Ed001 with you saying raphina turned down the call up rather than the club stopping him, do you imagine that all players will be implored to turn down the call ups for the next round of fixtures?
I know it could potentially effect their international future but if enough in the circumstance do it then you can't just leave them all out in the future?
Whole situation not of a farce really.

{Ed001's Note - that has been something that has happened in the past anyway, but players don't normally consider rejecting a call.}

Unless your retired from international duty you must ans the call up. Joel matip missed a game 2 seasons ago when Cameroon invoked the same rule and Liverpool we unable to play him until the matter got cleared up.

Technically 'retiring' from international football doesn't actually exist, there is no mechanism for it. Its just a convention that everyone generally agrees to follow if someone wants to rule themselves out permanently.

I think players can make it public that they ‘no longer wished to be considered for selection’ or sme such wording which is generally taken in good faith by the relevant country’s ruling FA, but like you say, technically there is no such thing as international retirement.

Learn something new everyday cheers gents. So in theory Shearer could have been called up to 2002 World Cup or 2004 Euros and he would have had to go?

The issue becomes more complicated, or farcical, when players "retire" and then "un-retire", just as quickly.
