Gapko is going to City according to Ornstein.
No replacement and sold to a Premier League rival.
It is absolutely criminal what Hughes is doing if this goes ahead.
29 Aug 2026 20:30:03
Gakpo likely going to City!
What on earth is going on?
1G last week, 1A this week.
Why aren’t we sacking on Frimpong?
Haha
29 Aug 2026 20:27:17
Serious question. What is STC doing? He won’t be held accountable because he’s off in a few days and at least to the outside world it looks like he doesn’t care what happens. Why is FSG seemingly allowing it? Back the manager.
29 Aug 2026 20:40:15
Rejecting players wanting to come unless their belongings fit into a single suitcase.
He despises too much baggage.
29 Aug 2026 20:23:23
Gakpo to City? Tell me the The Athletic is clickbaiting here. Wow.
29 Aug 2026 20:18:34
Is it only me who's massively pi$$ed that we look to be selling Cody to city? Selling to a direct rival?! Cray!
{Ed666's Note - As the great Jose Mourinho once said
‘if I say anything I’ll get into trouble’
29 Aug 2026 20:32:36
I agree, but this is only if a replacement is found. So, given Hughes' record, a replacement will not be found and Cody will remain here for the season.
29 Aug 2026 19:50:00.
Shifting Gakpo from LW to RW after he was MOTM in the season opener was criminal. A shocking decision. Particularly as Munoz had made an impact from RW last week - and did so from there again today.
There was no logical reason for it. Was Iraola afraid that another MOTM display from Gakpo would further highlight how completely messed up our priorities have been? Barcola will need to be MOTM every week to justify his selection.
That the club were/are seemingly open to Gakpo leaving demonstrates how R. Hughes's football knowledge is equivalent to that of typical "football fans" on X/Twitter. Anyone with half a brain could see that Slot was the problem for everyone last year.
The guy essentially barred FBs from overlapping FFS.
Gakpo's been our best attacker in pre-season and in the opening games. He has played his part in winning us the league before. 24 in 54 at international level - always showing up in the big tournaments. 122 career goals. Grabbed 16 for us in 23/24 - 18 in 24/5. Got 9 last year in a team that spent 70% of the game passing along the back 4. He only turned 27 in May.
The Gakpo-bashers should hang their heads in shame. If he leaves before the window shuts - it will sum up the mismanagement of the club - and also how that mismanagement is aligned with the most football-ignorant in the LFC fan base.
29 Aug 2026 20:10:00
Agreed, we should keep Gakpo this year. Potentially, Iraola thinks the same and wants to transition him to the right, with Barcola being the starter on the left.
29 Aug 2026 20:11:13
I do like Gakpo and the bashing he got last season was ridiculous. I think it's because he was Dutch but people forget it was Klopp who brought him in not Slot (who had no option but to play him most of the time).
I don't think the club want to get rid of him but Barcola is an upgrade for AI's style and our current personnel. Plus we have young gems in Rio and Munoz for the left along with Barcola. The club are stuck in a tough position. There is talk of 80-90 million pounds for Gakpo, we won't get this chance again.
If Gakpo was left footed, we would 100% keep him and play him almost every game on the right but we are stacked on the left and desperate for someone on the right.
If Ekitike was fit and we signed say Minteh/Rayan taking that fee for Gakpo would be terrific business but unfortunately Hugo is out and the right wing market stinks.
Can people not at least appreciate the position the club is in? They have to think of the mid-long term, i.e. no matter what happens with Gakpo we still need to bring in a RW and Hugo will be back after Christmas. You can't then have Isak, Hugo, Gakpo, Barcola, Munoz, Rio New Right winger, Wirtz, Koumas (plus a pathway for Abe).
29 Aug 2026 20:18:30
I'm sorry, but Gakpo is not good enough. 70m for him is way too much to turn down.
29 Aug 2026 20:19:59
There's actually a tonne of logical reasons to play Gakpo on the RW.
Iraola interchanges his wingers. He focuses on the matchups, and he will experiment in these early stages to see what works and what doesn't.
He certainly didn't play Gakpo RW to make him look bad for a sale. More likely, in the event that he stays, he was checking out whether Gakpo could play RW with Barcola playing LW. First game wasn't perfect out there, but I would say it's a possibility he can work there. He did get a wicked assist and some other good moments.
I know you probably want Iraola to know his best 11 from the off, but it takes experimentation to find out what works well with his systems and what doesn't.
Training is great, but you need to see it in a live game to see if it truly works.
I don't see the Gakpo experiment as a failure. More eye opening for me than anything. Definitely not faultless, but he was a lot more promising there than I thought he would be.
Honestly, I get the vent, but it's all a work in progress. Saying there's no logical reason for the decision is just wrong though.
I do agree that I would not sell Gakpo either, though. Might be a wage balancing thing. He is highly paid.
29 Aug 2026 20:24:08
Is that you Cody?
{Ed666's Note - 😆
29 Aug 2026 20:27:46
Gakpo is simply not good enough. He cannot defend, he isn't quick, stop stat gazing and watch his contributions over the full games. I simply can't grasp how people cling to mediocrity just coz there's the odd goal or cross out of 300 attempts. Raise your expectations, people, we are Liverpool, not Spurs.
29 Aug 2026 20:27:56
I agree, but here's the thing... Gakpo is the best we have on the right at the moment.
Good assist today.
{Ed666's Note - is that you Mrs Gakpo?
29 Aug 2026 20:28:27
David Ornstein has said Gakpo wants City, the deal is progressing. Will be a mistake if we don't get bodies in. Maybe this is the next part of the window to enable more deals. If Savino is £85, it should be close to that.
{Ed666's Note - I honestly can’t see him going to City but it makes sense because it’s not a massive geographical move and may not even have to move house. And maybe Ornstein will get a transfer right for once.
29 Aug 2026 19:23:29
We shouldn’t need to be spending more and more to be able to beat a very average Notts Forest at home. The excuses that get rolled out are borderline pathetic for a first team that’s been assembled for the cost of ours, and on the wages we pay.
There’s something fundamentally wrong with the mentality of some of this group of players. Although the quality is lacking in places they should be able to grind a result out, but they lack conviction and killer instinct as well as quality and consistency.
It’s not an easy fix for Iraola. So many posters last year said this was all on the system that Slot was playing, or it was a fitness thing. When Iraola turned up everything would be transformed. It hasn’t been, even though we’ve also added several players to the first team. This reminds me a bit of the early days of the Man Utd decline under the Glazers, with overpaid prima donnas, when they also lost Fergie’s eye for a player, and their instinct in the market.
29 Aug 2026 20:33:45
Very very very few posters thought Iraola was going to wave a magic wand.
Players are trying to adapt. Lots of new information and a very different system to last season.
You can call it an excuse, but it's very logical if you think about it.
Some players will end up not suiting the system properly and end up leaving. But some who look out of place now will adapt and improve massively. Time will tell who is who. By Christmas, we should have a decent idea from a player perspective.
I think Isak has been horrendous two games running. He could still end up being a star man for the team, or he could be the absolute dud he has looked in the system so far.
It's ridiculous to draw any final conclusions after 2 games. I like that Iraola is experimenting. I think he is learning a lot right now.
So players, I'll probably judge around Christmas time. That's my personal feeling. If they haven't adapted by then, then it's a long shot they are the right fit in my book.
Iraola will need longer, as once the ones found wanting are identified, he will need to replace and then we can see where he lands. He needs time.
I still have massive faith in his ability.
Looks like we will have this early rough patch to navigate first though. It will be rocky, I suspect.
Still though. Undefeated.
{Ed666's Note - love it mate. Glass half full..keep it up davey it’s gonna be a long season
29 Aug 2026 20:34:36
He has inherited a squad with too many players who aren't up to standard. I shall list them
Mama
Tsimikas
Kerkez
Frimpong
McAllister
Endo
Chiesa
Elliott
Gakpo
Rio
That's a lot to replace, so don't expect miracles from the manager, many of the players simply aren't good enough and he has to play them with Bradley and Ekitike injured and no depth whatsoever in wide areas.
{Ed666's Note - post of the hour mate
29 Aug 2026 19:08:25
Camara is not suited to LFC’s game as much as he is to Chelsea’s and therefore I feel he will be joining them and that we will be after someone else
I maybe someone left of field. Szob is not a CM and needs to play RM or become the new Trent at RB.
