Looking more and more likely that this will be Salah’s final season with us. Ed001, I really like the look of doak and think he could be a star in the future but he’s very young, who would you bring in on that right side if and when salah does leave at the end of the season?

{Ed001's Note - to be honest I don't see anyone who could possibly come in and replace him, we missed out on Doku, so maybe Ferran Torres? Not sure of any one. Maybe the best option is Szoboszlai moving there and another midfielder coming in instead?}

As we try and get through this window of our rebuild next season could see us needing a defensive rebuild as well as losing our best player.

And then the following season will see us with a new manager.

I’ve seen this season being described as being in transition but it could be quite a few seasons before we’re back challenging for the two top honours.

I agree on Dom Szob.
Doak is still a long way off.

However, replacing players like Salah is unrealistic.

You have to get a different type of player and adapt.

Ed001 If we finish top 4 I don’t see Salah leaving next season to go to the Saudi league when champions league football is on offer.
So fingers crossed at least 2 more seasons and if the Saudi league is still investing maybe then but you never know the chinese league did not carry on. The money is good but am not sure what the crowd attendance is like over there and the crowds do drive players so we will see if the players going over there enjoy more than just the money.

I think Szobozlai will end up on the right hand side instead of Salah eventually. Trent could play in a more advanced midfield role. Gapko/ Diaz on the left.
I can just imagine the type of service those players could give to a fast, direct, tall and powerful centre forward!

To be honest the club won’t be thinking about this just “because Salah is likely to be moving on next year” but because he’s “getting on and another year will be one year older and likely another year less effective”. There comes a time in everyone’s career when your truly best years are behind you and even if a couple of very decent years left the club have to be considering what next - always one step ahead. Remember though, same applies to our opposition! Who’s going to replace KDB etc etc. natural progressive age related churn!

Not sure we missed out on Doku at age 15, Ed01. Ferran Torres? I don't rate him, personally.

As to who could replace him. Khvaratskhelia is not a bad shout by C0ffan. My dream was Federico Chiesa at Juve before his injury. He would be perfect for us, IMO. But we will see how well he recovers from his injury esp this season.

When it does happen, hopefully not anytime soon, it would be an opportunity to change the setup for Lucho and Darwin as a pair that can work off each other.

We could also implement the box midfield with 4 at the back instead - ie a 4222 and give Szoboszlai and Trent free right of the right hand side.

As for Salah-like players - the Turkish kid who just signed for Real would have been up there I would think. And then Moussa Diaby who signed for Villa just now.

If only we could prize Saka away from Arsenal.

For me Szoboszlai looks like a great number 8 maybe a player to replace Gerrard as a goal scoring midfielder that we have not really had since. So to more him I think we lose him there in the ball more when we signed Salah nobody was expecting what we got so am sure with Diaz and Gakpo we do have the start of a new front 3 and with Darwin hopefully going to improve maybe he could play from the left and Diaz from the right there seems a lot of goals there for me.
