I mentioned the genius of Jimmy Greaves on a post earlier. I think it’s a disgrace the way players of the non-premier league era are ignored when it comes to achievements and ‘Best of. ” lists. You see it constantly on Sky and MOTD. Alan Shearer top of the list with 260 premier league goals. Jimmy Greaves scored 413 in 588 appearances in the old Division 1 and yet it’s as if he never existed at all.

Because to Skynet, football started in 1992. Back then we thought we stopped football being destroyed by keeping the Premier League a part of the football Pyramid. Breakaway day cannot be stopped though. It can only be postponed.

You do realise that Sky invented football?
Jimmy Greaves? First goal ever scored in England was Teddy Sheringham against Liverpool. Thought everyone knew that!

OP, haven't you heard? Football started being a thing in England in 1992 when Sky invented it. Even worse for certain clubs cos many of their fans believe football started for their club in 2003 and 2008. I just for the life of me, cannot remember the names of these "clubs" in question. Can someone help me, pls?

KloppBoom - I agree that there is a tendency for some people to talk only about the Premier League history and that this is a bit annoying, but I think people who know football and have any real interest in it, do know all about the great teams and players and the records from previous eras.

I do think the media and the broadcasters are a little bit guilty of talking about "the best X in Premier League history" or referring to stats only from the Premier League era, but on the other hand you hear people moaning about Souness talking about how it was back in his day. Lineker on BT and BBC also pre-dates the Premier League of course.

I completely agree on your point about Greaves. I don't think it's down to a bias towards the Premier League because people talk about other prolific strikers and brilliant players from the 80s, 70s and 60s. Greaves just doesn't seem to get the same coverage but real football people know.

In addition to the amazing stats that you shared, Greaves is England's fourth highest scorer of all time but what is most remarkable is that his 44 goals for England came in just 57 matches. Rooney played over twice as many times for England and scored just 9 goals more. Charlton played 49 times more for England than Greaves and scored only 5 more goals. Lineker 23 more appearances but only 4 more goals.

Thats gas Barry! I remember we had it as well (it must have been cheap to get the channels in Ireland at the time! ) .

I was raging we didn't win! Didn't know who Sheringham was but never liked him from that day on!

Not to rubbish stir but I actually feel that not mixing PL and pre-PL is legitimate. No doubt sky do it for their own gain but so much changed in football leading up to and around that time including different European competitions, different number of league games, number and type of substitutes etc that the sport really did undergo a material change that would give advantages and disadvantages depending on the category to the older players. When making direct comparisons a clean break does probably make sense for a level playing field.
