Based on the reaction on the BBC, you'd think Gerrard has just had the best match by any player in the last decade!
Am I the only one who thinks that apart from his goals he was pretty poor? Some of his passing was woeful.

Not trying to play down the fact he bailed us out, just trying to preach sense amidst the media's fawning over him.

They were a tiny bit over zealous but you're being a tad harsh. The fact is that without his two goals we'd have been out. In all honesty, my greater concern is our defense. at times it's non-existent.

He wasn't great, but who was? Playing on those sort of pitches against physical opposition is difficult. Gerrard got the goals to send us through and in my opinion the only 2 players who were better overall than Gerrard were Coutinho and Sakho.

The problem was the lack of pace and movement up front. Coutinho always drops deep for the ball and Gerrard and Lambert are too slow to play together in the front 3; similarly to how Gerrard and Lucas don't do well together in midfield. You need mobility and we lacked that up front. The difference was, Gerrard still posed a threat unlike Lambert who was really poor tonight.

I only caught the last 30 and I thought he looked good. That may have been coloured by the amount of space AFC Wimbledon afforded us on the counter towards the end of the game. Better finishing from other players and he'd have had a couple of assists to go with his goals.

Whatever his overall performance though, I don't think it should really surprise anyone that he plays better as an attacking midfielder than a defensive one. We've only been suggesting as much all season, after all.

My biggest concern is Mignolet.

I really dislike the early rounds of cups that are played against "poorer" opposition. Always poor quality, rough, lump it forward sky high type of games. that's why better teams struggle cause they are brought down to there level.

The lack of pace in the front line meant Wimbledon built unchallenged at the back, knocking up balls to their monster CF with ease.

Gerrard's genius produced 2 goals against a L2 team. But the inability of anyone at the front to defend would have us in hot water with any PL team.

What do you want them to do aussieMARK? Attempt to play Barcelona-style football (and suffer the inevitable defeat that would bring)? The onus isn't on the "little" clubs to play with quality or set-up how big teams want them to, the onus is on the big team to use all of there supposed quality to find a way to win under those different circumstances - surely this is why the FA Cup is held in high regard and also what makes it so entertaining? Ourselves playing badly (again) does not reflect poorly on Wimbledon, it reflects poorly on us (and our players, manager, etc).
