Looks like a day of tough draws then, with Chelsea in the league cup. Lucky we invested in squad depth this season. I just hope Klopp doesn't rotate Goalkeepers for cups this season with this draw.

1.) 30 Aug 2018 20:44:42
Nah I think Mignolet should play. He wants to leave for regular football but if the club doesn't want to let him to do so the least we could do is let him play cup games.

2.) 30 Aug 2018 21:27:06
Sibsama Does that extend to the CL games as well 😳.

3.) 30 Aug 2018 21:38:41
Migs and Moreno played V West Brom last season, we were knocked out,
Migs had a very poor game,
I think that was his last game for Liverpool.

4.) 30 Aug 2018 22:38:21
PSG, Napoli, Red Star - tough draws!

Chelsea - tough draw!

My new girlfriend - TOUGH DRAWERS!

Eds and fellow reds, one random banter question if I may.
When I started watching Football (late 90s, early 2000s), we used to have very athletic forwards, who used to celebrate with acrobatic summersaults etc. We almost never see them anymore. What has changed? And who is your favourite goal celebrator in recent times?
I quite enjoy the creativity Firmino brings in to his celebrations.

{Ed001's Note - most managers dislike those celebrations as many players have been injured by them. I would think that is why they have gone out of fashion as they would be discouraged by academies.

As for favourite, I really do not care about celebrations.}

1.) 20 Aug 2018 06:48:55
It has to be Alan Kennedy’s after he scored against Real Madrid in the 1981 European Cup Final

It still makes me chuckle today, he didn’t know what to do with himself bless him.

2.) 20 Aug 2018 06:53:11
Alan Shearer, running with one hand in the air, simple, iconic.

3.) 20 Aug 2018 07:01:00
Ray Houghtons forward roll 😂.

4.) 20 Aug 2018 08:09:33
Fowler’s In the Derby.

Or Fowler’s against the Mancs in 00/ 01 season at home.

5.) 20 Aug 2018 08:48:36
Any celebration that doesn't see the player injured or carded is fine by me.

6.) 20 Aug 2018 09:36:34
Anyone by a Liverpool player that Mane copies.

7.) 20 Aug 2018 10:50:44
Firmino by a long way. I’m always looking forward to see what else he’s thought up. I did love Suarez’s dive though.

Worst celebration was Borini with his ‘knife in mouth’ or Ozil’s thumbsuck. what’s that all about?

8.) 20 Aug 2018 12:10:17
always enjoy a good old studge dance!

09 Aug 2018 17:18:42
Question for Ed25 if you are around.
Congratulations on all the deadline day action with 3 signings! I used to think last season that Everton had too big a squad. I understand that Besic has left, but do you now expect many outs to Europe at bargain prices or loans for the rest of the month?

{Ed025's Note - yes i do klopping, we have too many players at the moment mate so somethings got to give..

01 Aug 2018 19:43:13
Folks, I am half afraid I will get shot down for this - please go easy on me.
I honestly believe we could do a lot worse than signing Jordan Ayew as backup to Firmino (should Ings and Origi leave, and Solanke can then get a loan move to find his goalscoring boots) . I really think he is the most similar player in style to Firmino in terms of pressing the opposition and setting his team mates up. Of course not at the same level of quality as Firmino, but would be a good back up that can let the rest of the system flow through as is.
What do you all think?

{Ed002's Note - No.}

1.) 01 Aug 2018 20:12:20
Sorry mate, you and I have been watching different players with the same name, I think.

2.) 01 Aug 2018 20:13:39
I said this a while back Klopping and got shot down. I think he could be a good understudy also, but unlikely to happen.

3.) 01 Aug 2018 20:21:50
Sturridge, Salah, Mane, probably Shakiri could all play there, Brewster is a possiblity, and that's before even thinking of changing the system to suit, we have plenty options.
Ayew should not be one of them though, and there are others in world football who could do the role way better than Ayew could, unlikely we will be buying them though or any other forward in this window.

4.) 01 Aug 2018 21:09:42
It's a good point. There are similarities but there are better out there than ayew.

5.) 02 Aug 2018 02:02:37
Ayew don't know what ayew are talking about.

6.) 02 Aug 2018 03:53:36
Rather keep Origi.

7.) 02 Aug 2018 09:51:58
I would rather Solanke and Brewster get game time than blow £20 million plus on Ayew.

another good pre season run out for the lads against kids from Manchester.
Key takeaways:
1. Fantastic crowd- good to hear YNWA and Allez allez so clear from across the pond
2. Shaqiri - what a finish, and an equally good assist. Looked busy and did good things on the ball. Did not press much though - let's see if he can be coached there
3. Fabinho looked much more in control than the previous game
4. Woodburn and Chirivella again looked good
5. Camacho continues to impress. May not be a natural right back, but could be a decent attacking option from the bench
6. Sturridge again looked good and took his goal well. Clearly the 2nd best striker after Firmino in our squad - seems to be miles ahead of Solanke Origi and Ings
7. Salah and Mane looked good and the chemistry was very visible

1. Solanke once again failed to produce any chance (created or consumed) in 60 min of Football. He feels more like an advanced defensive midfielder than a goal scoring threat on many ocassions.

1.) 29 Jul 2018 00:12:13
Shaqiri and Sturridge seem to have a good connection developing. What a strike by Shaqiri!

2.) 29 Jul 2018 00:34:40
"Advanced defensive midfielder" sounds about right. I rate Solanke and want him to do well but I think he needs a loan to a lower PL or Championship side. Not going to improve significantly without regular game time.

3.) 29 Jul 2018 12:14:19
OP, you described Solanke perfectly. I have NO idea how people rate this guy over Origi. I agree that Origi is having a 'mare in the past year BUT he clearly was NOT this poor when he first arrived and showed a LOT more in his first 2 seasons (11 goals in all comps. in his first season, 22 goals in first 2 seasons, both as 3rd choice striker) than Solanke is showing now. He definitely NEEDS to do better cos for right now, I cannot see what he does.

Makes sense for Fulham. But I don't know if we will let him go. We don’t have Klavan anymore, and unless we bring someone in I don’t see us letting our fourth choice CB go.

I think Markovic realises he will never make the same kind of money in his career, and he is trying to maximise on that income while he still has it. Terrible that he decided not to move for playing time.

{Ed0333's Note - I would have done the same thing. He’s probably on more money at Liverpool a week than what he was being offered by Anderlecht, so he burns the last year of his lucrative Liverpool contract and does a Bosman next season. He’s still young for a footballer and still has time to resurrect his career although i don’t think it will be a stellar one.

I would rather he sticks around and gets a shot at the first team. Worst case, he should get a loan move to a PL club. Stoke has a very different playing style to us.

Wilson is someone I have been a fan of since he came on to the scene at 16.
However, I have seen him get very few Liverpool outings compared to others such as Ejaria, Woodburn, even Kent. I believe the same is true even for pre season games. I know a part of it could be because he is out on loan often, but I fear that Klopp doesn’t like him as much as we spectators do. Not sure if that has to do with attitude, work rate or skill.
That said, I really do hope that he will shine, and hopefully that is for us. He is a similar story as Suso imho, and I would hate for another one to slip away. Fully agree with other posters that he could easily replace Lallana (my Grandmother could too, to be fair)

{Ed002's Note - Wilson is on loan at Derby - hence he is not playing for Liverpool. Options for the younger players will be even more limited now the club is looking to buy the league.}

Trent is a good shout but I would put my money on young Joe Gomez. Seems to have a sound head on strong shoulders.

I agree that it will take a lot of time for Lallana to get ip to speed given a Long time out on the sidelines. However, I am not sure if Shaqiri is ready to play in a pressing midfield 3. It will take him time to get used to our style, and with the press you need all 10 outfielders contributing as one unit. Not saying he won’t get there, but it will take time (like it did with the Ox) . I think Keita will come in in midfield and try to play the more attacking / Creative role and Shaq will continue to cover for the front 3 along with Sturridge.

I hear you, SG Red. But I wouldn't start Shaqiri in midfield. He is a great creative player, but is nowhere close to our other midfielders in defensive / press qualities. He will get there, and is still learning the ropes of our pressing style, but I believe it will take time.
I would start with the same starting lineup as yesterday (potentially change Keita for Hendo if he is injured), and have Shaqiri and Sturridge as planned 60th min subs if we need to up the ante on goal scoring.
Being in front of our home support at Anfield will fire the team on. I think we need to improve the number of bodies in the box when we attack. Firmino and Mane are playing pretty deep, and the midfielders hardly ever make a run into the box these days. If we can mix things up with runs from midfield, it will free up our forwards to do what they do best.

Thanks Carra. Appreciated as always! Hope Woodburn turns it around, I have really high hopes for the lad.
