Just want to get some thoughts.

Some people have gone on to say Elliot's injury has been coming due to allowing more rough contact.

Someone even Launched an attack of Riley and PGMOL. While they are very nice incompetent, I don't think this is the incident to raise hell with them.

Personally, I think the tackles by Leeds were no where as poor as those by Burnley. But the tackle that got Elliot injured is the same kind that Fab does regularly too. And when it works out, it's nice to see, hypes the crowd, and what you expect of defensive play.

Am I old, biased or just misinformed?

I don’t think they are allowing more ‘rough’ contact. they are just not giving soft body contact fouls.

At first glance I just thought it was an ordinary tackle, not malicious. I thought the red was harsh. Unfortunately, due to the distressing aspect of the incident I imagine replays and different angles aren't out there to see and make a more informed judgement.

It was a complete freak injury. As you said, Burnley was akin to Rugby League the way they were going about it.

OP, I fully agree. It was a freak injury and a complete accident. I thought the red was harsh as well BUT I can see why the ref gave it. The tackle was not the issue. The outcome is the tackle dictated the red, IMO. Not saying I agree. Just saying I can kind of see what the ref was thinking. Don't know what the rules are in this instance so we will have to see.

As for the ref Pawson himself? He was utterly dreadful all game long on both teams. He should have sent Cooper off for the blatant off the ball elbow on Jota YET he did nothing.

I agree with you sgynwa and BurkeyBoy. If the resulting injury wasn't so horrific, the tackle wouldn't have been analysed in slo-mo and wouldn't have been picked out.

It is a reminder that football is a contact sport and, on occasion, an everyday challenge (as you say, Fabs and others tackle like this) can, unfortunately, result in awful injuries.

I wouldn't blame the Leeds player, it was just terrible luck for Harvey.

{Ed025's Note - i think you have got it spot on zed..

The rule is if you are endangering the opponent then it’s a straight red so it’s difficult to argue when the outcome is what it was. That being said it’s a tackle you see a lot and the vast, vast, vast majority won’t result in serious injury like this one did.
Just unfortunate that Harvey had his foot in that position at the time the player landed. Hey it’s football, it happens.
We just need to support the lad and hope he comes back as soon as possible and picks up where he left off.

Footballs a contact sport and whilst there is definitely no room for maliciousness in the game sadly freak accidents happen. That tackle could have happened 100 times and 99 times Elliot would have got up and tried winning the ball back.
