Van dijk banned for a further game and fined 100k. For what it’s worth I don’t mind that he’s been punished but I think the FA have shot themselves in the foot a bit. There is countless times per season when the players swear and shout at the ref so now they have got to be consistent with the punishment and there’s going to be a lot of suspensions this season if that is the case.

The refs are clowns and getting worse year after year, it’s little wonder they get zero respect.

If they’re consistent then Bruno Fernandes will only play 1 more game this season.

Ron, consistency? Surely you jest. We saw how the ref swallowed his whistle when Al Hilal-castle were getting away with the same things the ref had no issues “applying the letter of the law” to when we did them so we will see what happens when other players do what VVD did.

To be fair, other sports don't tolerate foul and inappropriate language with the refs/ umpires so I am all for introducing discipline, however as has been pointed out by OP, it will not be universally applied and I suspect VVD's case will be a one off punishment.

They should be consistent and there should be no excuses, especially if all ref's remain with a mic for Mic'd Up which they're doing on Sky Sports.

Absolutely no reason they can't review what's said and by who and take action, but naturally they won't.

I don't really care what other teams do. Van Dijk should have walked but he was embarrassing. I've no major complaints about the red card and he was caught the wrong side of the player. I can understand his frustration but there was no need for his language and reluctance to leave the field.

The fa could do with the money. Expect lots of fines this year. They've set the bar with Virgil and rightly so.

It’s right that Van Dijk has been reprimanded fir his behavior, but the expectation is the same sort of sanctions won’t be doled out equally to other guilty parties. I hope I’m proven wrong, but I’ve very little faith in the officials or their governing bodies.

I’d like to know what’s going to happen with the 100k fine. Given to charity or help homeless?

The ref got VVDs decision right in my opinion and still got zero respect. He should have walked instead of mouthing off, costing the club one more game without him and £100k lighter in his pocket.

Appropriate ban for VVD.

A general observation of the interaction between ref and VVD - it was a very confrontational and dismissive conversation led by the referee.

I fully support VVD’s punishment, but yes as above it hd to be consistent. The game could use a little respect for the officials, even if they are of a crap standard right now.

I believe the fines go to grass root football. If that's actually correct then I say fine them more often.
If it goes fully to charity even better.

{Ed002's Note - No they don’t. The go in to the overall coffers for distribution at all levels of the game.}

Anyone know the actual rule of foul and abusive language towards a an official?

Will the fine always be the same or is it proportional to the players salary? Some pool Luton player could do similar and loose how many weeks wages as a result?

I don’t think it was a red card. The ref couldn’t wait to send him off after he’d had a go at him after cocking up the Trent debacle.

As long as refs keep showing a total lack of understanding of the game they will always get shouted and sworn at by players. It’s hard not to treat someone with contempt when their actions are contemptible.

VVD called him a joke. He was absolutely right.

@Gazza, it will be in the rule book, mate.
