I noticed that Arsenal also use the inverted full back tactic with Zinchenko pushing up into the midfield

They are not left so vulnerable at the back, or at least haven't been tested as yet, with this system.

It's obviously a tactic that Pep and Arteta like, but why does it look like it works for them?

Is it because they have better suited players, or is it just a matter of time before they are exposed.

or, what we could do. Is just utilise the tactics that made up premier league and champions league winners?

I know the style isn’t popular but you do have to bear in mind that we are 16 league games unbeaten (w 11, d 5). From my own point of view I’m enjoying the games this season, tactics aside (which is how I tend to watch matches) - I actually think they have been exciting and enjoyable.

The tactic we used when winning the league is easily exploited because teams have adapted. The centre backs will invite pressure then get it wide fast, the only true gegenpress that seems to work in this day and age is 442 as the full backs don’t leave enormous gaps.

Yes we are 16 games unbeaten but how many of those games was a result achieved after switching tactics midgame? So far this season only against Villa it was sucessful and even then it was a teaked setup.

Well Arsenal have been practicing it for way longer, that could be the first reason. The second is that artery actually spend a bunch of money on assembling a squad build for the tactic. I’d argue you could see last season how big of a difference the performance of the tactic had when they were missing zinchenko. Shoehorning players into the position who couldn’t do it.

City dropped it last season and changed to playing with 4 centerbacks (ofc hybrid types who can cover the sides e. g. ake, Gvardiol) so that Stones can push forward in midfield from a central position instead of a drifting from the flanks. Makes everything so much easier which clearly works a lot better than inverted fullback- looking at city’s results before and after the changes.

It’s more teams than that. Off the top of my head, this season has seen:
• Spurs play an inverted full back with Emerson and Porro both having played the role in games from right back.
• Luke Shaw played as an inverted fullback vs Wolves before his injury for man united
• Arsenal play an inverted fullback with either Partey or Zinchecnko play the role

There’s probably lots more across the big leagues doing it too.

Or perhaps Arsenal simply have a very good squad that isn’t reaching its full potential because of an overcomplicated, silly tactic that doesn’t actually work. Arsenal got 84 points in a season where nearly all the big teams underperformed, hardly a brilliant record. Not only that, they have a tendency to win games by one goal even against vastly inferior opponents while dominating the ball but not creating a large number of chances - the sign of a team that is good but not special. Arsenal are not as good a team as the cost of assembly suggests they should be, and a lot of that is down to their tactics.

We aren't though Jude. We are losing, until we revert to formula and then we win.

Because they all play it with 3 cbs and a full back.

We play with 2 cbs and two fullbacks.

White saliba Gabriel zinchenko
Walker diaz ake gvardiol

Taa konate vvd Robertson

Doesn't work without the 3 cbs. Hence, I imagine, the push for hincapie. If true. Or atleast a left footed cb.

Adaptability (being able to flex across games and within games and with the right players to be able to do it or accepting of doing it) generates sustainability (maintaining a position of excellence through the successful achievement of trophies) .

WDW, has it right. We're winning.

I'm all for style and playing spectacularly, but I want the wins above all. Wins at the cost of playing with a system that I don't agree with? I'll take it.

That’s not true tho Lamborini.
Against Chelsea we scored early on, they scored before half time

Against Bournemouth we conceded early, nothing to do with the formation and Liverpool got 2 before HT

Against Newcastle we had to make a change because of the sending off early on, we conceded due to an individual error (Trent), nothing to do with formation.

Aston Villa 3-0 win easy

That leaves only the Wolves games where we had to come from behind in the second half.

Barca are doing the inverted full back, but only on the right, Cancelo since starting for them regularly goes into CM, if required he drops into CB and Kunde moves to the right.

Cancelo scored the other night running through from central mid.

Barca looked very good, albeit they weren’t playing a top top side.

Just to add, J Felix played on the left wing, moving inside regularly to allow Blade space on the left wing, people here mentioned Felix as an option, it wasn’t for me, but, he’s been excellent for Barcelona on the left as mentioned, although early doors I must say, yet it’s far the best I’ve seen him play.

Like I say adaptability and versatility is key including personnel ability to adapt and be versatile such that we don’t call x a CB and y a FB etc etc but they have a versatility to do either / or in a variety of formations.

In four of our six games this season we have scored 3 goals. The most we have conceded this season in any game is 1. I’m happy to admit that I don’t possess any UEFA coaching badges and that I’m only interested in tactics in as much as I’d like those used to help us win games. I’d also add that adapting tactics during the course of a game seems - as I say to my untutored version of the tactical world - seems reasonable.

From my simplistic “Let’s watch the match’ approach, I’d have to say we are not going too badly so far this season.

At least we have moved on from the need for midfielders this season. I even saw a post earlier in the week that said we don’t need Andre (or any other DM / CM) because we have enough. I had to sir down with the shock.
