Hi eds,
Trivial question for you really, with rumours that Brendan Rodgers might return to England with Arsenal in the near future (not that I personally put much faith, if any, in baseless paper talk), I was just wondering what you're thoughts on his capabilities as a manager are now, nearly three years on from his sacking? It's clear he's done (at least domestically) a great job at Celtic, but frankly I'd expect most half decent managers to be able to do that! Do you think he's really "Britain's best manager" (again, just quoting from third parties! ), or has the hype around his Celtic tenure distracted from legitimate failings as a manager? Obviously I know this is all trivial, but recent rumours had got me thinking, and if you have time to give and opinion it would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

{Ed0333's Note - he’s not even Scotland’s best manager so how can he be Britain’s best manager? Don’t believe the gravitas he’s a very good coach and not a super manager. If arsenal appoint him they’ll rue the day.

He's from Northern Ireland and lives and works in Scotland. How does that make him Britain's best?

Sorry ed- just saw your reply, so I'd better explain: Britain is England and Wales. The UK is England, Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland.

ps would love to see him at Arsenal. The debate re his 'success' getting 2nd in the prem being down to him or Suarez is still debatable. The only way to tell if he's any good will be if he comes back to the prem. The proof will be in the pudding!

{Ed0333's Note - from what I can gather him getting us second place was due to Suarez having a point to prove and Biesla instructing him to play a certain way. The season after we came second we played the most impotent football I’ve seen since Hodgson. I just don’t rate the guy he went up to Scotland to restablish his reputation which he has done but he’s not a top 6 team manager in England. I don’t think spurs, Man City, Arsenal, Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool fans would want him anywhere near their club. He would be a great fit at Everton mind.

I think any manager would do a decent job at Celtic, they are the league. It's hardly a test been a Celtic manager lol I don't mind Arsenal to be honest, I hope for their sake they don't go down that route, but probably nonsense, surely they aren't that daft.

{Ed0333's Note - I would love Rogers at Arsenal. Their would be thousands of WENGER IN banners within weeks all over the Emirates stadium.

If you are talking Scottish football then with no rangers, celtic are going to win every time. If they didn't then he could possibly be the worst manager in the World. I could manage celtic to the title. My father was from Aberdeen and they are the only team that has ever really interrupted celtic and rangers winning the league every year. With rangers not what they were, of course celtic win the league. With Aberdeen the only team that is even a remote threat. I actually thought he was alright. Nearly won us the league. Did really, who could of predicted that slip. Breaks my heart every time I think of it. Made some poor signings but made some good ones too. I've got no problem with the Brodge. I actually think he will be good for arsenal. I respect Wenger, could have gone to any club. They all wanted him (he could have gone, failed and slipped into mediocrity) but he stayed with arsenal. It was his connection to that amazing France team that made them the invincibles. They have never really done much since, should of won European Cup. With my head, Wenger should have moved on years ago, I do like a team that keeps their manger long term, but once it goes flat, it's like a relationship, that sparkle has gone from their eyes and its never the same again. Sometimes you keep trying but it's a farce, face reality and find something new and exciting. With my heart I feel sorry for him. Like a captain going down with his ship. The players are soaking that bad vibe and they're not playing for him. They have some top top players, some World class strikers, midfielders. Where are they?

If he comes back to the prem he will definitely be the manger with the brightest teeth. Forget manager person with the brightest teeth. Bobby won’t be happy.

Credit where credit's due, he was expected to dominate with Celtic but he raised the bar last season with just what that meant.

Playing devils advocate, isn’t Britain England, Wales and Scotland and the UK basically Britain + Northen Ireland?

He had a great season in 13/ 14 and rightly should be praised for that, but the way he reshaped the side when Suarez left was a bad joke - why did he try to completely change the style of play (eg Benteke) rather than simply replacing Suarez with a similar style player and continuing the momentum and free flowing attacking play? That was 100% down to him and he deserves the criticism for the turgid football that followed and the likes of the results against Stoke as much as he deserved the plaudits for the year before.

People can learn from their mistakes but it’s hard to judge if he’s learnt yet or not simply by results in Scotland. I would hope for their sake Arsenal would go for a more proven manager.

Arsenal job is a poisoned chalice as Wenger has been there so long. It will be similar to Moyes after Fergie left.

Bad move for Brendan.

I don't know Ron, it's rare for a UK manager to be offered the bigger jobs in the PL. Rodgers has pretty much achieved all that can be expected in Scotland, if he's ambitious then he'd be crazy to turn down Arsenal. It might be his one chance to redeem himself after Liverpool.

Agree with Ron on this one, the Arsenal job is a tough one for whoever takes over after Wenger.
I think Rodgers best move could be abroad; didn't he learn Spanish I seem to remember?

Agreed SG, people can learn from their mistake. The problem with bodgers was he didn’t think he made any mistakes. He blamed everything else ( most of all the players he bought) and took zero responsibility.

If Arsenal get BR, they are welcome to him, his pathetic comments in the media, his arrogance, and oh btw, the fact that nothing is ever his fault just like Wenger. BR is a crap manager and got found out for the incompetent manager he is (Scottish league is a non starter) when LS left. Compare that to Klopp who when Cou, our proverbial best player (patently false, btw), many thought we would struggle and yet here we are, fighting for 2nd. That is what differenciates a top manager and one who plays one on TV and of course, in Scotland.
