I always found it strange that everyone assumes Salah is drawn to Saudi Arabia. Tons of people get rich and leave Saudi Arabia for the UK and elsewhere. I have no idea what Salah thinks about Saudi Arabia or how much he enjoys living in Liverpool or anywhere else. It's strange as people have different things that push their buttons. Shouldn't Jordan Henderson be drawn toward not going to SA according to the "Muslim/ Not Muslim" formula? And yet, Salah remains and Henderson does not.

Everybody ranks the variables differently. For all we know Mo Salah really does not want to play in SA. There's every possibility that's true.

If teams stop including release clauses in player contracts, we will never sign a first-team level player again.

Whether he plays in the Europa League this year has no impact on the likelihood of him playing for Madrid.

Also, in general I think way too much is made of his comments on wanting to go to Madrid. Everybody has a dream, he just voiced his, and it's a normal and understandable dream. So what? Do you think he's going to pull up lame playing for Liverpool so that he never gets his dream move? If he pushes for a move in the future, I don't understand why this is a big deal. I don't need players to profess their eternal love for Anfield, just play well while here, and he will.

Negotiation sucks bad and favors sociopaths who take advantage of normal people's natural bend toward social agreeability.

Hoo boy, a lot going on here. But:

Q
1) I would have loved to see players boycott the World Cup, but playing in the ultimate sporting event that was placed in Qatar outside of your control is far different than signing for a Saudi club.

2) LOL at the guy who dropped a defense of the Saudi royal family. My dude, if you wanted to offer a defense you might point out that bonesawing someone in an embassy is far more honest than the way a whole lot of countries behave. It's awful, sure, but so we are. But that's not the defense you offered-- instead you trashed the dudes family and then told others to leave politics out of it. Whatever Khasoggi's family was up to, there is no defense for murdering someone, let alone an actual journalist. Maybe you know about the actors involved, but I would say that if others should hold their tongue out of ignorance of politics, you should hold yours from lack of morality and perspective.

Salah likely better value for money but yes, Robertson has been incredible.

The VAR team should just be instructed to make the right call, regardless of ref's decision.

I don't actually think it's corrupt. But unconscious bias is strong-- there have been numerous studies about race and refereeing, for example, and people tend to very slightly favor members of their own race. They are probably not doing this on purpose.

Furthermore, there's another human bias where not doing something is safer than doing something. In The Trolley problem, for example, people are generally ok if the trolley runs over one person instead of a bunch, but ask them to shove another person so that person dies, saving ten, and they won't do it. This is, I think, applicable to referees making penalty decisions late in games. The notion that they "shouldn't decide a game" punishes them for blowing a whistle but imagines that they aren't deciding the game when they don't make the call.

Referees should for sure be trained in this stuff and instructed to try and overcome it.

Thanks for the response.

A player who receives a pass is penalized for offside even though they have committed no other infraction because they are involved in the play.

A player who shields a keeper is penalized if they are offside even though no other infraction is committed.

Endo was penalized for offside as he was involved in the play by setting a pick. When he set the pick he was offside. The setting of the pick can be deemed completely legal and he is still penalized for offside as he is involved in the play. It doesn't matter whether it is an obstruction infraction or not. His involvement is because he picked another player while in an offside position; whether or not the pick itself is deemed legal is irrelevant to the offside offense.

Endo was not penalized for obstruction. There was no issue with him blocking off a player, this isn't something that is called, ever. It actually is an infraction to block off a player if you're not in playing distance of the ball when the ball is in play, but it's never, ever called such that it's essentially not a real rule. And that also doesn't apply to the moments before a free kick is taken. And it was not the issue in Endo's case. The issue for Endo was merely that by blocking someone off he was involved in the play.

Ake is not penalized because the blocking off a player is not what was penalized for Endo. Other people are not missing the issue here.

It's not true that a ball has to be played forward for an offside offense. The theoretical reason there is no offside on a corner kick is because nobody can be closer to the goalline than the ball, so nobody is an offside position.

Since this isn't actually true-- a corner kick doesn't have to be taken from the goalline proper, and a player could in fact be positioned on the line-- the actual reason there is no offside on a corner kick is that it is part of a group of restarts for balls out of play including throw-ins and goal kicks for which offside does not apply.
