Just wanted to ask for fun. What is everyone's favourite World Cup? I've not enjoyed it for a good few tournaments now, but I one I think was the best ever was 86. Brilliant tournament and great football.

What is everyone else's favourite?

{Ed025's Note - 1970 with that great Brazil team..

1970 was before my time but from what I've seen of that brazil team they've joy to watch. the goal carlos Alberto (i think it him) got against Italy is about as close to perfection as your ever going to get. 1990 for me,1st time rep of ireland quaified and they done brilliant, only beat 1-0 by host nation Italy. the country went bananas! I only a child at time but remember it v v well.

86 and 90. Loved that game between Germany and the Netherlands. Proper old fashioned aggro. After that they were all fairly mediocre.

I must admit I enjoyed USA 94. Not having England to follow meant I could just enjoy the football. The games were on in the evening UK time so I got to watch them all as well.

Bebeto and Romario for Brazil 1994 World Cup, on some Greek Island in a wee beach bar called Chaplins. That's all I can remember ?‍♂️.

Great times, before I caught captured by the misses ?.

The one that Liverpool won the other year.

For me it was Italia 90, purely cos I was 8/ 9 years old and the first 1 I remember and being obsessed. Cameroon chopping down Argentina. Being mesmerised by Baggio, platts goal against Belgium. Just a shame the final was so awful!

Three Everton players in that England team Ed, great side that too.
My favourites have been the 74 Cruyff team and 82, another fabulous Brazil side.
Won’t be watching this edition though.

{Ed025's Note - i just cant get excited about it yet juicer, but i am a football nut so i cant rule out watching it mate..

70, 74 and 78 before my time. 82 I only remember vaguely, but 86 with Laudrup (Michael, who I wished we bought back in the day) and Maradonna playing at his peak was mesmerising. 90 was good but felt Argentinas tactics marred it a bit. I thin I stopped being interested in them 2014 onwards.

2010 for me, 1998 was the first I really remember with Owens wondergoal. But 2010, for me, had everything.

USA 94 for me, Romario, Stoichkov, Baggio, Maradona, Romania, Nigeria, Diana Ross missing a penalty, it had everything.

Ed025 got it right - 1970 was the one. The Brazilian side was the best national team I’ve seen by a good margin and some of the matches were just incredible - the Italy v West Germany semi was brilliant (Der Kaiser playing on with his arm in a sling - reminds me of young Gordon at Everton in terms of character and attitude) . And Brazil’s performance in the final when they completely took a very, very good Italian team apart was awesome.

It also had Pele, one of the very best footballers ever to play the game, at the peak of his career. The whole thing was brilliant.

It had everything including good old fashioned off field shenanigans, like England’s captain being arrested in Colombia in the build up to the competition for alleged jewellery robbery in the hotel the squad were staying in and then accusations of food poisoning during the tournament. It was just brilliant.

2014 is underrated though. Brazil shouldve lost to both Colombia and Chile so when they finallt got anhilated it was really enjoyable. I seem to remember USA played a close match with Germany, and then Tottenham spaffed good money on DeAndre Yedlin. Certainly a few of you experts wanted us to sign him at that time. All the south american teams played some entertaining games really, and If i remember Greece nearly beat someone they normally “shouldnt” too still fielding 1 player from 2004 aswell.

2006 for me. I came late to football as I am from a country that doesn't play a lot of football. In 2006 I was working in Italy when Italy won, so I got to experience all the emotion and celebration. I actually saw the rolling stones in concert a few months after the world cup in Milan, and they showed the penalty shootout then sang you can't always get what you want. great time! But that penalty against us in the round of 16 was never a penalty!

Spain 82. When I really fell in love with football. Purely because of that Brazil team. Zico, Socrates, Eder, Falcao, Junior. Wow. As a 10 year old I almost cried when Italy beat them.

2002 is the one I remember most.
That Brazil team with Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho was insane.
Absolute joy watching Ronaldo (original and best ronaldo) coming back from injury hell to rip it up on the highest stage, his ridiculous hair cut.
Plus the emergence of Ronaldinho who scored that “did he mean it” goal.

It’s such a shame that there is such a dark cloud hanging over this World Cup. The World Cup should be the worlds greatest sporting event but the corruption, human rights abuses kind of take the sheen off. Let’s hope the football is at least good.

1994 for me. The first WC my home country played in and completely killed it. They have played in 5 of them since then.
