I don't get it if Alonso is guy for the summer would it not make more sense to get him in right now? I know one thought in my mind is its disrespectful to slot winning the title and being top 4 and undefeated in like 12-13 games and players are starting to find their feet now - wirtz, ekitike, frimpong.

But if players and management are done with slot it doesn't make sense to continue when your no1 target is available, Its not financial either as its slot is in his final 6 months i think Thoughts? Eds is Alonso our no1 target or something I misread?

{Ed001's Note - he was the one they wanted before Slot, he would be top of the list if Slot goes, but they are giving Slot time to turn it around first.}

Do you see evidence he can turn it around? Half the season is done. Title is out of our hands and i mean i don't see us wining 17 out of 17 to even have a slim chance. The way we are playing its only matter of time we are knocked out of CL and FA cup. I think good time to get Alonso in without any burden of expectations and just nail top 4 and then go for everything next season. I understand the sentiment but it feels we are delaying the inevitable and in my opinion results will get worse if we continue with the waffle with slot and if we miss top4 would be catastrophic.

I get it we are not a sacking club but literally all big players at club have come out and said it indirectly - salah vvd macca szobo … Fingers crossed he does turn it around but if he is not winning the CL, whatever he does now at the end of the season this season will be probably considered a failure for us. I think we will sack him once we get knocked out of CL and won't wait till end of season.

Slot is contracted untill June '27 cafu, as you mentioned, players finding there feet suggests he hasn't lost the dressing room and we're still in with a shout for the fa cup, champions league and top 4, probably not best to rock the boat right now whilst we're on an upturn results wise whilst still not being convincing.

Do you think Ed if another club came in for Alonso that would force our hand?

{Ed001's Note - I would not expect that to matter to us. We are not so short sighted as to act like that.}

Slot has one more season on his contract.

Oh ok. Got that wrong. Happy with slot turning it around but i fear that its a bit too late now and we are a defensive injury away from catastrophe.

We're a defensive injury away from "catastrophe" whoever is in charge.

If I was in charge of this, I'd become very short sighted very quickly ED01! He ain't turning this ship around. More probably he'll run it aground! Have a good day everyone.

Maybe Alonso doesn't want to jump straight into a new job, Cafu?

Absolute no evidence apart from Salah going off on one after been dropped to suggest the players are done with him. That seems more like wishful thinking.

@Shankly's Ghosr, if you were in charge and in this imaginary world you brought in Alonso and he, say, lost 4 and drew 2 of his first 6 games, would you make an excuse for him or would you sack him?

@Longthing76, that's the thing. After Slot won the title, normally, he should have gotten an extension. But he didn't. I find that a bit odd BUT what do I know, right? Now what I do know is that if he doesn't get an extension this season at any point then, he is off in the summer via a payoff, IMO.

Cos I have NEVER heard of a manager or head coach in any sport coaching for a new contract when entering the last year of his deal. Players? Yes. Managers/ head coaches? No.

The reason I won't back slot it's not the results that bother me or even the position in the league it's the drab performances. It started last season and it's got worse. Even at our lowest point in games he refused to utilise the squad! We have some good young players and "reserve" players too yet he wouldn't use them? He either doesn't know they exist or how to use them.

The " he won the league gang" would have us believe he doesn't trust them so a whole squad built by world class manager is being judged by a coach who won a Mickey Mouse league and a prem on the back of that world class managers squad. Yeh see you in obscurity slot mate.

Would Alonso have known we were interested before he went to Madrid? = Yes but he chose Madrid over us
Got a lot of respect for the guy but for that reason, i wouldn't want him to come in.

@WDW. No. But I wouldn't have sacked Slot after that either. My opinion on AS is that he's had since last July to put his stamp on the club. Which he has. So there's my side of the fence.

14.) 14 Jan 2026
14 Jan 2026 11:36:39
He didn't choose Madrid over us, Rd. He chose to stay at Leverkusen. He had just won the league with them and wanted to progress them further instead of jumping to another club. His decision to do that should be respected imo.

15.) 14 Jan 2026
14 Jan 2026 12:21:27
He chose Madrid. He knew of our interest before leaving Leverkusen but chose to go there. That's my opinion and i'm entitled to it. It may be the case the club are now looking to bring him in at the end of this season, and if that's the case, good luck to him. Just wouldn't be my choice is all.

16.) 14 Jan 2026
14 Jan 2026 12:22:56
I agree, Dracred. Saw a ton of people here slagging him off for picking Madrid over us at the time. As if a human being is no longer allowed to make decisions for himself and his own future anymore w/ o other people losing their marbles cos they don't like the decision he made.

17.) 14 Jan 2026
14 Jan 2026 12:46:16
But he is Spanish, and managing the biggest club in the world which is also Spanish. So all around everything normally would be going for him except Madrid was a toxic club. To say no to somebody because you are his 2nd choice is very short sighted. Do forget Alonso was forced out of Liverpool when he was a player by Benetiz.

You can have an opinion all you want mate but it's still objectively wrong. We wanted him in 2024 when Klopp announced his retirement but he left Leverkusen only in 2025. By then we already had Slot and he had won the PL with us. Alonso definitely knew of our interest before we appointed Slot but he chose to stay at Leverkusen after the amazing season he had with them.

Unless you are suggesting that he decided to stay at Leverkusen despite our interest because he was assured that RM would be in for him the following season. Then fair play to you.

{Ed001's Note - but then it would still be objectively wrong as they were busy trying to get Klopp at that time.}

14 Jan 2026 13:44:23
You mean real were trying to get klopp to replace ancelotti, ed?

{Ed001's Note - yes. They have tried to get Klopp for years. Pretty much every time they have needed a new manager they went for him in the last 10 years. He was always the first choice.}

Sounds like Postecoglu is your man, scousejohn. If you're not bothered by results or position in the league.

PB, indeed. This is why I big up the Ed's podcasts and listen whenever I can. After the 22/ 23 season, the Ed's had a podcast where they talked about how RM wanted Klopp to take the job despite Carlo winning the CL and Barcelona winning La Liga. Instead, Klopp refused to take the job and decided to stay at LFC to fix what he thought he was responsible for breaking in that troubling season.

I will always be thankful for the podcasts they do as there is so much knowledge for all of us to learn. And of course, it's quite a good laugh esp. with Ed25 providing the material, lol.
