Hi Eds, seeing a report that Liverpool have made contact to sign Waldemar Anton of Stuttgart. I've never heard of the guy is he any good or is there even any truth to it? Thanks.

{Ed002's Note - Waldemar Anton (CB) Signed a new contract in January to fend off the interest of Borussia Dortmund. Bayer Leverkusen have him as a target to replenish their defence which is attracting a lot of interest but with Hiroki Ito departing and both Rouault & Stergiou returning to their clubs Stuttgart will not look to sell their captain Anton. I am not aware of any approach to Stuttgart by Liverpool at this time.}

Thanks, I appreciate it as always.

VDB is a decent bargaining chip.

Wouldn’t make much sense as a signing, he’ll be 28 in July so he’s getting on a bit, and the only reason to sign a player that old is if they’re exceptional, which he isn’t. He looks a bit one paced and not entirely the most mobile player in the world.

{Ed025's Note - getting on a bit at 28?. i thought that was when a player was nearing his peak VV, that must make me a neolithic artifact mate.. :)

Correct on both accounts Ed ;)

{Ed025's Note - thanks for that SG.. :)

Signing someone at 28 years old can make perfect sense with the right player. They’re at their peak and will likely be for 4 years which is plenty of time to get your value out of them.

if we had the chance to sign Messi at the ripe old age of 28.:D
I have no idea who this guy is but as others have said, it really depends on the player and their own development pathway. Could be the experienced leader we need to add to the squad etc.

Absolutely. Depends on the player. We signed both Milner and Thiago at age 29.

If 27 is now too old to sign a player because they don’t have resale value then that’s a hell of a loser mentality to have. Surely we want to have players in their primes?

Madrid have been the most successful team in Europe the last decade and they’ve kept the likes of Rudiger, Nacho, Ramos, Ronaldo, Kroos, Modric and Benzema into their 30’s.

It varies player to player and I think the trick is knowing when certain players are going to peak or dip. You can’t put a blanket age restriction on it.

Stuttgart are a high pressing high tempo team, so maybe the link isn’t as outlandish as it seems, I know nothing about the player though, from all appearances he seems quite decent.

See your point mk but Liverpool aren't madrid. We have very limited salary space so we can't really spend it unwisely by giving longer contracts to players with diminishing usefulness. Madrid can afford to that because of the absolutely enormous commercial income they have.

We have to be more careful. Let's not forget that giving extended contracts to hendo, milner and fabinho stopped us from replenishing midfield and it was only after we knew they were going could we seek replacements.

Contract obligations are the single biggest expenditure in football.

You are in your prime from 27 - 30, as Ed25 said so this player at 28 should be approaching or in his peak already.
