Top review, thanks. We must improve.

{Ed001's Note - now I am worried, you agree with me! I need to note this down in my diary, I think this is the second time ever.}

Is it panic stations yet Ed001?

{Ed001's Note - well mark agreed with me so it must be! Oh you mean the football? Naw Paisley's team had worse days than that and just used it to drive them on. The time to worry is when they don't react to a defeat.}

Spot on with your review Ed01. Do you think this is a particular weakness of Klopp to continually play players who are woefully out of form? In Robertson's case, I know he is a fans favourite and has put in brilliant performances previously, but he has not played well now for quite a while and still gets selected.

{Ed001's Note - no, it is common practice to allow a player to play his way back to form.}

The frustration, for me, is seeing negative tactics like West Ham’s come out on top.
For the entire first half they did nothing but defend deep.
They actually came out and played for 30 minutes in the second, then back in their shell.
Tortoise’s head in more ways than one 😀
We didn’t play well though Mane’s chance at the end could have rescued it.
It may sound churlish but that West Ham performance was almost football’s lowest denominator.
Corners out of Kevin Nolan’s Bolton scrapbook, massed defence, and hit on the counter. Unfortunately it proved enough on the day.

It was driving me mad how narrow trent was for what seemed the entire 90 minutes. Especially with how poor robbos delivery was. If ever a game was crying out for kostas ans trent to be glued to the touchline this was it.

To be fair to Robertson, finding a player to hit in amongst the (minimum) 8 West Ham players crowded in the penalty area was difficult.
He was trying to pull the ball back into space but no one else in a Liverpool shirt had cottoned on.

{Ed001's Note - the optimum in that position is on the edge of the 6 yard box as there is a good chance of an OG then. Pulling it back is always going to fail unless you actually pass it to someone, as they have the benefit of numbers coming out on to the ball then.}

It’s not the defeat that worries me ed, it’s the consistent trends. I completely agree with what you said about in-game intuition. We seem completely incapable of controlling a game once we put ourselves in a strong position and Klopp is too reluctant to make changes. I must say i am worried.

Fair enough Ed.
I agree about your on-field adaptation too, I’m always amazed just how little detailed instruction was given to the old Liverpool teams when you hear people like Souness speak.
Although if anyone can remember Ronnie Moran making himself heard at games, there was usually a whisper in the ear to remind them 😂.

{Ed001's Note - they were not robots like now, because they grew up playing in mess around games where they had to play all positions. Nowadays they are in academies and not playing out with their mates learning the game without even realising it.}

Trent tucking into midfield has been an intermittent feature of the season, albeit West Ham was probably the most extreme example of it.

I understand the thinking behind it - That opposition teams are going to pay attention to Trent bombing down the wing and make sure to have their left winger track him, whereas Hendo is more likely to be able to drift out there without being tracked and get into some space. It also let's Salah pick whether to go inside or outside because of the extra space. And Trent has the quality to pick out crosses and passes from the channel as well as the wing.

But in practice it's not working, Trent is getting fewer crosses in, so the best part of his game is diminished and he's still out of position if we turn over the ball, and now so is Hendo cos he's attacking the flank.

We have enough ability to work a space for Trent to get crosses in even if he is closely monitored, just go back to letting him bomb down the outside all the time. It's worked for 3 years.

Ed love Thiago, but when he came on he was awful. Gave it away 3 times in 5 minutes I think Carra picked up on it. His period away from the pitch can be his excuse though I imagine.

Ed, speaking of Carra, one thing that annoys me is his annoying false act of acting excited and screaming when the other team scores against us. It’s like he doesn’t want to be called biased so starts screaming and it’s just so obvious. I never want to have him commentate on a Liverpool game again!

{Ed001's Note - and who was he meant to pass to when everyone else was stood watching him? Bollox to Carra, like all pundits he is useless.}

Brilliant review Ed1. Especially about the in game adaption. I have been saying that we don’t seem to adapt to anything anymore. The leaders in the side should recognise something that keeps happening in game and think for themselves to adapt to try and counteract it. Also Hendo’s positioning was baffling but hopefully the guys wake up and we get back to winning ways.

{Ed001's Note - thank you Alonso. It is frustrating especially when it is something as obvious as protecting the keeper on a corner.}

Not sure about the fixation some people have developed with Thiago. When he was actually able to play with Fabinho behind him in the "no.6" role regularly last season he played well and I have no reason to think he won't do it again this season.

{Ed0666's Note - His handicap is stating fit: if he does he’s a valuable cog if not I would get rid in the summer

His pattern seems to be to get a moderate or severe injury and then stay fit for a while, rather than a new little niggling injury every month. I think he'll largely stay fit for the season from now.

At this moment in time, I'd have Keita and Ox for the chop ahead of him. Obviously that may change during the season depending on fitness and form.

Great read, Ed. The lack of in gale adaptation is what irked le the most and that was my first beef right after the gale. Even at amateur level, there is no way we would have allowed two oppo players crowd our GK and not adapt. That was rank incompetence on the players’ side vs WH and this is not the first time.

Vs Burnley in 18/ 19, sale thing happened when Tarkowski was left on his own to man handle Ali on a corner and the ref let it go. That must never happen again.

As for player and manager performances go, we have to play better and definitely coach better cos Klopp messed up big time in all phases of the game, IMO. The players as well need to take responsibility and handle their business on the pitch, like they used to. As for the Thiago fixation, it getting desperate now to the point of outright obsession. We go again.
