abused everytime he gave an honest answer or opinion about the club, maybe there would be this amazing and entertaining piece of info for us to consume.

Shout out to Ed002

Matt in FL.

13.) 16 May 2021 10:55:07
Well done OP personally I like it when someone shares their opinion especially when they have solutions ie who’d they let go and bring in.

Ok some of the numbers may be out but at least you gave it a go mate. Ignore the keyboard warriors.

Personally I’d like to see a goal scoring midfielder as a priority and a CB who can start as VVD and Gomez unlikely to see whole season without needing decent tests after their long termers.

Hopefully Elliott can be the back up forward we need.

14.) 16 May 2021 11:27:08
True, I suppose it is nice to see a positive post.

Awoniyi could be added on to the sales as well and as he's doing ok in Germany, so we might get a decent wedge (£8-£10m) for him.
