Gotta be honest, Toney impressed out me yesterday. Looks like the player we were hoping Darwin would be.

Give the lad a chance, he’s only been here 5 minutes.

OP, was Toney playing in the CL and banging in goals vs Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern while scoring 30+ goals in a top league and winning Player Of The Year at age 22? If the answer is no then, your comparison with Toney (who I love, btw) isn't worth much, IMO. Let the kid develop and give him time and that is IF, you really want him to succeed.

Totally agree Ollie. This constant bashing of our own players needs to stop. By this I mean when it's early on in their career. New country, new langauge, new system etc. Have some patience.

At the same time, it is clear how many variables play a part in signings being succesful or not.
Klopp has thrown down the gauntlet to Nunez regarding learning English and the counter-press, which will be the real test for the lad.
We should know mid way through next season.

MartyMcfly11 bro, Im not even talking about bashing players cos as much as I love Darwin and tons of LFC fans love him to pieces as well, he should have scored at least once yesterday and we can criticize him while at the same time, back and support him to do well. If football was that binary, nobody would watch it nor care for it, IMO.

To me, It is these types of empty comparisons like this btw Darwin and a player who has literally achieved way less than this kid has at the same age. At 22, Toney was on loan at Scurnthorpe and was eventually released by Newcastle. Is that who we are comparing to Darwin at the same age? Again, we can critique a player's performances while at the same time recognizing his strenghts and supporting him till the end. We don't need to resort to what I think are mind-numbing comparisons.

It's a question of preference. Toney is your classic hard nosed, physical, straightforward, bullying striker (I like him a lot too and wanted the club to buy him last summer to replace Origi) . But he doesn't fit into Klopp's preference for his forwards, I think. Klopp likes either speedsters (Salah, Diaz, Nunez) or technical, silky forwards (Firmino, Gakpo, Jota) . Klopp will always go for the speedster when choosing against a player like Toney.

Let's be patient with Nunez a bit. He scored 26 goals in 28 League games and 34 goals in 41 played in total, last year (no matter how low you think that league is) . The 65 million price tag didn't come out of thin air.

I like Darwin he definitely has the talent to make it here’s hoping he does but as a side note Toney looks a real handful
Up the pool.

I really like Darwin and want him to succeed. I just don’t think our system suits his qualities well at all. He isn’t quite good enough on the ball to play the false number 9, he doesn’t link up play well. And it’s a similar story on the wing, very much straight line running, again link up is not great. Having said that, he’s an absolute goal threat, just think the overall team level drops a little with him in the team at the mom. I really hope he settle and proves all of the above wrong and I’ll be supporting him along the way.

I suspect his gambling charges will rule him out of getting a move to a big club.

I don’t think that’s fair. I posted at length about Darwins deficiencies the other day, but I still like him and hope he will come good. Toney is a very different type of striker and is a bit too old for our rebuild I suspect. I’m not going to bemoan the fact that we own Darwin and compare him to other forwards enjoying better form, I just feel he has a lot to improve upon. He deserves another year, I don’t think we need to bash him to that extent.

I’m going to really enjoy watching Nunez grow as a player, you can see so much raw potential in him.
I already think he’s doing pretty well considering his age and the fact it’s his first season, but you know there’s much more to come.
He’s in the right place with the right manager who will turn him into an incredible player for us.

Toney impressed me too. All that rolling around on the floor feigning injuries was epic.

ArAy1969 to your final point about the price tag, you are spot on. Darwin at 23 and doing g the bits that he did at Benfica was always going to look to step up to the next level. When you pay 65m for a kid seen as the next best thing, you are paying for potential (all deficiencies be damned), not certainty cos nothing is certain. If he was proven, we wouldn't have come near him nor been able to afford him.

That is the way it goes and other teams do this all the time with City signing Grealish for 100m or Utd signing Antony for the actual 85m in cash, 20m more than Darwin. Or Jude who will go to RM for 130m plus at 19. None of these players set their own price tags so using Darwin's price tag to berrate him with the redundant "For a guy who was signed for 85m, he should be. " is just plain lazy, IMO.

Either way it’s a big Summer for Nunez. He certainly needs to improve a fair bit, that might come down to a run in the team or a tweak in tactics. He can’t argue about his passion tho, but only gets you so far. I think he will be fine tho, just a bit rough around the edges at this time ?.

Did Toney score yesterday? I like him as a player in the right system but let’s not get all gooey eyed over another team’s player when we have better players, better suited to our system already in our squad.

Nunez will come good I have no doubts about it. In the next 2-3 years he’ll be talked about as being one of the best strikers in world football.

To be fair on Nunez people say he lacks footballing intelligence but the way he completely missed the ball on the cross from salah and pass from Trent which laid a goal on a plate for most striker was some real outside of the box thinking. If he doesn't even touch the ball then it can't count as a missed shot, very clever.

I don’t think that was as much of a dig as everyone else seems to. I quite Darwin but if the majority of you think the club splashed out £64 million for a player to become 5th choice I’d say you’re wrong.
I like him, but I would guess the club expected a little more.

Klopp has a reputation of starting players slowly and pulling them out of the limelight. He did that to Jones and look how well Jones is playing and settling now. I believe that Klopp is now doing the same thing to Nunez so I am not too bothered that he isn't starting or playing much now. I am confident that he will come good next season.
