Ed1 - Salah penalty stone cold penalty or is it just me? Not sure what was Neville's issue with it?

{Ed001's Note - looked clearcut to me.}

I think it's one of them that is a definite foul but, unless he goes to the floor, it isn't given.

Thought that too, looked an absolute stonewall.

If the foul occurred anywhere else on the pitch it would have been a free kick, so it was a clear penalty. The defender wrapped his arms around Salah for several seconds, he forced the ref into the decision.

Salah had nowhere to go but to the floor. IMO the ref would have given it if Salah went over or not, he was just waiting for any advantage that played out.

It was wwf.

Colin will use it as his press conference rant.
100% guaranteed.

Stonewall, the real issue is that if the player doesn’t go down it doesn’t get given. I’ve said it a hundred times, refs need to give fouls without the need for players to hit the deck. If Salah hadn’t, and that’s what Neville was moaning about- the way he went down, it never would have been given. The defender had both arms round him for a good 5 seconds.

Spot on Ron! At least he’s predictable with his moaning. If you start cuddling forwards as a defender you are going to give away pens. And as for sly shirt pulls, how many of those have we not been given, this or any season? A very good result today win by a team sticking with it and doing their jobs. Hope Fabs is ok for the last few games.

Maybe they can ask Warnock (not arsed about his Colin anagram) how many times and for how long a defender can grab and man-handle a striker in the box before the ref should give a penalty. If that is not a penalty then we should all pack up and go home.

From the first view from the back I would say no but when you see it from the front it’s 100% a pen. And the ref had a brilliant view and gave it straight away.

Longthing76, spot on. The ref had the best view of it cos like you say, he saw the incident from the front AND from the side. As for Warnock saying Salah dived, the adage that says, "It is better to be silent and be thought of as a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt" royally applies here.

For me 100% stone wall penalty as pointed out anywhere else on the pitch and it’s given as a free kick without hesitation. Cardiff had plenty of opportunity to take his hands off him and didn’t. Maybe Salah makes the most of it but good on him if he’s going to be constantly fouled like that.
Also if it had been a corner and a defender had his arms like that on a player when the ball is coming in the red would blow for a penalty as well. And we’ve seen plenty of those given. As for Neville how many times have we heard him say “he’s made the ref ask the question with that tackle” he said it enough times against us. He’s just rubbishting it as he sees us so close to that title and United are a million miles away.

It comes back to the age-old debate: if you have the ball in the box and you are obviously fouled, should you go to the floor?
Salah was continually fouled for about 5 seconds and the ref wasnt blowing, so he dropped and, voila, its a penalty. He could have possibly stayed on his feet but why would you when the ref isn't penalising an obvious offence?
If the ref isn't going to punish a foul unless you are lying on the grass, i have no problem whatsoever with players taking the horizontal option. At least Salah tried to fend the defender off before realising he was left without much option.

Like a Virgil, spot on. Maybe these so called "experts" should tell us for how long a player has to stay on his feet after being man-handled by an opposing defender before the ref should award a free/ spot kick. Why? Cos their analysis seem to change depending on who the player is or the club he plays for.
