Ed 001 to cover both full back postions would do you think about djibril Sidibe?

{Ed001's Note - I have never seen him play on the left, but on the right I would.}

for me this signing makes sense as trent is not a defender maybe he could really be moved forward with full back being a option if we are short then leaving sidibe to play right wing back as he attacks very well and gets up and down then right wing.

Am I the only one who is non-plussed with the idea Alexander-Arnold moving to midfield? He'd have less space and time on the ball, and wouldn't be on the right flank to whip in dangerous crosses nearly as much. I doubt he'll get 15 assists in a season from midfield.

We have a guy who can power up and down the right touchline for 90 minutes, has a good passing range, uses the ball intelligently and is deadly with his deliveries. If it was up to me, I wouldn't be inclined to take him out of there. Sure, he's not the best in the world defensively, but I think anyone we would get who's a worthwhile improvement defensively, will be noticeably weaker going forward. I don't think that's a trade off we need to make. Plus Alexander-Arnold is only 20, he'll get better defensively.

20 years ago, he would have probably been a right side midfielder in a 442 whipping in crosses into the box in the mould of Beckham, but we don't play a system like that. Very few top teams do anymore. And I don't see him as a flying winger able to take on players on either his right or left side like Mane.

I'd leave him where he is aswell. Why mess with something that's already brilliant?

Fully agree with something red taa needs game time still and realistically who would you drop out of the three mids to give trent a starting place.

I’d say his passion range is hindered at full back and he’s also too good a player to be a fb. I’d much rather him pinging them balls from the middle myself he’d open teams up left and right. I also think he’s poor defensively especially positioning.

Its allright saying he's too good for fullback and he'd be better in midfield but he wouldn't get half the space or time in the middle of the park. i watched Trent for the u18s and 23's for a few years while he was coming through and if im honest i never thought he was near good enough to play for our 1st team in midfield. I love the kid and would love a lot more of the academy players to break through but he's found a position, he's excelling in that position and could be something really special there, let's leave him there and see how good he can become.

Good shout there, OP re: Sidibe. Sidibe is very good on the ball, has a good cross and end product on him even tho his defensive nous needs a bit of work. Also as a plus, he was supposed to be the starter for France at the last WC but could not shake off a knee prob so Pavard (supposed to be his deputy) got the nod and well, the rest is history. I would take him in a heartbeat.

100% agree with you Something Red.

I agree. Trent has real quality going forward and lacks the defensive consistency but with defenders learning to defend it takes experience and game time. It's very rare 20 year olds are defensively reliable consistently. Give him time and his weaknesses will only strengthen. I'd like him to remain fullback long term.

His defensive weaknesses would show even more in midfield. Prefer to let him grow into the RB role until he makes it his own, and then look into moving him further up. We still need a backup for him, though. Not a good idea to keep switching Gomez back and forth. Not every player can do a James Milner and slot in, without much difficulty, into most positions on the right and left.
