ED002. Reports Liverpool have made an offer for Emerson. Please tell me it's true, or at least we're trying to get him? I reckon one of Gravenburch or Endo sold if we do. Thanks in advance and don't worry if no reason to answer.

Leelad42

{Ed002's Note - Ederson (CM) Has had a very good season and has attracted interest from Spurs, Newcastle, Manchester United, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid. Barcelona have also sent scouts. Atalanta want an auction if he is to be sold - starting at €40M. With CL football and Gasperini staying put it makes it less likely he will be sold. I am not aware of Liverpool having made an offer.}

Hi Ed002. Sorry for throwing another question your way. I know you don't like answering questions on timing (understandable) but how badly do you think Liverpool want to get deals done early? I suspect the season will have started before all of the incomings are sorted. Mainly because we have so many players on the books already and big International tournaments in the way. Interesting to hear your view on this.

Leelad42

{Ed002's Note - Some clubs will wait to see if players perform well in tournaments attracting more interest. Many clubs already have agreements for players. Targets won’t change just because they cannot be signed early so it happens when everything is sorted out.}

Morning Ed0O2

Hope you're well. In terms of centre half's have we now established our first choice? Hearing noise on Antonio Silva from Benfica but appreciate he is well sought after!

Leelad42

{Ed002's Note - Others will now be ahead of Inacio as preferred options. Silva is of interest but hugely expensive and has serious interest from elsewhere. Pacho and Hincapie may well be the first picks and both could be purchased for the price of Antonio Silva.}

1.) 02 Jun 2024 13:15:02
Ed,
With Pacho and Hincapie being first choice. Do you see a world where both are signed? Or is it one or the other?

{Ed002's Note - I could see both signed.}

2.) 02 Jun 2024 13:32:02
To me, Pacho and Hincapie make sense for playing LCB in a three or left back in a 4. I wouldn't trust their aerial ability enough to play in a two. If one of these two do come in, I would see them as a Tsimikas replacement and Robbo challenger rather than a Matip replacement or Virgil successor.

If we all agree that Konate's fitness needs to be managed, then there's two choices: 1) Use Joe Gomez exclusively as a CB again or 2) go and sign another CB.

3.) 02 Jun 2024 13:37:24
Can you see a world where Liverpool sign 2 lcb this summer? Or was your comment more reiterating how expensive Antonio silva is? Cheers Ed.

{Ed002's Note - I could see both - they are versatile and not specifically left sided centre backs.}

4.) 02 Jun 2024 14:17:11
If Silva's as good as he's meant too be id rather sign him. Sign starters instead of collecting squaddies, that's what the academy is for.

5.) 02 Jun 2024 14:13:04
Thanks as always Ed!

If VDB goes along with Matip I think we’ll need 2.
I can see 3 cbs in the back 4 next year. Similar to what arsenal and city do. When Trent inverts there’s more protection, they shuffle across into a back 3. and perhaps a future VVD replacement too.

6.) 02 Jun 2024 14:26:17
It’s conceivable that Tsimi and VDB will be sold.

Matip has already gone. I think Nat Phillips has gone too.

Be interesting if anymore leave… Gomez? Robertson?

I’d keep those two but if they don’t fit the new managers style of play they might leave.

For example Robertson is not suited to inverted IMO. He’s best bombing down the left and overlapping and the wide player and getting crosses in. If we’re not going to play that way I would say someone else might fit better.

{Ed002's Note - For the defence:
Alisson (G) Interest from the Middle East but I think it most unlikely he will leave.
Marcelo Pitaluga (G) Needs to consider his future or bide his time at Liverpool. Struggling in the League of Ireland.
Caoimhín Kelleher (G) Decision time for the player and Wolves may try to tempt him after some scouting. Celtic have spoken with his representative. Expect him to leave.
Vitezslav Jaros (G) Having a good loan at Sturm Graz and perhaps an option to take over as number two but he may want more game time.
Adrian (G) Out of contract in the summer and will depart.
Anderson Arroyo (RB) Time to move on. Zero chance at Liverpool after seven loans in five years.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB/RWB/RM) Seen by Real Madrid as an option to Reece James. May offer an exchange for Rodrygo Goes or could try and persuade the player's agent to have their client run down his contract.
Conor Bradley (RB) RBS keen with Ljinders pushing.
Kostas Tsimikas (LB) Agent previously said he was being forced out of the club to raise €20M or more. Since then it has been quiet and I am not aware of any approaches.
Adam Lewis (LB) Will leave as a Free Agent to join Newport County.
Nat Phillips (CB) Time to move on come the summer.
Sepp van den Berg (CB) He likely won't get a chance as a starter at Liverpool and will probably be sold in the summer to raise funds - could be a mistake by the club but the player has taken the position that he wants to move. There is no release clause for Mainz but they will have a a first pick option if he were to be sold - and they have made their interest known and will look for an option to buy the player who has had a great season. Brentford, Southampton and Wolfsburg offer options. Will need to speak to the club and see what other options he has, but he may have burned bridges in an interview with De Telegraaf.
Billy Koumetio (CB) Seemingly not worked out. Basel may offer a route away from Liverpool.
Joel Matip (CB) Free agent. Besiktas may offer an option. Saudi PL may offer a solution.
Joe Gomez (CB) Agent is talking to Michael Emanalo but I doubt Liverpool will want anymore HG players to leave.
Ibrahima Konate (CB) Agent has been speaking with PSG, but down the list for them.
Virgil van Dijk (CB) I am told that van Dijk's agents have said that had approaches from both Real Madrid and Barcelona. Real Madrid see VvD as a low cost solution in terms of transfer fee but need to make space in the wage structure. Barcelona offer an option but will need to agree sales first. At this point in time it will be very general enquiries only and I doubt either club will move for him. Liverpool need to make a decision about a new contract.
Rhys Williams (CB) Will need to find a new home which will likely mean dropping down a tier.}

7.) 02 Jun 2024 15:43:35
Hincapie sounds like he makes sense then if tsimikas were to leave, being able to challenge for left back and left centre back. Quite like a left back who is defensive minded when you have attacking minded Trent/ Bradley the other side.

8.) 02 Jun 2024 16:17:02
Ah let's the fullbacks bomb on like we did in our pomp with trent and robbo, this playing centrebacks at fullback bores the bejaysus outa me.

9.) 02 Jun 2024 15:43:37
Thanks for the defensive summary Ed002.

Does Sepp VDB count as HG based on his time in Liverpool reserves and Preston North End? Not sure if he has accumulated enough years playing in an English league to be classed as HG?

{Ed002's Note - Yes he is HG.}

10.) 02 Jun 2024 17:20:24
Thanks Ed002. Interesting they're both Ecuador players and will already have a good understanding together. Plus both play on the same side in the defence, albeit one more like a full back. You think that's why it's encouraging us to get both?

Making more sense, the more I read about them. Both on low salaries, so wages won't be an issue, both only 22 and left footed. Fingers crossed we get them done.

{Ed002's Note - They are versatile and can play in a 3 or 4. Don’t be influenced by their stronger foot.}

11.) 02 Jun 2024 19:07:20
Ed002, you’re a beautiful man. Thanks for the info.

12.) 02 Jun 2024 20:40:35
I’d have Roy Hodgson in the dugout before I’d watch us with two left footed centre backs ? don’t ask why but it drives me crazy it’s a pet hate.

13.) 02 Jun 2024 22:25:09
Would you have two right footed centre backs @OneKiss? Just curious.

14.) 02 Jun 2024 20:48:49
Eds, anything to the Gomez to Saudi rumours, and him not being likely to play much under Slot?

{Ed002's Note - RTFP.}

15.) 02 Jun 2024 23:09:27
Thanks Ed002 for the detailed info, as always.

Here is a wild thought folks. Imagine we don't sign any players this summer except for a back up keeper. New contracts to those with 12 months sorted, except for Salah who is seeing out his contract. Tyler Morton stays, Van Der Berg new 4th choice centre back. I bet most would completely over react and panic.

I still think we'd have a good season you know! Ed001 what you think?

Leelad42

{Ed001's Note - it is hard to say until the new man gets to work. Transfers are certainly not the be all and end all though. There is a good squad there for him to work with already, it is up to him to make the most of it.}

1.) 08 Jun 2024 19:40:15
Yeh we might finish 4th but that’s not what we are aiming for. DM and CB priority for me and then RW if Salah leaves. That would be a good window.

2.) 08 Jun 2024 19:52:37
It depends what you class as a good season. If that were to happen, and assuming other sides strengthen, we would do well to finish top 6.

3.) 08 Jun 2024 20:34:46
The word “strengthen” is used very loosely Rome. It’s the assumption that if you add a new player that they are automatically better than what they had before. A lot of times that ain’t the case tho.
Not saying we shouldn’t buy any players but form and fitness of the players we have is more important. For instance if Jota had stayed fit and Nunez found his goal scoring boots we would certainly have had a better season. I would certainly take a fit squad over any sort of strengthening
I think our squad is good already and I only see a few players coming in.

4.) 08 Jun 2024 21:00:18
Very good season if we make top 3. An okay season if we make 4th to 6th. I don't want to even think of anything lower. Call me an entitled snob if you wish, but I've simply gotten used to our high levels of performance under Klopp.

If we don't bring in replacements and reinforcements this summer, it will mean (to me) that the club didn't learn anything from the season Lovren was not replaced or 2 seasons ago when the midfield was not refreshed. Key is being one step ahead of the game always.

3 Players minimum, maybe 4. Competition and backup for VVD, leftsided. Competition and backup for Robertson. Competition and backup for Salah. And if both Kelleher and Adrian leave, then we need GKs.

5.) 08 Jun 2024 21:34:48
Fairly consistent views here. Most will say we need reinforcements. That kind of goes against those that have said Klopp has left us in a good place.

If Slot and his training methods/ medical team, can get the best out of Konate, Szobo and Nunez, then all of a sudden we're a different beast.

6.) 08 Jun 2024 21:53:36
Salahs been appalling. He's actually cost us in huge games. It's time to move him on and cash in.

7.) 08 Jun 2024 22:29:19
If we sign no one we’re not winning the title or even getting close. Maybe 3rd or 4th at best. There are glaring issues to deal with. Standing still in the premier league is going backwards, we’ve literally found that out the hard way.

8.) 08 Jun 2024 23:10:31
Im all for just 1 or 2 signings once they're top class and improve the first 11 instantly. Not easy in a lot of positions but that should be the aim.

9.) 09 Jun 2024 01:47:27
It all depends on how the coach wants us to play. If we tweak the way Klopp had us playing last season then there aren’t many changes required.

If the system changes there there may be a need for additional players, but as yet, who knows.

The idea that we just HAVE to sign players otherwise we won’t progress is false. The likes of Jaros, Bradley, Quansah, Beck, Bajcetic, Clark, Doak, Kone-Doherty, Nyoni, Danns, Koumas, McConnell, Morrison et al will improve with experience and with the exception of about three weeks towards the end of the season we were right in the mix. Buying for the sake of buying is not a solution - look at United and Chelsea - they have spent ridiculous amounts of money and have both been very disappointing for the last two seasons.

At the moment I think we need cover on the left side of defence and in the holding role in midfield. That may change if the club decides to sell some of the first team squad players and, as I say if our tactics change.

I also understand that some of the youngsters mentioned are just kiddies and some may not make the grade but, if they do (and some of them are well on their way) foreach one that does we save ourselves millions.

10.) 09 Jun 2024 06:26:53
Real Madrid just won the Champions League and then went and signed Mbappe. Just saying.

11.) 09 Jun 2024 09:06:43
Leelad42 Klopp did leave us in a good position but still didn’t change the fact we need quality reinforcements. Like VV if we don’t sign anyone we ain’t winning anything. Whoever said 4th to 6th is an okay season is talking nonsense. Anything outside the top four is atrocious.

12.) 09 Jun 2024 09:17:33
I can't see us winning the League because there are two better sides than us. The new manager, transfers and other factors could change that but I can't say how.
We're a side challenging for top four as things stand.
I see Salah is getting it even though he was top scorer again.
Yes he was poor in the second half of the season but there was no one to replace him. Wouldn't it make more sense to cash in on our much younger record signing, if we need to cash in on anyone?

13.) 09 Jun 2024 09:25:00
We do need signings, not many just quality ones. Im about the biggest advocate of the academy on here but if were serious about even maintaining how we finished last year we could do with improving one or two positions.

14.) 09 Jun 2024 12:41:19
Spot on Rover. Chelsea and Utd are constantly 'Strengthening:. Not worked out to well for them.
I would be more than happy to see what Slot can do with our existing squad. We have a good spine, good youth coming through and lots of untapped potential in my opinion. The only signings I wouldn't mind seeing are longer term replacements for Salah and VVD regardless of whether they leave this summer or not.

15.) 09 Jun 2024 14:20:44
If you think Edwards and Hughes are going to let their first summer pass without flexing their muscles and make signings then I might urge you to google "ego" and "vanity".

16.) 09 Jun 2024 18:17:48
Addition by subtraction is also a thing. Just saying. As Ed01 said, there is a good squad for Slot to work with already going into the seas and that is undeniable. Whatever reinforcements we need have to be targeted to fill or improve a position we need or need an upgrad and must be what and who the manager wants or can clearly work with.

Addition to the squad in a bid to just check the "we strengthened" box is useless cos we "strenghthened" in the summer of 2022 with 4 players YET only one player (a certain Darwin Nunez) is still at the club AND if many in our fan base has their way, we would have NO player from that window still at the club. Again, just saying.

Ed002. I find it unlikely the club will go even higher with his wages. He's already paid significantly more than the rest of the squad. I can only see him leaving on a free at the end of the season. Small chance we sell for a reduced fee this summer but I don't think Salah will want to, unless a big Spanish club.

Angus mate. They want £20m hence me saying we may as well give the lads we already have a go.

Leelad42

{Ed001's Note - more to the point, Trafford is god awful. He can't kick, save or sweep up. Absolute abomination of a keeper, who is so bad that Burnley dropped him.}

Ed001 - yeah mate. On loan at Strum Graz. I believe he improved from previous loans. 6"3 and maybe worth a try in pre-season. You reckon worth giving him a go, instead of buying someone? The Brazilian lad the other one with a chance. No point keeping them if not giving them a chance.

The lad on loan who made his Czech Republic debut this week. Surely worth a look at in pre-season.

I posted something similar to this question last week. Let's be brutally honest. We're missing a deadly goal scorer (Jota staying fit or Nunez being consistent) AND a top level holding midfielder. I love Endo but he just isn't quite top level. No coincidence Rice and Rodri make such a difference to the teams who finished above us.

If Jota or Nunez can stay fit/ score consistently then we only need 2 signings. A left sided CB to push VVD and a top level holding midfielder. If we get them signings right I'm convinced we'll challenge.
