Ed2 what's the latest regarding Per Schurrs?

{Ed002's Note - Perr Schuurs (CB) Only signed from Ajax last summer and an enquiry from Spurs was met with a not for sale - but a €40m plus offer would make them listen - a subsequent Spurs offer was well short of that. I doubt any club would value him at half that but Manchester United, and ten Hag knows him well, and Liverpool have sent scouts on a number of occasions. Napoli offer an option as they have him on their lengthy Kim replacement list. Informal offers from Napoli and Liverpool have been turned away and they have been told the asking price, but may well return with better offers. West Ham are keen but want to include a player to reduce the costs. Crystal Palace are concerned that they will lose Marc Guehi and have asked for talks with the club - but the price is seen as high. West Ham offer an unlikely solution.}

I can see a alvarez type from ajax someone a little more experienced who can play left cb.

Might not be him but that type as apposed to a centreback unless colwill becomes available.

Guessing off course.

Ed, it seems that sellers are becoming much more savvy at generating value from a sale than buyers are at finding value on a purchase. Case in point, Per Schurrs. Why are these clubs circling on Schurrs, and offering lowball prices when Torino has communicated what it would take to move a seller that they have no pressure to sell? Do they believe that Torino needs the cash and won't resist a lower offer? I'm not sure what that would be based on. From my perspective, this just seems like a waste of time and a very sloppy approach on the buyers' part.

{Ed002's Note - They are not offering low-ball prices as such. However, they want the best deal they can get.}

Thanks, Ed. That's an interesting note. I'm always curious to see the veil lifted a bit on what those in football believe the player to be worth. I tend to be more comfortable with seeing my club pay a premium to get a player they believe fits well into their group, especially one that's got their youth still and will likely hold value that can be resold down the road as market prices inevitably grow. 30-40M EUR for Schurrs, who seems like he could start next to Virgil, seems a bargain. And if he does start in England, he almost immediately becomes more valuable than that, but mostly in a market that is limited to English clubs. So if Liverpool really like Schurrs, then I'm pretty comfortable with seeing them engage Torino to see what can be done. If he's just someone that is out there, then I'm unsure why they wouldn't put more focus on players who are "more available" than Schurrs is, if that makes sense.

At this point, I think I have misinterpreted how much Liverpool believe they need to add a centerback.

Saints want 50m for Lavia, i think we should just offer 55m so we can all be good friends.

Is this the second time this week that the discussion has turned to negotiating suddenly becoming a dirty word? It's not, it happens in all parts of society where large sums of money are concerned. If a club thinks it can save, say, £5m on a player by negotiating then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I'm not sure how this is being interpreted as being cynical towards negotiating or against negotiating at all for a player. I'm just saying that when a club states a price on a player, and then holds firm, it seems like a waste of time to keep sending offers well below that price, especially when there are so many other players (people you've spent maybe a year or two studying/ scouting) out there. I get when you're close there's a process, but this doesn't seem to be going anywhere at the moment. Who knows how Liverpool actually feel about Schurrs though and if this is still an active pursuit.

I can’t believe all this nonsense on here. Does anyone know what negotiating is? My profession I negotiate deals for multi million pound orders on a daily basis in the oil. In the last 15 years I’ve spent well in excess of £300 million quid and have a savings record of eight percent against total spend. My companies target is 3% as they see getting 3% off any deal is a success.

If Southampton want £50 mill and have named their price the buyer will always try and negotiate a better deal. Why would you pay the first price quoted that’s just bad business. The buyer may in the end fold but the buyer should always do the best for the company it represents, treat the money as if it’s their own and every penny is a prisoner.

If the defender is seen at being valued at 20 million but the selling club wants 40 million then it’s clear they are not willing to sell unless someone desperate needs him. You should never be in a position that you’re desperate. If he is not valued at 40 million in the eyes of the buyer and they bid what they think he’s worth it’s all part of seeing how serious the clubs are at selling. If they’re not move on. It’s the same in my profession if we get one tender that’s 10x the cost of two other tenders we don’t bother trying to negotiate the tender down as its clear they don’t want or need the business the same as a football club refuse to sell as they don’t need the sale.

No one was criticizing the way LFC have handled their pursuit of Romeo Lavia. The guys that chimed in above on Lavia came out of the woodwork and I believe misunderstood the discussion, started arguing with the straw man. Personally, I think the offers LFC have made on Lavia have made sense and I'm surprised that Southampton are holding firm, but it also makes sense. They don't need to sell.

To clarify, I initially asked what was going with Schurrs specifically because I am scratching my head on how Spurs (Not LFC) have pursued both him and van de Ven too. Flirting with the sellers, and making low offers. Ed implied that the offers on Schurrs weren't that bad and the price is likely too high.

I once successfully negotiated $1 off a $5 T-shirt in Bali.
Do I feel great about asking a 9 year old for money off …. No no I don’t
Anyway turns out the T-shirt was 2 sizes too small so I lost $4
Negotiations need time that would be my advice.

You're going back on your own opinion now @mftonjes, you started off clearly saying you think clubs should just pay the price quoted if they want the player and you're backtracking since.

You're allowed your opinion. If you think they should just pay whatever is asked then that's fine, that's your opinion. Most people would disagree with that transfer tactic, myself included, but you're still welcome to have your own opinion.

@kloppthekop that don't impress me much. If you was hitting 10% I think I'd be more confident in your working skills.
I of course am doing rather better than you at 14.7% ?
None the less you're correct about the negotiations skills needed to be successful.

@Mftonjes, how is offering the price they asked to a seller, as a starting point, good business practice?

@Jude they ask for £50m and we offer £55m - got me thinking.

You know these days clubs generally offer a bit less than the asking price but make it up with add-ons?

Maybe we pay more than the asking price but include pay-backs. So if Lavia doesn’t play 50 games for us they pay £3§m back and so.

We’d certainly have got our money back for Naby.

Negotiation sucks bad and favors sociopaths who take advantage of normal people's natural bend toward social agreeability.

This really is turning sideways. I wasn't making a point at all about just paying asking price for any player out there. That's insanity. What's even more insane is somehow some of you read my posts and thought that was the point I was making. I was making points about the best use of time and resources in pursuing a player that the selling club is holding firm on, in this case Schurrs, and this thread got a mind of its own.

With that said, there are advantages within the market of paying a premium on a player that you feel strongly about, if you believe your intel on that player gives you an edge over your competition. It's especially true if you are a club with the profile of Liverpool.
