Sepp van den Berg apparently close to finalising his loan back to Preston North End for next season.

I thought that was a brilliant move for him back in January and he became a starter at right back. Let's hope after a good preseason he can cement a starting role at centre back and have a season playing consistently. I think it could do wonders for his development.

Perhaps he could be ready for the first team squad at the start of the 2022/ 23 season?

1.) 18 Jun 2021 18:31:21
I know its good for the young players to learn other positions but hope he can get the whole season at centreback next season and eventually maybe come back to take Matips spot in the squad.

2.) 19 Jun 2021 13:12:15
The problem is Preston have a pretty decent set of centre backs but are weak at full back, I could see him playing at full back again.

3.) 19 Jun 2021 13:23:15
good for him. main thing is that he plays I rekon.

4.) 19 Jun 2021 13:50:47
Gomez started as a left back so I have no problems with Sepp playing right back for PNE next season, good luck to the lad YNWA!

{Ed0666's Note - Konate started off as a striker.

5.) 19 Jun 2021 14:08:07
Could be a Golden Boot competition between Konate and Becker next season, Ed0666.

6.) 19 Jun 2021 16:24:01
So konate is firmino replacement as a defensive striker. Makes more sense now.

Hi Eds,

I read somewhere that Max Meyer's contract runs until 2018, meaning in January he will only have 18 months left.

Apparently Klopp was interested in the summer. Do you see us looking to him as a potential wing signing, either it in January or the summer?

Also, if Sturridge were to leave to get more game time, are we scouting Kasper Dolberg, be it as a replacement or just in general? I only ask because I've seen him a bit this season and I think he's ace.

Appreciate the great work you guys do.

rufusthered

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool made no efforts for Meyer in the summer and are not showing any interest now. A move to England seems unlikely until he has a walk-in opportunity at first team level - and I am not so sure that would be possible at this time. He does however fit the bill of a young attacking midfield player which prompted previous bids from Chelsea (who would have sent him on loan for one season before integrating him in to the squad) and Fiorentina in 2014. Schalke 04 do not want to sell the player and made it clear to Spurs and Milan who were showing an interest this past summer that any move was unlikely. The player has shared his desire to play in Spain with Real Madrid or Barcelona. Other sides such as Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Arsenal watched him last season but had no real interest.

Several English sides are amongst those that have been looking at Kasper Dolberg, one has held discussions with Ajax and one other has decalred an interest. None of this involves Liverpool at this time.}

1.) 09 Nov 2016 15:31:41
Thanks for the reply Ed002.

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome.}

Hi Eds,

I remember a couple of years ago we had first option on Will Hughes of Derby. As deals for Zielinski and Dahoud are looking less likely, would he be a player we would consider for centre midfield.

Personally I always thought he was a classy player and I think Klopp could do great with him.

rufusthered

{Ed002's Note - There was no option and interest seems to have long gone.}

05 May 2015 16:15:23
Hi eds,

Do we still have interest in Jordy Clasie? Looks like he will finally move this summer.

Thanks.

rufusthered

{Ed001's Note - last I heard he was all set for Southampton in the summer, I was told it was all sorted in January as a replacement for Cork, but put off until the summer. Our interest was back when Rodgers first took over and we have kept tabs but there has been no sign of a deal being attempted in the summer.}

1.) 06 May 2015 11:37:26
Thanks ed. Destined to be one of those players who will be bought cheap and then be worth a fortune the next season. I should have known with our policy that we wouldn't want to buy him at a reasonable price :)

{Ed001's Note - you never know what can happen, until a deal is completed fully anything can happen. I have seen clubs announce signings after a player has done the medical etc, only for the player to then turn round and sign for someone else. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if Southampton got gazumped on him, as there will be a lot of midfielders moving this summer as the dominos tumble following the Pogba move.}

Does anyone know what are FSG's long term plans for Anfield? Will they look to extend The Kop and the Sir Kenny Daglish Stand after they have done Anfield Road at some point in the future or will they just leave it at that?

rufusthered

{Ed002's Note - No that won’t be happening.}

1.) 28 Jun 2021 17:41:39
Cool, cheers Ed.

2.) 28 Jun 2021 18:18:15
Why would they not be looking into further development ed. Is there no space, no infastructure, or not financially viable?
Thanks in advance.

{Ed002's Note - it is not possible without paying to replace the infrastructure.}

3.) 28 Jun 2021 18:50:26
From a business perspective, we should have pressed ahead with building a new stadium 20+ years ago. But hey ho that waste of space Moores was in charge so we didn't.

The new extension will take us to nearly 60,000 capacity. That will be a decent sized stadium so if that is the very max we can get to then that is not too shabby. But ultimately it is a shame we cannot get any bigger as we could fill out even bigger.

4.) 28 Jun 2021 19:05:10
The new plans make Anfield look decidedly lop-sided. I hope they do expand the Kop and Sir Kenny stands in the future or it may tip over.

5.) 28 Jun 2021 20:22:16
I feel like people who want Anfield to keep getting bigger and bigger are overcompensating for something.

6.) 28 Jun 2021 20:57:24
Stadium with 61,000 seats available, of which only 27,000 have been given to season ticketholders (if what I have read is accurate) . What do you need a larger stadium for? Why not expand the season ticketholders' numbers (some of whom are waiting for decades) first, before expanding the far more lucrative match day revenues?

7.) 28 Jun 2021 21:14:59
That cliche works for fast cars Thunderbird. Not football stadiums you don't even own.

8.) 28 Jun 2021 21:25:23
We’ve gone from around 35/ 40’000 in the 80’s and 90’s to around 61000 now, that’s not bad at all and we’ve not had to move. And unlike Man City, we don’t rent our place from the council.

9.) 28 Jun 2021 21:59:26
Anfield’s capacity has never been bigger than it will be after the Annie Road end redevelopment, I think the record crowd is about 61,000 ish.
If rail standing were to be introduced on the Kop it could probably go up to 65 - 70,000 I’d guess?
Although the traffic and crowd dispersal plans would have to improve also to get over planning constraints.

10.) 28 Jun 2021 22:28:53
Juicer - thank goodness the capacity will be bigger after Annie road is developed lol. I'd have to question my trust in FSG even more if the developed the stand and somehow reduced capacity. :p.

11.) 29 Jun 2021 06:43:20
I can only imagine what a 61000 Anfield is going to sound like on a big European night or against United. Don't know why we need it bigger, only reason is because Old Toilet is bigger but that place, and the Emirates et al. are libraries.

12.) 29 Jun 2021 07:47:40
ArAy - you are spot on…. The new stand only received 2,000 seats for season tickets, it’s a joke, most of it went on corporate!

The season ticket waiting list is closed, there’s over 20,000…More season tickets needs to be allocated in the annie road end expansion.

13.) 29 Jun 2021 08:19:16
Thunderbird 2, I’m with you. Seems to be a lot of shortcomings that need to be overcompensated for.

14.) 29 Jun 2021 08:21:40
I personally want the ground the biggest and best it can be. The amount of times I’ve tried and failed to get a ticket is unbelievable.

15.) 29 Jun 2021 08:30:43
Juicer - I may be wrong but I don’t think rail standing will increase the capacity due to safety reasons.

16.) 29 Jun 2021 10:33:48
Expanding the stadium is good for fans, as it means more of them will get to see games, but the big money is in the corporate and commercial sides of things, that's why newer stadiums like Emirates and Spurs Stadium will generate far bigger revenues than even a bigger Annfield. Not much you can do with an old stadium other than increase capacity, they're not built to add on the fancy aspects of new stadiums.

24 Jun 2021 15:56:04
Is the consensus that Conor Bradley/ Konate or Gomez (whoever's not partnering VVD) will be the replacement for Neco as Trent's backup?

rufusthered

1.) 24 Jun 2021 17:41:35
I don't see the sense in letting Williams go. There are many others that should be sold before him (Grujic, Wilson, Awoyini, Karius, Grabara, Ojo, etc etc), if raising money is the motivation behind this. You have a young kid just on the fringes of the first team, can play two positions (RB and LB), and you never know when you may need him. Unless it's him who is agitating for a move, then I would wish him luck and Godspeed.

2.) 24 Jun 2021 18:02:30
It’ll be Milner.

3.) 24 Jun 2021 18:35:29
It's possible Williams wants to leave as unless Trent gets injured, Williams will play a maximum of 10 games a season here. If it is a case that he thinks he can play more often somewhere else, then I don't see the advantage in keeping him here unhappy.

I thought he played well enough around November / December when Trent was injured, but to dislodge Trent he'd have to become one of the best right backs in the world.

4.) 25 Jun 2021 08:21:46
The away goals rule was a leveller of sorts, it gave smaller teams some hope of being able to go through by nicking a goal away from home, also opens those tied up as there’s a reward for the away team to attack. Now that reward isn’t there there’ll be a lot more bus parking and hoping to go to penalties.

5.) 25 Jun 2021 11:56:17
Gomez should be nowhere near the RB role anymore. The kid is ravaged by injuries and we want to put him in a position where he will be running on those knees at full pelt every time? Makes no sense to me.

{Ed025's Note - yeah you dont want your players having to run or tackle oli, these clubs are just asking too much mate.. :)

20 Jun 2021 16:20:12
Neco starting for Wales today against Italy. Fantastic experience for him!

rufusthered

{Ed0666's Note - let’s hope he can get pasta his marker to put in some good crosses

1.) 20 Jun 2021 16:30:08
Tough task for him, that insigne has been a real pesto all tournament.

2.) 20 Jun 2021 16:37:36
Nice he's getting a pizza the action.

3.) 20 Jun 2021 16:48:32
Hopefully he doesn't give away a Penne-alty.

4.) 20 Jun 2021 17:00:59
Hopefully he will get some crosses in, great pasta of the ball.

5.) 20 Jun 2021 18:04:20
Hope Wilson gets on in the 2nd half, then maybe Neco can put a good cross in Fer'arry.

6.) 20 Jun 2021 18:05:22
You're making me hungry for dinner Ed! I love a bowl of pasta, can't go wrong with it!

Joking aside, it looks like he may be playing from the left. Klopp doesn't seem to like rotating the full backs so Neco and Tsimiskas didn't get much game time between them last year.

Do you think we could let Tsimiskas go and have Neco as primary back up for left and right back? I suppose in the worse case scenario there are other players to cover right back like Gomez and Konate who can't both start alongside Van Dijk at centre back. There's also a couple of kids in the academy who look promising at left back in Owen Beck and James Norris.

If we do end up in the Europa League next season, it could, in the long-term, end up being beneficial to the development of our squad.

We have a lot of young players on the fringes of the first team who haven't had enough game time this year and Europa could provide a way to do that next year. This could provide the way to properly integrate them as first team players. The likes of Elliott, Curtis Jones and Neco Williams could really establish themselves as first team players with regular Europa League football. Furthermore it could help the likes of Paul Glatzel, Leighton Clarkson, Musialowski and others to get meaningful first team minutes rather than the odd throw away appearance once or twice in a season.

I remember years ago, Europa League helped integrate Sterling into the first team when he first came in his first full season. Elsewhere Europa was the making of Harry Kane in Pochettino's first season, and Saka and Smith-Rowe have really developed well into first team regulars at Arsenal with Europa games helping to bridge that game.

Our squad management is a bit of a mess at the moment and Europa could help resolve that by giving youth players a chance to develop into useful squad members.

rufusthered

1.) 05 May 2021 09:28:27
I’d rather come 10th and not be in the europa!

2.) 05 May 2021 09:47:22
Fair enough but I think we're going to need the TV money from it by the sound of things!

3.) 05 May 2021 10:01:27
I like your optimism Rufus.

4.) 05 May 2021 10:32:20
Glass half full type attitude, I like it.
But I would rather some European football next season than none and like you say with careful game management we can give minutes to several of our promising youngsters.

5.) 05 May 2021 10:50:13
I never understand the snobbery towards the Europa league. I get it’s not old big ears, but it’s still a relatively prestigious cup.

I’ll make 2 predictions:

If we actually finish 10th like some people profess they’d rather happen, they would be calling for Klopp’s head

If we reach the final or go on and win it, these people will have watched every game and enjoyed the glory of it.

6.) 05 May 2021 11:21:54
the disrespect to the Europa league is ridiculous man I understand its not the best competition but its European football and a bloody trophy to win like the OP said it could be a chance to integrate some youngsters in while pushing for a trophy we need the revenue I bet if you asked any of the players if they had a choice they'd want to play in it rather then not at all.

7.) 05 May 2021 11:26:37
Anyone think that no Europe at all might mean only outgoing transfers as the squad would need trimming? Konate looks like it's moving along according to Fabrizo Romano and one of the Ed's (can't remember which one) . Gini looks like leaving but with no extra games would he think Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago, Jones, Milner, Ox, Keita, Shaqiri are enough to cover? Same with the forward players? Elliot to come back from his loan as well.

8.) 05 May 2021 11:53:41
Couldn't agree more. It's not ideal but let's make the most of the opportunity to blood some youngsters and make the season less intense for the guys currently expected to play every minute. Let's go fully at each competition next year.

9.) 05 May 2021 15:17:57
Always enjoyed the uefa cup, I like the randomness of some of the match ups, plus there's always top quality in it.

{Ed0666's Note - the most important thing is you’re guaranteed CL qualification if you win it and gives us a chance to blood kids in Europe which is invaluable

10.) 05 May 2021 21:07:09
Couldn't agree more ed, it's less scrutinized so if any of the young guns play and struggle they won't be thrown under the bus, a bit like the fa cup nowadays. Unlike my job, one bad night and I'm the worst lapdancer in the history of the verticle pole.

{Ed0666's Note - you know you’re my favourite poster vermiculo😂

Hey Eds, I have a few questions regarding FSG's football group they may put together in the future.

Firstly will FSG look to use Toulouse as a club to loan players to in order to develop them so they gain match experience? If this is the case, will they then look to buy more prospects in the transfer market like City are doing at the moment with Yan Couto, Kayky and Stefanovic as they would have a place to send them to where they could play regular first team football at a decent level?

Will FSG also implement the same "footballing philosophy" as Liverpool at Toulouse similar to the way Red Bull have done throughout their clubs? Will they try and get a manager in who has a similar style of play to Liverpool currently and will they try to change the structure of the club so it aligns with Liverpool's?

Are FSG looking to create a franchise in the MLS? If they are, I assume it would be in Boston and they will play in red, with potentially some play on words between Sox and Soccer in the team name!

Will youth development and the academy play a big role at these other clubs in the family or will the aim of the group have entirely different goals?

Finally are there any other countries that FSG will look to have clubs from?

Sorry for the many questions - I am just intrigued what FSG are planning for their football club group and the implications it could have on LFC. Many thanks for your good work guys!

rufusthered

{Ed002's Note - Right now everything is up in the air. The plan was certainly be to build a group of clubs and whilst players may go to Toulouse on loan other options may be considered. What they won’t do is invest in clubs where there is not a good opportunity for a return, and once significant growth is no longer available then selling and doing it again makes more sense. FSG have not registered interest in an MLS Franchise. In terms of other countries, now is not a good time to go down that route. The big fear is that they will leverage more and more debt on the club.}

1.) 28 Apr 2021 22:09:16
Cheers Ed, much appreciated.

2.) 29 Apr 2021 13:35:40
I’ll be honest Ed, huge losses, no champions league, sponsors walking away because our owners are toxic and more leveraged debt is beginning to sound a lot like the last bunch of chancers who owned us. I have this awful feeling that we’re going to see an exodus of our best players in the summer, as there’s already talk of Madrid fancying a go at buying Fabinho and Salah leaving. That would leave us totally screwed us next season.

Apparently he's close to a move to Dortmund regardless.

He should try to get a move to one of the LA sides. They tend to be given a tonne more coverage in the American general media than the other MLS sides do so it could be good publicity for his music over there in the future. Probably couldn't expect to be a designated player though.

I have a personal theory that the reason Zlatan went to LA Galaxy because he wants to be in movies in the future.

There are no vintage international teams in this tournament. France on paper could have been but there are too many idiots in that squad and Deschamps has managed them terribly. I think Italy look decent and I said at the start either they or Portugal would win it. I would still back Italy as the favourites. And I hope England don't win it as the football they have been playing is awful and the last thing they need is rewarding for it.

Honestly I thought he was supposed to be a better standard than League 2. I thought if we were going to loan him it would be to a lower Championship or Eredivisie team. Did I overestimate him?

Or is this move purely about getting guaranteed minutes in professional football due to the injury problems he's had and better is predicted for him in the future? Anyone got any intel on this one?
