"Win or lose, Southgate has given England hope again. Don't listen to the haters - the 53-year-old is the best coach the Three Lions have had for 50 years and has unified a fractious nation"

Woaah. What have I missed? That's the headline of a football website. All I can say is there has certainly been no "unification of a fractious nation". The divide is still very much there and better smell the roses.

Southgate is a great manager… for Manchester United.

07 Jun 2024 12:34:03
He probs is the best coach we've had results wise in a long time you can't deny that, I would assume unifying a nation football wise I'd say they have done that just because a section of football fans from club football don't like England doesn't mean everyone does. shock horror a Liverpool fan likes England national team.

50 years?

So better than Bobby Robson, Terry Venables, Sven, Capello.

Ok he’s probably better than McLaren and Taylor but it’s close.

07 Jun 2024 13:50:25
Hope, as in the standard across football has dropped massively. I'd expect england to win in all honesty.
If they didn't he's a failure.
The standard has become a joke.

I’m praying he ends up at United. Can you imagine how funny that would be ?.

07 Jun 2024 15:52:11
I think Southgate has been more successful than any of those managers Ron.

07 Jun 2024 17:57:41
@ArAy1969 wait, who said this?

@VV bro, I am hoping that happens cos the memes would be absolutely legendary.

07 Jun 2024 21:55:30
Really Rover?

Maybe have another look at that. Southgate has won nothing and only managed to get Middlesbrough relegated.

Capello won titles all over Europe and European cups
Sven won titles
Venables won La Liga
Graham Taylor didn’t win much but got Watford promoted from the 4th division to runners up in the first division
Bobby Robson league titles cups and European cups all over Europe.

You also have to look at the players at his disposal and the standard of teams he’s up against.

08 Jun 2024 00:01:37
Ron, I believe Rover was simply talking about England.

In terms of England he has taking the team to a World cup semi final and quarter final and a Euro final. Compare that to the mess of Capello, the missed opportunities of Sven and turnip head Taylor. Robson in Mexico and Italy was on on a par results wise and Venables, at home, got to the semis against Germany.

None of them won anything! But in terms of going deep into a major tournament, Southgate's record stands up.

As in …. I hope we beat Iceland ?

08 Jun 2024 08:32:55
Correct Potclay. He is manager of England after all ?‍♂️.

08 Jun 2024 08:22:40
Potclay - success = winning and Southgate has won nothing, at any level of management.

Saying he’s the best manager in 50 years implies he’s won something the others haven’t.
In reality he’s the least successful manager England have had.
‘famous for his waistcoat’ says it all.

Southgate is not a good manager in my opinion. The strengths of the England team are clearly in midfield and up top with our frailties being GK and defence. Setting up as he does further exposed those weaknesses rather than trying to exploit our strengths. If this squad wins anything, which they won't based on last night's results (I didn't watch it to be fair because I don't really care but come on. with all due respect Iceland) it will be inspire if Southgate rather than because of him.

08 Jun 2024 10:30:00
And yet all those managers you mentioned Ron flopped at the England job. So much for a winning mentality ?‍♂️. Southgate has had more success as an England managers than all those winners you have mentioned. He also has the balls to pick players outside the “top 4” that most other previous managers did. He’s not my international manager so I don’t really care and he might wear a waistcoat but I’m not sure if that’s a crime or not but he has done better than previous managers.

08 Jun 2024 14:00:28
Success is based on honours/ trophies.

Southgate has none as a manager.

The others have multiple trophies.

Therefore Southgate has no success.

You can argue all you want Irish but anyone who has watched the game would say Southgate is not the most successful manager England have had for 50 years.
Successful at what? Losing to Iceland? Yeah, he’s had great success in that department.

08 Jun 2024 16:13:18
2nd highest win percentage of any England manager Ron, even after last night ?.

09 Jun 2024 05:39:14
That’s just another example of statistics being meaningless though @TIR.
