One of the most controversial and contradictory post from you in a very long time Ed! You have compared some managers on what thye have won over years while others on the style of their footie, a few based on what they did for the club! How did you miss Moyes is beyond me. Unai Emery is currently a cheque book manager and I can’t see him win CL this season! Not sure how did you include Martin O Neil. He had a good time at Aston Villa if I remember as well Monk at Leeds. First manager to bring them back into contention.
Pep might be a cheque book man but he played one of the best footie I have seen my life! He managed a team of egoes and took them right above everyone. Big club choose him, he don’t choose clubs!
You also missed Brendan 😄😄. Glad you missed Jose and Rafa.

So before the super aliens take me down or back this I would love you to back this argument by writing two more articles on “ Most underrated “ “ Worlds best top 10 “
Pretty sure Klopp would feature in both without a doubt!

Good read mate! I expect the new list to feature Sarri, Poch, Jeorge Jesus, Allegri and many more.

Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - Moyes is not highly rated any more, he is almost a laughing stock, so why would I include him? Emery did damn well at Sevilla without a chequebook. O'Neill is crap, hoofball and ruins the clubs, leaving them a shambles when he goes, with over the hill players on huge contracts. And yet you support Pep while calling Emery a chequebook manager, how does that work? There is no argument, it is simply a suggestion of a few managers that the media overrates. By the time I get round to a new list most of those managers will probably have retired.}

! Emery did damn well at Sevilla but at PSG he he has been average. What about Wenger and Pochetino?

{Ed001's Note - then how can you call him a chequebook manager, when he did well without money but is average with it? Makes no sense Harry.

What about Wenger and Pochettino?}

Great read but why wasn't hodgeson on there a truly awful manager?

Very interesting and informative.

But I could not get past Yogi Loew - from now on I will always imagine Joachim Löw sitting cross-legged at the sideline while saying his mantra.

Yeah I don't think hodgeson is highly rated anymore, I think managing England destroys any managers reputation, Southgate will be hung, drawn and quartered by the press after the next tournament you watch.

a good read that ed001, its about time someone called out hughes, howe and koeman, hughes is taking stoke backwards, koeman is to negative and sadly eddie howe is awful when it comes to spending money, and boy did Liverpool dodge a bullet by not appointing de boer as manager.

{Ed001's Note - thank you kk7, always nice to get the King's approval ;-)

As I see t certain managers find their home at certain clubs maybe due to budgets/ expectations/ fans etc but some make a move too soon, Rodgers etc, some take the wrong job e. g. Frank de boxer trying to implement one system in a team never capable of that football. While I agree pep always has a great team and money he is entertaining. Mourinho spends fortunes but hey he wins things. I like klopp. He has his faults but I think he suits our club, lots of potential but still not quite there yet. Hopefully we can grow together. We need to manage our expectations and he needs to learn how to build a defensive unit etc, would you ever do a review on referees? Obviously us fans like to use them as an excuse but I do believe the average premier league referee is sub par, granted it's a difficult job but they get paid rather handsomely.

I would love him to do on the most underrated managers!

{Ed001's Note - it has been added to the to do list.}

Nice one ed. I'm not sure if it was intended in this way but it's nice to see someone on the other side of the "klopp is an average manager" debate. I never realised pep guardiola took Munich backwards! Yet klopp is the man getting slaughtered, even though he broke munichs monopoly on the German league.
In regards to Southgate, the media has destroyed every England manager since venebles and made the position not as desirable as it should be and along with the influx of foreign managers in England there really weren't that many choices. I think harry "the crook" red knap should have been given a chance. Didn't Southgate get the job because of his work with the u21s? Where he had success. Many of the lads he worked with are now in the senior team. I agree though, that apart from work with kids he really hasn't done anything in his managerial career.

Really good article though ed01. Well written and balanced (critical is the word we use at uni) nice one mate.

{Ed001's Note - thank you mate. It was a hard one to do.}

Ed I must say, I can't argue with anything you said about those managers esp. Zidane and Deschamps. As for Emery, he is a great manager and great tactician and was successful w/ o money and with a tight budget. At PSG tho? We shall see as he has been given all the money and two best players (Mbappe and Ney) on the planet so we shall see what he does. All in all, I agree with your post and take on things.

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate.}

Very interesting list, and even more interesting replies. Is good being rated as great as much of an overestimation as poor being rated as good? Or even genuinely woeful being rated as poor?

I think Roy hodgson gets a raw deal. We actually played some nice football under him, much nicer than the football we play under Southgate. The harry kane on corners debate, I can actually see hodgson's logic there. I'm not saying I agree with it but, in international tournament football, corners are massive. Games are nearly always very very tight, with no one taking any risks. You might go through a whole game with out a clear cut chance or only one or two shots on goal. Harry kane best attribute is his accuracy with the ball, he Is also decent on his head but not the best. With kane on corners you near guarantee that the ball will go into the danger area and will find an England head. I wouldn't have done it because I want my best, natural goal scorer in the area when the ball is but it wasn't a totally illogical decision.

Every manager plays different styles and has their own philosophy, so every time we don't win a tournament we sack the boss and go back to square one. I think the England manager should be given time, so the players (who don't play together anywhere near enough) get used to their role.

Or may be England need some good players as well supper red! Give that job to Jose and he will struggle. That backline and midfiled is ridiculously average! They can’t get out of Grpup stages! Coz they are overrated to core!

Haven't had the chance to look at this yet but asking Ed to include Martin oNeill just no! As an Irish supporter he is terrible. Yes I know we don't have the best quality of player but he stifles any quality that is there. Doesn't allow players to attempt to play ball when many of the do just that week in week out at club level. Hoolahan is streets ahead every time he puts on the shirt yet isn't the 1st name on the sheet because he would demand us to keep the ball on the floor, and not lob it up to someone like Murphy. Then there's his need to stick with the dull "reliable" old (past it) players instead of giving new emerging or young players a chance.

{Ed001's Note - it was the inclusion of MON as overrated that upset the Celtic fans when they saw the list!}

I will never get Joachim Löw out of my head for picking his nose on camera (unbeknownst to him) and slyly eating the fruits of his labour at a match.
Absolutely brilliant Soccer AM 3rd eye video on YT of it if you haven't seen it already.

Good post Ed. My only surprise is that somehow Rafa Benitez avoided the list!

As great as he was/ is, he is as much a cheque book manager as anyone else and he always ends up falling out with senior management and senior players!

Lovely man, unlike Tuchel, but very similar problems in my opinion. I suppose unlike Tuchel though, Rafa has actually won some major trophies and is a bit of a cup specialist. I just think he lacks the ambition in games to ever consistently challenge for league titles. His conservatism nearly cost Newcastle a Championship Winners medal that they should've had wrapped up by Christmas.
