Any thoughts about making Joe Gomez right back and just keeping Trent in midfield. I’m
not convinced about him moving between one position the other. It’s just crying out to be exploited by the opposition team. I do not think you can build a system around a player’s weakness.

We have played 3 at the back when in play since the last 8 or so games of last season. This has has been continued right through pre-season so safe to say it will be deployed this season. If so we have to sign a quality left sided centre back and a DM. Lavia has to be wrapped up asap. Just offer close to what Southampton want and stop with this wait a week and then bid near enough the same amount as the last bid that was rejected.

Regarding a centre back signing I think we should match whatever City are offering for Gvardiol. With our system we need a quality centre back on that side because Robbo bombing forward in a back 3 just ain’t going to cut it in this system. I would then put Lavia on the right of the two man midfield, which would provide Konate with protection and have Trent on the left side where Gvardiol is. Trent is essentially roaming anyways but has the quality to ping balls from any side of the two man midfield that sit in front of the 3 centre backs.

I'd give young Bradley a shot at RB before Gomez. But clearly TAA has to be moved forward to the midfield; his limitations become so blatant when Matip is playing behind him. But I wonder if it creates more problems than it solves? I wouldn't start TAA ahead of Mac Allister or Szoboszlai (at least for now; we have to see the abilities of what we bought) . And I'm not sure about TAA as a DM. So that leads to benching your newly appointed vice-captain?

Klopp has very difficult decisions ahead of him, that's for sure.

I think it's time we went 3 2 2 3 full on and not this inverted full back. Robertson should be a full on LCB and stay wide like a lb. Konate rcb and Van Dijk CB. We don't play full backs. Think it goes a good way to solving problems. Inverted RB is clearly becoming a disaster because Robertson is playing lb when he should be playing LCB. This is clearly a management issue. 3 2 2 3 and we're back to the races I think. This formation is great going forward. This small adjustment can solve much (not all) of the defensive problems. I can't watch the inverted RB anymore. It's terrible.

Even when Gomez plays RB he stays wide instead of tucking in to RCB which should be a great position for him. I go as far to say this is the dumbest formation we have ever played. For the love of god, please give me a look at 3 2 2 3 which I thought originally we were going to do this pre season.

Ha any thoughts of Trent being benched should be er benched . I do get your point, where does Trent play, well it appears to me, that Trent can't play this new position with Matip behind him, only Konate has the speed and ability to cover for Trent,
what was wrong with the Greek lad today, he didn't need a shower after the game .
still lots of positives to be taken from this game, its clear that Ali in goal is one of the best in the world .
maybe with Big Virg given the Captains arm band, he might just give an extra ten per cent to his game,
talks of a left sided centre back needed, but a replacement for Matip is urgent, for me he is a major worry .

I agree ArAy. Trent’s attacking qualities are too good to leave him out, but his defensive skills make him a less than ideal choice for a DM. He clearly is at his best going forward and I think that this current new style puts too much pressure in the RCB and leave us exposed on the counter attack. The questions is, is Trent closer to being a complete full back or a compete midfielder. Only time will tell.

{Ed025's Note - incomplete at both I would say R/S..

I am pretty confident that Klopp will not have Gomez or Bradley as a regular starting right back.

I'm with you on this Razor. I don't think Gomez is good enough to be a first choice centre half for us (too many opportunities that he's not taken to nail it down as his own) but I think he's less of an exposure than Trent at right back and still half decent at getting forward and delivering a cross.

Makes us a bit stronger at right back whilst allowing the full conversion of Trent to midfield.

That said, I saw Trent more in the old Henderson right side of midfield role, rather than as the holding/ defensive midfielder in the Fabinho role. If we assume we're looking for a third midfielder to play alongside Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, then I don't know that it can be Trent.

I know you're a bitter end but you're the only person I've ever known who genuinely doesn't rate Trent.

{Ed025's Note - i think hes a great footballer TopG, i do think hes a bit of a Mars Bar though and loses concentration easily at times, still young though and could develop into a half decent midfielder..

9.) 02 Aug 2023
02 Aug 2023 17:47:07
Yes RR I don’t think we need a world class right back we just need someone who is solid defensively and disciplined in that area. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I’d rather do without the attacking qualities of a full back and know that we’re secure defensively. I know football has changed but I think for now Gomez is adequate with Bradley etc for back up knowing that we do not have the funds to buy a player for all the positions we need.

10.) 02 Aug 2023
02 Aug 2023 17:55:11
Perhaps if he wasn't being asked to play 3 positions at the same time he might be able to fully concentrate on a job.

{Ed025's Note - i think Trent plays wherever he decides he wants to play FPF, if he doesn,t want to play full back then Klopp will kow-tow and move him into midfield it seems to me mate, he will track back when and if he wants to, great talent but for me there are doubts over his attitude, just my view of course..

11.) 02 Aug 2023
02 Aug 2023 18:12:33
Come on Ed025. You know Trent doesn't decide where he plays. He's not that guy, as much a you'd like him to be. He's not Stevie G. On the same note, Hendo didn't decide to spend his time pushed up so far up top leaving massive gaps in front of Trent and nor is Robbo at fault looking like a fish out of water in this new system.

We have a lot of work to do to fine tune whatever this new approach is.

{Ed025's Note - time will tell i suppose FPF, i actually want him to do well mate which is probably why i might be slightly harsh on him, i like nothing better than to see a local lad make the grade, but i do have reservations about his demeanor at times..

12.) 02 Aug 2023
02 Aug 2023 18:15:59
Ed25, I don't believe a single word of what you have posted regarding Trent. So how do you know Trent plays wherever he wants to play? Do you have any eveidence to back this up or you're just talking based on what you see which is exactly what his coaches ask him to do?

Pretty sure if he was free-lancing as you are alleging, Klopp would have put him out to pasture for deliberately disregarding instructions and disrespecting Klopp, his team mates and the club. We all know Klopp suffers no fools and we know what happened to those who deliberately flouted his orders. See Mahmadou Sahko.

{Ed025's Note - your right Oli, i do comment on what i see, i saw last season how sloppy he was defensively and how disinterested he looked at times in the full back role...he had a face like a smacked arse, he then got his move to midfield and he looked a lot more comfortable there, plays some amazing through balls and crosses i will give you that mate, unfortunately the rest of his game is lacking in that position for me, the hustle, the tracking back, and the aerial prowess and tackling, now that may come with experience but at the moment he is a bit of a show pony, and i mean that in the nicest possible way..

13.) 02 Aug 2023
02 Aug 2023 19:06:38
Bitter ed, I meant wasn't calling you a bitter end.

{Ed025's Note - dont worry about it mate, water off a ducks back to me..

14.) 02 Aug 2023
02 Aug 2023 19:18:22
Ed025, what would you say if I told you Trent led the premier league for most tackles, interceptions and progressive passes in the last 10 games of the season ( when he was moved into the hybrid role), would that change your opinion on the hussle and tracking back?

{Ed025's Note - it would amaze me EPS, stats tend to tell what they want though mate and this lady is not for turning...as a witch once said.. :)

15.) 02 Aug 2023
02 Aug 2023 20:58:06
Ed25, VVD looked disinterested in the CB role last season,

{Ed025's Note - he did at times Oli and had a poor season by his standards, he was fighting a losing battle though with the tramps he had along side him mate, its a fine line between over confidence and apathy and maybe the skipper role will make him focus more this season, it could be the re-invention of him..

16.) 02 Aug 2023
02 Aug 2023 21:13:15
Crap, pressed send too soon. Ed25, so you are saying he had a terrible time last season just so he could play in midfield? So from where you were "watching", you concluded that Trent deliberately played crap and was disinterested cos he wanted to play in midfield and Klopp wouldn't let him hence, he sabotaged our season for his own personal gain? Wow, some illuminating observer you are that you could conclude all of that with no actual evidence nor proof to back it up.

No proof nor inside info of a bust up with Klopp over position switches? No inside info of Arguments with coaches and any of that? Just innuendos from seeing things you clearly wanted to see and to support whatever thought you had of him to begin with and assasinate his character and level such personal accusations that you literally could not provide any proof of?

You do know if Trent even dared to do 1% of what you acussed him of, Klopp would have him binned from the team, right? My goodness if that goes for player "analysis" these days then, count me out. Peace and Love.

{Ed025's Note - you are misinterpreting what i said Oli, i never once mentioned sabotage or in fact that his form fell off a cliff deliberately, what i do know is that he is a far better player than what he was showing at full back last season, you can blame players around him all you want mate but at times he looked apathetic and yes disinterested, when he moved to what was essentially a free role midfielder his mood changed and he seemed a lot happier and put in some good performances, glean from that what you will my friend..

We’ll said Ed 025?.

18.) 03 Aug 2023
03 Aug 2023 04:21:52
We'd have to agree to disagree on that Ed. Personally from my observations, I think he (and the rest of the team for that matter) was uncomfortable playing whatever role Klopp initially wanted him to play last season. The system of play we had early on was a shambles and it made all our players (bar Allison) look worse than they actually were. We only started to click later on in the season when the high press was back and when the system was tweaked slightly. I don't think last season's performance had anything to do with Trent being disinterested in playing RB anymore and having his sights set on CM.

03 Aug 2023 06:31:56
Trent’s best position is the one that Hendo occupied on the right side of a midfield 3 in the system that we won everything with - 433 and high press. Why we are persisting with a system that we don’t have the players for, that we are clearly not suited to and doesn’t work for us is just beyond me. We have good players, we should play to their strengths not fit them into some weird experimental system.

I agree West, I'm not sure about him as the holding midfielder tbh

For cb I agree with Alonso, match what City have offered for Gvardiol. BBC have it at 76m today - surely we could match that? I mean a club of our size would have to have that, no?

That would give us 3 strong cbs though I still feel we need a dedicated cdm.

21.) 03 Aug 2023

We bought Vvd for 75 mill and it had nothing to do with selling Coutinho as we aren’t a sell to buy club and FSG will back Klopp with anyone he wants.

No doubts our bid is inbound. Unless Klopp doesn’t want to spend money or Gvardiol is not the right fit.

{Ed002's Note - Gvardiol was never and isn't joining Liverpool.}
