If john stones can play in midfield why can't trent? We are wasting him as a right because now he is a liability there . I bet if he was in the man city side gaurdiola would have him ripping it up in midfield.

I think the difference is Stones plays in a system that allows him to venture forward and at the same time expects him to sit back sometimes - without ever exposing him or his team mates. Our system (or the players in the system) is set up in a way that leaves our flanks exposed or our CBs under pressure when Trent marches forward. Trent is an excellent right back in the right system.

John Stones is also a defender who used to be error prone, but is now extremely solid and pretty flawless (something I never thought he could do) . There is hope for Trent doing the same.

Trent can either play in midfield or he can’t but I’m at a loss what it has to do with John Stones. OP are you saying that we should play the same way Citeh do, with inverted fullbacks (whatever that’s supposed to be) ?

So why can't we adapt trent into a system that is not exposing him in almost every game, even shxt teams are ripping him its not good for his confidence and we are missing a trick, the pinpoint passing from the middle of the park would be very helpful and the opposition would not have the weapon of targeting the right back area if say gomez was there. Its just intelligent creative management which i am not seeing.

Stones steps into a well organised working midfield and isn’t expected to be De Bruyne.

I think If Trent goes into midfield we don’t want him being just another number but we want him being our best midfielder.

I think that’s where the difference is.

Thing is we will never know if the management continually play him in an area that he has been found out and not tweek things to give the opposition something less to attack us with. If you look at all our goals conceded it would be interesting to see how many are from the right hand side or trent being skinned.

Fabinho and Gomez for right back and Trent plus the new midfielders fight it out for the best combination in our new set up. Unless Trent gets back to the form he showed pre dreadlocks.

Jk- hammer, nail, head. It isn't a case of chucking Trent in the middle and saying ping some passes. It will create a whole new system for the entire squad. City have players to play that system, whereas the rest of our MF is already massively underperforming. I think Trent would be massively exposed in the middle with our current players.

Jezza Kyle, Fabhino at RB is asking for more trouble than we have now. he's slow, makes silly fouls and will be ran past constantly. His firm is so far off the cliff its swimming. Awful idea, he's one of the ones that needs a new club next season.

{Ed002's Note - Actually Liverpool looked at Fabinho initially as a RB.}

@haillstones if Trent can’t tackle to save his life what use will he be in midfield plus he never track back to fight for ball back it would be like having a missining midfielder he’s best off staying at right back or moving up to salahs role.

John Stones is far from a flawless defender. c'mon guys.

I’m sure if we had a DM and a RCM who had the legs to cover the spaces like in previous years then Trent would look world class at RB again.
The answer is sorting out the midfield, not moving one of our best players out of position.

Trent can tackle and he does work hard in most games (definitely needs to sort out why he has at least 1 game a month where he barely lifts a finger though) . His biggest problem is he doesn't track his man when they run off the back of him. Which i think could be an issue still even if he played in midfield. But an issue that will expose us less as there will at least be players behind him. His passing could probably do more damage from midfield though. It's a tough one but it isn't working with him at right back so might as well try something different!

If Jordan Pickford can play goalkeeper, why can't Trent?

Trents lack of awareness and concentration for a full back is shocking and I even said in the live game comments that at times it's like playing with 9 men because when he is having a little nap other players are being pulled out of position trying to cover him.

He came to life in the Arsenal game because he got a little worked up but before that he was in a deep snooze.

In all honesty, unless we are going back to our previous style of play, I'd sell him. He can be brilliant but mostly not.

Another issue with Trent’s defending is that he often fails to play on the half turn. When he is square-on, it’s so easy for a pacey winger to simply knock the ball past him and run into the open space behind. Again this may be something that’s less of an issue in centre mid.

Also, I keep reading press-resistant. Is this basically comfortable on the ball under pressure? I’m useless with modern terminology.

Cheers.

Was Trents defending also atrocious when we were winning leagues and European Cups? i mean, mad people were actually calling him the best rightback on the planet. Crazy isn't it.

Trent's got so many faults, can he even kick a ball straight?
Yet 2 years ago he was being heralded as one of the best young fullbacks anywhere.
From hero to zero in half a season because the team is collectively poor.

If Trent cane defend then he should be on the bench and not change the whole dynamics of a team to fit one player. And why would we play like City?

@Hailstones, I have NO interest in whatever City do and I don't want us to play anything like them. Also, what tha football does whatever John Stones (who is NOT even a FB who can do the things Klopp asks Trent to do) can or can't do, have to do with Trent and his many roles with LFC?

I also fully agree with the takes from MKS and Mikey. Trent is hardworking and has had many great defensive performances thru out his time at R. Just go back to the FA Cup semi final and final last season as well as the Carabao final to see his performances there where he even outperformed Reece James by a mile, IMO.

The issue is that he can get lazy at times and not sense clear danger. Sometimes, you see him know the player is running off him or knows the danger is there and suddenly he'll just stop and not react. he doesn't play with his head on a swivel when defending towards his goal. These are fundamental thing he used to be decent at (NOT great) BUT cos the whole team is out of whack, those flaws are MORE apparent.

He needs to improve and we need to go back to the way we used to play (with the right RCM in front of him) that brought out his strengths and mitigated his defensive weaknesses while he improves on them cos I refuse to believe that a RB who has won it ALL and been in teams that finished with the best or 2nd best defense in the league in 4 of the past 5 years, CAN'T defend.

@FlashTheRed in the current setup Trent has shown little interest or ability, he is a million miles from the player he was over the last few years except for the occasional flash.
If, as it seems, Klopp is changing his approach to a more possion based system then going by Trents showings this season he is not fit for purpose.
I also am sure that everyone criticising him would love nothing better but to see TAA recover his game and become vital to LFC the question is how long do we wait.
I'm aware there are other players we could say the same about from VvD to Henderson et al.

The idea that he. Isn’t a full back so let’s put him in the midfield doesn’t strike me as an organised or thought out plan. As has been said, if the club think that Trent can’t play right back then drop him - we have Bradley and Ramsey in the wings. As one or two people have said over the past 2 years let’s buy some midfielders ….

John stones was another one the bitters pushed out their club and the lad has now won more trophies the everton have in their history .
