Could Jacquet play in the number 6 role? He looks very tidy on the ball and could do a similar job to what Stones did at City. Not saying it’s the long term solution but could be worth a look.

No. You don't want a CB playing DM. It's not about standing in front of the back four. That's called 3 at the back.

I'd give Grav and Dom more time to figure it out. It was one game.

Or buy a good DM.

I don’t want to read any more Wharton connections or wishes; what we knew before is exactly what he showed last night.

He defends like Trent and I mean he jogs in slow motion as he watches his team mates do the running.

All he does is he floats balls forward and is a good passer ….

Only.

When I watch the Cherki goal he didn’t even try.

So please we have enough passes and pretty boys in the team - we have to hope next season we have a sporting director who recognises we need a different type of player.

What the hell is going on with our transfers? We spend weeks and months fannying about with PSG over Barcola and Mbaye, and now Villa come in and get a deal agreed in minutes!

We’ve become a shambles with transfers and all other clubs seem to know it!

Seems like we walked away from Mbaye.

Maybe, PSG forcing our hand to come back in with a higher bid????

Few late deals I'm watching 👀

Darío Osorio, 22, RW
Contract to 2030. Liverpool have already enquired and the reported price is around £17m. Everton, Leeds and Milan also interested. I think £20m-ish would be enough to test Midtjylland properly.

Francisco Conceição, 23, RW
Contract to 2030. Mendes has spoken to Liverpool and Chelsea, but it's still enquiry stage. No Liverpool bid yet. I'd expect it takes around £35m-£45m to make Juventus seriously consider it.

Ismaïla Sarr, 28, RW
Contract to 2029. Liverpool have already gone in at around £50m and Palace rejected it. Still being pursued. Probably needs £55m-£60m+ to change Palace's mind.

Yankuba Minteh, 22, RW
Contract to 2029. Liverpool bids of £50m and £60m rejected. Brighton want around £70m. Looks dead for now, but I still wouldn't completely rule out Liverpool biting the bullet late or going back in January.

Lamine Camara, 22, CM/DM
Contract to 2029. Offered to Liverpool as a late opportunity and Chelsea are now in talks. Palace had £35m rejected. Monaco want around £50m-£60m.

Fikayo Tomori, 28, CB/RB
Contract expires 2027. Liverpool enquired earlier this month. Milan have now frozen him out and want him gone. His current valuation is only around £10m-£13m. Cheap, quick, experienced and homegrown. Proper late opportunity.

Four days left. Still think there will be 3 more incomings late on.

Seems to me like it'll be Sarr or Minteh. If not, we just keep Gakpo and I guess Barcola will play RW in the short term.

Osorio's price is 20 million euros. Midtjylland's sporting director has said that publicly all window (to Danish media at least) and did another interview a couple of days ago saying that was the price they have been quoting clubs all summer.

So then you should just wonder why nobody has picked him up at that price if he is good enough for a top PL team.

Wharton was excellent tonight. Reminded me a bit of Gerard.

Gerrard had more legs and battle at 33 than Wharton has at 23.

I used to really like Wharton based mostly on watching him in the Championship. He also then looked good on MOTD and in the Conference League. But the more full Premier League games I watch him in, the more he looks like a total passenger out of possession.

Watch both of the Foden assists tonight. Wharton was just completely bypassed.

He also contested a 50/50 with Cherki and then stayed down for a minute holding his shin; wear proper shinnies, you clown. The worst one, though, was he tried to foul Anderson in the Man City RB area, hurt himself doing so, and took over a minute to get up and hobble back 60 yards into position.

Gerrard had his flaws, but you could never accuse him of not putting the boot in or showing weakness after a 50/50.

Not sure Wharton is what we need. However, at this point I'll take anyone.

Can't imagine we will be going into a new season with the same set of midfielders as last season, albeit with a new coach.

I'd rather have a solid combative midfielder than another winger after Barcola.

Wish we had gotten Anderson.

Personally, I think he is what we need. Someone who is not afraid to take on the difficult pass, first-time pass, and the vision to predict the movement of a forward player. He would encourage forwards to make runs. He passes through the opposition midfield, taking 4 or 5 players out of the equation.

At the moment, we pass across the midfield and not enough cutting forward passes.

He's not perfect, but he's young and far from his prime.

That's my opinion.

City look good. Seen 5 mins of that Bouadi and he’s a player.

If Iriola said no to Wharton as some have said, I'd be concerned. We need a top sporting director in ASAP.
We needed two midfielders since the beginning of the transfer window. If Jones goes as he did, Wharton made perfect sense.

Then also seek another "Iriola" player.
I just can't see us signing anyone of real quality now in midfield or on the right wing. Hughes can get away with this too as he swans of for Saudi money.

Some of his passing this evening has been beautiful, I am gutted that we haven’t gone for him. I know it would be difficult to get him out of Palace, but I would hate to see him in another shirt, one I would love in a Liverpool shirt is Wharton.

Let's hope he waves goodbye to his home fans tonight - if Carlsberg did signing.

Can anyone remember what the site was like summer of 2024 when we only picked up Chiesa? Then went on to win the league.

Everyone was saying the club had let Slot down and that we would struggle to get Champions League football.

28 Aug 2026 20:33:27
That squad had one glaring issue, a holding midfielder, that Slot solved brilliantly by playing Gravenberch there. This squad has about 4 glaring issues.

Can remember people not being happy that 3 of our 4 CBs were the injury prone Konate and Gomez, and a kid not seen as good enough in Quansah. While Vvd was seen as over the hill by some even then. That our centre forward options were an erratic Darwin and a never-fit Jota.

There was just a general realisation that while our rivals all strengthened, we signed only Chiesa. Everyone could see how that one would work out.

Recency bias and objectivity are major issues for some on these pages, FM.
