All this negativity is embarrassing. Selling your best player is only a disaster if you have owners who won't reinvest or Muppets in control of transfers. With Klopp here, I'd like to think we can have some faith.

Man United sold Ronaldo and went on to win multiple league titles and cups in the next 5 years.

Chelasea sold Mata and went on to win European and domestic titles.

Arsenal sold Van Persie and broke a 10 year trophy drought.

Southampton sold Lallana and used the cash injection to jump over the silly sausages who paid £30m for him.

Spurs sold Bale and built a team instead of relying on one individual, then nearly won the league.

Atletico Madrid have sold their best player more times than I can remember but the best example would be selling Falcao and then winning the League and going to the CL final twice in quick succession.

Dortmund sold Gotze and Lewandowski, then won multiple domestic honours.

Sevilla sold Bacca and won the Europa league in both the following seasons.

Liverpool sold Ian Rush all those years ago and then put together the best front 3 in history with Barnes, Aldo and Beardo.

Liverpool sold Keegan and got Dalglish who went on to be the best player in the clubs illustrious history.

Fact is, unless you are Bayern, Barcelona or Real Madrid you are always going to lose your best players at some point. Even Juventus being the biggest team in Italy cannot resist them. If Pogba wants to go when the giants come calling, he will go. Just like Zidane did.

So stop acting like we are the only team in world football who sell our best players. It happens. When they want out, you take the money and reinvest it into a quality player who wants to wear the shirt. So I don't want to read rubbish like "Liverpool is a dying club" anymore please. Grow up.

Case closed.

At the end of the day, every player has a price and it is naïve to think that Coutinho is so devoted that he wouldn't consider another offer. The most important things are that we get as much money as we can and then spend as wisely as possible.

You're absolutely correct, MK Scouse. There's no point keeping somebody that doesn't want to be there.

It also frustrates me when players use lack of Champions League as a reason, as I they had no impact on the failure to qualify. If the whole team, including Coutinho, had been more consistent, we'd have got fourth place at least.

Be sorry to see him go but if they've not bought in to the project then wish them well and move on. The club will always be bigger than any one individual.

If he really wants to go then we should let him and wish him luck.
Great player but no point keeping him if he's unhappy.
There is a good chance we could replace him with Goetze and use the left over money to buy a new left back and that's not exactly a backwards step.
I will miss him personally but he's not irreplaceable, if the eds have known for a while he wanted to go then the club should have as well and hopefully his replacement is already lined up.

Can't really agree with you MK. The fact is in the end selling your best players will always cause some level of disruption. Sometimes this can be managed by bringing in a quality replacement or changing the formation/ system to suit the new squad, but often this only works for a short period of time and eventually if you keep selling your best players it catches up with you and the team suffers for it.

The fact is Dortmund struggled to replace lost players. When they had Reus, Goetze and Lewandowski they were immense. They haven't yet replaced those two effectively. Aalthough Mkitaryan and Aubamayeng have exeellent years, it now looks like they too will be leaving. So where does that leave Dortmund now? Trying to replace again. Sometimes you can but often you can't.

Not saying we're doomed of Countino leaves at all. I just think that we should be holding on to as many of our better players as we can and I reject the idea that "it's okay if he leaves because we've got Firmino" - we should want BOTH of them because they're both quality and both contracted to our club already!

Most of the clubs your mentioned in your OP replaces X players with X players which we don't. Coutinho moving out would be a bad message to outside world in the first place. Lack of CL and poor performance on the league from last two years would put serious doubt among players.
Not always about Money.
Arsenal sold RVP to UTD and he scored 30 goals securing the title while Arsenal themselves bought Sanchez and Ozil who are fine players.
The clubs you mention mainly Chelsea, City, Arsenal and UTD has no problem in attracting A class players to them.

Game of Thrones, did it escape your memory that Coutinho cost us £8m from Inter Milan reserves?

You don't need to sign "A class players". Whatever that even is. You just have to sign the right players.

Leicester are proof that it is a team game. To my mind there's only ever been 1 player close to a 1-man team and that is Maradona. No-one else has come close.
To win things you need organisation, clear strategy, team spirit, camaraderie and a bit of good fortune.
If a player is not 100% committed then it is better to let them move on. It's always been the case.
Coutinho has been a very good player for us and hasn't caused us one moment of controversy but if he's no longer 100% committed then I wish him good luck elsewhere.
If it's all rumour and speculation and he wants to stay then I will be delighted to see him play for us.

Selling your "best" player is only an issue when they are far and away the best player and rest are bang average.

I remember when Rush was sold and was gutted as lived not far away - however he wasn't our "best" player there was pure quality in the rest of the 1st team.
He scored loads but the midfield behind him was pure quality.

Firmino could play where Coutinho plays and then we fill in around that.
Numerous posters say we need wingers- this makes room for them.

Cheers MK, at the end of the day, Kloppo is no stranger to this way of working. It used to happen to him at Dortmund too but he made the team a priority rather than individual stars. I've no concerns if we sell any of our players, Klopp can replace them.

I'm with MK on this. We're not Barca, Real etc. We will inevitably lose our best players. But it is important that we have a core of a team to move forward without being derailed too much. To me coutinho is a complimentary piece around star players as oppossed to being a star player himself (at the mo) . We are talking as tho we would be losing a suarez type player here. But he doesn't have the same kind of impact or control of a game. He has pockets of brilliance and long periods of average-ness. To be clear, I'd prefer we kept him and kept adding the right pieces to the team because he has a key role. But, and especially if he wants to go, then its better he be elsewhere.
