Terrible game to watch, as bad as Utd/Spurs! Obviously can't complain about the 3 points and winning ugly is great so will take it but in the spirit of discussion and observations.
- Thought our slow tempo only helped Stoke and not us
- We played one terrible ball after another to Benteke, yet he won 99% of his headers. let's figure better balls to him
- I love to hear the observations of the fans at the game, as while they don't see as much of the overall picture as you do watching TV, you get a much better sense of how individual players are doing (Lucas was always a great example of that. amazing to watch live as cut off some many channels that weren't picked up by the TV coverage)
- thought Lovren played well
- was really frustrated by the slow distribution from Migs
- Can made an immediate impact when he came on. he is still young and raw but he could be a young Souness?
- Overall thought we were mostly predictable and it was only the genius of Coutinho (90% of which didn't finally work out. but love the thought/idea), that was the difference between the teams
- Yes, it is only game 1 but I see the same challenges again as last year where we end up passing the ball back and forth for most of the game outside of the other teams box without threatening
- Not going player by player but the new boys showed well for the most part

To beat Stoke away and do it without playing particularly well at all, is a very good sign this early in the season in my opinion.

I think last year we would of lost that game (not to state the obvious as we clearly did - meaning more that type of game). You have to look at Stoke away as a very tough game, we haven't gone there all gung ho (hopefully be learning some lessons). Yes it took a moment of genius, but that's why you pay the money, to make the difference in tight games. And clearly no fluke by couts as he's done it many times. So all in all, happy with the result and will be happier if Can (based on his performance) starts next week, that would show me a little that br has learnt from his past 3 season, ie rewarding players who play well and not benching them. Also promising defending.

Maybe just living in hope.

Go back to the 1st game we played them when we finished 2nd in the league - we didn't play well and we were far from great and took a bit of magic from mignonette to stop walters penalty so don't look into everything too much,

1. Fitness - Players were very static

2. Regardless of what anyone says last year will be in a lot of players heads and what that means is "right i don't want to be pushing forward to much here incase I can't get back and it happens again"

Solid performance and a great result - 3 points - At least give it 5 games before we look at performance - Plus UTD won the league how many times playing ugly football and winning in the final 10 minutes, Sure someone once said that is what makes a team Champions not smashing people 5-3 every other week

Liverpool can win like that all season for me. Eventually, when teams struggle to break you down then you find the ability to possibly play more exciting football. I just can't understand how so many complain about the goals we have let in over the last few seasons, then when things might be altered to sort it out they say we are boring. We have to stop leaking goals. If that means being more sterile then so be it. I would love us to go the first 10 games or so being tight as a ducks arse. Letting the other teams wonder how to break us down. Defence wins leagues!!

We've only had one win at Stoke prior to yesterday in 7 years. It's an extremely tough place to play. hence why Messi couldn't do it on a cold night in Stoke.

RJB your tough to please , i hope we play like that all season if it means we win all our games 1-0 , but you don't want that by the sounds of it , your moaning about the % even couthino you say he missed 90% of the time , well at least he tried lad , ffs get a grip its the 1st game of the season and after our last game with them we were rightly weary of them , not a lot of team will go there and keep a clean sheet and win , there is no way on earth that a team can play football where everything they try comes off , but you think we should be doing that and everything we try will come off , all our players have not played 10 games together . gomez had his 1st ever game in the prem and he was up against a very tough player in walters who knows all the tricks in the book plus he was playing out of position , if couthino never had any shots he would be getting slated by fans like you , it was only 2 seasons ago a lot of fans were moaning he never scored enough goals well for him to score goals he has to shoot because his goals are mostly out of the area so again he has to shoot , and yes he will miss most of them but he will score screamers like he did yesterday and win us games so i hope he continues to shoot , i am happy with the win and 3 points and the fact it was an away game , that's one out of the way , so be happy with them facts or would you prefer us to play fast attacking football and leave ourselves open at the back and lose the game , i would not

Liverpool Hotel:
Coming over from the US for Chelsea game. Any thoughts on whether Days Inn City Centre or Premier Inn Albert Dock would be a better option for hotel?
Many thanks!

I had the delusional thoughts through the early part of the World Cup that Suarez would be a Pool icon for many more years. and then the bizarre stories started coming out of his unhappiness with the English press, or being slighted at not being missed for games, etc, etc. So I think to myself, this guy while a football genius is perhaps somewhat unbalanced, as in, the fine line between genius and madness? He seems great when in the cocoon of Melwood/Anfield and feeling the love/affection and then when he is distant the Twilight Zone crazy animal on the wing of the plane syndrome kicks in. And I really think that is the case. With distance, the demons set in. and then of course the madness happens!

Now with all the rumors of the Liverpool action in the transfer market, it is pretty apparent (despite these stories only being rumors) that Pool have moved on. And I think I am almost at peace with that. almost! Hard to give up on arguably one of the top 3 players in the world. but the club is always the ultimate and you look at Gerrard and his hard decision not to join Chelsea and stay with Pool, etc, etc and you look at Suarez and the constant drama. and you know what, let's just move on.

I could argue he had an amazing season. I could argue he has been injury free for the most part. I could argue he is an incredible genius.but equally I can argue that that last season can't be reproduced, his body will only begin to break down from here on in, and he is arguably the flip side of genius.so if someone comes in with an astronomical figure, you really can't argue with a sale? Lallana, Can, Lambert and hopefully more show the club is truly committed to moving forward. Sanchez and Markovic (yes, let's be greedy) would be an fearsome lineup for the new season.

I am so disappointed in Suarez. I gave him the benefit of the doubt on several occasions but. he is still a genius.

Despite very average opposition, I thought the team played really well. Lucas was huge in the anchor role allowing Allen to push further forward to great effect. Lucas seems to be playing his way back to his pre-first major injury form. Toure and Agger have clicked. any update on Agger's knee? Sterling is back to his early season form and Aspas seems like a really good addition. My only thought on all the BR additions is that they are in exactly the same mold. slight, fast, great touch. Nothing wrong with any of that but would love to see a McMahon/Souness type of player added, particularly when playing some of the more physical dogged type of teams.

Costa could easily have been issued 3 straight red cards in that game (Can, Skrtel, Gerrard incidents) but I'm sure most Pool fans were disappointed when he didn't choose to play for us. He will always skirt controversy much like Suarez but his raw aggression and positioning sense makes him a great striker. something we completely lack. We also lack bite for the most part, though the 2 Chelsea games did see a little uptick in intensity. We so need a Souness/McMahon type of player who is not afraid to dish it out occasionally!
