I thought ojo changed the dynamic when he came on. He offered some much needed composure and looked a cut above the others. Bright future for him. considering all the factors surrounding the game and then having to play against the fantastic atmosphere Exeter created plus a terrible pitch and all of exeters players being well up for it I was immensely proud ynwa!

We re nearly half way through the season and what a crazy season it has been.
With so many underdogs performing at a fantastic level it's got me thinking.

1) why are the wealthier clubs struggling so much to dominate?
2) are wealthy teams paying way over the odds for bang average players?
3) do the players from smaller clubs want it more?
4) are all the usually dominate clubs getting there tactics wrong?

There must be some logical reasons as to why so many games are being won by the underdogs?

I think effort is one, but the likes of deeney he is big powerful quick and skilful, he would cut it at the big clubs in my eyes. The top defenders are trained to play against the agueros, Sanchez's and that, and maybe he crouch's and girouds but when they have so much power, hunger and ability it is hard to play against.

2.) 20 Dec 2015 23:08:32
We have arguably one of the biggest strongest most powerful striker in the league.

3.) 20 Dec 2015 23:10:18
Defenders surely have to deal with whatever is put in front of them? It seems as though the usual top 6 clubs don't have an answer for the smaller clubs who generally play counter attacking football and or exploit set pieces? Possession wise they are happy to take 30-40% but then make their few chances count. So therefore their defence is strong and their attacks effective. How are supposedly better or more expensive players and managers unable to come up with a plan to over come this? I mean mouriniho, van gaal, Klopp, pelligrinni, wenger have all drawn a blank? ( perhaps not wenger)

Depending on how you view it, ie: glass half full or empty, either the standard of players in general is getting better and the gap between say our players and watfords for example has gotten smaller, teams are more closely matched. That's where having either players in brilliant form like Vardy, Mahrez, Ighalo etc or having players that are real quality like Sanchez, Ozil, De bryne, De gea etc are making the difference and having a bigger impact. If 2 teams are out on the field with 1 having 11 let's call them prem quality players, the other team having 9 prem quality players but 2 either in red hot form or pure class that's where the difference is.

It's also about each teams circumstances whether there injury hit, how many games are they playing or squad depth, new manager, overall team form and performances, are they learning different styles of play, fitness and let's say there's 3 types personal, match and mental, and confidence, do they trust each other, recent results, is there team over or under performing.

take us for example, let's say we field 11 prem quality players ( leaving player opinion out of it for now) of which 2 are returning from injury, say 2-3 have played nearly every game in the league and cups, there all learning a new system, we have a new manager, our recent results havnt been flash resulting in low confidence not only as a whole, where we can't seem to keep a clean sheet as a team or score either with individual brilliance or by breaking the opposition down. But confidence individually players know there not performing and are effected by it. Our fitness is lacking, was at the start of the season, Klopp comes in every starts playing like their very lives depend on it and that takes it toll and quickly too, 1 or 2 of these as minor issues can be overcome but we have a raft of them and there effecting nearly every player in our squad, then we play Watford with there 11 prem quality players who are flying high, have won four in a row, there near the top of the table, there relatively fresh and fighting fit for there style of play, full of confidence and belief in themselves and each other and BAM BAM BAM they win 3-0 whilst looking a class above.

Your right in what you say zimbo he has some great qualities I accept that and I like all those things about him. As I be said he has a great attitude and work ethic. My point is not oh we should sell him or give the armband to someone else there would be no point. It just my view on the player and I suppose the the team. We are at a point where he is the best option for his position and the captaincy however I think it demonstrates what we are lacking. i Think it's unfair on hendo that he has been given the captaincy and the pressure It brings effects his play and development. There really are no other players close to being up to the mark so he was the reluctant choice rather than nailed on. If we had a stronger squad with more developed players I really don't think he'd be captain. And before people start saying stop the bashing I'm just having a grown up debate about my team which Is what I come to the site for. I love hendo because he's our captain that doesn't mean I have to think he's the best player ever no matter what!

Brilliant! Go down the pub and describe Henderson as a player with flair and vision and gauge the response. What a load of rubbish.

Love the response! He doesn't it's a shame you can't see it he plays percentages and has no flair or vision. On top of that he doesn't score goals. Defensively he's a massive part of the press but positionally he has a long way to go. you only have to look at the man who gave him the armband to know it was a bad decision.

I want him to impact games both defensively and offensively. I want to watch the game and notice his contribution. For me he is a workman on the field and no more. I rightly or wrongly believe all players should be like this as standard. Cm captain should be more than a workhorse in my view. I'm not trying to bash him he behaves like a footballer should and bloody works his socks off. Just my view on him over the last few seasons that's all. I know you can't expect him to win games for us like Gerard dos at times but he do will never be a game changer and I think I'd we had better players who had been at the club for a few years he wouldn't be wearing the armband.

Redman11

{Ed001's Note - he does impact games, that is your fault if you can't see it.}

That seems like a lifetime ago now eh eds : ( I take your point but there was no can or Milner to cover his job it was him or Lucas alongside our ageing hero. He also had the most potent attacking force in our history sat in front of him. When that disappeared literally we became toothless. Hendo was and is unable to drag us up to standard or through a game. We ve seen it over the last two seasons.

Redman11

{Ed001's Note - so you mean he is unable to do it all on his own, that means he is not good enough? I really do not understand what you want from him. We are a better team with Hendo in it, surely that should be all that matters?}

I think we have to play sturidge he s the most dangerous man we have. His confidence is low he s not at 100% due to his recovery but a big goal could cure a lot of ills. A half fit sturidge is still dangerous for me.

Jurgen I think your spot on hendo is definitely not a player to build a team around. He not too class in any aspect of the game apart from running around a lot bless him. Captain no way! A poster listed his pro's and cons above and I think they were spot on and certainly don't read like a a cv for a midfield captain for now and the future.
Yes he been injured this season so not at 100% but even when at 100% he still doesn't possess the attributes. The system we currently play requires him to be a deep lying mid when he is naturally box to box. He has never developed as a box to box because of Bodgers constant changes and mismanagement of every player in the squad. Hendo does not fit his current position and the system ain't changing.
With regards to his injury costing us the title? Ho home your drunk.
A great lad works hard but not enough if we want to move forward. Everything behind the front three is on thin ice and is replaceable watch this space.

Never in a month of Sunday's did hendo s ban cost us the title. The pressure did. Poor management did. A woeful defence did. hendo s absence had nothing to do with it. He did have probably his best season to date granted but what happened the following season when Suarez left?

Your argument completely falls down as you seem to forget that Suarez made the whole team look far better than they were hence the capitulation when he left. Our defence was woeful in that season we simply had three forward players bang on form because Suarez caused that many problem for the opposition that space opened up for the other two to exploit. Henderson did not stop us from winning the title at all suarez's brilliance got us to second place and his ridiculous behaviour eventually lost us for it. Henderson isn't the player we all want him to be and if he wasn't captain your view wouldn't be so blurred. Jordan Henderson is an average player who works very hard and has a great attitude. If he wasn't captain when Klopp arrived do you think he would be now?

Redman11

{Ed001's Note - but it is true that we were not as good without Hendo, so his argument does not fall down. In fact, we got just as good results while Suarez was out banned as we did when he played, that season.}

I'll say the dreaded words. Henderson is nowhere near the standard of a centre midfield Liverpool captain. Working hard and being a good guy are not enough. He simply lacks ability. He was bought for his potentential which he has simply not fulfilled. A good all round player but certainly not one who can change a game or turn the tide. At mid 20's I can't see him turning out to be the player we all want to be : (
