A rather convuleted question for Ed2 if he'd consider it. The last couple of years has seen Liverpool's transfer strategy change, we've gone from paying middling money for potentially good players to overpaying for established top tier players.

Do you think the overpaying is a deliberate strategy so that we can force our way onto the top table with the Citys, Utds and Chelseas of the world or is that clubs know we have a tendency to overpay and are taking advantage of us?

{Ed002's Note - No, overpaying is absolute stupidity but the owners continue to throw money at another deparate attempt to win the Premier League. The club had to overpay, and in cash, for van Dyke because of the tapping up and the player going on strike. Roma set a price for Alisson that no one else was interested in, given he only has that one year of experience, yet Liverpool paid it.}

It could end well ala Firmino or end poorly ala Markovic. I prefer our current strategy of buying proven quality as opposed to the Benitez era when we would spend a lot but spread it over a lot of players who where not seen as top players and many would move on in no time for a fraction of the cost.

ED002 I will counter that and say Chelsea last season bought Danny Drinkwater Ross Barkley and Davide Zappacosta for a combined figure of 78m (not included all the agents fees and hidden bonuses) .
And did not win the title and how much of that money will they get back when selling those players who have not done well and hardly play?
IM quiet happy with the players we have bought in recently and will leave it to FSG to worry about finances
I care about titles and trophies and will leave the finances to the business men to worry about.

{Ed002's Note - What are you talking about - it has nothing to do with Chelsea? Who have won the league and the FA Cup in the past two years. Try not to make these embarrassing posts.}

80 million pogba. 90 mil lukaku. 60 mil morata. 50 mil sterling. 50 mil stones. 50 mil walker. 50 mil Mendy. 57 mil jorginho. 50 mil fred

There also spending to stay in the game ed my friend.

{Ed002's Note - It always has to be made about someone else - desperately embarrassing. You are aware that these clubs are much better placed than Liverpool financially?}

Thanks for the response Ed, I assume this will end being a hindsight thing. If it all comes together and we win trophies it will have been worth it, if not questions will be asked.

Thank you for your response Ed002 im not embarrassed at all
my point is every club does it, even chelsea and im not sure any club in the world would take paying close to 100m for the players i mentioned or Alisson for 67m
Im happy with the buy as is every other poster on this forum and as a fan is that not really counts?
It is not our money and we have no say how it is spent so be happy when liverpool buy a truly world class player who is number one for his country in front of the leagues champions keeper Ederson.

{Ed002's Note - As an example, Southampton were offering van Dyke to there clubs for £15M less than Liverpool and others would not have been cornered over the vast agent fees paid - all because of the illegal activity of Klopp. Neither other side approached by Roma yesterday were interested in paying that amount. The others also have the money and Liverpool don’t. You are simply looking to deflect away from Liverpool again.}

Liverpool don't have the money but have agreed a deal lol
I trust FSG who have been running the Red Sox for years not to bankrupt us or do anything silly to remotely put us in danger
No deflection here just very happy we have finally bought a world class keeper
here here fsg and klopp.

{Ed002's Note - Liverpool don’t have the money - you realise they have been paying £79M a year for players purchased years ago? Debt is rising - they are spending against loans and future income.}

Common sense really, when you have the best manager in the league you back him. Under Klopp we've gone from midtable finishes to two European finalists in three years and cemented a top four place. Klopps keeping his end of the bargain and the owners are keeping theirs. What a time to be an LFC supporter.

I prefer your normal response Ed. What happened to not discussing money?
Football clubs and the finances are of no interest to me. I'm supporting my team not playing Championship manager.
All I see is Liverpool signing big players and the club extending the stadium.
THE owners are aware of Ffp so let them worry about how they balance the books.

These prices that we are paying are outrageous. It's not my money, but still. Yesterday, I mentioned that the price for Alisson is beyond crazy but I'd people arguing with me. For years, I haven't agreed with Ed02 saying we want to buy the league, but it looks like that's what we want to do now.
I think the club is lucky with the stature that it has. We can easily do a Rangers (I assume illiquidity is a reason for their relegation, but I may be wrong) .

Klopp identified Alisson as the keeper he wanted. Roma set the fee that they would be willing to let him leave for, and we agreed to pay it. Simple. It is a massive sum of money, especially for a Goalkeeper. But something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Above, other posters have been bringing up over inflated transfer fees that other clubs have spent on players, and Ed002 has rightly stated that this is the Liverpool page so other teams are irrelevant. But, Ed002 also states in one of his replies that other teams weren't interested at the price required to buy Alisson, but as this is the Liverpool page it is irrelevant what other teams were and weren't willing to pay.

In one sense I understand the whole “it’s not my money thing” except it many ways it is. Tv subscription, ticket prices, replica kits etc etc. We all complain when prices go up yet people keep saying I don’t care how much we pay, it’s not coming out of my pocket. Somewhere down the line it must be coming out of our pockets, no?
