What a read that was.

Seemed to be a man of firsts (many many may firsts) and way ahead of his time.

Going by that article mr kay dug the foundations and laid the concrete for where liverpool are today.

Not only has his work been forgotten as you said in the article but im sure for a lot of people (myself included) it has never even been known. Which going by your article is not just a shame but criminal in terms of respecting legacy.

Thanks for that ed. Immensely enjoyable read.

{Ed001's Note - I was surprised myself. I knew nothing about the guy before I started my research.}

WOW Ed! That was one of the best pieces I've read on this site and that's saying a lot. Fantastic stuff. I loved everything about it. The Joe Lewis nugget was interesting, I had no idea. My grandfather always said that he was the all time greatest heavyweight that he ever saw. Thank you for that.

{Ed001's Note - he was my grandad's hero and he would often talk about meeting him during the war.}

Man before his time. Great article ed.

Ah bloody hell Ed1 I needed something like this, what a top quality read that was. I have to admit I had no idea about the man until this so I have to thank you for your research because that's a very interesting read. Whoever hasn't read this I strongly advise you to do so.

{Ed001's Note - you are not the only one who knew nothing about him! I was so ignorant before my research I feel ashamed.}

Wow! Ed, what a fascinating article. Thank you for the time and effort. I'm sorry to say I hadn't heard of Kay but he seemed to have been well ahead of his time and deserves to be a household name (in Liverpool at least) . To think how different the history of LFC would be without him!

My fave quote from the article, from Albert Stubbins: 'Fortunately we won, but George Kay was so upset with me afterwards that he took me out for tea after the game. '

Ed001- can I make a suggestion for your articles? When you post the link, could you give a one-sentence synopsis please? For instance for this one it would be as simple as 'The manager who brought Liddel, Paisley and Shanks to LFC'. It's just that I read and also really enjoyed your recent article re the most successful American Football team based only on your discussions with another poster on a completely unrelated thread, which made it sound really interesting. Otherwise, as I don't really follow AF, I probably wouldn't have clicked on it. Just a thought.

Thanks again. Loving this series and learning a whole lot. This site is becoming a message board crossed with wikipedia!

{Ed001's Note - that is a good idea mate. I will have a word with Ed033 about altering the links to add something like that, thank you. I have to admit, that American football is not my thing at all and I would never have written the article if I hadn't come across the ESPN documentary on the team, which piqued my interest. So I can see what you mean.}

Thanks Ed. Absolutely loved this one - brought about a fuzzy set of emotions from deep within.
Seems to be an absolute shame to not have heard anything about Kay. We should suggest LFC tv to do a piece on him.

{Ed001's Note - I have to admit I am really surprised more isn't made of him, considering he signed some legendary players, even bringing Shanks in as a player and that he was such a huge influence on Matt Busby's managerial career. He deserves to be more widely remembered.}

Just been reading the Tyson one again since 5 lol absolutely bloody fantastic. Question Ed and this will probably be a difficult one to answer but, which of your articles was most enjoyable to research?

I think as a reader it's difficult to pick a favourite because all of your work is exceptional but it has to be out of this one, the Tyson one or the Cruyff one for me, but then there's the Gatti one, ah I give up, all of them are fantastic, keep them coming Ed mate.

{Ed001's Note - I would say Cherno Samba, as I knew him only from the game and Liverpool's attempt to sign him. Everything else was new to me and it was fascinating to read how someone could go from having the world at his feet to obscurity because he let his head be turned by it all.}

Ah yes of course the Cherno Samba one! I forgot about that one, I might give that another read later as well lol I'm going to have to print some of these off because a few friends of mine would really enjoy them yet some of them don't have the internet! (old timers) makes me feel good saying that, I suddenly feel younger! but we're allowed to kid ourselves every now and then aren't we ;) .

Thanks for the review of the day as well, I found it on the football news views website. Have a great day mate!

{Ed001's Note - you must be the only person I know who still knows people who don't have the internet! Even my one surviving grandparent, who is in her 90s and never had time for new fangled technology (being brought up by nuns in an orphanage seems to have given her a distrust for just about everything that wasn't around in biblical times!) uses the net. I don't even want to know what she uses it for though, probably knitting patterns or something she doesn't actually need to use the net for.}

Lol mate the funny thing is, one of them actually has the internet but doesn't know how to use it (on a tablet), yet still pays for it? I think he keeps it for his grand kids go around though lol me though, I couldn't be without the internet now, It'd be like losing electricity if it went down, bugger that. Crazy how we've all become so reliant on the internet really isn't it lol.

{Ed001's Note - when I got out here and had no net initially I was utterly lost. Thankfully there are always places to go for free internet these days!}

Yeah I know what you mean, when I first moved into this house there was no internet because we had to get it changed over and it took about a fortnight, my word it was the longest fortnight of my life I think! I was ok overall because I had mobile internet but it's just not the same! I tried to tether it or whatever it's called, you know where you make your computer see your phone internet, it worked too (I was quite proud of myself when it worked ;) ), next thing I know it wasn't working and I was banned for a few hours lol typical, I had no idea it wasn't allowed!

{Ed001's Note - I didn't have a data package sorted for my phone initially either, so it was mostly just hanging round in places with free internet.}

I'd been looking forward to this one since you mentioned it was in the pipeline the other day Ed, certainly did not disappoint!
Fantastic read, and what a fascinating character. Such a shame someone so influential has almost been forgotten about entirely.
Thanks for another great article!

{Ed001's Note - thank you mate. I am amazed he has been so forgotten. He was light years ahead of his time, Keys and Gray still moan about pre-match warm ups every week now over 60 years later.}

Very interesting that Ed001 thank you.
Quite a few parallels with Shankly in some ways, some of the things he did and experienced.
As well as the legends you mentioned that he was associated with, there’s Albert Stubbins himself of course, who became a great Liverpool hero. A young John Lennon was apparently a fan, the later album cover and all that.
Mr Kay won the league though, that’s the ultimate compliment.
A Liverpool legend himself.

{Ed001's Note - I forgot to mention Stubbins in the legends list? Damn must be because there were so many quotes from him I put in. I apologise. As for Lennon, I know little about him to be honest, other than that everyone used to think me dad looked the spit of him and that me grandad did a fundraiser for the ambulance service and put the Beatles on 10th on the bill. They were supposed to do a set before the interval and a set after the interval, but they were so bad Ken Dodd told me grandad to pay them off to get rid in the interval or everyone would leave!}

10 Sep 2018 08:14:39
Is that straight up about The Beatles and Ken Dodd?

{Ed001's Note - yes mate, Doddy was there because he was my grandad's best mate and was top of the bill. It was filling in at a show for my grandad, who was double booked, that got Doddy spotted.}

16.) 10 Sep 2018
10 Sep 2018 08:22:41
Fantastic. Made my day that.
Top man.

{Ed001's Note - Doddy actually had a big part to play in the site. When I was a kid he would always, every single time I saw him, tell me that I should get into computers, that they were the future etc. It stuck with me that advice.}

What a great read about a man who is often forgotten in reds history and what a wonderful legacy he left to football with 3 great managers having experienced his modern methods to football management congrats ed01 keep up the good work.

{Ed001's Note - thanks Tc.}

Wow, it feels like I owe you for telling a story I have never heard, but that I really should have known. I wholeheartedly agree with other suggestions that the club really should acknowledge his contributions more. Sure, it's a long time ago, but that's history alright - and it is going to be harder to elevate him into Liverpool Manager 'hall of fame'.

(Now that I think of it, I've sometimes wondered why the Manager history seemed to start with Shanks, but players like Liddell and Balmer still are, for good reasons, remembered and revered - even though the number of people that actually saw them play are not increasing. )

{Ed001's Note - it is odd that we don't go further back with regards to managers. We won 5 titles before Shanks, they are mostly forgotten.}

Fantastic read as usual, elongating my early morning ritual much to the annoyance this morning of 1 particular family member who has been banging on the door furiously, and was last heard yelling, if you don’t bloody well hurry up I’m just going to go on the floor. women eh!

Kind regards

Absolutely ridiculous the improvement The Beatles made in such a short space of time! Great story Ed01 mate.
