Ed, that is an absolute brilliant read. I can't stop laughing. Thank you for that. This one really may be your best. I know I've said that in the past. But this is really good.

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate, there is enough Shanks' material for many more of these as well.}

Absolutely fantastic that Ed, quality read. Thank you mate. I am with stone, this one is way up there.

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate. It is always fun reading through his quotes. He was special.}

Yes it is mate, I've often found myself googling his quotes. Special is about right, he was more than a legend, what a man. Thanks again mate, going to send this to my boy.

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate really glad you enjoyed it.}

Great read ed1. If you could choose one manager never employed who would it be? I’m guessing clough or fergie or even bielsa.

{Ed001's Note - I take it you mean by Liverpool? Cruyff.}

Yes Ed1 did mean Liverpoool. Good shout re cruyff. A L would be in his heaven if he were manager now.

{Ed001's Note - I would love to know what Cruyff made of Lallana - I think he would be on his case constantly as he hated tricks for the sake of making a trick. To Cruyff everything had to have a purpose, the purpose being to create space with a view to getting the ball into the opposition net. Sometimes Lallana will have the option to move forward into space but Cruyff turns back into a crowded midfield. Cruyff would be tearing his hair out!}

That was a great read, thanks Ed. Since he was mentioned in the article, I was wondering whether Stan Matthews is on your Legends list? I can't say I've ever seen him play but to be able to continue on into his fifties, he must've been a pretty special player.

{Ed001's Note - yes mate he is and he was an obsessive physical fitness nut, which is why he played on so long.}

My boy loved this article last night Ed. He knows very little about the history of the club but I made sure he knew about Shankly and luckily he's interested in anything a Liverpool related lol past or present!

I'm quite proud of that to be honest because so many youngsters aren't interested in anything apart from what's going on here and now but he's interested in the lot. Thankfully!

{Ed001's Note - I think kids just don't get given the chance to appreciate history to be honest. The way it is taught in school is not conducive to them enjoying it. It should be a story, a tale, like a novel but real, that is told to them and entertains them, to get them wanting to learn more about it on their own. We call it his-story for a reason, it is all a big story, so why not teach it that way?

I am really glad he enjoyed it, I will have to revisit Shanks and present another few of these of his anecdotes as I have a lot more in hand ready. The guy is one of the most entertaining men ever to have lived.}

I couldn't agree more Ed mate. I do have an issue with PE in schools, all they do is, they get the kids kitted up and send them out to do whatever sport but they never have them in a class actually learning about any of the sports, it winds me up in a way but this is nothing new as you well know. To me they should have the kids learning about the sport before physically doing it, maybe it's just me? I don't know but personally I think the youngsters need to know more about what they're doing before actually doing it. If you're a PE teacher imo you should know your sh*t but it seems they don't which is why they don't educate the youngsters.

Take you for an example, I only know you from on here but if you were a PE teacher I have no doubt you'd be educating the kids with the knowledge you possess, making them believe in themselves, making them realise what they can be! Not just saying 'OK get changed now bugger off and play the game'.

My boy, he loves his football but learns nothing about it at school. I think if they talked more about the legends and the history it'd be a different story, I think they'd be much more passionate about it but they aren't given that chance. It's something I'll never understand mate.

I really look forward to anything you write but especially when it is about Shankly.

Thanks again mate.

{Ed001's Note - I don't think PE teachers have the time with the kids to do any more than just get them out there running around.}

Yeah you aren't wrong mate I suppose it's easy to forget about the limited time they have during the week with the kids.

{Ed001's Note - PE is almost completely sidelined these days, it is not good for kids to do so little exercise.}

Great read cheers ed.

When you watch the old footage of shanks speaking he's just a joy to listen to. Any player would run through a brick wall for a manager like that.

Never tire of coming across stories about shanks.

{Ed001's Note - cheers mate and you are right, he was incredibly charismatic. A born leader.}

Ed01, a wonderful piece, thank you. I was a kid when I first starting going the match in the mid 1960s and Shanks was in his prime. I used to walk home from the match with my brothers and some mates, 8 of us all together, and our route took us through West Derby where Shanks lived. In 1971 Liverpool played Arsenal in the FA Cup Final and after the final match of the season at Anfield we walked home as usual. We split into 2 groups and I was in the group lagging behind. As we got near to where Shanks lived, the 4 lads in front came rushing back to us practically peeing themselves with excitement. It transpired that Shanks had spotted their Liverpool scarves and stopped his car to talk to them. He asked if they were going to Wembley and when they replied that they didn’t have tickets, he took 4 Cup Final tickets out of his pocket and gave them to the lads. I was pig sick to miss out of course but what a great manager, what a great guy.

thanks ed, really enjoyed that. i've stayed in the Shankly hotel in Liverpool and in each room as a different story or anecdote on the ceiling about shanks. i think they have hundreds of rooms, so shows you how many lives he touched!

i seen a scouting book whilst i was there, just notes written in a pad, crazy how far things have come! but it said of Ron Yeats "Big, Strong, could be a player" stuck with me that one.

{Ed001's Note - Shanks loved Yeats.}
