Had a little chuckle hearing Rodger's say that our best defensive midfielder is Lucas. He is our only DM, and he's great! Why don't you play him then?

Honestly, I don't believe Rodger's is stupid. He knows what he's doing when he didn't play Lucas against Bournemouth and Stoke. But he did play him against Arsenal where he had the fear of being dominated and he knew the importance of being defensively sound and organized and Lucas brings that. But then again, if Henderson was fit would he have played in place of Can or Lucas last night? I fear that Rodgers would have decided to play him in place of Lucas and we would've been rattled all over the pitch.

Credit where it's due, last night was an amazing performance. My man of the match was Lucas, but maybe its because we're missing a defensive midfielder so much that we rate Lucas so much. No doubt, he's an outstanding player but I believe the problem Rodger's has is not with Lucas. The problem he has is with playing a defensive midfielder. He needs to realise that playing 3 box to box midfielder or 2 box to box and an attacking one does not make sense, especially when you have your full backs bombing up the pitch to provide width. You need that extra protection that a defensive midfielder gives you.

I love how Benteke is fitting into the team and how almost everyone is playing exceptionally! As long as Rodgers gets it into his head that playing a defensive midfielder aka Lucas is necessary, we can easily make top 4!

Spot on. It's not Lucas, he just usually doesn't want to play a DM as he's reinvented the wheel supposedly. Hopefully he's learninj from SOD and Gary Mac. i'd say playing a DM is just as important at home, as the Bournemouth game showed.

Lucas did well last night but no way was he even close to man of the match! I am one of Skrtels biggest critics but he was our best player last night, but its no shock he is a very good defender for a team that defends very deep but otherwise he struggles big time. Lucas should play more but Milner was promised to play centrally, personally i would play Milner on the right side with Lucas-Hendo-Coutinho midfield.

You are far from reality. There are two reasons he don't play Lucas.

1. He doesn't believe in a true DM

2. There are no place for Luxas unless one of Hendo / Milner / Can are injured.

Gomez man of the match for me - Was absolutely solid all game and he only had coutinho for protection really who isn't defensively minded and its credit to him that arsenal wanted to attack Clyne more than him - Just shows the job he did that even Sanchez swapped sides in the game

@Cialbray, Gomez had a great game but Coutinho's work rate was far higher than Firmino's so maybe that's why they went down our right flank more.

Harry calling someone far from reality.
Lol.

Sanchez played on the left. That's why Clyne was under more pressure. But I do agree Gomez had an outstanding game. My man of the match could have been any of our back four, who really were up against it in the second half when Arsenal began to bring on fresh legs in Ox and Walcott and looked very good. So, I'll give it to Lovren, who didn't put a foot wrong that I could see and has been much more settled the first three games than all of last season. (Not perfect, but tons better)

When the Eds said that the kovacic deal is almost done, everyone on here said he isn't what we need. Now that the eds have said its looking doubtful, everyone is disappointed of losing out on a 'star'. Can you people ever be happy?

Red_Toronto

{Ed002's Note - Generally, given a few Kleenex, most Liverpool fans can be happy.}

1.) 15 Jun 2015 21:28:12
I think generally fans are consistent. There are people that wanted kovacic before it was 'nailed on' and where happy that it was going to happen. Then there where people that had no interest in another midfielder and when it became a real possibility the same ones where against wasting money on another. Now that the deal might go cold again I think the same fans will say the same things. I think the fickleness steps in when the player doesn't perform. If kovacic is bought and doesn't do well fans will start saying I told you so and some fans will say give him time to settle in he will come good. They are usually the ones from before that agreed and disagreed with the signing. So you should just look at who said what before you start saying everyone said this before and now look, when it isn't the case.

But the general consensus on this site is that if another midfielder comes in then Lucas will most likely leave even at the expense of someone as mediocre as Allen (I totally understand), and that emre can will be wasted in an unnatural position again (which I do not understand where this is come from, the lad performed well in midfield for maybe 20 mins one game and everyone thinks he's going to take gerrards position. Other times he played there he couldn't perform under pressure and does not do well in a packed midfield because he needs time on the ball. He's a utility player for Germany U21, he was a utility player for Leverkusen and will continue to be one at lfc till he really hits some form in midfield).

Kman, a bit harsh on a 20 year old boy who like Sterling is still learning the gam and you almost written him off just because he has such an appetite for the game and is able to deputies in other positions to help the team. People on here are hailing Milner for being a utility player yet it is a handicap for a player ten years younger. Makes no sense except one has no idea what they are talking about. You are gravely mistaken with Can because he is a player with great potential and with the right coaching and mentor ship, he will be a beast. When Bayern won the CL two years ago, Can was on the bench in sweats so they must have thought he was good enuff to be in the squad for the final. The boy needs to be managed better and played in midfield with a run of games to make a better judgement of his ability, not drawing conclusions of him playing everywhere else but in midfield just because The Nose has no idea where to play his players. And remember, Bayern don't put a buy back clause in his contract when he was sold to Bayern if you suck. They did the same with Alaba, Kroos, Lahm and Hummels (on loan to BVB but refused to return). Guess they suck too, right? I wasn't for Kovacic because in spite of his talent, is not what we need except if Allen is sold and if Milner wasn't bought. We have issues elsewhere and need to be addressed except of course, if Kovacic can play centre forward.

To be fair, I think we'll all be happy when we're winning convincingly again. Otherwise, we're all just miserable, sad individuals supporting a hollow cause!

:D
