I know it's not an Everton page but there's been quite a bit of chat about Everton's plight and it's always interesting to hear from Ed25. As a Liverpool fan and given the way that the relationship between the rival fans seems to have soured so much, I have to say there is a part of me that won't be too disappointed if Everton do get relegated. However, I do still have a nostalgic appreciation for Everton when I think of the mid 80s. That is about the time I first got interested in football. I remember that Everton were, at that time, the closest to challenging Liverpool and actually edged ahead of them at times.

1985 - Everton won the league, finishing way ahead of Liverpool. They also went to the FA Cup final and lost in extra time to the only goal of the match against Manchester Utd. And they won the European Cup Winners Cup. By any standards, that is a season that is up there with the best, within a whisker of doing the double when it was still a very rare achievement.

1986 - Liverpool did the double in Dalglish's first season but Everton finished second in the league, just two points behind Liverpool, and were also the beaten finalists in the FA Cup again. They pushed one of the great Liverpool teams all the way.

1987 - Everton won the league by a significant margin again. Liverpool second.

What Kendall did with Everton in this period has to be up there with some of the great managers in my opinion but doesn't get mentioned so much. They didn't really have superstar players from memory. Southall was outstanding of course and arguably the best in the world at that time. And they had very good international players like Ratcliffe, Stevens, Steven, Sheedy and Sharp but they always seemed like a team that was greater than the sum of its parts. Yes they had Lineker but I think he only stayed one season before going to Barcelona, and actually that was the 85/ 86 season when they didn't win anything.

It's impossible to know for sure but easy to speculate about what Everton might have gone onto if the European ban hadn't started immediately after they won the league in '85. They never got the chance with that team to play in the European Cup. Given that they had just finished comfortably ahead of Liverpool to win the league and Liverpool had played in the last two European Cup finals and English clubs had won it in seven of the previous nine seasons, it seems perfectly reasonable to assume that Everton would have had a very good chance of winning the European Cup.

{Ed025's Note - great post that RR i really enjoyed that mate cheers, and i agree with all of that..

Are Everton better than Jota?

I still see the affection for our blue nosed neighbours in so much as to say it would destroy the cities rivalry so it would be tragic in lots of ways, but it does look like this is the start of a new phase in football and the teams that don't adjust will rust, it only takes some terrible investment or a bad choice in manager to kill a very iconic football club, and the blues are the perfect example.

Unfortunately, if/ when Everton get relegated I think they will just keep going down through the leagues and even a danger to their very existence with the debt they have hanging over their head and the looming weight of a points reduction.
It might be a very long time before we see them in the Premier League again, if ever, and that will be bad for the city but also a warning to every club in the league.

Sorry but i had to laugh at a section of that post:

1985 ……. that is a season that is up there with the best, within a whisker of doing the double when it was still a very rare achievement.

1986 - Liverpool did the double in Dalglish's first season

No offence intended.

I've got to agree with the OP, I also started following Liverpool in the 80s and I remember the great battles mid-late 80s between the two best teams on Merseyside and the League (and possibly Europe, albeit Hysel put paid to that) .

It will be sad to see Everton go down, and with the chain of events that 025 has described above, it may prompt a Portsmouth-esque spiral which will be really sad. Not least as it will leave Arsenal as the longest standing club in the top division!

Ed2> (, Everton's hurting bad, man. Should you guys get relegated, not sure when you'll get back up esp with a points deduction or transfer ban. Should you guys stay up miraculously and you get a transfer ban, you will definitely go down next season with no players coming in.

If you get a points deduction depending on how many, you could still go down next season. Regardless of abny way you look at this, it's a disaster waiting to happen. I hope Im wrong. Peace and Love.

{Ed025's Note - i think you are right oli...and i dont say that very often mate.. :)

I wanted Everton to stay up, then i saw Ed025 going after Gakpo. Look at how they massacred my boy!

Now I hope they go down ? only kidding Ed025. Mad that they've not been relegated since 1951! Back when you were in your early 30's. Crazy.

{Ed025's Note - i have no axe to grind with Gakpo Mk i just think hes a bit overrated, there is a first time for everything mate and it looks like its our turn this year, i was not alive in 51 but i cant believe they would be worse than this current car crash of a team, my age has been exaggerated on here and im still very attractive to the females of merseyside...thats why locally im known as the gateacre stud muffin.. :)

Both sides were top class back then. I reckon Liverpool would have had at least another European Cup without the ban.

{Ed025's Note - everton would have at least 3 mark, we were a class side then mate, and then moshiri came.. :(

I'm not saying you're old Ed025. However Ed001 told me you were King Henry VIII's best man at 4 of his weddings.

{Ed025's Note - yeah i was MK but i didn,t like that jane seymour, bit of an actress if you ask me mate.. :)

Sorry Ed25 but I don’t believe many who say they want everton to stay up. I want Everton to get relegated. Don’t get this same city rubbish. I’ve lived in the city for years. You think ManU wouldn’t want ManCity relegated or spurs not laughing if arsenal went down.

The footy rivalry has been toxic for years - even Ef25 has said he hasn’t been for years due to this - and I don’t think most blues would give two hoots if we got relegated.

Alls fair in love and war and for me the club has been badly mishandled so I do feel sorry for some of the true fans but that’s life.

Having said all of that I have a feeling you’ll fluke it though will you get a points deduction next season
Due to FFP so could simply be another stay of execution but at least you’d have another chance and right now I’m guessing you’d grab that!

{Ed025's Note - i will have friendly rivalry 1jj and i love the banter, but i for one wont miss the toxic derbies mate, i know a lot of reds will be celebrating our demise and if the shoe was on the other foot im sure the blues would do the same, there is nothing wrong with that in my book as long as its not fuelled by hate..

Liverpool (the city) is a great place. Everton, albeit never being as good as the Reds, are a part of the fabric of the city. Their decline makes the city poorer. Anybody remember when Tranmere had to win the last game of the season to make sure they didn’t drop out of Division 4 into non-league? I lived in New Brighton at the time and had only ever seen about 3 or 4 live Tranmere games but I went to watch the match. I couldn’t get in because the ground was full and they’d shut the gates. You either get what I’m saying or you don’t. If you get what I’m saying you understand, if you don’t get it you’ll never understand what I’m saying.

Great Post RR, that's the times I got into football as well and my nostalgic memories of Everton would be from that period too a rivalry, but friendly enough - sad the toxicity that has crept into both sides.

{Ed025's Note - it was a great time to be a merseysider bill, sadly we will never see those times again mate which is a massive miss for the younger generation mate..

1jj. Totally get your point and 100% agree on the Manc's/ Cockney's and any other city, however I (and I may be in the minority) believe as "We are Scouse, this means more".
Hopefully our Blue neighbours can find what appears to be the elusive rabbit and pull in out of the hat. YNWA.

Ed25 I know this is the Liverpool page but.
You are clearly not happy with the current Everton squad (to say the least) . But who from the current players do you feel are pulling their weight or are good enough to play for Everton. Shouldn't take you long to list them.
By the way I am not one of those who would prefer to see relegated. Everton should be in the Premier League. can't get excited about facing Burnley, Sheff Utd, Luton or Coventry.

{Ed025's Note - Coleman is knocking on a bit now Gaga but always gives his all, iwobi tries but is a headless chicken, DCL is talented but the catwalk has more appeal to him than football mate...the rest are Turkish Delight..
