Dear Ed001,
On the very extensive Ed's Football Legends List, I surely hope Franco Baresi is featured.

(I tried searching for a name that should be on it, but 0 results. Is it still accessible and updated here? )

Growing up with the Italian Invincibles and their fantastic defense line - what was the secret, and what would the modern day equivalent be? Not the general dominance and success, but in terms of fostering great defenders?

{Ed001's Note - he is on there don't worry. The list is on the Man City site as that is the quietest one we have.

The secret was simple, they taught defensive attributes to youngsters, rather than just technique on the ball or flicks and tricks. It is a completely different mindset required, you have to position yourself differently and most coaches and scouts do not even look for those attributes in young players any more.}

1.) 12 Jul 2018 12:24:28
Why is Mancity page the quietest ed? :) :)

2.) 12 Jul 2018 12:44:08
Ak, They're all still trying to figure out how to change their usernames from Terry26 and Drogba11, to Aguero10 and Kompany4 👀.

3.) 12 Jul 2018 12:38:36
Ed001, which one do you think is better partnership?

1) baresi n costacurta
2) baresi n maldini
3) maldini n nesta.

{Ed001's Note - oooo tough one. I can't remember seeing Maldini and Baresi together in the centre, so I will have to rule out 2 on that basis. I am going to go with 1, but there is very little in it.}

4.) 12 Jul 2018 12:54:06
Secret to italy's great defences. Good defenders.

5.) 12 Jul 2018 14:37:06
Baresi and "Billy" were really very good. Almost impassable. But I would go with Maldini and Nesta because both were better with the ball at their feet and moved forward with the ball. Both had enough technique to play DM if need be.

6.) 12 Jul 2018 14:52:23
Yeah you are right Ed. at that time maldini play as fullbacks alongside mauro tasotti in that great milan team.

{Ed001's Note - I didn't think I had seen him in the centre then, but I didn't watch every game.}

7.) 12 Jul 2018 15:42:42
Ed001, do you have any article about the great football team in the past?

1)Pep Barca
2)Dalglish Liverpool
3)Cruyff Ajax
4)Puskas Madrid
5)Early 90 Milan
6)3 title Spain team.

{Ed001's Note - yes mate there is a great teams one: Great Teams Part 1 - Lisbon Lions

I have added your choices to the list of teams to write about.}

8.) 12 Jul 2018 16:31:24
AraAy69, That AC Milan back line of Tassotti, Baresi "Billy" Costacurta and Maldini (with Philippo Galli in reserve) is stuff of legends. As for the best Italian partnership, I would pick Nesta/ Canavarro even tho, Nesta/ Maldini was more than tasty.

9.) 12 Jul 2018 16:49:11
Great then. I bet you must have a long list of thing to write Ed. excluding any Liv side, if you can pick one great team that you want to see play again, which team would you choose Ed?

{Ed001's Note - I have only seen them in videos so it would be great to have either 1970 Brazil or Cruyff's Holland team that just failed to win the trophy playing now so I could see them live.}

I seldom pay attention to media, but a short interview with Michael Owen regarding his "dream PL 5-a-side team" was too intriguing to pass. And he did not disappoint. Wow.

GK: Van Der Sar
D: Ferdinand
MF: Gerrard
MF: Scholes
ST: Rooney.

{Ed025's Note - no pace there at all...plodders FC..

1.) 05 Dec 2016 23:24:00
I feel like scholes isn't a 5 a side type player but I could be wrong.

2.) 06 Dec 2016 08:09:37
Pace in 5 aside!

3.) 06 Dec 2016 10:35:45
Owen played with Ronaldo (the brazilian) at Madrid. Why would he pick Rooney over maybe the best striker ever?

Curious on what happened with the recruit from the BR regime, Dr Steven Peters.

He was (officially) credited for doing great work with some of the more troubled-in-the-head players, and these (Suarez, Sterling, Henderson, Sturridge, Gerrard to name a few) really seemed to improve on the pitch.

Then (spring 2014 I think) he also joined the England national team. And about this time sort of faded out from Liverpool. Or was it a clear cut here?

Was he a Rodgers man, eg. building great characters, or was there more to him? What happened with his Liverpool tenure?

1.) 15 Sep 2016 15:26:39
He's a therapist. Wrote a book. "The Chimp Paradox". Interesting read, but common sense in places.

2.) 15 Sep 2016 19:06:50
You know 'The Office' episode where Brent gets a team building expert in and then sabotages it by making it all about him and how he'd do it?
That's how I imagine Rodgers and Peter's working together 😄.

3.) 16 Sep 2016 10:10:35
Actual LOL. That is brilliant. This is an image in my head that now can't be unseen. And I now know that is what happened.

I would be happy to hear your take on the Henry interview in the Telegraph. Good move? Bad move? I'm surprised by the tone I must say.

I get the whole thing, LS want out, the club wanting him out a long time ago, a large part of the fans wants him out by now. So, why this? Still looking for a higher (won't say 'realistic') bid, prefererly from outside of England. Or is even he fed up by the antics, showing him and other clubs that we actually will keep him (until January? Next season?) 'til everyone (LS party that is) involved shows an appropriate amount of respect in this matter?

Good thing to push the price up I suppose. But I still expect him to be sold to RM, with transfer request, in the region of £40M (but let's not go there, because I have no clue and it's not that relevant for me.)

{Ed002's Note - It is largely posturing and, as far as I am concerned, a little shove in the back of Suarez to force a transfer request to be submitted (which is worth £2M plus to Liverpool). Knee jerk reactions are oft regretted and quite frankly none of this should be happening in public. Mr Henry does however need to be careful about being disrespectful to other clubs, whether they in his view deserve it or not. It will eventually reflect badly on Liverpool and the good reputation has been tarnished enough by the Toxic One already.

I think we are well beyond pushing the price up or down, but the efforts continue to get other bids on the table.

The winners out of all of this are the media of course - they will, in the main, lap this up. And I don't suppose for one minute that is what the club or the owners want.}

1.) 09 Aug 2013 10:46:15
The Toxic One is a fantastic way to refer to DF.

To address 002's other point: the media have been opportunistic historically. The posturing will absolutely embellish every last word by Henry - predictable and expected.

2.) Thank you for enlightening me/us. (Too bad some people here seem reluctant to accept The Light, but generally speaking I, like others, feel this site has levelled up qualitywise since mandatory registration.)

Agree with Swish there. Considering the ruckus when Firmino switched from 11 to 9 when Salah arrived. For instance. Just sit tight and enjoy the summer.

I really don't get the 'squad improvement'. I would have suspected we do have 4th choice players for a reason (or two) ; emergency backup (short-term injuries and suspensions) and being able to rest players against 'lesser teams'. I liked Klopp being explicit about 4 CBs and having Gomez as 4th. That sounded like a man with a plan. Buying 3rd-4th choice players contradicts this imho.

{Ed002's Note - It contradicts what Klopp has said to Gomez - it seemed he lied - nothing else. It of course adds more Liverpool youngsters to the list of players who have little or no future at the club under Klopp as well.}

Ed/ Ohio,
I agree on the observations, it's there for anyone to see. However, I wonder about the wording 'terrible attitude'. For me, Balo is the schoolbook example of bad attitude. Ben seems at least somewhat interested in making it here. In Ben's case, I think it is more a case of 'bad decision making' and 'not being well-equipped in the brain department'. And historically, I would have put some blame on the coaches and scouts and everyone involved. Klopp seems more normal in that sense - realizing, It was never going to be us, Ben.

Londoner - Seems like we have more KRs here with the same opinion. Anyhoo, I don't see the opinion in the phrase "I'll drive him there myself". It is more of a statement. And, of course, a lie. (I can't see anyone here taking two days off work, and petrol prices being high etc. And then spending some good time in a car, chitchatting with an italian footballer they seem to despise. Can you?)

But, it is a rumour site. Of course people are going to lie here. And some others will express some common sense.

Dear Philistine,
Please tell me the topic of your discussion on your way down?

If you're a 'supporter', I'd suggest one of the following:
1. I doubt this is true. If so, good luck Fabio! I'm sad things didn't seem to work out here, mostly due to injuries and fickle fans abusing him for no appearant reason .
2. I doubt it is true. He has shown some promise. And I hope he's going to carry his recent form against utd u21 into the first team. YNWA!

Or whatever flows your boat. Well, except being disrespectful that is.

Growing up, I actually had little interest in football. Most of my friends supported ManU or Arsenal. But then, at about 12 (1993) I got Premier Manager 2 for my Amiga. I played Halifax Town from the Conference all the way to Premier League. And then, I got an offer from another club. You guessed it. Sheffield W. It didn’t feel right, so I restarted from my last save. I got another offer. From Liverpool. I knew nothing, but they had this fellow called McManaman, and that was the coolest name I ever heard. And some chap namned Fowler. Yeah. Never looked back.

I find it rather bizarre that ‘the usual suspects’ always get new shiny job offers, even if their résumées would perhaps indicate immediate failure.

It all seems so. shortsighted. businesslike - always This Quarter - rather than sustainably planning ahead. Which could include a bumpy road.

There should not be a shortage of candidates one would think. I do understand that the top positions are quite qualified work, and I’m not suggesting myself.

Is it a case of chicken vs egg discussion regarding experience? Nepotism and ‘making friends at high places’?

I see questionnarks, but I don’t know if there is a question here. I just don’t get it. Over and out.

{Ed001's Note - friends I think is the answer. It is about who you know and always will be.}

Perhaps people think that if the captain plays, he might gain extra fantasy points and/ or gain skill points faster.

I suppose this is more about involving SM rather than giving AB rest. Which is fine I guess. But why tell this in advance, and not when the rest of the team is announced? For example, would this information at all affect the Chelsea tactics? And if so, is that a good or a bad thing?
