Eds, sorry if this is a random name plucked out of the blue. I remember Liverpool reported to be interested in Hysaj, the Napoli full back over the last two seasons. It appears that Ancelotti doesn't rate him highly, and Chelsea might be looking to swoop in for him. Any chance of Liverpool retaining an interest, for him to come in to help Trent at RB. He can play on both flanks so could cover for Clyne on the right and Moreno on the left as well.

Klopping

{Ed002's Note - No. Unless Liverpool were to sell TAA.}

1.) 10 Jan 2019 10:44:39
Thanks Ed002! Then we are not going to buy any first choice right back.

{Ed002's Note - Not unless TAA leaves - or drops down to being second pick.}

2.) 10 Jan 2019 12:26:26
Do you think we will ultimately move trent into midfield in the long run?

{Ed002's Note - There has been no indication that there is any intention to do so.}

3.) 10 Jan 2019 13:52:56
We should get Azpilicueta in if Chelsea buy Hysaj, surely they couldn't keep both players in their squad.

4.) 10 Jan 2019 14:04:49
Thanks Ed.

Just caught the Ajax - Madrid game and again felt that VAR takes things out of context making decisions which are too arbitrary on technical grounds. Didn't think there was enough in it to overturn the decision of the first goal. Also thought Ajax had an argument for a foul in the build up to Madrid's 2nd goal.

Why can't they just do it like Cricket? Teams can ask for VAR for goal related situations (up to 2 wrong attempts a game then you can't anymore) . VAR can overrule the ref only if ref is significantly wrong.

The current rules just allow for lazy refereeing. I am confident that in a season or two we will no longer be seeing any offside flags as linesmen would rather play it safe and wait for VAR to rule it out. Same with penalties.

Rant over

I didn’t watch that game but I’ve got to say whenever I’ve watched a game with VAR in it kind of sucks all the fun out of it, especially when you get a notification that VAR is being looked at behind the scenes, means you can’t concentrate on the game because you know it’s about to be stopped.
I had mixed feelings before it came in but for me I don’t like it, would rather we just had competent referees.

2.) 14 Feb 2019 00:03:29
I agree with both of you. I can’t stand it, it just ruins the game. We’ll be in a position where players and fans won’t celebrate until the goal is reviewed by VAR and the ref points to the centre circle.
I don’t know about you but I want to jump and scream as the ball hits the net not on the blow of a whistle or the point of an arm.

Then there’s those decisions that people just disagree on. Take Mane last season (I think it was against Stoke) when he was clearly kicked in the ankle in the box. He’s not immediately gone down so got booked for diving and some said it was a dive and others said there was contact so it’s a pen. How will VAR help there?

If you’re going to use it then it has to be for offside decisions (if they look at it in line with the last defender we should get it 100% right) and ball out of play type decisions only. Black and white decisions. Otherwise it will cause more problems for the game than it solves.

3.) 14 Feb 2019 00:52:51
If you have to have it, then use it properly. There was a flag raised for offside early in a counter attack. The Ajax player was actually in his own half when the ball was played. Isn't VAr there so that play continues, if he scores, then review the offside?

On a second note, I though Ajax were outstanding in the first half. Their pressing and intensity was brilliant. They created so many good attacks, just didn't have that striker to finish things. Madrid were totally outplayed in that half.

4.) 14 Feb 2019 05:20:22
to the original post the way it is used in cricket will just make football unbearable. teams will just gather around captain and ask him to call for VAR and in football most of the decisions are fifty-fifty so VAR can hardly judge a tackle.
VAR should be strictly restricted to offside and goal line tech. whenever a goal is scored just check for offside and whether the ball crossed the line, everything else should be human and as it used to be.

5.) 14 Feb 2019 11:19:03
Tough one this as I like the human element when it comes to decision making. VAR seems to slow the game down and it becomes almost robotic.

I do feel however that, the quality of the refereeing needs to be addressed especially in England.

I'd love to hear Ed02's take on it if you have the time?

{Ed002's Note - Largely if it could be left at it is with the referee making the decision then that would be best. Perhaps use VAR for critical goal or no goal decisions but it has to be quick. I agree the refereeing has gone downhill - and this seems to be more of an issue in England than elsewhere. That needs to be addressed regardless.}

6.) 14 Feb 2019 14:04:57
Ak, but var is there to eradicate human error. For me it needs to review everything or nothing, I know they can’t review every decision as the game would become slow, boring and just unbearable. But why have it if a human error can then lead to a completely fair goal. One instance that comes to mind, Chelsea vs Derby (I believe) in the cup, derby should of had a free kick in the corner but instead Chelsea got a throwing (which actually came of a Chelsea man) straight from the throw the balls whipped in and they score. Nothing wrong with the goal except to two wrong decisions leading up to it. Var gives the goal because they can’t review the previous errors.

7.) 14 Feb 2019 18:28:40
Completely agree Ed. Maybe if they put the money from VAR into better training the referee's we wouldn't be having this conversation?

I'm sure Benny Baller has some good insight on this debate if he's about.

15 Jan 2019 02:54:24
Been reading on about the Red Bull Salzburg striker who wants to come to Liverpool. He has a good record this season, but never heard of him before or seen him play.
Ed's and fellow reds, any interest in him from our powers that be? Also anybody seen him play and can share what kind of a player he is and whether he will fit in?

Klopping

{Ed001's Note - it would help if you gave us a name.}

1.) 15 Jan 2019 04:54:57
His name is Munas Dabbur from Israel 🇮🇱.

{Ed001's Note - sorry I know nothing about him.}

2.) 15 Jan 2019 06:48:00
No Israeli is coming to Liverpool as long as Salah is here.

If we buy Munas, that means that Salah is on his way out to Real or so.

{Ed025's Note - you are guessing there mate..

3.) 15 Jan 2019 07:32:22
Yossi Benayoun was on Chelsea's books (though out on loan), when Salah joined Chelsea in 2014.

4.) 15 Jan 2019 07:46:52
JJLT, what is your basis for making that statement please? A tabloid rag? A social media ‘source’?

{Ed001's Note - it is nonsense, the guy clearly knows nothing about Salah and is making an ill-educated guess based on Salah once refusing to shake hands with an Israeli team.}

5.) 15 Jan 2019 08:01:29
A certain Mr Brewster won't be too happy if we are signing more squad players for the forward positions.

6.) 15 Jan 2019 08:44:56
He has scored 20 goals plus 6 assists in 30 games in all competitions this season, seems a talented player.

7.) 15 Jan 2019 08:54:41
Sorry Ed wasn’t sure on the name there. It is indeed Dabbur who has seemingly announced to Salzburg that he is leaving in the next few days.

{Ed001's Note - a hundred players a week talk about how they want to play for Liverpool mate, pointless even starting to discuss things like that or it will never end. I mean Akinfenwa talks about it on a daily basis but it will never happen.}

8.) 15 Jan 2019 08:55:21
JLT - ED2 already discounted that as a "thing". Salah might leave but this will not be a reason for it.
As an Israeli myself, can safely say that a likelier reason might be that the vast majority of Israeli footballers are just lazy and no good at football. .

9.) 15 Jan 2019 12:42:49
Yeah, all this religious BS has no place in football. 50 years ago a liverpool player would not go on to manage the gers.

10.) 15 Jan 2019 19:45:02
Salah is leaving regardless, but I think the poster who implied he'd leave because of signing an Israeli player is correct in principle because the extremely strained relations between Israel and the Muslim world is there for all to see, its not a dislike its a genuine hatred based on facts that are not to be discussed on here. But either way that scenario will not present itself because we are not signing the player anyway and Salah won't be here next season.

11.) 15 Jan 2019 21:11:09
Waro, there are a number of contentious assertions in your post but I will leave the political one aside and concentrate on the footballing assertions: ‘Salah is leaving regardless. ’ and ‘Salah won’t be here next season’. They are big statements to make and I am intrigued to hear what evidence or information you have for making them. And one in five who live in Israel are Muslims and some have even represented the National side.}

{Ed002's Note - For the third time I will re-iterate that when Salah joined Chelsea, a Jewish owned club - he gave a assurance that he was over the previous issue and there has been nothing since to say it is still an issue.

Ed's, fellow reds

Saw a press article today about Sunderland cancelling Jerome Sinclair's loan. I remember he had left Liverpool to play first team Football - and was wondering how he has been doing?

Sinclair, Nemeth, Morgan, Mellor - just makes one wonder how hard it is to Guess how a career is going to pan out. Hopefully Brewster comes on strong - the lad seems to have good spirit.

Klopping

1.) 10 Jan 2019 19:39:40
I can't say that I watch the youth teams at all but as I recall I don't think any of the 4 names you mentioned were ever really expected to break into the first team and play regularly.

2.) 10 Jan 2019 20:22:29
Sinclair definitely was.

3.) 10 Jan 2019 20:51:17
And Mellor was breaking Gods scoring records in the ressies.

4.) 10 Jan 2019 21:41:44
So was Adam Morgan and has ended up at Hemel Hempstead.

5.) 11 Jan 2019 00:47:59
Suso, L. Alberto, P. Gulacsi, C. Coady are doing very well.

6.) 11 Jan 2019 05:21:53
VakPa, true that about players like Suso, Coady and Gulacsi. I wouldn't include Alberto as we signed him close to being a senior player (similar to Le Tallec and Sinama Pongolle) . My post is focused more on strikers - we haven't really seen a striker come up from the academy since Michael Owen, unless you categorize Sterling as a striker. We hear similar good things about Bobby Duncan these days. Hopefully he can kick on and break the jinx for us!

7.) 11 Jan 2019 06:31:19
Christian Nemeth, I remember we had big hopes for him. Its a shame it didn't work out for the lad.

8.) 11 Jan 2019 22:32:01
Bobby Duncan will be the next fowler, Owen type stdjker to break through. That kid has built in sat nav, he knows where the goal is for sure. Trust, the lads a goal machine.

9.) 11 Jan 2019 22:32:24
And he is gerrard's cousin.

02 Jan 2019 08:32:19
Gotta love the latest Fekir rumors, with a fan reportedly seeing a Mercedes drive into Melwood at 7pm last night. Let the twitter madness begin!
Pretty sure we will not sign him unless one of our prodigious three leave.
Next incomings to Liverpool will hopefully be cover for full back and a centre forward (to replace the impending departure of studge and Origi), not sure if it happens in Jan or in the summer.

Klopping

1.) 02 Jan 2019 08:41:15
I heard he was a done deal ages ago mate, you heard it here first! Eds, do you think we'll sign Fekir? ;) .

On a serious note, I really don't see us signing anybody this month.

2.) 02 Jan 2019 09:30:39
Chelsea signed pulisic, they got a gd player there.

3.) 02 Jan 2019 09:35:14
I’d be happy with what we have but just have a feeling someone will sign.

26 Dec 2018 19:12:31
Great win today. Looked absolutely comfortable. Also delighted that Salah is getting back in form, even if Firmino seems to be missing some of his sharpness with passes.
I still don't want to count my chickens yet. Will wait till the city game before deciding if I am ecstatic or nervous. Spurs also clicking into form but I am less worried about them as they will have a dip in form too.

In other news, did you all check the Harry Wilson screamer this week? Kid's special. I hope we can keep him and make a player out of him!

Klopping

1.) 27 Dec 2018 00:02:16
Gonna check out Wilson's goal, OP. Thanks.

Guys the OP is just passing on what he’s been told, there’s no need to get so aggressive. If the player sales includes Ingsy and Solanke, plus whatever we get from other player sales such as Kent Migs etc. its not so bad. I don’t think there will be any 50M+ signings this summer, and with Ox coming back, we just need three squad additions - GK, full back cover, and maybe a right footed attacking player. £60-80M May be sufficient.

I think we are reading too much into it. There was a free space in the squad after the likes of Clyne and Dom left. We had no other new players to be registered for the squad. Even if we didn’t know if Ox will play a part for the rest of the season, it is common sense to bring him into the squad. Doesn’t mean he is recovered, doesn’t mean he is play. Does mean it is at least possible he will play - so I Guess it is good news, but not amazing news or something.

Agree with the need to get a right footed left inside forward in the summer (could well be a player who is flexible across this role and CF), but don’t know if Jadon is a prudent purchase given his likely price after Dortmund sold pulisic.

I think we are anyway short off alternatives to Mane on the left inside-forward role, which is where Woodburn plays from. I am hoping to see him get some minutes off the bench over the rest of the season. Fingers crossed for the lad - if even one of him and Brewster come good over the next 12 months or so, it will be a big win for us as a club.

A lot of us on here keep getting confused between “the better player”, vs “the better player given the price”. Yes, Shaqiri is the better player given the price, but I find it astonishing that people on here are saying he is a better player overall than Coutinho!
I would take him in a heartbeat on a 6month loan to cover for Mane / Shaq / Keita. Could help him come back into form and confidence for Barca, and could help us win the league.

Klopping

{Ed001's Note - but the problem is with what you say is that you are also forgetting which is "the better player given their current form". Coutinho has not played well since he threw his toys out of the pram with us, so I find it astonishing anyone would want to take him back. We have looked so much better without him that it would be idiotic to backslide by taking a player that clearly held us back while with us and acted the childish way he did.}

It was a good run out for the lads. Of course just a pre season friendly (and the first pre season friendly) so we shouldn’t really rate performances: but I’ll do it anyway since we are so short of any match or transfer action :)
1. Good run out for Rhian, can only do his confidence a world of good after the injury
2. Larouci looked like a new Moreno - very good and comfortable going forward, suspect at the back
3. Curtis Jones and Woodburn showing good vision, need to wait and see if either of them can step on. Really hope Woodburn can recover from last season - he kept trying the same ball again and again today
4. Pity about Glatzels injury. Thought he was much more influential than Bobby Duncan while he was on
5. Wilson’s quality of passing was apparent but Ryan Kent showed why he had such a good season in Scotland with a great work rate
6. The other centre half for 2nd half (not Matip) looked well out of his depth
7. Good to see Origi, Lallana and Ox all getting minutes early in pre season. Will help us with options as the season kicks on
8. Hoever was an absolute beast. People are talking about Rhian beefing up but I felt Howver looked much bigger, faster and efficient than what I remembered of him from last season. Didn’t see him cross much but the rest of his game play from right back was inspiring.

Most businesses look to hedge against rate fluctuations rather than speculate based on expected changes. The only exceptions would be banks that do this as a living.

RIWW, agree with your post for the most part. For rotation options for front 3, I am not sure if we can/ should get much better options than Shaqiri, Origi, Ox, Lallana and Brewster. Of course I would be excited about a new player coming in, but not sure if we really need one.

Thanks for the review Ed, great read as always. One specific moment I keep looking back to was around minutes 10-11 when the ball went back to Allisson, and he took all the time in the world on the ball before picking it up when pursued by spurs forwards. It felt like a very clear plan from very early on, that the moment we take the lead we sit back and frustrate spurs, keep our shape (with full backs staying put) and just look to counter with Salah and Mane. I was not feeling confident about the plan then but am so happy now!

{Ed001's Note - thank you to everyone for reading the match reviews and here's to next season's being full of lots of 10s *fingers crossed*}

I would love to see Wilson given a shot at pre season before Klopp takes a call to be honest. But I Guess it will have to be one of Wilson and Camacho who remain with the squad next season, with the other one moving on.
